look at a little bit of affiliate
marketing topics today we're gonna talk
about them we're not gonna look at at
that I guess and I'm gonna tell you a
little bit about some tear downs that
I've done this week with the best roof
box we're also going to look at writing
content I'm gonna do a little live demo
here I realize that is one of the most
popular topics that I do see come across
email questions in general and we're
just gonna ramble on I wanna answer a
few questions of course let me know in
the chat just say hello let me know

here today hope everyone's doing well
here in the Colorado area things are
relatively shut down so stay wide bars
in the dining room of restaurants are
shut down currently it is March 20th
2020 today and it's a little cool a
little snowy out there today it's
supposed to warm up soon though how is
it where everyone else is at I've been
chatting with a couple people across the
country across the world and yeah
everyone's in a sort of a different
state of like lockdown or panic oh and
TIFF is in Vegas so yeah I see a lot of
casinos and everything shut down there
and it's super weird in general but my
day-to-day is relatively the same other
than my wife is working from home as
well but I'm still going and walking
outside it was raining yesterday
walk the dog outside snowing and icy out
there same deal walk into a couple I
haven't been going into stores as often
but I walked through the hardware store
usually don't touch any
but just like walked through I'm not
like standing in anyone's face or
anything like that but yet largely the
same kind of activities which is really
strange because I know a lot of people
are trying to shift to working from home
maybe they haven't done it before just
you know a few things that I've been
doing for years
even before I wasn't working for myself
I worked from home and worked remotely
and had to figure out how to like
operate without getting distracted so
anyway so today like I said we're gonna
talk about a couple things best roof box
teardown so if you are new to the
channel like some folks are then then
every once in a while and those are
really it's not a teardown it's not
negative it does sound negative but
generally I review a site I give some
opinions that I have and talk about good
things and bad things some observations
as well so one of my friends Alex Cooper
over at WP Eagle he has a public case
study going it's called best roof box
and back I think over last summer - in
2019 I did a short audit and teardown of
the site it was fine I think this site
has grown it's earning a few hundred
dollars per month the valuation is about
$37,000 roughly at this point in time so
I did a series of videos I think there
are six total plus an interview with
Alex where we talk about this site in
general and I think I think there's a
huge amount of value and in fact as I
look at you know what people sell for
courses and I look at the material that
I put out I'm like I could sell all this
stuff so it's highly valuable I showed
demos I show you how I often will
approach auditing a site so check out
the playlist check out the
videos I think there's a little over
there there must be about 90 minutes or
so of content so it's kind of like a
master class again people would charge
for for that material and put it behind
a paywall
but I'm just putting it out there so

that I'm just publishing them and
republish 'uncle 25 percent of the
people that are interested in the videos
or even exposed to it so I tend to
republish things
alright BBC is asking about a traffic
drop after
Kovan 19 has hit and it's so funny I've
been getting a lot more calls here
recently
like spam type calls and I think some
jackass just tried to call me on skype
so I'm gonna block that person it's kind
of funny I guess I'm somewhat
approachable I don't want people to
contact me and talk to me and stuff I
don't want a random person calling me on
skype that I don't know seems real weird
to me alright moving on to be beast
question here and I'm not gonna spend
too much time at least I don't plan on
it talking about
coronavirus kovat 19 anything like that
I have a few sides traffic is up I have
a couple sites traffic is down
certainly it's dependent on the specific
topic matter of those sites all right

