Financial Independence Doesn't Work For Everyone- Matt Giovanisci - Moneylab.co

my stance on Phi is I feel like I am
that I feel like I'm Phi but I'm not Phi
in the mathematical sense where you're
like well I don't have a million dollars
in the bank and I'm taking 4% you know
and and living off forty thousand
dollars a year but I don't have a
traditional job if I stopped working
today I could still make money for a
very long time because I do have a team
and people and they all have their jobs
so I feel financially independent in
that sense so I don't think it's the
traditional way that the community goes
about it cuz it's not you know running a
business is not everyone's approach but
that's it has been my approach because I
have the personal finance podcast we do
end up talking a lot about financial
dependents and we've had Pete mister
money mustache on in one of our earlier
episodes in 2014 which really helped our
our podcast to grow because like no one
had heard his voice then yeah and so it
was like one of the first interviews he
ever gave it was just an hour-long
interview with you know him me and
Andrew just kind of like talking about
him and and what do you and how he did
it and it was like whoa okay holy crap
so I feel right now that it is important
to have five principles you don't
necessarily have to like dedicate your
life to it or consider it but like I
definitely think the elements in Phi and
the idea of like just or fire you know
like financial independence retire early
there's so many good things there right
and I subscribe more to what
Remiel teaches which is kind of this
money dial system or just the automation
parts of personal finance and investing
and all that stuff but and I don't
really subscribe to like make your own
soap that's kind of I burn you know to
the community it's like I'll go buy soap
it's like I'm not you know I do make my
own beer so there is something fire
about that but yeah so I love the
movement I think it is really it doesn't
work for everybody and it shouldn't but
I could see a lot of people like if they
were to like how I think I think what
the fire community needs to do is spread
the message to communities that are not
affluent you know cuz I feel like it's a
very affluent movement same with
minimalism
I have my criticisms of both because
it's like well I mean guess who can
guess who has the option to be
minimalist I guess who has the option to
be fired you know it's like not everyone
has that option but I know that they
need to to start moving in that
direction
but I'm what what scares me a little bit
is what happens in a recession again
what happens in a correction even are
those people who are in on the verge of
like spending the last ten years like
sacrificing their you know not everybody
sacrificing but sacrificing saving half
or seventy five percent of their income
that day it's like oh you can't take
that money out because it's 50% of it's
gone yeah which was what happened in
2008 but I think we're still just kind
of like you know hurt from that
experience and it's like it happened so
not that long ago like 11 years ago and
so it's like it's gonna happen again
it's like when 9/11 happened a next next
next year it's like and it hasn't so
it's like you know it's just that let
fear to of like you know burn me once
and I think well you highlighted it well
I mean most people I mean you have a
non-traditional job you had a
non-traditional trajectory yeah and I
know like Pete Karl the other guys we
know of there Todd yeah but other folks
they they still do stuff they're like
quite active they have hobbies
yeah there were two right yeah yeah and
um I mean I had a corporate gig for 10
years or so and I kind of fit in the
like the technique in that path did you
say in half for those 10 years not half
but we saved a lot yeah and then and
then I was doing the side hustle thing
right yeah all at the same time like
right when I got laid off yeah so things
are pretty good and it's like per the
math like well we're in pretty good
shape I never really talked about it so
specifically share people yeah I mean
you're the fact that you're doing what
you want and you know how to you know
claw your way out of you know wherever
you're at right some money now you can
write really well you can do YouTube you
do podcasting like yeah if you can't get
a job
oh yeah you wouldn't want to no I
wouldn't want to but if I always say
like if I had like like one I'd
they live in a cardboard box that work
for anybody else sure so I will I'd
rather do that and that's still I still
true to form but if I have to I do have
a lot of skills that I have like kind of
gained during this whole like me trying
to turn this into a career that I needed
freelance write or do website design
which is what I used to do and you know
and still do everyday I have skills that
people need so I will have like a lot of
little mini clients but man I will not
have a boss again
that's not gonna happen and that's like
everyone has that like you know what
drives you and to do any of this stuff
and I'm like mine's negative like minds
like minds like I don't want to work for
a frigging idiot ever again like I just
don't want to work for doesn't matter
who it is you still want to work for
somebody because I'm like well I'm I
feel like I just I'm just so you know
like anti-authority and I don't you know
hero-worship like I don't have heroes I
don't have like people I look it's like
you know people yeah like I just have
friends who like you know either do the
same thing or do different things or
whatever we're kind of all in the same
world and I'm like this is great like I
can learn something from you you can
learn something for me and you don't
have to be here I don't have to look up
to you and collect I want to be like you
it's like now I can we can be like each
other and kind of move up together
COO or not move up who cares right on
yeah
you
