hey miles here miles Becker calm this
video is about social media marketing
versus search engine marketing
specifically the goal is to help you
decide which is best for your business
so you could move forward confidently
one of the biggest challenges that every
one of us entrepreneurs have is time we
don't have enough time to do all of the
things that are potentially there to
grow our business so what we need to do
is really focus in on the most important
ones that have the highest likelihood of
driving leads and conversions and
traffic and really ultimately driving
revenue that is the key so we need to
sometimes ignore opportunities that
other people online are touting as the
must be opportunities and we got a
really kind of formulate our game plan
and work our game plan now I operate a
little bit in both worlds I'm a search
engine marketer for sure and I also run
lots and lots of paid Facebook
advertisements so I do a lot of social
media marketing as well
I am personally biased towards search
engine marketing you'll understand why
here soon but I figured I'd throw that
out there first of all cuz I mean we're
all human we all operate through our
biases anyways so let's talk about the
nuts and bolts from a perspective of
your business because the first thing
you need to realize is or think about is
what is the user behavior behind your
customers when they're really kind of
coming into your ecosystem when they're
interested in that which you are selling
is it a need is it something they need
like I need to solve this problem or is
it a want not something they need but
now that'd be nice
if I had something like that that would
speaking there's a very strong divide
between the once and the needs and
things that people want are usually able
to be marketed pretty well on social
media things that people need are often
extremely lucrative to market on search
engines this means that if your water
heater explodes in your house and you
need a plumber that plumber better be
showing up on the search engines because
the user behavior is gonna go to their
phone they're gonna type in plumber
maybe 24/7 plumber in my town and
whoever shows up on that first page of
Google is going to get that phone call
and ultimately is
to get that job whereas if you have
invented a new fashion accessory right
it's not something and then anyone goes
out and searches for because you
literally invented it maybe it's a new
hair wrap type thing for women and
you're trying to get the word out well
that situation the interruption format
of marketing on social media can be a
great way for you to get your hook your
big idea and your message out in front
of your target audience generally
speaking on social media we have a lot
of really powerful controls over our
advertising on who we display our ads in
front of whereas on search engines the
big control factor is the keyword is the
search phrase and ultimately the search
intent behind that phrase there really
should be another distinction made
whether you're looking to invest in
traffic right if you're ready to pay
thousands of dollars per month to get
through the learning curve you know for
maybe three four five six months until
you actually get to the point where
you're ready to or you're able to start
converting consistently cold traffic
into customers at either a break-even or
profitable rate or if you don't have any
income to kind of any disposable income
around to invest in this sort of
advertising and you're 100% focused on
using your efforts your time and your
energy to build up your marketing that's
usually the other big divide for most
people and the people who don't have
enough time and have enough income it's
often good to go towards the social
media paid advertising route because if
time is the kind of limiting factor for
you but you have five thousand or ten
thousand dollars you're looking to
invest in advertising over the next year
or so then you're in a position to be
able to leverage those monies to get a
lot of reach and get your messaging out
in front of the right people but again I
wouldn't if you're in that position and
you are the plumber that we use in the
previous example and that user behavior
is I have a problem I have an urgent
need in my life I'm gonna go search for
the solution right now I definitely
wouldn't go with Facebook advertising in
that situation there is the Google paid
ads platform which is one opportunity
there between the
organic variations of the marketing for
each right so organic search engine
marketing and organic social media
marketing there's a drastic difference
in the long-term return on your efforts
that you put in
now organic means that we're not paying
to get the reach we're using our effort
we're publishing content natively on
each of the platforms so a social media
an organic social media marketing
campaign would be posting natively to
snapchat posting natively to Facebook
posting natively to Instagram doing
Facebook lives running a Facebook group
posting natively to LinkedIn those are
kind of the sort of activities around
organic social media marketing search
engine marketing is generally going to
be focused on leveraging the traffic
from one of two locations Google and
YouTube now there's a lot of other
search engines but those two are the big
one too and all of numbers three through
ten right the beings the yahoos of the
world the duck duck goes etc those don't
even all add up to reach the number two
and to get the search volume that
YouTube gets so on the organic search
engine marketing side you're really
talking about Google and YouTube the
cool part here is that they run on a
very similar algorithm which means the
back end of what makes them work is very
very similar so when you learn how to
optimize your content for the search
engines for one of those two you can
usually leverage that knowledge to apply
it towards the second one so for example
I started with this YouTube channel to
get my messages out to the world really
understanding the YouTube algorithm then
when I started having a team turn my
videos into written blog posts I was
able to apply that same SEO idea those
same concepts that I had been leveraging
towards my written content and now I'm
getting traffic from Google as well for
the same ideas right now here is the