Paul says you have about a 40% traffic
drop but conversions have increased huh
doubled so if I'm doing the math right
you should be actually okay and moving
on moving through Oh Paul says you're
worried if Amazon pauses their affiliate
program like others have done hi
yeah I don't know if that's gonna happen
but I would I mean I didn't see you know
a lot of people were gonna be
potentially laid off especially I like
the hospitality industry with a lot of
restaurants closing for dining service
and I did see that Amazon was planning
on hiring more people I'm not sure what
timeframe but it was something like a
hundred thousand people to account for
the additional orders that are happening
online so Paul I don't know I don't know
where you're getting your info if you're
just speculating but potentially you're
just speculating okay so what we're
gonna do is take a look at writing some
content and I'm just gonna kind of make
up some make up some topics for us to go
through just so we can get an ID
about how to write content again I know
it's a very popular topic in general
people especially if you haven't
published anything online before you may
be thinking I don't know what to do I
don't know how to publish content I
don't know what to include I don't know
how to write it how do I write a product
review if I've never seen the product I
don't understand so with that said I
just want to give you one little piece
of information is super important just
because you don't have the item right
doesn't mean you can't add value and
help a person make a decision so if you
well let's just look back at it at a
time when I had to order something so I
needed to get an external hard drive so
went over to Amazon and I googled met
googled but I went to Amazon I searched
for external hard drive there were like
twelve thousand results or one hundred
and twenty thousand it was like an
unusable number of results some of more
older models some of them weren't what I
was looking for at all and I needed like
a curated list of like three or maybe
five different external hard drives that
were viable for me personally I was I
actually needed to have a hard drive
that was durable and needed to be sort
of shock resistant or you know I was
gonna put in my backpack and go on a
long road trip so I needed it to be
pretty robust and be able to have you
know be in a backpack while traveling
and work for me so I just needed a
shorter list I did not need a list of
like 100,000 different hard drives so
the value that you can bring even if you
don't have the product is aggregating
the data and basically providing value
by curating a list a smaller list so
that if I was looking for the best hard
drive for traveling then maybe I could
pick from three and it would be much
easier for me to do so that is how you
can provide value I know a lot of people
are like I don't understand it seems
actually I got a question yesterday I
did an interview and it's going live
tomorrow so it'll be over on Amelia
Gardner's channel but she was like hey
isn't it you know is it unethical to
write reviews without loaning the
product and I don't think so I I mean I
don't think she was proposing that I was
unethical or anything like that but
what's a a new iPhone comes out right
and I think maybe Apple did made some
announcements the other day a new
product is coming out right a new iPad
is gonna be hitting hitting the shelves
but no one has it yet yet
there are reviews online right now there
may not be many reviews but think about
the last time an iPhone came out
you see people but without the device
they've never touched it they're only
talking about this specs so the value
you could bring is you know putting the
specs on there giving your commentary on
it and that is valuable so keep that in
mind so what we're gonna do hopefully
this will work for us there's all these
little windows everywhere and do me a
favor folks if you have some questions
feel free to ask I will be coming

right away you know you don't need to
keep typing it in you just make sure
that make sure that when I am going
through the questions that I see it but
you don't have to like keep typing it in
I have a low tolerance for spamming in

overall all right so I'm gonna try to
share my screen and then we'll probably
go through that best hard drive example
and actually I'm gonna get something

