this is the webinar the free training on
content for affiliate sites
I'm Doug Pennington founder of niche
site project I talk about affiliate
marketing usually Amazon affiliate
marketing and project management
productivity hopefully you can hear me
so let me know in the chat if you could
hear me I see Mario's on tell me where
you're from as well always nice to hear
that and it fits your first time on one
of these free live training so welcome
everyone
like I said let me know if you could
hear me that is always the first thing
to check I'm funny thing I've won at one
time maybe more than one but I've done
like thirty minutes of a presentation
when there were maybe one or two people
on they couldn't hear me the whole time
thing didn't record at all so that's why
I always check it overemphasize it so
hope everyone's doing well today it is a
great day in Bozeman Montana weather's
nice sunny blue skies there's not too
much smog in the air so really awesome I
see all Wayne is in the house too so
welcome everyone today we're gonna talk
about content in generally it's
outlining content so this is sort of its
before you start writing I know when I
first started writing content for
affiliate sites I opened up a new
WordPress like post started looking at
the blank page and I didn't know what to
write in fact I had no clue and it was
the cool part about the techniques I'm
going to show you today ones rpm
research paper method the other ones FAQ
frequently asked questions they can be
used to like figure out how to write
content that is brand new right like you
found a keyword but you're not sure how
to organize the content so you can use
these ideas for that additionally if you
have content that's already published on
your blog maybe it's ranking kind of
okay but not super awesome then you can
also use these two techniques add
content
to stuff that's already there now I see
a few more people hopped on sometimes it
takes a few minutes for folks to join up
so I'll try to like burn a little time
just for a second there will be a replay
so I'll mention that if you have to drop
off I don't want you to you should you
should stay here live in fact I'm gonna
need your help in the session to help me
come up with ideas so you'll see how
fast this stuff comes together we have
Jenny on who is excited thank you and
then Brad as well by the way I know some
more people just hopped on so let me
know if it's your first time on a free
one of these free trainings here and
where you're from
so and I think people can hear me if
anyone can confirm and just say yeah we
can hear you done all right and Mario
what's up cool so I'm gonna I'm gonna go
ahead and get into there's a little bit
of an intro I do recommend that you turn
off your notifications on your phone so
I'm actually doing that now it's a good
reminder so turn the notifications off I
turned it off on my computer already
closed your other tabs you're not
looking at and try to you know let's
focus up recommend you get you know get
a notepad or something like a legal pad
here and take some notes
I find handwriting notes is a little bit
I remember it better than if I you know
type it out I'm a slow type or to Brad
first time from Missouri welcome good to
have you on all right I'm gonna start
sharing my screen here the overall point
and I'll remind you again to just you
know pay attention all right so
hopefully you could see the screen dawn
is on as well from Oh doesn't say where
but Jenny's from Washington State very
cool
all right so this is basically how you
can streamline content and I've gone
through multiple periods where published
you know hundreds of articles and this
was sort of instrumental in effectively
doing it without going insane now
there's
another portion a bit of like you know
working with freelancers figuring out
how to hire them and all that I'll cover
that in a couple weeks so if you're if
you're on this session keep an eye out I
hope you click the you know Auto what is
it called Auto subscribe to future
webinars but if you didn't just keep an
eye out like YouTube I usually make an
announcement like I did yesterday like
hey I'm doing a session coming up soon
so I'll talk about how you could hire a
lot of people closely related to this
but not directly alright so streamlining
content I'm Huntington welcome everyone
Nick from the UK we have some other
folks in so thanks everyone for hopping
on and I'm pretty sure people can hear
me since you're saying where you're from
so I'll assume that as I said I'm Doug
Pennington I started blogging a niche
site project a few years ago I liked
2013 that time frame and I like border
collie so that's my late dog Brody
they're my pop wherever it Old Faithful
pretty close to Bozeman dam in
Yellowstone and then that's Georgie
who's sleeping at my feet right now she
we just adopted her recently so we like
dogs like dogs are in here and Georgie
is actually a really good frisbee
catcher that's another story for another
day
