I'm at Studio West here in San Diego, California,

recording my new audiobook for Superfans.

I wanna give you a little behind the scenes

of where I'm going, why,

and kinda who else I'm working with.

And so here we are in the studio,

and that's Colin right there.

- Welcome back, good to see you again.

- Yeah, you too.

So you've got the gear going here.

I'll be in that studio back there,

trying to be professional

'cause sometimes I get a little weird.

All right so Colin,

for anybody who doesn't have access to a studio like this,

but wants to record their own audio book,

any tips for people who want to do it at home

with their own stuff?

- Yeah, I mean it's gotten a lot easier to do things

at your own place.

Mics are pretty accessible, you can get USB mics now,

you don't even need the XLR's.

You can get just a little shield, right,

to kinda of keep the sound in and tight.

So, some stuff you can get at Guitar Center,

anything on Amazon.

It's fairly easy to do like a basic recording.

But nothing quite beats professional rooms like this.

- And Colin's really helpful too,

'cause he catches a lot of mistakes

that I make while reading.

And actually I'm gonna show you where I'm gonna be reading.

So there it is, here.

So we got the iPad,

and we have a little mic set up here.

And plenty of water, you need lots of water.

You'll see a little bit of behind the scenes,

and I'll catch up with you on the other side.

After the laughter died down,

Gene leaned toward me and said,

'Pat, here's why we've been able to stay together

for so long.

It's because in addition to the morning coffee

we have together each day,

and the goodnight kiss each night before bed,

our days are filled

with random acts of kindness towards each other.

All right, finished day one.

We got 108 pages in and I'm going home

and I'm done for the day.

Gotta rest the voice, but still feelin' really good.

And a lot of that vocal training I've been doing,

a lot of the podcasting I've been doing,

has been definitely really helpful.

'Cause I remember the first time I did this,

I mean, I was done after day one.

And I couldn't even get it going the next day,

I had to rest a couple times.

So, we're good, yeah, let's come back tomorrow.

All right we're back in the studio today,

here at Studio West.

We got Colin over there, how'd we do yesterday?

- You did pretty well, good pace,

ready to finish it up today.

- Cool, all right so we're gonna go back in

and just dive right in.

We're at Chapter 10 right now,

and I already got that set up here.

And we're gonna get going so wish us luck.

This is why when you're a brand,

All right now you might be wondering

why I would come in to record

at a professional studio like this,

when I have professional recording equipment at home.

I could hypothetically record my own audio book

at home no problem,

however there's a few key benefits

of going to a space like Studio West here

in order to record your audio book.

The first one is,

especially if you're gonna be putting your book

on something like Audible,

there's some very specific things that you have to do

when creating your audio book for that platform.

For example, at the very beginning you have to say,

this is Superfans by Pat Flynn,

narrated by Pat Flynn.

And at the end of the book you have to do the same thing

but also include published by Get Smart Books

or whatever the case is for you.

Beginning of every chapter you have to say the chapter

and the chapter title,

take a little break and then move onto to it.

So there's some rhythm and cadence

that you need to know for Audible.

And having somebody like Colin come in

to just guide you with those kinds of things is really key.

Number two, obviously when you're recording a book,

there's a lot of things that need to happen

from an audio engineering point of view.

From your levels and volume and cadence

and those kinds of things.

And if you are going into read a book for a day or two,

you kinda just wanna be focused on that,

and have all your energy sorta focused on that.

Not get distracted by little things here and there,

with your audio and your sound engineering.

So I come in so I can just literally walk in

and record and go.

And thirdly and this is the one

that was most surprising to me when I first came

into the studio to record Will it Fly back in 2016,

actually it was the end of 2015, but anyway,

was that I didn't know how many mistakes I was going to make

reading my own book.

There were so many times that Colin caught me,

especially with my first go round.

I mean, hundreds and hundreds of mistakes.

Sentences that were read incorrectly,

grammatical errors,

just words that were flustered, things like that.

Also it's really helpful especially if I don't know

how to pronounce something,

which I don't always know how to do.

Especially for certain names and things like that.

Mispronunciations and just that kind of level of help

with something like an audio book,

which a person is gonna listen to for hours, is key.

So if you ever have the opportunity,

find a local recording studio who has ACX

or Audible experience to help you record your audiobook

and it can be sold alongside with your book on Amazon.