best external hard drive yep so I'm just

they're just way too many little windows
popping up okay I think we're we're
gonna be in business here oh boy let me
just make sure everything's set to go
all right cool perfect that's pretty
good that's pretty good there all right
so you guys could see my window here
boom just like that so what we have here
is I googled best external hard drive to
fit in with my little example here what
we're gonna go through is just creating
an outline to write the content so a lot
of people get lost and they think hey
I'm gonna write this article on best
external hard drive and then they head
over to WordPress they have a blinking
cursor in a blank page and people just
don't know where to begin
it's confusing and it's very
intimidating to have just a blank page
and you don't know where to start then
you're thinking hey I need to write like
two thousand words it's pretty tough so
the best approach is to just write an
outline you write an outline out and
then you can fill it in maybe you take a
couple passes at it maybe the first time
you just write the outline maybe it may
only take you a few minutes to do an
outline and then after that maybe you
come back a couple of hours later maybe
you need to take a break
maybe you can only work out at fifteen
minutes at a time each day that's fine
so you can come back in for each one of
the bullet points in the outline you can
write one sentence and then come back
and write a couple more or you can take
it a section at a time but the point is
you could you can sort of treat it as a
modular situation where you can hop in
do a discrete amount of work right there
and then move on
if you if you just have that blank page
it's really hard to get moving there all
right
so what I did a great way to do research
is to just google the term that you're
going for and pull out some of the top
results and this is kind of a poor
example I wouldn't recommend generally
that people aim for a tech niche like
this you have to update the content all
the time some people love that right if
you're into technical products if you're
into that area then great if you want to
review I guess like cameras right DSLRs
new ones come out all the time you got
to keep up with it it's not as evergreen
but the good part is there's always new
products coming out so that's a pro but
anyway get this high tech so I'm just
gonna open up a couple a couple of these
here so this is a like TechRadar we'll
just see what pops up I'm gonna try and
find like something more like a niche
site versus these big sites out there I
may have to dial it in a little bit
closer to a specific item because these
are all like big sites all right we'll
just look at a couple here to get an
idea and then I just have this blank
Google Doc over here so we're gonna be
looking at best external hard drives and
let's see what they have here for
techradar.com so the hand picket they
have a list and okay so in this case we
see they're really giving like a
one-sentence summary so they're leaning
on their domain authority and their
overall strength as a domain so not a
lot of great data here other than these
products so that from a you know
research standpoint we will just copy
this over put a pin in it and understand
that it may not be the best content but
at least it has a list
of probably pretty good hard drives
we'll go over to life wire which may
have a better buying guide section okay
so this is great it gives us the rundown
for different applications of the hard
drive so best reportability that's what
I was looking for best for gaming best
for business
so there's a lot of different ways to
classify a lot of different user types
out there so as we scroll down we may
hopefully see a little bit more of a
buying guide type section they do have
pros and cons so that's good to note and
they have like a full review for some of
the specific products I don't think they
have a full buying guide here but I'm
just gonna scroll down oh and if anyone
cares this is the kind of hard drive
that I ended up with a LaCie rugged it's
extremely durable they say you could
drive a car over it or something like
that a drop resistance up to five feet
it can stand a one-ton car which is it's
kind of small I couldn't run over it
with my truck it's water resistant dust
resistant blah blah blah yeah so pretty
robust and that's the one I ended up
getting it seems to be very very popular
ones holy cow these are huge now 10
terabytes good lord
those are giant okay scrolling down okay
they have a buying guide here to this
they they give you the list of products
first and then they have the buying
guide here it's up for debate whether
you would want to put the products first
which would get you more affiliate
clicks but if you put the buying guide
first you get a little bit more trust
and people know what they're looking for
so I have some theories about it beyond
the scope of what we're talking about
today so a couple things to note so
there's a little bit of an intro here
and then we have storage size so let's
go ahead and start our outline here it's
very hard to type what people are
watching so you know hopefully everyone
can be patient with me
and I'm just gonna call that heading to
and we're just gonna start the outline I
just keep keep it straight straight up
here and normal so storage size so is
one of the big things but we'll put in
trial we know we need a little bit of an
intro first and then storage size is
very important types of external hard
drives so they have a more traditional
disk style and then they have
solid-state so we'll call it a types of
hard drives and we can be specific so
solid state versus I think they called
it an HDD is that what they call it
HDD okay hard disk drive this is the
more traditional ones
it's been around really fast next we
have performance so this is I mean just
really basic hit the hit the headlines
here and the thing that you'll notice is
you're going through is when you look at
a few of these you'll see sort of the