biggest reason why I'm much larger of a
proponent and a bigger fan of search
engine marketing and it's that you can
get residual rewards and residual
results for the effort you put forth in
your content marketing and another way
to look at this is to kind of ask
yourself what is the
shelf-life of a post that goes on to
each of the platform's so when you post
to Instagram or Facebook what is the
shelf life of that post how long does
that post show up in other people's
timelines for you to be able to get
engagement reach and ultimately connect
with new people you've never met before
or with segments of your audience who
already know who you are generally
speaking you're maybe gonna get a one to
two day reach from every post that you
put up now if you apply that same
thought process to Google and YouTube
how long can you potentially get reach
get exposure and get traffic from a post
that you publish on YouTube or Google
well my wife and I are kind of active in
this experiment and my wife is still
getting traffic from posts that she
created over nine years ago this is the
residual reward or the residual result
that I'm speaking of that is so powerful
when you build up enough content and you
become a trusted content provider in the
eyes of the search engines the other way
to look at it this channel you're
watching right now just cross the 70,000
subscriber mark and some of my most
popular videos that drive the most reach
the most engagement and get the most
views which also result in the most
opt-ins for my email list were actually
created over a year ago some of them
were literally 18 months or more this
means that one day randomly 18 months
ago I made a video on a topic I thought
it'd be a good idea I was like I'll make
a video on that today so I made my video
and that video has been an asset for me
and for my online business every day
since consistently connecting me with
hundreds if not thousands of new
visitors new viewers new subscribers to
my channel
the sar pretty crazy it can be you know
upwards of a thousand every few days new
viewers from some of my very old videos
the subscriber numbers my list grows
kind of on autopilot by about thirty or
so subscribers every single day to my
email list and this is all based off the
efforts I did in the past
take a look at the view numbers on this
video right now now I don't know if
you're watching it the day I published
it or seven days or ten days after I
published it but the odds are the view
numbers are gonna be under five thousand
because most of my videos don't get that
many views but some of them do and some
of them have received hundreds of
thousands of views so my job as a
Content marketer leveraging the search
engines is to simply go forth and
publish great content with a very very
consistent frequency I've chosen I
started at first I did a video day every
day for 120 days and currently I'm
focused on three videos per week some of
my videos do extremely well quickly I
get thousands and thousands of views
within the first 48 hours other videos
get a few hundred and they might get a
thousand or two within the first week or
so it doesn't really matter to me
because everyone is a small asset and
when a user next year searches for the
phrase social media marketing versus
search engine marketing there's a really
good chance that this video that I'm
recording today will show up in their
feet and if they like my thumbnail my
title they'll click and watch and that
has just introduced someone in the
future
to my content to me and I get the
residual rewards and the residual
resorts from my effort as a content
marketer now with that said it generally
takes more time and energy to create a
video than it does to create a YouTube
or excuse me to create a YouTube video
than it does to create a Facebook post
or an Instagram post right so there is a
little differentiation in the process of
creating and publishing the content but
that's why I started by doing a hundred
and twenty day challenge and really
focusing to push myself as a content
creator on the YouTube platform it got
me through the learning curve quickly my
wife started her main website that
currently still gets over 8 million
visits each and every year whether she
blogs or not mostly based on all of the
past effort that she's done in the past
right for the last nine years she's been
publishing content and the results of
that is a very consistent 8 million
visits per year to her website she
started with a 90 day content marketing
challenge focused on blogging she wrote
one keyword focused blog post every
single day for 90 days and that started
her momentum it got her really kind of
comfortable with the process
of creating and publishing the content
it gave us an opportunity for me to
teach her search engine optimization
which is kind of in the layout I have a
great video on learn SEO if you're
interested it helped me
gave me the opportunity to teach her
keyword research so she focused her
posts that she was creating on specific
keywords that we had data showing that
people searched on a very regular basis
right thousands of people a month search
for specific phrases and then she
created the content so to take that same
idea here I can tell you from a little
bit of research I did for this exact
phrase social media marketing about
33,000 people per month search you
search Google excuse me not youtube
search Google for that phrase on the
search engine marketing side it was much
closer to about two to three thousand it
was significantly less so I know to
title this video to focus this video on
the social media marketing phrase that's
why it's at the very beginning of the
title but I'm going a little bit deeper
into the optimization and the how-to
again I have a learn SEO if you just
search for learn SEO you'll see a video
with my face on it it's a free class I
did live it's a really really
comprehensive class on SEO and then
check out the keyword research kind of
side of things the last comment that I
want to share the last idea that I think
you as a business owner need to be aware
of is the kind of methodology at which
social platforms grow so social
platforms are network based and they
ultimately need lots and lots of users
and lots and lots of user generated
content to create engagement for the
