Scamadviser is an automated algorithm to check if a website is legit and safe (or not). The review of newscientist.com has been based on an analysis of 40 facts found online in public sources. Sources we use are if the website is listed on phishing and spam sites, if it serves malware, the country the company is based, the reviews found on other sites, and many other facts.

The website looks safe to use. However as the analysis of the website is done automatically, we always recommend you do your own checking as well to make sure the website is safe to use.

Webshop Review

It is quite common that websites share their internet infrastructure (server CPU power, disc space and Internet access) with other websites. This is what newscientist.com is doing as well. For smaller websites this is very logical as they do not need all the infrastructure all the time. From a larger brand or high traffic website it is expected that they have their own infrastructure.

We upped our review of the website as it has been given a high ranking by Alexa. Alexa ranks websites based on popularity (how many people are visiting the website every month) and listings (how many other websites link to the site because they consider it valuable).

A significant number of positive reviews for newscientist.com were found on other consumer feedback websites like Resellerrating, Trustpilot and Sitejabber. The website seems to be performing well. We therefor increased our rating of this website.

Technical Review

We identified an SSL certificate meaning that the data shared between your browser and the website is encrypted and cannot be read by others. SSL certificates are always used by legit and safe websites. Unfortunately scammers increasingly also use SSL certificates so it is no guarantee that you are visiting a reliable website.

1 years direct debit taken - after cancelling subscription techni fault

I have been a New Scientist fan for years. With the arrival of the Internet, I understand that quality journalism and research is massively under threat. Therefore, I have started to subscribe to various publications. I cancelled New Scientist, because I kept being logged out of my phone. This made my subscription useless. Even worse, I contacted support via email to make the cancellation. I was told that it had been done. A year later, I find out that they have been continually taking my money. Guess what? They have no records of the email exchange - so no refund. Disgusting.

Hi Praminder,

I would really like to get to the bottom of this issue with you and find a solution so that we can restore some of your faith in us.

Please can you send me an email to [email protected] so that we can look into this further? It would also massively help if you could dig out the email you sent to cancel your subscription that you mentioned.

I have been reading the magazine for years, throughout college and beyond. I bought an annual online subscription in March. With the subscription came the book "The Brain - a users guide". The subscription was OK, the book did not arrive. I have phoned several times, usually speaking to the same person in India. "Very sorry, .. have checked.. should arrive in 2 weeks.. spoken to supervisor ... will definitely arrive by end of month..." I suggested "If you don't want to send me the book, just tell me" It is a pity that an excellent journal is being let down by sloppy, unprofessional administration. The very fact that you offshore all customer contact indicates how you really value your subscribers.

The book arrived this morning - within 24 hours of this review. An impressive response.

Thank you

A Disappointing Makeover

I have subscribed since 1960. I am disappointed by the latest version. I have always relied on New Scientist for an overview of developments in all fields of science and technology. While New Scientist still serves this function, coverage can be superficial and often too brief, except for feature articles.

I've been reading New Scientist for a few years now, and I've always been impressed with how they tackle highly complex subjects in an accessible way (and without resorting to clickbait as many publishers seem to these days).
Highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to keep up to date with science developments and gain a new perspective on the world.

The renewal process could be quite a bit slicker. I also received multiple emails months in advance of my renewal and when I did renew it started the day I completed the purchase not at then end of my current subscription date.

Good overall but can be sensational and…

Good overall but can be sensational and biased

New Scientist does some things really well - for example when they cover a topic in-depth. They have a good range of interesting articles, written in an accessible way for non-experts.
However it often lacks balance, and can tend to write as if one perspective covers the whole topic. In the area in which I have some expertise, I have noticed a bias in their reporting towards more sensational topics and ways of viewing an issue. Not providing an overall background or even another perspective could lead people to inaccurate conclusions. I find this frustrating and it leads me to question and distrust their conclusions in other articles too.

For example, recently they ran an interview featuring a geneticist and his opinions about how people should parent. This completely ignored the impact of poverty, attachment styles etc. on the child's ability to develop. In fact, the interview quoted him as saying "People in the field have tried very hard to find systematic sources of environmental influences, but we haven’t been successful". This is simply untrue. It would have been great if they could have countered this with an interview with a psychologist about the impacts of attachment, or someone from Psychologists for Social Change.

We scientists are quite aware that there is no definitive truth, or at least that the truth is a lot more complicated than you initially think. I would have hoped that New Scientist would reflect this.

Reply from New Scientist
Dear Jenny,

Thank you for your feedback. We would first like to thank you for taking the time to write this review. We value all feedback here at New Scientist.

We understand that if you have specialist knowledge and expertise on the subject of an article you might find that it doesn’t plumb the depths of your knowledge. We try our best to cater to all of our readers - for those who are well-each area and those who are just learning about it.

We like to believe that our readers are, just like us, hungry for knowledge and answers and so we trust that if a subject intrigues them they will continue to read up on it.

The article that you review was an interview with one researcher about their work and the conclusions they have drawn. We did pose the question to the interviewee about the environmental factors you mention, such as childhood neglect. However, we realise this topic is huge and we will of course continue to cover the work of other researchers who draw other conclusions.

Once again, thank you for writing to us.

Best,
Libby - Customer Care