and she actually she placed in a
competition recently and there's a vlog
coming out about that so really excited
about about that I mean I was throwing
the discs and it was amazing okay so
moving on to what we're actually here
for why should you listen to me
basically that is why this is here so
I've been featured or quoted on a lot of
different sites many of them are like
SEO related some are more side hustle
related like site hustle nation and
others are just more marketing related
like maybe optinmonster or social
triggers where it was featured about a
year ago so that was pretty cool but the
point is I've been around the block a
little bit and you should listen to me
at least in in a few areas
I always put this time line in here and
if you've been to any other sessions you
may have seen this before the reason why
I put it in is number one a reminder to
myself that it's been an up-and-down
roller coaster journey and the other is
a lot of folks a lot of other marketers
they just cover the highlight reel and a
lot of times at least for me when I hear
the highlight reel it makes me feel like
I'm lacking in some way or somehow I'm a
failure or maybe I didn't get it quite
right and it turns out most people have
they're not an overnight success it's
usually you know a few years of figuring
things out so it at that point
um it's easy to forget right so once you
once you have the highlight reel like
that's way more exciting to talk about
but I'm not gonna read everything else
out here but basically I did like become
successful with my first few niche site
or at least like one of my first niche
sites rather the first couple were mess
and that kind of did a bad job but maybe
my fourth one was pretty good and I
launched a lot I failed quickly you know
I was able to basically within six
months or so like launched a site hit
$6,000 6450 to is what I have in this
timeline and then shortly after that my
site unfortunately was penalized by
Google and I lost my rankings and the
revenue went to like almost zero so
again ups and downs but I kept moving
forward I tried to not make the same
mistake again and I kept tried trying to
like refine my process figure out how to
make it repeatable using my project
management background which I kind of
left off earlier I have a PMP and I
worked about ten years in management
consulting and in like IT software
development that sort of area and I took
the frameworks from project management
and the sort of corporate ideas and then
I figured out how to you know create a
framework
for launching site in making it
repeatable so anyway whenever you hear
the highlight reel from people just
remember like usually they had a long
journey
it's very rare where someone comes out
of the gate and they've like just kick
ass it's possible but it's very unusual
I mean I see Daniel has a question here
so when why I open the five figure niche
site course you always seem to miss it
and so at this point I'm trying to allow
people Daniel to enroll at any time so
let me know like you'd shoot me an email
later but I could also place a link in
in the in the chat here so I'm trying to
allow people in previously I was only
launching once a quarter but I'll put a
link in here before the end of the
session so you can get in there in fact
I'll do it on the early side right now
so you can check it out and don't get
too distracted with it but I know Daniel
actually I'll just send it to you
individually I try to not do these as
you know pitch fest or anything like
that so he'll reply to / in private so
there you go Daniel
there's the link all right so that's my
introduction like I said I've I've had
some success and I've been featured in a
few places and that's why you should
listen to me okay so Q&A is generally at
the end we have a pretty you know tight
group today there's not too many people
so if it's relevant I'll try and answer
the questions as we go if if we're
trying before in the flow I will keep
going with the content but this is going
to be interactive all right so we're
gonna get started in like a minute or so
here but I'm gonna need your help so
it's great if you could chat back and
I'm actually gonna use your specific
ideas to do some of this okay
so Before we jump into a wine niche site
so first of all I think affiliate
marketing is a
place to start it has a very low startup
cost you have a pretty quick like
feedback loop and cycles so you can
launch your site usually within like
four to eight weeks one or two months
you'll have a pretty good idea if it's
getting traction and if you can continue
like growing the site there are other
like many other businesses
brick-and-mortar businesses restaurants
or whatever like you may have to put in
and invest you know 100 or 200 or 300
thousand dollars and then ya lose money
for two years and then maybe you get
some traction with affiliate sites like
you can figure out if it's gonna work
pretty quick the other great thing is
you learn about a bunch of different