same topics sometimes topics are missed
on one side and they're included on
another and if you kind of pick the all
of them and put them on yours you end up
with a little bit better content overall
because it's more thorough so here the
performance goes to transfer speed and
read/write speeds so we'll note that so
we've got transfer read/write we'll just
put readwrite like that what else do we
have here
that read/write that we have to consider
and other features and considerations
okay so we'll call it other features but
we don't have to organize it exactly
like this but the thing is as we're
creating the outline it doesn't have to
be exactly right
right now this is a work in progress let
me make this bigger so
everyone can read it a little bit more
easily so other features could be I
think was a network something
yeah network connectivity ports I think
well there's a couple of reports first
then we'll call it network all right so
we could change things later and I have
an idea already here but let's keep
looking and see if there's any other so
format and physical size all right what
else do we have here security buffer
price those are different parts and
price so at this point I would actually
I maybe would put a couple of these into
their own section
so I think maybe like security yeah in
my opinion I would probably put security
is a fairly important item Jeremy what's
going on we have a mod also see TIFF has
a question as well so I'll hop over
there in a second but we're doing a demo
right now on how to write content just
creating an outline I was chatting with
someone during coaching call this past
week and they really struggled with how
to write content they had plenty of time
to spend each week something like 20
hours per week and they they really
struggle to even publish one article per
week I write extremely slowly and if I
if I spend four hours in a morning I can
write 1,500 to 2,000 words like ready to
publish where I like make a pass the
first cut the first draft go back edit
it and that's pretty much ready to go so
and I don't even write that fast so keep
that in mind and I was like well how are
you approaching that doing the content
and it was very scat I'll say scattered
best mic what's happening man good to
have you on so you'll see here I'm just
reorganizing things cuz I'm like oh
these these could stand alone security
can go up their physical size that could
be important and I would actually put
the price as its own as well so here
right away we see we have a couple
couple points things that you need to
understand when you're purchasing an
external hard drive and here's the thing
I did zero research ahead of time I
literally just googled it and looked at
one of these results and if you go
through and you look at two or three
more you'll end up with a lot more
information that you could put right
here into the outline again the outline
is not a this is not the final outline
this is one that I put together in about
five minutes while I was talking to in a
live stream and I didn't do ahead
of time so it's really that
straightforward it doesn't have to be
perfect you can do this in a sloppy way
and by the way right what I like to do
is I'll put together a list of topics
right get your notepad write down a list
of topics right
maybe it's the keyword research that
you've already done and then I will do
an outline for ten articles in like an
hour
I really like the time box the the
workflow like that and you end up with
it may be a little sloppy but you get a
lot done because your brain is just like
okay we were brainstorming we're coming
up with ideas right now we're doing a
little light research and by the way the
other thing you could do is make sure
you a copy and paste the resources
you're using you can link to them later
it's good to do that but also let's say
I'm going to hire some writers to do
this and I could say hey here's the four
places that you can use as a reference
I've already done it for you
so the writer doesn't have to be
concerned with going out there and
trying to figure out what you want in
the article you're telling them here's
the three or four reference sites the
reference pages use those use those okay
so Jen says this you have trouble
writing content because you were told by
many gurus they do or don't when it
comes to content I don't know if I
should write 2,000 or 1000 words or
where to put the SEO it's the first that
you're learning about this
so my recommendation number one is to
just pick like one person for the time
being pick one person that you think you
could trust it looks like they get
results it's really important not just
that they get results but there are
students or the things that they are
teaching get results because I know a
lot of people they're great teachers and
they may be able to do really great work
and they may be super successful but
they can't teach other people how to do
it which I mean who cares if I can do
certain things right it's really
important if I can teach other people to
do it so the thing is Jen pick one one
person to follow but most of the time
people don't like to be called gurus by
the way I'm just quick note so if you
were to follow me for example then you
can just follow along as you're working
on a plan to for example launch a site
and just follow through with what I'm
teaching the problem is when you mix and
match from many different teachers or an
influencers or anything like that
then you can mix and match things but
you may not have the skills yet or the
understanding to know what to mix and
match there's a chance you put together
a terrible combination of tools and
practices and you end up just putting
together something terrible just because
you don't know what to spend
so my answer is you know you don't know
if you should write 1000 or 2000 words
you know really it doesn't matter that
much generally you know if you aim for
the middle of that there's probably
gonna be a pretty good starting point
but it depends on the topic so if this

