what's up YouTube this is Ryan Hildreth
and today we're going to talk about the
market and what that means when you're
watching CNBC or market watch and you
that refers to is that they either the
Dow 30 or the S&P 500 which are two
indexes that track the overall market so
the Dow 30 tracks the top 30 companies
based on price and the S&P 500 tracks
the top 500 companies the largest 500
companies based on market capitalization
which is shares outstanding times price
so I use the S&P 500 to track the market
and the overall performance of the
market because it gives you a broader
base because there's 500 companies
within the S&P 500 you can look it up
those companies you know our Exxon Mobil
Chevron Apple Amazon Google the largest
come 500 companies are in the S&P 500
and in order to look that up you can go
onto your stock app and should be the
first the first or second row should say
S&P 500 if not there are certain index
funds meaning you can purchase these
funds that track the S&P 500 or the Dow
31 fund that tracks the S&P 500 is spy
spwhy that's the ticker symbol also SPX
so when you're looking at the Dow and
S&P you're looking at the overall market
performance the overall market indices I
like to look at the S&P 500 when I'm
choosing stocks because I choose stocks
based on how well they track with
market which I'll go over in the next
video talking about market correlation
know that there is different sectors
within the market you have you know your
utility companies you have your and
infrastructure industrial companies you
have your technology you have bio pharma
you have different sectors within the
S&P 500
okay different types of companies and to
track those companies there's also index
funds tracking those companies like if
you want to track utilities you could
type in the ticker symbol Excel you if
you want to track
industrials you could type in Excel I if
you want to track financials XLF bio I
BB I like to use Nasdaq the QQQ to track
tech companies but when they refer to
the market again they're referring to
either the Dow or the S&P 500 because
this isn't an index that tracks the
overall market with public companies
trading so if you have any questions
make sure to contact me at Ryan Hildreth
rh at gmail.com i'll get back to you if
any questions look forward to the next
video where we're going to be talking
about market correlation and comparing
your stock to the sp500 and how that
works how to purchase stocks at optimal
times with the market thank you
