this is a teardown of the public case
study that Alex Cooper is running this
is the best roof box website it's an
Amazon affiliate site Alex from WP Eagle
has been covering it on his channel
extensively over the last several months
this is a site that's making money we're
gonna take a deep look at some of the
affiliate content and we're also going
to look at some of the informational
content as well I'm going to critique it
and tear it down by the way my name is
Doug Huntington and on this channel we
normally talk about Amazon affiliate
marketing just like this kind of site
SEO and some productivity if you like
some other videos as well by the way I
am
going to do a series on best roof box so
if you're just seeing this one video be
sure to check the description because
number one I've interviewed Alex about
this site specifically and there are
videos where I talk about the keywords I
look at a brief overview of the homepage
and so on so be sure to watch the other
videos since I talked about the homepage
previously I'm going to move on and
we're gonna take a look at the about
page first and then we're gonna look at
a specific buying guy so on the about
page I think this is kind of an
important page Alex has a video here
right off the bat and I'm not gonna play
it here but you could have a look you
can clearly see it's about you know roof
boxes so you can see that that's great
and there's a little call-to-action to
go ahead and subscribe to the channel so
that's interesting as we look here you
see that number one it's formatted well
so without reading any of the
information here it's not a huge wall of
text there are some rich formatting this
is an unordered list right here
that's an unordered list which is good
to break up the text and a picture of
the lovely Alex down there the website
editor so you can see just again it
visually looks pleasing they talked
about why they created the site alex is
mentioning that we have a team of
writers that help you get the best
information so you feel a little more
secur about the information that you're
reading here that's great he's also
linking to a few of the sort of
important pages on the site different
sort of boxes for different uses and
some how-to information so if Alex
reaches out to say a fellow blogger
maybe it's a travel blogger something
like that and says hey maybe we could
work together the travel bloggers may go
to best roof box comm check out the
about page to make sure alex is a nice
dude nobody wants to work with someone
who seems sort of shady or dodgy so
that's why the about page is important
for networking and to bring authenticity
to your site
alex has done a fine job here so no
complaints I think alex has been around
the block so he knows how to create such
a page let's go back and look at a
different article than we have before
and let's check out a buying guy let's
go into the Thule ultimate accessories
guide so number one off the bat I don't
love a sidebar I mentioned this in
another video I don't love sidebars
because I want the content to be in the
forefront I don't want to distract
someone from it with an ad over here I
don't want to distract them to click
over to another article and generally
it's not helpful all right that's my
stance on it if you're putting ads over
there then maybe you need to have those
have a sidebar to put ads but that's my
take I'd rather have content just in the
center and let that content shine no
distractions
quick note you'll see the alex has a
buying guides page here and then this is
a what looks to be a child page so
there's a little bit of a hierarchy
thing happening here I like that and I
think it's a good thing to do some
people may call this a silo some people
may call it a content cluster but
generally you could just see in the URL
structure this page is organized
underneath the buying guides section
from hierarchy perspective it is clear
and I like doing that number one thing
we see here I'm going to point it out
alex is disclosing the fact that he is
an affiliate that is very important if
you want to adhere to Amazon's
operating agreement then you need to do
that from an FTC that's Federal Trade
Commission standpoint you need to
declare that you get paid if someone
makes a purchase after clicking through
your link
alex has that here and you need to have
it before any affiliate links as we
scroll down we see this nice what seems
to be a pitiable image right here so
that's great
someone may pin this it'll show up on
Pinterest potentially Alex will get some
traffic that way now we see there's
quite a lot of text here I would maybe
make these paragraphs a little bit
shorter
just from a readability perspective a
lot of people are on mobile phones a lot
of people are on other tablets or just
poor poor like screen with small screen
width so I'd like to have shorter
paragraphs just in general sometimes
they're only one sentence one thing my
point I want to point out here so Alex
doesn't have a call to action early on
here all right so this is an ultimate
guide to accessories and those are
products that a person would buy there's
no early call to action there must be
200 words here something like that I
mean this is a good chunk of text
there's no affiliate link here so I
would definitely have an affiliate link
somewhere in here if you look at the
wire cutter for example you'll see
almost 100% of the time they have a link
early on it allows people that are in a
hurry just to head over to Amazon and
make a purchase additionally Alex did a
good thing here but I want to tweak it
so he links over to roof boxes for
something like rooftop carriers is the