tutorial situations like this where you
could see me like literally work on
something live I'll probably do some
videos on it but it's cool to work on
things live because then people will ask
questions about the specific topic that
we're getting into now I'm gonna play
some clips in a minute I'm gonna look at

them which is totally relevant I

in says oh do you show the buying guide
or the review first the buying guide or
the affiliate links first this is up to
you I've seen it done both ways just in
general so if you put the the list of
items first then people may not know all
the features that they should look at if
you put the buying guide first then
maybe they have to scroll down half the
article before they actually get to the
affiliate links so what I like to do is
to put the buying guide first and then
the the links below the mini guide the
mini reviews first but I also like to
put a call to action or a couple calls
to action early in the article so keep
that in mind
you shouldn't bury your affiliate links
all the way at the bottom
mohit asked do I still write content for
my web sites alright no basically no I
write it for a niche site project for
certain most of the articles over there
a niche site project but I imagine
you're talking about my affiliate sites
and I do not write the content there
anymore I did a interview very popular
interview with Matt Jeff and me see a
few weeks ago and he's a very smart dude
first of all
and this is a quick clip and I encourage
you to check out the full interview
people loved it people watched a lot of
it I got many emails on it so this is
just Matt talking about making some
money and sort of his progression over
time so I'm going to get that roll in
here
yeah it's an affiliate link manager it's
kind of like you're familiar with pretty
links or AWP or ez Azon or EMA links Pro
Emily bro
yep it's all of those combined it's like
we do Amazon will be an Amazon like
integration but we also do custom links
and it allows you to there's a couple
things it does that's really interesting
for affiliate marketers and one of those
things is I think pretty links does this
as well but if you have like let's say
you add an affiliate link your website
but then you have to go and add that
link to all your posts right so what we
do is we actually create an inventory of
all your existing links and we say hey
you know you're linking to let's say if
I have an affiliate program with
convertkit or something with that and
I've linked to convertkit in the past
well now laso knows that those two
things are the same and so you click a
top toggle and it'll actually turn that
link into your affiliate link okay and
it also does keywords so you could say
hey every time I mention the word
convertkit on my site go find all those
mentions and and let me flip the switch
to make those links if I want to it also
does display boxes so if you want to add
a like a box in the middle of your
content that's like here's my affiliate
link here's an image you know ratings
description button all that stuff you
can do tables you can do a grid of
products you can do a list of products
you can do a single product and it's
basically just like a giant affiliate
link manager that you know will check if
you have broken links checks of products
are out of stock it checks if you have
opportunities to link more things and it
helps you find opportunities in because
it has reports in there that say like oh
here are all the domains that you linked
to did you know that this domain has an
affiliate program sign up for that and
then you flick it switch and all those
links that you link to are now part of
the affiliate program so it does a lot a
lot of stuff with that cool it's kind of
a big yeah and as far as results I know
that you started using some of the
functionality on some of your sites yeah
how much did revenue go up just so
people know this like god a serious
thing yeah so I built a really basic
version
on sim University back in 2014 it was
like completely custom code it wasn't
even a plug-in it was just like in the
functions that PHP and if the main the
main goal of that was to just connect to
the Amazon API and display like great
display boxes so taking the link out of
the cut like you know you don't just
want to link you want to say like I
recommend this product and it costed
this much money and just being
transparent like that and having that
sort of like before you click here's all
the information and why when I actually
started putting that my website that's
when I got to quit my job like literally
like a few months after that like that
summer was like oh I'm making like I
went for my 40 grand - a hundred grand
oh yeah 40 grand a year - a hundred
grand yeah I was right 40 grand here -
100 grand a year that year ok so I was
like able to go okay I don't have to do
website design anymore not to do
freelancing work I can I could focus on
this full-time sweet okay and like I
said well yeah we can we could talk
about all the details in the future part
of the research for this interview I was
listening to the niche pursuits podcast
I think that was recorded roughly in
August September of 29 yes at that point
in time I think you were making like
thirteen to fifteen hundred dollars
monthly recurring revenue and so on
blasts oh yeah yep yeah so and then
because you were doing a case study a
challenge to make fifteen thousand per
month within six months months which I
don't think you reach but where you at
now right we're still the same yeah 15
on earth okay yeah I think we just
looked because I was doing and we're
writing I'm writing an article right now
on money lab about we did this entire
like redesign and it was like we hit the
15,000 mm our goal if you move the comma
one one place to the left what's good
about that though is you know in August
when we were really actively promoting
it we got to 1500 and it's been six or
seven months since then we're still at
1500 so the customers stayed like our
churn rate is low and that's that that's
a good sign
cool um and I think once they get the
new version of lasso which comes out in
a couple weeks they're gonna I mean
they're I mean Y using all my say it's
just like it's everything I've ever
wanted
in affiliate plugin so cool
alright that was Matt gvc from money lab

