imagine my surprise when I found out that you can only order a cappuccino there
in the morning, before noon! It’s not illegal or anything, you’ll just get some
disapproving looks from the locals.
- The French
actually love sipping their coffee for an hour or even more while sitting at a
café and reading a book, for example. They prefer espresso, though, but they
totally don’t mind other choices as long as you savor your cup.
- If you like to
salt your food, be warned that you shouldn’t do it when dining in Portugal.
It’s not just weird, it’s downright offensive for the chef! I’ll definitely
keep that in mind.
- In Romania, at
some point during the ceremony, the bride gets kidnapped! Some guests, usually
men, kidnap the bride and demand a ransom from the groom over the phone.
- In Turkey, when a
local says “I’m on my way,” it can mean anything from “I’m getting into my car”
to “I just got out of bed.”
- Uzbeks never use
their left hand to eat, greet people, or pass something to someone, only the
right one. It’s because the left hand is considered dirty given that its sole
purpose is to, uh, clean yourself up after going to the bathroom.
- In China, you
absolutely cannot write other people’s names in red ink, period. This taboo
goes back to ancient times when chicken blood was used to write decrees for
those who got the death penalty.
- A lot of Japanese
people wear masks out in public if they catch a cold so that they don’t pass it
on to others. Actually, this practice is considered a norm and even common
decency.
- In Australia,
people get fined for not voting. I guess 6,000 people didn’t show up for an
election in Tasmania in 2010, and each of them had to shovel over $26.
- People in Bolivia
consider it inappropriate to talk about work while they eat. They even avoid
the topic when having lunch with their co-workers.
- Mexicans would
rather die than say ‘no’ to a traveler in need of directions. So if you’re ever
lost in Mexico, make sure you ask two or three people before making a final
decision.

to plan my trip and
do my research what

an idiot of myself
with some embarrassing
cultural faux pas
right and I figured

the shocking stuff I
learned about
different countries
traditions and
customs
I hope these help
you out on your next
trip abroad okay so
I wanted to start
from Europe and the
first country on my
list was Germany my
mom's side came from
there way back when
so I thought maybe I
should get to know
my roots anyway all I
really knew about
Germany is that they
make awesome cars
and drive them really
fast on the Autobahn
what I didn't know
was that they have
this a really funny
wedding tradition on
the night before
the wedding day the

it's common for them
to throw napkins on
the floor at a cafe
or restaurant yeah
that's right they wad
up and throw their
trash right on the
floor my first
reaction was wow how rude
but it actually
makes perfect sense you
see since the staff
normally consists of
just a few waiters
they need to be quick
about serving
everyone so when they have
to clear the tables
of empty dishes they
can just take them
away and carry them
to the kitchen
without worrying about
picking up and
throwing away napkins as
for the mess on the
floor
it just gets swept
away when the inflow
of customers dies
down a little Portugal
is last on my list
of Western European
countries and I
found another
food-related custom
that's way different
from how we do
things in the US if you
like to salt your
food be warned that
you shouldn't do it
when dining in
Portugal it's not
just weird
it's downright

in Eastern Europe
one of the first
countries on my
itinerary was Romania
remember when I told
you that Germany's
dish smashing
wedding custom was weird
forget that in
Romania at some point
during the ceremony

that when a local
says I'm on my way it

out of bed so I'm
gonna see for myself
and pop into Turkey
on my way to
Uzbekistan I actually
learned a lot about

go there of course
I probably wouldn't
be so pumped if I
were left-handed as
a predominantly
Muslim population

my way to China
I knew this country
of ancient customs
wouldn't disappoint
did you ever get in
trouble for using
red ink in school I
remember my teachers
telling us not to
because they use the
red pen to grade
papers well in China
it goes way beyond
that there you
absolutely cannot write
other people's names
in red ink period
this taboo goes back
to ancient times

funny thing I
learned was that locals
would rather die
than say no to a
traveler in need of
directions so if
you're ever lost in
Mexico make sure you
ask two or three
people before making a
final decision I'm
really glad I learned
that before going
there I was planning
for Canada to be my
last stop before
heading back home
apart from all the
memes about
Canadians always being sorry
I did find out that
they sell milk in
stick bags I can't
imagine what purpose
this serves so if
there are any
Canadians watching
that could explain
this to me that'd be
awesome also how do
you open and close
the bats I'm so
confused
of course it
wouldn't be fair if I
didn't say something
about my own
country I've been
told that the way
Americans greet each
other is so weird
for people from
other countries like
when we say hey how
are you or how you
doing if we just
want to greet someone
and not necessarily
hear about how
they're actually
doing yeah I guess my
people are just as
confusing - what
about you what

have that might seem
strange to the rest
of the world share