the anchor text and he's linking over to
carrier systems same brand so it's fuel
however you say that and the problem is
someone came here to learn about
accessories and if you enter link which
is a good thing but you do it too early
you don't want someone with a TD to end
up deep in into your site they get
distracted they forgot what they were
looking for and then they think oh shoot
I have to
stop my break from work and get back to
work here and then they never actually
click your affiliate link so don't
distract people I would put those
internal links in the second half of the
article just a rule of thumb you don't
have to follow it exactly but my take is
you don't want to distract people before
they're getting into the meat of it
moving on table of contents is good I
like this table of contents because it's
not too long it does look to be like
there's some sort of duplicate number
situation here I don't know why it's six
point six point that makes no sense to
me obviously some sort of issue here if
I click it it makes me jump down so it's
not like something will expand if I
click it now I like it again it is brief
sometimes you see a table of contents it
takes up the whole page you don't want
to you don't want to see that you don't
want it to take up the whole page so
moving on
you see there's seven different
accessories and there's a link or
there's an image here I'm not sure where
he got this image now if he pulled this
image from the Amazon API the advert
advertising API or via a plugin like I
guess AWP or a malanez Pro something
like that and it's using the Amazon
affiliate API you have to link so
there's no link here and if this if this
image is pulled via the Amazon
advertising API and he is not linking to
Amazon then that is a violation of the
operating agreement now I don't know
where he pulled this image from he may
have taken it himself you may have
snagged it from the manufacturer has
permission to use it I'm not sure but I
will quickly inspect it and I'm not sure
oh it's showing me some sort of smaller
version here but I will quickly inspect
it and I will see I can see that this
image has been downloaded so I don't
know where Alex got the image but that
is something to be mindful of all right
you if you violate any of the operating
agreement then you can get kicked out so
as we
we see he has an image or sorry a video
here that's great it's good to have a
video people can watch a review on the
specific item and then potentially make
the purchase this is a nice button here
it's contrasted from the background it's
easy to read if you watch the previous
video where I did a no overview there's
some buttons that are like dark blue
with a dark gray and you can't read it I
have no idea mistake I think Alex
probably made a mistake from it as we
scroll down typically this is exactly
how things go you will see an image
there's a little bit of a summary and
then you have a call to action to go
over to Amazon so I'm not gonna continue
to repeat myself but this is generally
pretty good one improvement I would
suggest is oftentimes there are
technical specs or details about the
product I would put those in here and I
would put them in a bullet format so
that they're easy to read you want this
stuff to be skimmable again we see the
same stuff image a link and turn a link
which is great a YouTube video and a
call to bath call-to-action so overall
this is pretty good I would maybe make
the paragraphs a little bit shorter
maybe one to two sentences just so it's
a little more punchy I would make sure
there are some rich formatting like
ordered lists unordered lists tables
whatever just to break it up a little
bit more I like the buttons and calls to
action
I like the videos and I would
potentially make sure these images are
pulled in a proper way if they are not
pulling in the proper way you can get
kicked out of the Amazon affiliate
program they don't joke around about
that stuff so you can see that maybe
sites get away with it I don't know if
Alex got these images from the
manufacturer or took them himself or
something else that is allowable but
something to keep an eye out for I'm
going to head back to the home page and
we're gonna check out one of the how-to
articles just briefly quick note this is
part of a series so be sure to check out

it's important to have how-to articles
or informational articles on your
website so that there's a good balance
of content you don't want to have just
affiliate content will we see here in a
nice image we have a nice pinnable image
here it's less concerning to me to have
internal links where maybe it distracts
people from the reason they're here but
it's definitely related now one thing I
just noticed from a just typography or
typography typography situation here
this line is sort of on top of the
previous line so there needs to be a
little bit more spacing I'm no designer
but I'm sure Alex would agree with that
so a little nitpick on that as we scroll
down we see the great table of contents
again I like the the brevity but I don't
like the double numbers obviously some
sort of a typo what we'll see here is a
Alex's wisely I thought this was a pure
informational kind of post but it looks
to be affiliate related so there's
there's products there's hair styling
products there's snacks so there are
many products here that can be
recommended and this is a good a good
way to do it so what not to take on your
family vacation so you're mentioning it
seems like it's gonna be a how-to
article but Alex is able to recommend
products that seem like you would want
to bring them on a road trip so this is
a great way to approach it
