hello what's going on it's Doug here and
I'm just out for a walk and hopefully
it's not too shaky here but I thought
I'd just give give a little update on
what's been going on with me I'm just
out with Georgie trusty Georgie and I
think I'm gonna try and sit down so it's
not so wobbly here all right I think I'm
gonna try and sit on that bench which is
dark
I bet it's very hot it's gonna burn me
all right
the bench isn't as hot as I thought it
was gonna be and Georgie's very smart
she actually she crawled underneath
she's in the shade underneath me here so
I have
well first off this is going to be a
meandering random potentially long I'm
not quite sure video so I'm just gonna
talk about you know the state of my mind
or whatever it is I'm doing here so
number one a couple weeks ago I think I
mentioned that I was taking a little
break from YouTube creating videos and
stuff I was like eh you know what and
then take a couple days off my parents
came to visit they you know we moved
recently to the Colorado area the
boulder colorado area and we my parents
came to visit so I was hanging out with
them and I was like you know I put out
so many videos on YouTube why don't I
take a break now the interesting thing
with YouTube people that have YouTube
channels you may know this but YouTube
is a bit of it's like a Content machine
which will chew you up because it feels
good to publish a video people watch it
you see the analytics go up and the more
you publish almost like without regard
to quality the more you publish the more
views you'll get and so on now for me
personally I don't get enough views to
make it worthwhile as a like money maker
however you know from my marketing see
the marketing standpoint of my brand
that's a project and things that I do
it's worthwhile for me to like do stuff
on YouTube but I don't make money really
directly from YouTube views or anything
like that so that's important to note if
I know some people that with much bigger
channels potentially they make money
they publish a video and they know that
the next 30 days and X amount of money
over time right so I could respect that
but for me it was kind of like what am I
doing here this is bananas I'm not
enjoying the specific work that I'm
doing creating the videos that I am in
the way that I'm doing them so that said
I was like I like I like talking to
people like interviewing folks and it
seems to be inspiring and people like it
so I you know recently published a
couple videos with a friend of mine Ron
Stefanski from the one our professor and
people really liked it
all right they liked it a lot and I
didn't conform to a lot of the sort of
standards of YouTube or anything like
that as far as like how long the content
is or how engaging it is or anything
like that I was like you know what I
think I'm just gonna Ron and I are gonna
chat and see how it goes now the cool
thing to happen it was like an hour in
15 minutes or something like that the
cool thing that happened is Ron and I
did our thing
it was content like Ron and I
potentially would enjoy consuming and
it's getting more views people are more
engaged with it people really enjoyed
watching those to the level like people
are watching like twice as much of as
far as like the amount of time the
viewer retention so anyway the point is
I realized that if I'm if I do my own
thing it may be better for me personally
number one but number two it could be
directly for the people who are like me
in the audience so instead of pandering
well I'll call it pandering pandering to
like the least common denominator to
create a video perhaps with a title like
you know how to make $500 a day
overnight or some sort of sensational
thing I'm better off just staying in my
lane and doing my thing
so that's that's one one thing that's
been on my mind I think now that I've
spent a lot
I mean I've published a lot of video so
I've spent a lot of time I understand
like things that do work better than
others I haven't had anything go viral
by the way you can't really aim for
viral so well and it's not really my
style in general so for me to try and
like aim for viral didn't make sense so
that said that is why this is just gonna
be a long video so segment two in this
conversation is going to be around doing
interesting things and doing like
projects executing projects and talking
about myself
right most posted this it's just going
to be talking about me
so I appreciate it if you're sticking in
you're hanging in there with me on this
conversation I have spent a lot of time
as you may notice if you're a fan of the
channel or you've been around in the
community for a little while I have been
spending a decent amount of time on
creating YouTube content creating
podcast content writing some on my blog
niche site project and I have been
neglecting in a lot of ways I've been
neglecting my own affiliate sites now
it's a little embarrassing you know just
to let them sit there not do anything
with them we're very minimal we're
talking like a couple hours a month
something like that generally making
them like a full-time income depending
on like how much money you need but I'm
making a full-time income from my
affiliate sites for the naysayers out
there that are like Doug you probably
make all your money from like YouTube
ads not true YouTube ads are not really
that much money generally at least for
me at the scale that I'm operating in
and then
other thing is doc you probably make it
most of your money from selling courses
in just being a charlatan and telling
people how to do things well that's not
true either I make most of my money from
my affiliate sites and it happened to
like to teach some and it's a good way
to communicate improve my communication