things so you have a look at SEO for me
I didn't know anything about SEO or a
wordpress or domains or the website or
anything like that and you're able to
learn about all this stuff including
like writing content which we're talking
about today so sometimes people get into
affiliate marketing and they launch your
site maybe it's moderately successful
however maybe they figure out that they
love SEO and they start an SEO service
grow an agency and they're able to you
know make a great income on the part
that they love or maybe you figure out
that you love writing or maybe you
become a wordpress developer so it's a
great way to learn a diverse set of
skills and then you know stick with
affiliate marketing or you could branch
out and do whatever you want regardless
it's a good set of skills I ended up
learning about marketing which I had no
background in at all previously I CJ
jaidev's whatsup says will I share the
slides I think that's what you're asking
I typically don't but you'll get or
replay of this so in a couple hours
after this is done recording you'll get
an email so you could check it out then
I usually don't share the slides just in
general so if you really need to get a
hold of them
you could shoot me an email and I'll
probably I could probably share with you
alright so we're gonna go over to
content techniques and these are going
to be like a live demo we're gonna do
this in real time and it will need your
help I keep mentioning it because it's
way easier if I get your help than if I
do it on my own so just getting some
water been talking a lot today so number
one is the FAQ method this is the
frequently asked questions method and
it's very straightforward actually both
of these are pretty simple but I try and
give you a framework and you'll see like
as we go through like the actual
exercise like how easy it is so like I
said it's simple right
you write questions and then you answer
them one of the reasons why this is so
valuable especially if you like choose a
niche or a category or set of products
that you're not like super familiar with
like you'll be able to ask pretty
insightful questions and you literally
will have good questions if you need
ideas we'll go over that as well but
we're gonna go over today is how to
choose a beer glass so I enjoy beer if
you've seen very many of my youtube
videos you may actually see me drinking
a beer others I just talk about it like
today so it's it's only 3:00 in the
afternoon here's that technically too
early for a beer but just for today this
is just water here but how to choose a
beer glass and it turns out there's a
lot of stuff to get into however what
we're gonna do we're gonna just gonna
brainstorm questions so this is the
point everyone I need your help so if
you have questions or thoughts about
choosing a beer glass like just type
them in there's nothing too basic you
can just type them right in and what I'm
gonna do let me just make sure I know
the slide is next
[Music]
so we're gonna hop over to the the
Google Doc here I usually work in Google
Docs and this is what we're gonna do so
I like I mentioned I drink a lot of beer
I had a tasting not too long ago with
some friends these are if you know much
about Belgian beers some of these are
pretty hard to get and it was kind of an
invite-only situation anyway we drank a
lot of beers and it was really good
those are Belgian dark strong's you can
see the different glasses here that
we're using some of them are you know
specific election may or the West letter
in there others are just like tulip
style glasses so what we're looking for
now we're just gonna you know straight
up and do a numbered list and we're just
gonna type in the questions that we may
have so I'll get it started because I
don't see anyone asking questions about
beer glasses yet so I'll get us rolling
so we'll just say why are their ear this
and this is like a brainstorming
exercise and part of brainstorming if
you haven't done much of it is don't
edit
don't hold anything back just brainstorm
there are no bad ideas when you're
brainstorming it turns out there are bad
ideas however we're gonna kind of
evaluate the merit of these until
afterwards we just want to get the idea
out so I say Jenny says what's what's
the best one to use what's the best one
to use right that's good and then you
can even sort of extend some of this to
to anything related to serving beer cuz
I just thought of a couple ideas myself
okay why do you need different glasses
cool
why do you need different classes all
right now they're flowing
right why to you different beer glasses
should they have a handle nice NIC
should have a handle um that's okay nice
Brad and I'm just gonna start a Bri V
I'm a slow typer so we're just gonna
abbreviate so what's us four different
ears and should they be unbreakable
[Music]
breakable okay and then
Jaidev says maybe there's not many beer
addicts so okay that's cool are there
different sizes okay now and I'll make a
