3 Small (Atomic) Tips for Creating Habits

Hey what's up team, Flynn Pat here.
I just picked up my boy Kounty from school.
And I was gonna tell him a little bit about this book
that I'm listening to right now called Atomic Habits
by a good friend of mine James Clear.
It's about how to get remarkable results
with just tiny changes.
Kounty Would you like to define for us what is a habit?
- A habit is something that you would usually do daily.
- Daily?
- Yeah.
- And the real definition of a habit is the fact
that you actually don't even have to think about it
you're doing it right?
- Yeah, like...
- Like it's automated.
- Yeah.
Brushing your teeth.
- Brushing your teeth can be a habit
because they do that every...
- Night or in the morning.
- Yes, very good.
Can habits be bad?
- Yes.
- What are examples of bad habits?
- Like not doing your New Year's resolution
like every year
or like you're not exercising a lot probably...
- What are some things that you could be doing all the time
that are bad?
- Like hurting someone's feelings
or like not giving your self healthiness?
- Yeah, like biting your...
- Nails?
- Biting your nails, or another bad habit would be smoking.
Right?
- Oh, yeah, that's so bad.
- So bad.
Okay, so what might you think a atomic habit would be?
- A really big habit that you've achieved.
- A really big habit?
- Yeah.
- Not like atomic bomb, that's probably
what you're thinking about, right?
But atomic like an atom, like a very small little thing
that makes up a larger, bigger thing.
And so atomic habits is about a lot of tiny changes
that you can make in your life
that can help you get really big results.
So I wanted to share with you in this video
three things that you can be doing on a very small level
that can have a massive change on who you become
and the habits that you form.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
Now the first thing I wanna teach you is that the best way
to keep a habit going it's not thinking
about the actual task that you wanna do.
For example, if your task is to become a YouTuber, right?
- Yeah.
- I know you have a YouTube channel.
We'll link to it up in the description for everybody
or link to it in the description and on the card right now.
And you've been doing really good with your YouTube channel.
And one thing that I know that you even got advice
from who was it, Coyote Peterson?
- Yeah.
- Who has a channel called Brave Wilderness,
he has millions of subscribers,
you got a chance to talk to him what and even ask him
what the most important thing is
when it comes to building a YouTube channel.
And he said "How can I improve your YouTube channel?"
- "How can your improve your YouTube channel?"
Well, the big trick to YouTube is consistency.
- Being consistent.
- Being consistent, that's right.
So you wanna make a good habit about filming
and just publishing content on YouTube.
However, it can become very difficult to think about,
oh, well, that means I have to get the video camera out
every time that means I have to edit all the time.
I mean that's a lot of work right?
- Think of ideas to even make the video possible.
- Think, come up with ideas for content.
That's a lot of hard work but a great way to think about
this is to not think of yourself as somebody who if you
wanna develop this habit has to film all these videos
and come up with these ideas and edit.
But if you just, live the lifestyle of a YouTuber,
like if you consider yourself if you say to yourself,
I am a YouTuber, and that's how you wanna live,
then you will do those behaviors to be who you wanna be.
- Yeah.
- That's like your identity.
So if you say, for example, not, oh, I have to go on a diet.
And so I'm gonna eat like no carbs
and this I have to struggle with all that.
If you just say to yourself, I am somebody who eats healthy,
I am somebody who lives a healthy lifestyle,
then you're gonna be more likely to do the things
that or who you wanna be.
- Yeah.
- That's lesson number one.
Now listen number two, this was a really great story...
Thank you, that James told about a guy in a wheelchair
who you might think of if you have a wheelchair
and you can't walk that wheelchair is the thing
that's kinda holding you back.
And so you might think to yourself,
"oh, I have to use this wheelchair"
Right, because your legs don't work.
Perhaps you got a bad accident or whatever the case may be,
you might be thinking to yourself, I have to use
this wheelchair and you might be sad all the time.
But if you just change that single word have to I get,
then it changes the whole thing.
So instead of saying that, you might say,
well, I get to use this wheelchair.
I get to eat healthy, I get to walk you to school every day.
I get to shoot videos for my YouTube channel,
then it becomes something that you actually
are proud of the fact that you have.