skills in general does it teach people
stuff so the point is I've spent a lot
of time teaching people things and I've
been neglecting my own personal
affiliate sites now the positive thing
is it's a testament it is proof it is
you know without a doubt that you can
start these sites and it is not passive
at the beginning I can tell you passive
income like you got to do a lot of work
before anything's passive but I could
tell you once you have the strong
foundation in place once you have things
in place it can be fairly hands-off I
won't use the word passive or passive
income so as to not I don't know I don't
I don't want to make any kind of crazy
claim but basically like once things are
set up like you could kind of like let
them chill out and it's gonna be better
in the long run if you come back and you
have you know quarterly audits that
you're doing on your site and like
improving content making sure products
are available all that kind of business
but you can also be lazy and not do that
much and I've been lazy on my sites I've
been doing like minimal amounts of like
updates and that sort of thing the whole
point is I'm trying because I enjoy the
work right I enjoy doing the affiliate
content I enjoy looking at the data
enjoy the keyword research the whole the
whole the whole thing right I like it so
I am getting back to those like roots of
how I got started because number one I
like to work and then the other thing is
like I can do interesting things for
example I have a few experiments in case
studies like in place right now so
and having a bunch of content to a site
for example so I'm adding like 60 posts
over a short period of time I am using
I'm gonna be using a service which I'll
hopefully be able to share with you in
the future but testing it out just
making sure it's legit I want to use it
myself I want to know that they can
deliver I want to be able to share with
you my procedures my standard operating
procedures in my templates my guides
that I'm providing to the content
service so they deliver with a minimal
number of questions or issues or
anything like that got a helicopter
flying over
[Music]
so all right so basically overall I'm
looking to do some work on my sites
using tools which I can recommend to you
because I get questions essentially
every day what content service do you
use how much does it cost what's the
quality like can you share your
templates with me and all that stuff and
I share tons of stuff and I share what I
have done in the past which is typically
just hire people directly one on one
typically from up work and if that's
your style then that's great but some
people just have trouble making that
work and I'm not sure why you know some
people I mean everyone has a different
personality and how they want to work
with folks and stuff like that so if you
don't enjoy going to up or here you feel
maybe it's like I'm not an effective way
for you to use your time I want to be
able to recommend specific services that
can do specific things which I can
confidently talk about as you know then
being able to deliver and not only that
did I get results so I don't want to say
hey use this service and who knows if it
worked out right I want to use the
service and then I want to show you hey
after I published these 60kg are post
over 60 days or so we'll say two and a
half months I started getting traffic
here check out the traffic that I am
getting on those posts by the way I'm
paying exactly this much per post and by
the way getting a thousand words or 1500
words or whatever and this is exactly
what I'm doing
I could layer that on top I'm also
running tests with guest posting
services so I was doing a little bit in
the guest posting game as far as
offering a service and then I realized I
hate doing that so again this
was a situation where people were asking
me about what services I recommend and I
was like wow I used to do it before
maybe I should do it again so many
people are asking the market is asking
for a product Doug you should try to do
something and be there
for your customers that are asking you
for it but like I said I didn't really
enjoy it
me personally services are not that fun
okay it's alright
[Music]
so that was another okay Georgie you're
a good girl I think it's scared Georgie
a little bit so anyway I'm testing a
guest posting service again directly
related to like doing work on my site so
I was trying to run the service and I
was having a number one a hard time with
a customer service I didn't frame the I
guess the service and the product and
the deliverable in a way that the
customers were happy with it the funny
thing is I had multiple customers that
wanted either a refund or they weren't
happy with the service in some capacity
however their rankings went up in Google
and they were getting more traffic so I
don't know what the they want
but services as far as me running a
service that might think not my thing so
I want to be able again to recommend a
service that I personally use I want to
be able to tell people I did this this
is the exact package that I got I sent
one guest post with this criteria to one
of my keyword golden ratio posts for
example and here's what happened and
here's how long it took if you want to
do the same thing you could check it out
or you could recreate it on your own
right I'm gonna say you have to use
services that I'm using but again you
know if I got if I got you know two
three emails a week where people are
asking me what I'm using well I need to
tell them what what they can use and
like I said I felt pressure to you know
create a product create a service that
people can use obviously the the money
that I could make is good but at the
same time like to set up a service to