quick point so jaidev's said maybe
there's not many beer drinkers here
that's actually perfect because if you
don't if you're not an expert in the
topic then you should have many
questions right you should you should
have no like expert knowledge sometimes
when you have expert knowledge you don't
know the questions that people may have
now I'll mention as we like get towards
the end once we get in here I'll explain
if you don't have questions or maybe you
hit a snag you don't have any initial
ideas like J there are plenty of places
to go to get ideas about questions that
people have okay so are there different
sizes we mentioned the unbreakable
what's okay so more on size like we'll
say like why are there an FJ j if you
didn't like this topic you may not like
the next one either I'm actually a
certified beer judge I'm I'm really into
beer and I home brew beer and stuff like
that I'd like 20 gallons of beer and the
spare bathroom fermenting and stuff and
a kegerator outside so it's kind of my
wheelhouse
in fact I met a new friend today she may
be watching this later
Nicole and we had some coffee and she
actually brought me a six-pack of beer
which is in the refrigerator now thanks
Nicole
if you're watching okay so I'll just
throw out some others because like these
are great by the way so are there
different sizes why are there different
sizes we'll talk about the shape of the
glass and I'm not going to answer the
questions it's not important to answer
the questions as we go even though I
know the answers to some actually I know
the answers to all of these and I can
you know talk all about them the
important idea when you're brainstorming
is to just go it's very good to time
block this stuff as we're kind of time
blocked in this session I can't go on
and on and like a research you'll notice
I'm not researching anything I'm just
trying to come up with some ideas first
what everyone's help thank you all right
and then Daniel says oh I was gonna
write about the shape of the grass and
again I'm just gonna get some ideas out
you can always put these just like
jeopardy in the form of a question later
so daniel has a great one about stem
where versus like a normal glass bowl
flat glass how to clean properly
[Music]
properly how about this what's the right
and this is related to serving but now
related to glasses specifically you know
what's the right males had slash foam
and maybe like what kind of soap should
I use to wash
[Music]
okay but I think that's good
will they get one more so Jade goes okay
so jaidev's thanks for leading me
directly into the next part so here's
the deal you should if you're a curious
person if if you time block it and you
really think about it you should be able
to come up with a handful of questions
on your own most likely if you don't
have any idea maybe you hit a roadblock
or you don't know enough about the topic
to even come up with questions like you
don't know the vocabulary there are
topics like that and there are several
places you can go so I'll mention a
couple and one you can go to like forums
so for example beer right and home
brewing beer there are a few pretty
large forums and you can go look at the
board you can see the sticky notes and
you can see often frequently asked
questions about X given topic and there
are literally thousands or hundreds of
thousands of people that have
contributed their thoughts about you
know the common questions that they saw
in the forum and they created a sticky
and it's literally like not only the
questions are right there but the
answers are right there too now that's a
great source another another really good
place to go is a site called answer the
public and you can type in you know your
key word or the general topic and they
have like a question section and you
could use another tool called key words
everywhere to even see the search volume
within answer the public you can imagine
when the name like answer the public
it's very much question oriented so you
could probably hop over there type in
you know choosing beer glasses or
something about beer glasses or
something related to it and you'll see
dozens of questions and once you have
like a jumping-off point you can go
deeper and deeper so we're talking about
like the size of the glasses the
different shapes and all that stuff we
could even get into like should you put
your beer glasses in the freezer and
have them frozen should they be chilled
should they be room-temperature cellar
temperature all those details so as you
get more information as you're asking
more questions as you as you look at
forums for example you can see the
questions that people are asking now
further right you can also go to like
Amazon go to one of the products and
you'll literally see the questions that
people ask about the products now for
beer glasses it may not be super
relevant in that case you may want to do
a little research on like a magazine
type site or even literally in magazines
but of course we're doing this online