- Yeah, like we all cheer up some people even complaining
about walking.
So you technically got an advantage.
- Yeah, you have an advantage.
And especially if your legs don't work well,
now you're able to stay mobile and actually move around
because of the wheelchair that you have.
- Yeah.
- So really, this is a small tiny change that happens
in here in your mind that can really change your behavior.
And I've been using this every morning to wake up earlier.
Instead of going, "Oh, I have to wake up early."
I now go, "I get to wake up early."
And it motivates me more in the morning to exercise
and meditate and do all things I need to do.
- Yeah.
- There's a ton of content and advice
that James gives in this book.
But this one is, I think one of my favorites.
We have some friends over there saying hi, hi,
what's up?
But the third thing that I wanna share is that
in order to accomplish habits and make them actually
a habit, something that you do automatically
is that you always try to make it
as easy to start as possible.
And it's hard because if you think about
let's just take for example your YouTube channel,
there's a lot that goes into going
from idea to published YouTube video.
What what are some of those things
that you have to do in the whole process?
- Edit like film and think of the idea of filming the video,
Think of the idea.
So if you wanna become a YouTuber, and be consistent
thinking of all those different things,
and all those different parts can sometimes derail you.
Because you're like, oh, wow, that's so much work to do.
- Yeah.
- So the easiest way to make it a habit
is to just figure out what the first two minutes
might look like.
So if you are going to try to establish
this habit of filming videos all the time, let's try
and rewind, like, okay, well, what might the first step be?
In that whole process that you just shared?
- Probably thinking of the video idea.
- Okay, now let's rewind that even more.
When you're thinking of the video idea,
what's the first thing that you could do even before that?
Maybe taking out a pen and a piece of paper, right?
- Yeah.
- To write down those ideas.
So if you just focus on that first step,
like having a pen and paper already ready available,
and that's going to be the first thing you do,
then that will then lead to the next thing,
which then leads to the next thing.
So without even worrying about the camera,
or the title of the video, and the thumbnail, right,
all those things let's just worry first
about getting that pen and paper
and writing down a bunch of ideas for...
- Or whatever your start is.
- For your video, whatever your start is.
For many people who wanna exercise like,
"Oh my gosh, I have to go and bike for 30 minutes,"
"That's a lot of work."
Well, what if you just put your workout clothes
by your bed the night before.
So that when you wake up, boom, your workout clothes
are their, first steps already done
it takes less than two minutes.
And now you're already dressed to go exercise,
you might as well do it.
- Yeah.
- So narrowing down those big goals and habits
that you wanna form into the first two minutes,
it's called two minute rule that James says
it's a great strategy.
So any final words of advice for people Kounty
who wanna try and develop a habit?
I know you're right now in the middle of developing
your habit of filming YouTube videos,
and you just got back from break.
- Yeah.
- So it's gonna be interesting to see how you can fit
that in into your school schedule and all the things
that you're doing outside of school.
But any words of advice for people who are trying
to develop a good habit for themselves
and be a better person?
- Yeah, read this full book.
It will really help.
- Yeah, I'll tell James you've said that.
He'll probably enjoy that.
But read the book Atomic Habits.
I'll put a link in the description below.
And team Flynn you're amazing.
Let me know what you think.
And also tell me one habit that you wanna establish
this year or that you're trying to work on right now.
Do you have any other habits
that you're trying to get better at?
- I don't know.
- You don't know?
Well that's also another step is to know kind of
what your goals are and what your habits might wanna be.
So we can sit down and chat about that later right.
- Yeah.
- Cool.
Thanks, man.
- I can probably come up with some better habits.
- Better, but as long as it's something
that is important to you, that's another sort of bonus
tip for you is that it's easier to do these habits
when it's something that's really important to you,
something meaningful.
- Like exercise.
- Exercise, but why might exercise be important to you?
- Because if you don't have exercise,
you won't be healthy enough to do the things you wanna do
or strong enough.
- Yeah or take care of the people
that you wanna take care of.
- Yes most importantly.
- That's right, love it.
Thanks buddy.
I appreciate you team Flynn, you're amazing.

you're trying to establish this year.