even bigger podcast
listen money matters so definitely check
those out and I encourage you to look at

publishing clips out there just in
general so I encourage you to pop over

section and you'll see like much shorter
clips because basically I'm doing like
very long form interviews cuz that's
what I like to do and I'm publishing
them on the podcast which people like on
YouTube people will struggle with the
longer videos and I appreciate that I
mean this rare when I'm gonna sit down
and watch a super long very long video
occasionally I do if I happen to be like
working out at the gym which is not open
here anymore but if I'm at the gym and
I'm like alright I'm gonna jog for an
hour do like a long workout then maybe I
could I could put something on this
pretty long but generally I may end up
you know checking out the clips you know
the clips are out there for people that
just want me to check out the short ones
so do check it out there's a lot of good
stuff and I get many compliments on that
Paul says Matt has good content too and
yeah fantastic fantastic stuff so let's
see what else did I have on the agenda
for today I've got a couple more Clips
oh I do need to mention that this
livestream is brought to you in part by
ease o ik YZ o ik is a sort of a full
stream or a full stack kind of provider
and they have a lot of tools for content
publishers in general so I thought they
were just purely like a display ads
company but it's a little bit deeper
than that and in fact some of the huge
value that you can get from the display
ad aspect is they have machine learning
they have AI that actually goes a little
bit deeper than just hey you want to put
an ad here
sighs you want to put another ad here of
this size because the thing is if you
place multiple ads onto a page you don't
know how it's going to perform if one ad
maybe earns you you know a dollar per
day and another ad earns you a dollar
per day on separate sort of pages if you
put them together it doesn't mean you're
gonna earn two dollars per day on that
one page keep that in mind so it may
actually be more valuable to in fact it
could actually be less than just having
one on there so instead of making two
dollars per day you may make 80 cents
per day so there's a lot of factors
involved and it may be that if you don't
have as many ads showing on your you're
on the first view that someone lands on
your page if you have fewer ads they may
look at more pages on your site right so
it's a couple layers deep and if you
just place ads on your site you may not
be taking advantage of that so the thing
that I really like that I've been
testing and using is the site speed
accelerator there's a video out there
where I took a site from like the high
20s on the Google psi that's Page Speed
insights core so it was like the high
20s and took it to the high 90s like 98
99 just with a few clicks of a button so
things like - ease oh it definitely
check it out I saw someone asked about
easy look versus other companies they
were a partial sponsor of this live
stream so keep that in mind I haven't
used media vine but when I've seen media
vine it slows down my site so that's
what I've seen
Pranav says or / Nev / nave you use
easily on your site and it generates
more revenue than Adsense so very cool

things we're gonna and we're gonna do
today let me see if this is gonna work
for us here let me give it a quick shot
so I've been looking at a lot more like
news reports know typically I honest I
don't read news online I don't watch the
news occasionally I'll check in on the
weather you just love checking in on the
weather but as like The Weather Channel
and other news stations covering the
weather became more sensational I kind
of lost interest
I mean basically The Weather Channel is
is like half clickbait you know this
tornado is gonna hit you you won't
believe what happens next a storm hit
this town and you won't believe what the
doctors were doing or I don't know it's
just it's all a little too much for me
but I have been reading the news way
more multiple times a day with the
coronavirus and stuff going on so I have
been seeing more ads and I was like what
are these ads some of these are just