it's easier to just look up the the
magazine website and you can just find
an article on like choosing a beer glass
see what they cover turn those into
questions or questions that would lead
to the information in the article and
there you go the great part about this
is you could come up with a list after
you brainstorm you're gonna want to you
know get rid of the duplicate ones like
are there different sizes why are there
different sizes you may be able to pair
those up some of them are not going to
be relevant once you do a little like
investigation but essentially you can
give this list to a writer and say go
find the answers to these questions tell
them to write a hundred and fifty words
for each one and without too much
trouble that's like you know about two
thousand words something like that and
you're well on your way to having an
article and by the way this is one of
the ways that I wrote like early content
for many of my sites I didn't know about
the product so I asked a bunch of
questions looked up the answers and
answered them turns out it's really
helpful
okay so pretty straightforward and this
is a great technique so I mentioned you
can use this to write an article from
scratch
you're gonna have to put an intro in a
conclusion and make this you know in
some order that makes a little more
sense but the other super useful thing
is you can add an FAQ section to an
existing article and let's say your
article has a thousand words you come up
with a list of 13 questions 100 words a
piece you've more than doubled the
content on there alright and again you
just have someone go look up the answers
to these I mean basically you can google
the answer to each one of these and get
a couple sentences can't copying you to
put it in your own words all that stuff
but pretty effective okay and Jaidev
says never thought about Amazon comments
and the frequently asked questions so
yeah I mean you could see the concerns
that people have about certain products
really good place to get information
alright next rpm this is the research
paper method it goes back to a time when
we were in school I don't know how old
people are but there's a place called
the library and they have books they're
like print books and then we're
encyclopedias and we used to have to
write these research papers where we you
know went to the library we sat at those
big tables and we had to you know find
books in the card catalog like we had to
look them up pull them off the shelf
write a research paper that's exactly
what we're doing here except now we have
the internet and like Wikipedia and like
you just look it up right you could
google it and like a second or even ask
Siri which shouldn't even say that too
loud but the point is this is just doing
a research paper and it takes a little
bit more time to get the set up but it
is a little bit more in-depth and
jennice says that's what you did all the
way through high school
indeed yep these places called libraries
and in fact
this is a complete aside but you know
you should go to the library you can get
really good books and you don't have to
buy them all you can just check them out
and a lot of libraries have like ebooks
that you could check out for free and
read it on your Kindle or your tablet or
whatever you want to do so you know read
it's good you should do that so here's
the two-step process for this one you
research the topic and then you create
the outline so the main idea here is to
create the outline right so we're not
necessarily thinking about writing it
herself
although you could write it yourself
alright the main thing is like you come
up with the outline and then you could
write it or you can hire a writer to do
it I've typically hired a writer however
going back to the point that I made
before when I first was when I first
wrote content for affiliate sites I
opened a new post in WordPress and I was
like staring at the screen and I didn't
know what to write it was very stressful
the blinking cursor right the blank page
is tough to deal with if you have
something to go off of like an outline
it makes it much easier because you have
like the skeleton outline in place and
even if you have that you can you know
write a sentence for each one of them so
you have a little thesis for each part
of the outline and then you could beef
it up later
just taking it step by step makes it
much easier goal is to get an outline
where you could write it or give it to a
writer
so in this one how to judge beer so how
do you judge a beer again this is pretty
much in my area of expertise
I actually here in Bozeman I taught a
class to other perspective like you know
beer judges and may lay circuit tests
which I help administer so I know a lot
about judging beer however this is how
you would do the research so again we're
working directly in you know Google Docs
here you could do it on a piece of paper
it doesn't really
matter just keep it simple and remember
you don't have to like write the whole