other users if no one's posting things
and no one's connected with other users
there's really no sense for a social
media platform so generally the kind of
s-curve of the growth of these social
media platforms is the early adopters
are able to get a lot of reach for the
content they published natively
organically on the platforms but then
once the network grows to a point where
everyone's on Facebook how are you not
actually on Facebook and that becomes
the mindset versus oh what's this new
Facebook thing then the game changes and
they start to limit the reach from every
organic post and they start to install
systems to get you to pay to get the
same reach that you used to get in the
past now this is a
problem is just something to be aware of
it's a very common path that just about
every single social media platform has
taken Facebook and Instagram are both
owned by Zuckerberg and they are clearly
on this exact same path so the days of
free reach and great audience growth
through social media kind of platforms
owned by Zuckerberg is over and
ultimately the one real way to grow a
big-time audience on those platforms
which ultimately you want to grow your
own list is by paying which can be
extremely lucrative my team and I still
spend thousands and thousands of dollars
every single month we bring in tens of
thousands of new subscribers every
single month from paid social media ads
but I did not start running paid social
media ads until my main business that
was focused on the search engine
marketing side first grew to a point of
generating roughly ten to fifteen
thousand dollars per month when those
business machines and that took me about
four years on my first business when
that machine was running successfully
enough that the content we had created
and the products we were offering an
email list opt-in system that we had in
place was working well enough to
generate about ten to fifteen thousand
dollars per month at that point I was
ready to start investing my time energy
and money on learning the ads platform
and took me a long time and it took me a
lot of money to really really figure
that game out and since I was playing
with profits right I was playing with
house money I was comfortable losing
money and learning how the plan how the
process went I looked at it as if I had
to pay my tuition right if you want to
go to college you got to pay tuition I
got over fifty thousand dollars in
student loan debt when I went to college
so I looked at the Facebook ads platform
they're like okay there's gonna be ten
to twenty thousand dollars worth of
tuition but when I learn it when I get
my degree from the School of Hard Knocks
of learning the Facebook Ads platform I
should be able to make more than enough
to cover the initial expenses and beyond
back and that has been true that has
held very true for me but here's a
challenge a lot of people who go into
paid social media marketing right away
they're on a bootstrap budget and they
don't necessarily have the patience and
they don't necessarily have the bankroll
to put
essentially spent five ten fifteen
thousand dollars in learning before
finding one thing that works extremely
consistently I hope this video has been
helpful if you're really in a bootstrap
mode you're you're committed to growing
a business online you know that your
path is to become an internet
entrepreneur and you don't have a big
bankroll know that my wife and I started
this entire web-based empire that we've
created with ninety five dollars and
forty cents that is the exact cost of
hosting for one year for us to build our
first WordPress website and the domain
name and that's what we started with and
from there it was just energy and we've
built it all from there through hard
work focusing on creating content that
aligns us with the search engines so
when someone searches for a phrase like
social media marketing versus search
engine marketing our content shows up
and now in the nine 10 plus years we
have thousands upon thousands upon
thousands of posts of videos that all
rank on the different search engines so
when millions of visitors per month are
searching for phrases they're looking
for information on our content shows up
as possible results in the search engine
results page that's how we're leveraging
our time
we're still getting massive amounts of
positive results for a business in the
form of attention traffic leads and
revenue from all of our past efforts and
that's because we focus on social excuse
me that's because we focus on search
engine marketing now we do social media
marketing as well if I had to choose one
which I did when I started this brand I
went all-in on search engine marketing
and it's worked wonders yet again here
in 2018 so that's my personal take on it
as you could tell I am a little bit
biased towards the search engines but it
allows you to get in more of a rhythm
and get a lot more value and long-term
value after out of the effort you're
putting in versus being on this
perpetual hamster wheel of having to
make two or three Instagram posts every
day having to make two or three Facebook
posts every single day having to
constantly be feeding the social network
at a very very rampant pace all of the
kind of content they need to give you
reach while experiencing the declines in
reach from that content that you're
because that is the path but again if
you have some new interesting product
that's never been known before no one's
searching for it because they've never
heard of you sometimes getting your
message out in front of your audience
through social media is a great way to
get the word out about your product to
drive leads and drive sales but know
that the best way to do that today in
2018-2019 and beyond is with paid
Facebook Ads not through the organic
side that side has really kind of died a
slow painful death for many and they're
just gonna keep tightening the screws
down but I'm still playing the ads game
you can play that too I have a lot of
videos that teach how to run Facebook
ads if you search specifically for my $5
a day Facebook Ads strategy that really
summarizes the approach that I still use
to this day for running my Facebook Ads
again on the organic content marketing
side for search engine marketing I
recommend my learn SEO video and my