run effectively I ended up in the same
position that I was a couple years ago
when I tried to do a guest posting
service been to and that was if this is
going to work out if this is successful
I need to have a team of people working
for me which is a terrible I've grown
teams
I've hired a lot of people I could hire
exactly who I needed but at the same
time I was like wow you know what I
don't know if I want to sign up for that
I don't know if I want to have you know
15 20 people working for me it's
freelancers and having to just be the
you know manager on top of that yeah I
could hire managers to do things in the
middle but once you once you map that
out you created the org chart that I
used to be a part of in my corporate job
which I don't do anymore am kind of
happy so I'd like a lean team I like a
small team I don't like a lot of moving
parts it's just simpler it's just
simpler overall and one of the ways it
can be simpler for for me and for you if
you want to hire you know services is to
just outsource like discrete pieces of
like work by backlinks whatever by guest
posts we'll put it that way that you
could trust so that is the other aspect
I'm trying to do interesting work on my
sites that I could share as case studies
I have lots of data I have a lot of case
studies some of it isn't relevant to a
lot of the things that I talk about on
the channel but there's no reason I
can't do more of that work and then
share with you so let's keep walking
here I'm at I'm gonna get sunburned I
mean I got sunscreen on but I need to
move I need to move out here all right I
move locations and in the shade now on
another bench it's not bad I like this
hopefully the I'm in a parking lot so if
we the noise isn't too bad so here one
one key thing when distinction I need to
make is like with the issues that I had
with the service that I was offering the
guest posting service it is not the
customers fault everything is is my
fault right and I think it's a mindset
thing like I cannot blame anyone right I
can't I shouldn't blame anyone it is all
my doing
like overall and I think it's important
for other people to remember you know we
sometimes can be tempted to blame others
even if it could be valid right even if
it could be valid but ultimately it
comes in to me not ensuring that my
sales material was giving the right
information to the customers making sure
that their expectations were sent
properly it is not the customers fall is
my fault yes there are some bad
customers sometimes but generally it was
just failings by me my it was my fault
basically it's what I'm trying to say so
I just wanted to make that clear and
just explicitly say any issues that I
had with the guest posting service my
fault any issues that the customers had
my fault right can't blame anyone else
it is important to frame your product
properly it's important to make sure
that the customers understand like what
they're getting and when and why it's
valuable and if they do not understand
it is my fault
a hundred percent so moving on from that
I will mention that Georgie is sitting
under me still and I'm just there's
people walking by so I'm just making
sure she's gonna be a good dog she's a
good dog so all this all this kind of
ties together alright so I an
interesting thing happens when you work
for yourself particularly when you work
online and not only do you not have a
boss but you're sort of you're the
visionary which now that I say it out
loud I'm like no wonder I have some
trouble sometimes because I'm not very
visionary like
I'm not a visionary something like that
so anyway the point is I'm probably
working worn out taking fewer days off
and have been taking fewer days off
since I got laid off when you work for
someone else
number one you can blame other people
for stuff because sometimes it is you
know the managers fault for
things up or whatever so when you work
for someone else you got vacation days
you got benefits if I'm sick I could
just say hey someone else do you do that
you be my backup and fill-in and stuff
like that while the birds out here are
very energetic so the point is I am
doing more work taking less days off and
stuff like that
now that I'm working for myself now the
well you know one caveat is I work
shorter days right so I'm working more
days but I work sorter days when I'm
actually working get a lot done but the
whole point here that I'm trying to make
is I'm planning on taking a lot of time
off this summer and part of it is
outsourcing so I want to take time off
remove myself from the day-to-day
decision-making I want to maybe check my
email a couple times a week and have all
this stuff in place while hopefully
growing my business now it's not a long
term it's not a long term solution right
you can't just check out leave and
expect your business to grow like
ongoing forever but if I'm like taking
four to six weeks off where I am maybe
work in a couple hours a week if I do a
shitload of work ahead of time for say
six weeks to eight weeks I'm doing a lot
of work setting things up
outsourcing getting things in place
setting up contingencies
if a services company has a question
they have a person that they can ask
that is not me that potentially can make
the decision for me now I'm sure some
people are thinking how could you trust
someone to make the decision for you
could that cost you money could it be
terrible it might bright it might cost
me a little money but if you let go of
control then it gives you freedom to do
other things whether your time and what
I don't want to be like the the cog
dislike slowing everything down which is
generally what happens as soon as I
started outsourcing more stuff and
getting out of the decision-making
process and then empowering my team to
