has an amazing brand called retail MBA
and she helps entrepreneurs get their
products into retail stores yes just
real quick you know you've worked with
so many different entrepreneurs so many
some of the retail stores that you've
been able to get people selling in I
have clients who had zero sales
experience zero by our relationships
nothing to do with retail just inventors
with cool product ideas who just really
wanted to get their products and retail
shelves and they've gotten their
products into Walmart they've gotten
their blogs at Kroger
Bed Bath & Beyond yeah all Best Buy all
these different retailers so it's not
hard to do it's just you need to
understand what's available to you and
actually do it how to approach these
guys but yeah that's awesome so you know
someone that's watching this right now
that might have a product you know a
great product that they want to you know
sell and retail what what advice would
you have or what tips would you have for
them to get their products just to
approach I guess some of the buyers and
these stores well the biggest thing I'll
say to you is if you have a product and
you're you're a product idea and you've
been kind of dreaming about it you go to
stores and you're like god I totally
could have this product idea on the
store shelves I just wish I knew about
that what I would say to you is that
today more than ever is the best time
ever to get your products in the stores
Meijer at chain stores are so hungry for
new products they are the insatiable
need for that next week product and the
reason for that is because their
customers today want the next new
product constantly and so if you think
you need to be a big established company
to get your products in the stores it's
not true anymore because these buyers
know that they're looking for that you
know they know that the small companies
the little guy has that interesting
innovation that interesting product so
please number one more than anything and
just imagine the possibility because it
is possible for you and it is absolutely
you know my clients are doing it and
they have no sales experience by our
relationships and they're getting
the stores so what I would say about you
know some tips and strategies is is that
the biggest mistake I see people make
when they go after stores is that they
have this great product and then they
reach out to the retailer they call the
front desk of the retailer and they say
hey retailer I have this great product
will you tell me how to get your product
in the stores and that's where everybody
does they assume that they're just gonna
go follow protocol and go after stores
and that's get bombarded with that -
you're right people all day long are
calling the front desk of the retailer
saying how do I do this what do I do and
so guess what the retailer is done they
have set up a vendor department a place
where people can eat send and you know
either like there's a phone number or
there's a website that a person has to
go to and what they're telling everybody
is to go to that website and fill out a
form and submit the product online and
so it's gonna ask you about your
financials your uploaded pictures blah
blah blah and then you submit the
product you send it to the cloud and
then you wait and hope that the buyer
will actually approach you and are
interested in your product now the issue
with that though is that you never know
who's gonna get that right that email
you don't know if that particular person
is reviewing a product actually even
looked at your product you don't know if
the appropriate buyer actually paid
attention to it and so at the end of the
day you get kind of you're just waiting
and you're nervous and a lot of my
customers who come to me have been
waiting for so long to get answers that
they're like you know what am I supposed
to do so what I teach and the stuff that
I think is important is to figure out
who the buyer is and approach them in a
very specific way and get your answers
quick and then fill out the forms and so
forth they're interested in the product
I want to go straight to the source
tell me if you like the product tell me
if you don't like the product what the
issue is and then you know I'll do
anything you want in terms of paperwork
and all that other stuff so that's all
the manufacturers reps the sales reps
who sell to retailers that's what they
all do they don't follow protocol and
submit the product that's awesome I love
that so how would someone find the
buyers like how would they you know find
their information or there's so many
ways to find buyers contact information
and by the way I will say that if it was
easy right everybody would find the
buyers contact information and
would go right and do that and the
buyers kind of keep it in a little
hush-hush sneaky and so it's a it's kind
of not and by the way buyers changed
jobs chain stores all the time right so
it's not unlikely that every six months
or a year you know a buyer goes and is a
buyer for say consumer electronics and
then you call them one day and they're
not there anymore so it's very common
that they are constantly rotating these
buyers and so it's even harder to find
buyers contact information although it's
not impossible so if you're willing to
do the extra work than it is possibly be
resourceful you got to be resourceful
and there's you know I spend a whole
hour explaining it's all in different
ways to find buyers contact information
one one thing you know we're at the
amazing summit you did an amazing job
speaking the other day you know you work
with people from Shark Tank all that
sort of stuff
yeah one thing you said I loved which
was the packaging the packaging is super
important for any product that's what
they're looking for as well and one
thing you said which is look at your
competitors on what they're selling and
just kind of tweaking or modeling their
packaging you want to talk about that
real quick so for those of you who are
struggling with packaging I'm going to
give you the simplest impossible and
this will alleviate alleviate a lot of
that stress that you're having about
packaging because that is like the most
common question I have the most stressed
people have and it's the simplest thing
to fix yeah so here's what you do you've
got a great product you want to sell in
two stores you need great packaging
right packaging can make or break the
buyers decision about whether or not
they buy your product from you and the
reason that is is because when a person
walks into a store and they go and buy
your product they're looking at your
packaging not the product itself that's
why the worst products in the world sell
yeah and the best products don't sell
and is because of packaging you find
that more important it's more important
the product itself I'm telling you
because you know that there's product
yesterday to them you know only crappy
product it says all the right things to
you and then you buy the thing and
that's because you're not looking at the
product of breath right that's why so
how do you figure out packaging here's
the simplest thing you have a consumer
electronics product go to the stores you
want to sell to so if you want to sell
the Best Buy or you know Walmart
whatever it is for you go to those
stores take a look around then go to the
section of the store that sells consumer
electronics products so you want to go
to the section of the store where your
product would fit
go look for your top three competitors
okay you're looking for the top three
competitors who are closest to you now
some people say I don't have any
competitors I have this great new
innovative product you always have some
sort of product that's somewhat relevant
to your product to find the closest
thing to it what are you gonna do is
you're gonna buy those three products
you're gonna take those products home
you're gonna go and you're gonna give it
to your packaging person you're gonna
tell them to knock it off so if it's a
box then you're gonna go have that
packaging person create the box exactly
the same size and shape and everything
that your competitors are doing if it's
a hanging card you go make it hanging
card if it's a whatever it is you just
copy it exactly and then what you do is
make the design prettier cooler more
interesting why because the buyer said
yes to that product the buyer said I
liked your packaging I like the size I
like the shape I like everything that
you did and so you're gonna be on my
store shelves so why reinvent the wheel
if you can just simply go and create the
packaging exactly the way the buyer
likes it the buyer is telling you
everything that's right there it's right
there and then all you have to do is
make the design pop make it prettier
cooler more interesting and so forth so
that's the easiest solution and that's
the thing that will help you and it's
really not brain surgery none of this
stuff is it's just that nobody ever
explains how to get your products in
stores and what the buyers care about
and that's the thing that used to
torture me when I was first starting I
really just wanted someone to give me
these answers tell me how to make money
with this product with this widget and
then I'll go do the work but nobody
would tell me that stuff so that's just
some simple things missing preparing
