YouTube Burnout - Is Casey Neistat Wrong?

the constant pressure for making more
YouTube videos is real Casey Neistat
just posted a video recently about this
and everything he said in that video is
spot on
spot-on I could just totally resonate
with everything he was talking about
PewDiePie and some other popular
youtubers how they reach a plateau with
their YouTube career or whatever you
want to call it and because you've built
the your foundation is built on posting
consistent content right whether you're
posting content every single day a
couple times a day or you have you know
a few videos that you put out per week
your audience is expecting that and so
you kind of have to you know give them
what they want and you don't want to be
a disservice to them and you feel like
there's a lot of pressure there to do
that and there's been many times when
I've woken up and you know I've been
spending time with my family and
it was difficult to relax it was
difficult to enjoy my time with my
family without having that pressure of
okay what am I going to make a video
about today and so now it takes a while
for this to happen you know at first
it's all gung-ho right you know you get
up there's lots of stuff to talk about
because you haven't made very many
videos yet and you know till you make
like over 300 videos in less than a year
it starts to you know you you you you're
you're wearing thin you know you're kind
of like your channel's bigger you want
to operate at scale of whatever you know
if you built your subscriber base up to
a certain point you want to maintain
that and and you want to create videos
that can kind of live up to that and
keep that quality going keep that
pizzazz and that enthusiasm going which
I don't really have a problem with the
enthusiasm and however I am is how I am
on my videos but but I felt that even
out and about there were times when I
woke up and I didn't make a youtube
video like I normally do and I just take
off on a road trip and living up here in
Oregon you do a lot of road trips
because there's small towns there's not
much to do so you got to get in the car
and take off
well I it's it's there's been times when
almost I would say every time I feel
pressure I feel like okay well you know
we're kind of you know I'm with the
family but hey my channel is built
around creating a video every single day
so that's what I do that's what I say I
make a video every day so
that's the plan so yes I do feel that
pressure and at times it's difficult to
relax some days you don't want to make a
video right and so yeah I was just
listening to other youtubers talk about
this how when they started making in
daily vlogs everything just took off for
them and that's totally cool
you know and you got to bust your ass
you know I mean I can't even sometimes I
wasn't able wasn't able to really enjoy
a cup of coffee with my wife just
because I'm thinking about okay what's
the content I got to go in the office
and start writing the content for my
next video and in that in those times it
kind of sucks but then that again it's
it's very rewarding at the same time
okay because you know YouTube it does
pay for itself of course it pays for a
lot of things pays for equipment and
different things like that YouTube pays
the bills it does and then some you know
depending on what you're doing with it
so I do get that outside pressure I
don't want to be a disservice to anybody
and it used to really bother me I used
to feel like I had to always talk about
making money online and if I was not
doing that then I felt like well hey I'm
doing a disservice but then I come to
find out when those videos where I don't
talk about that I have a totally
different crowd a lot of different
people come out of the woodwork and make
comments on my videos some people I have
never seen before I didn't even know
they were subscribed to me so it's yeah
so instead of worrying about coming out
with the same videos and I don't know if
I'm getting a little bit off-topic here
but instead of coming out with these
repetitive videos that you feel like
you're fixed to do and you shouldn't be
fixed to be doing those I think we
should have more variety like I always
talk about and I had to talk to my wife
I said honey are they more interested in
is it the videos is it the click bait or
is it
me and she tells me she says it's me and
I have just from my past and where I've
come from I have a little bit it's a
little bit hard for me to accept that or
to believe that you kind of have to get
an outside opinion for these types of
things and that's it's a little weird
and YouTube is is really a great way to
find yourself you know I've talked about
this before and it's a way to discover
yourself and you almost can't plan it
it's just going to happen the way your
youtube channel is going to whatever
it's going to turn into it can't be
planned it's just going to evolve and
you're going to get feedback from other
people you're you're you know from more
than one person they might say the same
thing and you're gonna be like okay
maybe I should you know focus a little
bit more on this do a little bit more of
this and so yeah I do feel it from time
to time I don't feel it's right that I
should find myself into this bind where
I have to create the same repetitive
content every single day although it
does get attention helps the channel
grow and but at the end of the day you
know there is a there is a person here
and you know getting phone calls in the
middle of a video and stuff does happen
if I forget to turn off my Do Not
Disturb but it's really an interesting
journey it's it's different you know I
guess if you were posting or making a
blog you would post maybe a blog post
once a week where on bit on YouTube you
could just hit record and talk on the
microphone
and I don't discourage any I'm not
trying to discourage anybody out there
from doing this it's very rewarding and
it helps you because if anybody has ever
told you about have implied to you on
different ways that you are if you are
you've got some type of learning
disability or maybe you're just like
everybody else but you're just not quite
as good if you've ever felt that way
which a lot of that is BS YouTube is a
great way to help you kind of overcome
that those different beliefs that you
have about yourself that are not true
and but it's it's quite a journey guys
so I just wanted to make this video to
kind of talk a little bit about what's
what's on my chest you get off something
it's like a huge thing but get this off
my chest a little bit hopefully I can
speak for some other guys out there as
well because it is it is is it is a
constant pressure you know if you're
sitting that was you're sitting with
your family and you're having dinner or
lunch and it's you can't always relax
unless you the video is completed you
can write relax a lot more but if if
you're in a situation where you you know
you haven't created your video yet and
you're in it you have the stress that
comes that comes across and and then
there's another part of you that's
feeling like you know what it's my
youtube channel I can do what I want and
why am I putting myself through this why
how come I'm not enjoying myself with my
family how come I can't relax and that's
just not right
right you just feel like I should be
able to do that I should be able to
that's how life is all about right
instead of just having to always just
constantly feel that pressure all the
time so but thinking a lot about this
and
I'm not going anywhere but I just saw
Casey's video and it's not just me
it's a lot of people you know they built
up this Empire this whatever it is on
YouTube and they have that pressure to
just keep going so it's it's it can be
tough at times at the end of the day we
love doing it I love doing what I do but
anyway yeah I'll see you guys on the
next video peace out