make the decisions for me
you're number one you find that
sometimes the consequence of making a
sub optimal decision isn't that big so
let's say I want to you know make the
decision so it could be 90% certain of
like a good decision what if I can have
someone else make the decision that is
you know probably 75 percent likelihood
that it's going to be correct or
whatever and maybe there's a small
downside but to get out of that
decision-making process you know number
one you can accelerate and do a lot more
in the shorter time but from a like
mental standpoint of like all the
decisions that I would potentially have
to make I mean it's a no-brainer to get
out of the loop on that so I am and I
haven't done this sort of thing I've
taken some time off here and there I
have taken you know a week off but I've
always had my laptop with me so that if
something happened that I could do
something with it now I'll let you in on
a little secret I actually just ordered
a Chromebook which I'll probably do a
little review on I'm excited I like
technology and side tangent here I like
technology I like getting new products
and stuff like that I am using currently
I think it's a 2015 Mac
book pro and I was I've had it for three
four years something like that I get him
refurbished but it's doing a good job
I sort of up SPECT it and got additional
memory and stuff like that so it's
working well but at the same time I was
like hey you know what this laptop is a
few years old
maybe I should upgrade what I found was
I have one of the sort of you know the
last great MacBook I just made that
claim but it has USB 3 has a Thunderbolt
tool to slash display mini port output
so it it has like the things that I need
in there and it runs for fast enough for
me now
the reason why I mentioned the
Chromebook is I was like well I can get
I got a couple gift certificates for my
birthday thank you
my in-laws and my some of my family
members sent me some gift cards so I was
like you know what I've never checked
out a Chromebook I use Google products a
lot and what if I got a very small
laptop that I could gonna take to coffee
shops or whatever and take on my on a
trip I'm probably taking the trip while
I'm taking some time off the point being
it's not a full-fledged laptop like I
couldn't do video editing on there
there's a lot of apps that I use
day-to-day that wouldn't be able to do
anything with my understanding I've
never had a Chromebook by the way I'm a
big Apple person not because I want to
be but I just kind of got roped in
overtime and I found that
I lost my train of thought but basically
I was gonna say that I think that the
Chromebook could be a you know fine way
for me to be able to write if for some
reason if the unfortunate happened and I
had a site crash if I had some sort of
catastrophic issue I should be able to
hop on the Chromebook get two websites
to help me manage and mitigate that sort
of and be able to take care of it
on a trip and one of the great parts is
over there so anyway the point is I I
believe that the Chromebook should be
good enough for me to like do some small
things if I need to and it'll be lighter
so the the MacBook is like a 15 inch 15
somethin inch and the Chromebook is not
going to be comfortable to work on very
much for long periods of time it's like
an eleven point four inch screen but it
is very light has good battery life and
generally it should be operational so I
think when I sat down here I was talking
about taking time off so it all ties
together I'm trying to outsource more
stuff I'm trying to do work on my
affiliate sites and I want to share
those stories with you I also want to
take that time off and utilize the
outsourcing capabilities that I have
with services that I you know
and using effectively and grow the
business at the same time so it's a tall
order but I think it can work really
well so I think I'm gonna gonna close it
out here do some more walk in here with
Georgie and let me know if you'd like
these sort of casual I'm not sure if
this is vlog e exactly because it's just
like the ramblings of a crazy person
talking to themselves which is what I
tend to do from time to time but yeah
let me know if you like these if you
have any questions about this stuff that
I was talking about leave comments that
will be helpful for me to make new
videos and I gotta say I actually I have
wanted to do more videos out here just
walking with Georgie but it's windy all
the time
it's like insanely Wendy it seems to
have calmed down a little bit as it's
heated up and we're getting into like
late spring not quite summer yet but
it's like it's beautiful out often
[Music]
it's beautiful out here a lot at a time
but the thing is it's just been so windy
but and it's also slightly I got to get
used to just carrying like the camera
around and like sorry about that
carrying the camera around building up
these biceps and shoulders here and then
just having like random people walk by
keep doing my thing
I mean basically no one really gives a
about like other folks out here but
I've gotten probably a dozen looks just
people who are like looking at me like
why why do I have a camera why am i
carrying around a tripod and all that
stuff
but you know what I didn't even pay much
attention I guess I know you know for me
knowing that a handful of people were
gonna watch it is enough and I'm like
well you know I'm doing it cuz people
want to hear the ramblings of a madman
so alright I got in this thing so leave
a comment let me know what you think
I'll tighten these up in future most
likely or maybe I'll make them longer
cuz I think you know if you're hanging
on this law
you're watching it cuz you want to so
anyway
everyone have a great day we'll catch
you next time