thing here we're just creating an
outline so the way I like to approach it
is to just google the term that we're
looking for so in this case how to judge
beer and you can I recommend you know if
this is you know new or different for
you go ahead and like follow this method
but there's a lot of different ways to
approach this so I like to google it and
just kind of read about it and see like
what there is out there so Jesse's on
also what's up okay so and if people are
just joining up or you joined a little
bit late there is a replay that'll come
out after it's recorded you're gonna
link in your emails so don't worry if
you missed the first part you could
always go back just follow the link in
your email later on so first off BJCP so
this is the organization this sort of
oversees like the beer judging program
and there are other like certification
programs but that's a PDF so that'll be
a good way to like get an idea about
what's going on so I'll open that in
another tab then we have Beer Advocate
how to review a beer okay so this is
like more around reviewing a beer for a
site that publishes community reviews
okay so I'm gonna skip that one for now
and I'm gonna keep scrolling down so
winning homebrew comm will open that up
tag works beer tasting and how to taste
like a pro okay so how about this
judging for the first time here tips of
beer scholar how do a judge and evaluate
your beer and secrets actually this one
how to be a beer judge so craft beer
calm and happen to new that is a pretty
good site so we're gonna open that up as
well so we have a few to look at and
Linus asks if you'll be able to watch
this later so yeah there's a replay so
you'll get a link later in your email so
you'll be able
watch it again later okay so the idea
here is you're gonna like look at some
different sources since I kind of I kind
of knew what these sites were all about
I like picked a few and what we're gonna
do we're just gonna read them right
we're not gonna write anything in our
outline yet we're just gonna kind of get
an idea the lay of the land on this
topic and see how the contents organized
we'll kind of we'll just jump into it
all right so this PDF by Peter Garofalo
is really for beer judges right so this
is like the guide that I would print out
for going to a competition and giving
this to the judges like all right this
is like what we're gonna do step by step
so they're talking about the score sheet
and the other part is you know since
this is a PDF and I mean it looks to be
mostly single spaced it's dense all
right this is a one-pager but it's quite
dense it's not like an infographic or
anything like that a lot of information
on here and to a large extent a lot of
the info on BJ CPE is like that or from
the BJCP pretty dense pretty academic
and very like valuable but it's a little
tough now the good part is it tells us
how to progress through judging so the
score sheet we're talking about looking
at the bottle open the beer we'll look
at the aromas or will smell the aromas
we'll look at the appearance will taste
the beer we'll see you about the
mouthfeel and an overall impression so
that's kind of like how you go through
it and they talk further about like
actually judging so that's one piece of
data this will probably take you one to
two hours I'm accelerating the process
here for time right we don't have time
to go through everything and here this
obviously looks like a sort of an old
school site so winning homebrew comm
yeah I definitely look
like an older site just in general and
it's more of a like a blog style now
they do talk about like how to become a
a judge and how the BJCP teaches you to
evaluate beer so to a large extent this
blog is simplifying and making it more
presentable
[Music]
Sarris it's taking the info from the PDF
and making it a little bit more
presentable putting it in plain terms
and going from there so it's not bad but
it's still pretty dense just overall
okay so as we scroll down and we see
there's quite a bit of information they
talk about off-flavors so that's
interesting and they're providing you
some definitions against we're again
we're getting pretty pretty dense here
that's fine they have a few other like
good like links out so we kind of get an
idea that maybe the order in which the
BJCP presented it and that PDF is pretty
good so that's another data point next
we're gonna look at the beer scholar I'm
not super familiar with this specific
size so this is a study guide for the
cicerone exam cicerone is sort of like
the it's like a deeper wine sommelier
right so it's equivalent to that and
you're judging beer so 10 tips and we'll
take a quick look in Ginny ask are you
just taking the main points what is most
important basically and once we come
back so I'll sort of go a little faster
here and then I'll show you how we write
the outline so we're going through so
this is a Cicerone like judging beer so
they talk about being with more
experience people take sniffs so these
