- Have you ever tried to plan something

and just get completely overwhelmed?

Maybe even get a headache?

Or maybe just takes so much time

or you're just not looking forward to

figuring that thing out.

So make sure you stick around,

'cause I'm gonna give you the PAT formula

and the one tool that I use

that makes planning anything dead simple.

Now it doesn't matter what it is that you're planning.

Maybe it's a project like building a business,

or writing a book

or even something smaller like

creating a podcast episode or a blog post.

Or maybe you're planning some sort of event of some kind.

Maybe something like a party that's coming up

or maybe a trip or a vacation that you're gonna go on.

Or maybe even as big as something like a wedding.

Planning these things are really important

because obviously you wanna make sure

these things are great,

but you also want to have a roadmap to completion.

And our brains, they do a really good job of

coming up with a bunch of ideas,

but a terrible job of organizing them.

It just becomes a mess and this is why we get overwhelmed.

So what is this magic PAT formula?

Well it involves three things:

number one, post-it notes,

number two, arranging those post-it notes,

and then number three, taking it and then making it.

Alright so first let's talk about post-it notes.

(laughs)

Post-it notes are my secret to success.

I literally use them to plan almost everything I do.

And the reason they're so great

is because you can take all the ideas in your head

that's a mess, that's overwhelming you,

put them onto these post-it notes

and then when you can see it,

you can deal with it.

The size is perfect because

they pretty much only have room

for like one idea per post-it note,

and because they're sticky,

you can post them up on the wall.

You can see visually just what was in your head,

and you can start to make sense of it all.

So first step, whatever it is that you're planning,

write down every single idea you have,

one idea per post-it note,

and then post it on the wall.

It might look something a little like this.

It kind of looks like a giant mess,

and this is what it'd look like in your brain.

This is something called mind-mapping that we're doing

using post-it notes as the tool to help us.

Part two of this strategy is the A,

which stands for arrange.

Now that you can see everything,

you can deal with it.

You can start to clump them together into clusters,

groups that sort of make sense.

You can remove some post-it notes

at this time as well that just don't belong.

These clusters then become

the different parts of the vacation

or the chapters of your book

or the sections of your online course.

And then to take it one step further,

let's take each cluster and now put an order to them.

So within that chapter, for example,

now you have the different parts of that chapter.

Or the stories that you wanna tell,

or the points that you wanna make.

You can start to make sense of this all,

and it's really cool because

now this big project or trip or event

that you had in your head that was a mess

is now starting to take shape.

And the third part of this strategy is the T,

which is to when you start to work on this project,

take one post-it note, that one idea,

and then you just focus on that.

You take it, and then you make it.

So if you're writing a book for example,

you take that one part from that one chapter

and that's all you need to work on right now.

Then when you're done,

maybe you fold it or remove it

and then you can move on to the next one.

Or maybe you're planning some sort of party

and you know that you need to have

some sort of entertainment there,

so you pull the entertainment post-it note out

and you go okay, my job right now,

only thing I'm gonna focus on is finding the entertainer.

So, maybe you might get Bozo the Clown.

- Bozo the Clown, whoa nelly!

- Alright, again so to recap,

first, post-it notes.

That's your brain dump.

Number two, arrange, put them into groups,

and then number three, one at a time,

you take and then you make.

Now some of you might be tempted to do this process

without post-it notes,

and it can be done,

but there is something to be said

for having one idea on each individual post-it note

that you can move around and adjust

and then tackle one at a time.
