Facebook Advertising Vs. Building An Authority Site - Which Is Best For You? & Live Q&A


hello hello welcome welcome this is
miles I'm coming live today it's Sunday
the 14th here on the west coast of the
United States it's 10:01
a.m. and I'm using a new kind of
software that's going to allow me to
have a few extra features in this live
stream so Before we jump into it I'm
going to give you a quick minute to get
settled and I'm also going to jump in
and make sure that this is working
correctly because I do want to test this
new let's see here want to test this new
system that I'm working on here and one
moment I hope you're doing well today
excited to talk about Facebook
pay-per-click and I'm also excited to
talk about building an authority site
I've actually kind of done both which is
very interesting so I'm excited to share
my take on both because not many people
go down both paths excuse me and I'm
just logging onto the stream if you can
see me on the stream I would totally

appreciate just a little heads up that

just clear out a couple of windows and
we'll jump right in here so I do
appreciate your time and that looks good
perfect awesome thank you guys very much
I'm so excited to be here today I'm so
excited to get to share this time with
you there's nothing being sold in this
at all I'm literally just kind of
marking out some time from my day here
to to give of my thoughts my ideas we're
gonna start by talking about the kind of
differences between Facebook
pay-per-click and what I call building
an authority site which is really
leveraging content marketing and getting
your traffic from Google some people
call this free traffic but I think
that's kind of a misnomer because it
takes a lot of life energy time and
energy to create you could do it without
much money invested that's true but it
does take time and energy which is not
free because time is the ultimate
resource so a little bit about my story
and ultimately the goal here is to help
you understand which one is best and
most in alignment with you your goals
your business your needs etc and where
you're at in your kind of specific place
in life that's where the QA comes in
afterwards and ultimately I just want to
help you to confidently move forward
because that is something that came up
in the survey that I put out as a lot of
people they don't know where to start
they're kind of over here for a minute
they're over there for a minute they're
trying this try and not trying this and
to get a real business working online it
doing one thing consistently for an
extended period of time is required I
mean there's just no way around that we
have to get through the learning curve
whether it's a learning curve of
Facebook Ads whether it's a learning
curve of WordPress or content marketing
we have to kind of persevere that that's
just a truth in business anybody who
even looks like they came out of nowhere
as an overnight success there's probably
five ten fifteen years of perseverance
that happened that no one saw because it
was all building up to that event at
which they blew
right so like Gary Vaynerchuk for
example working in his dad's
you know liquor store from the age of 14
till his 30s before he started making
any content about being kind of a
business thought leader
if you will and
now you know you see him you look Wow
Gary is just on fire
but what we most people don't see is
those 810 years for me my story I
started making money online in 2002 2003
it took seven eight years for me to go
full-time with this and then it took
another three or four years for my wife
and I to be full-time on our business
alone without having to do client work
so it's been a long path for me and my
whole goal in this channel everything I
do is to kind of help simplify that and
and speed up the path for you through
maybe showing you some of the mistakes
that I've made because I've definitely
gone down some paths that did not bear
fruit and that that's what we're talking
about here so the big question content
marketing or Facebook advertising
there's no real one for sure easy way to
say it they both work and there's
actually several ways to do both of them
now for me and my business evolution
when my wife and I started our business
we didn't have any money literally we
barely scraped enough money to get by in
order to kind of get our first hosting
package and I remember it was 95 dollars
and 40 cents before that I went all-in
on a business that failed we both had to
move back into my parents house at the
age of 30 so we hit rock bottom and
bounced off a rock bottom but I knew in
my heart that this internet business was
for me I knew that lifestyle I knew we
both know we're entrepreneurs we have
that kind of mentality so we invested in
a wordpress hosting and we started
publishing and we kept publishing and we
stayed focused on building an email list
with what we were publishing and the
reason is one of my earlier businesses
that I had I was direct linking people
from MySpace to an affiliate program and
I was earning what's called CPA or cost
per acquisition I made $40 every time I
delivered a new member to this affiliate
program and it worked great until they
changed their Terms of Service and all
of a sudden I couldn't use these links
anymore they started banning the links
that I was putting up because I was
direct linking I had no email list
nothing and my income completely went to
zero
right so building the email list was the
key and since my wife and I didn't have
any money to invest we went aggressively
into content marketing we studied
keyword research and the basics of
on-page SEO we have never focused on
backlink building that's never been a
priority we've looked at some things we
understand how it works we try to create
the best content in the world in our
niche that's highly shareable so when
other content creators and other people
with websites find our content they read
our content and they look at it they're
like wow that is so deep and detailed
I can't recreate that myself I'm just
gonna link that to my users that's been
our entire approach and it took a lot of
time but here's the really cool side
effect of building our business in this
manner now that were eight years plus
into building this business I've been
doing some traveling recently and we
went on a trip we've gone to Bali
Thailand New Zealand Costa Rica Mexico
and on over the last four years I've
been kind of living in Airbnb is from
around the world and we've been able to
kind of detach from our business for
several weeks and sometimes months at a
time doing what I would consider minimum
basic maintenance and our business still
continues to grow we're not just
maintaining the same income levels our
business is continuing to grow
month after month and most of that is
from all of the efforts we put in over
the first several years through content
marketing you know I sometimes when I
travel I'll turn off all of my facebook
ads completely I will shut down Facebook
for a month to two months out of time
and I'll just walk away from it and I'm
okay with that and I love having the
stability in my business of having that
kind of core of traffic from the search
engines based on our previous content
marketing efforts that really kind of
sustains us and gives us a next level of
freedom I know a lot of people out there
who are just they have to be in Facebook
every day they're kind of hitting that
feeder bar and they put in $2 and they
get out 2 dollars and 50 cents and
they're always real meticulous and that
kind of business does work and you can
get massive growth out of that style of
business but it requires a lot more kind
of ongoing management I believe
but obviously if you scale it to a
certain point you can bring someone in
so enter I think about 2013 I started
doing Facebook pay-per-click advertising
now the first kind of important thing I
want to share is that I didn't start
advertising on Facebook until we were
both fully comfortably self-employed
covering our lifestyle and our savings
and paying taxes and all those like
grown-up things that we unfortunately
have to pay for that was all being
covered by our business and we had
profits left over at the end of the year
here in the United States we don't
necessarily want to pay ourselves a
massive amount of money as income it's
often beneficial to reinvest the
business income back into the business
and that's when I began the process of
learning and kind of executing on
Facebook pay-per-click I was doubling
down the kind of the the house money
right I started gambling on house money
we were making enough money from our
website through the content marketing
efforts and through the funnel we
created that we were running organic
traffic through and I was taking those
funds and I was deploying them into
learning the Facebook pay-per-click
marketing system into generating more
leads and tapping into even more people
who weren't searching on Google for us
but I know they're out there right
there's I think there's 1.9 billion
monthly active users on Facebook I
believe it's something to the tune of
1.2 or 1.3 billion daily active users on
Facebook there's more users on Google
for sure but those users on Facebook are
often bored they're kind of looking
around for something they're just kind
of killing time and the interruption
marketing mechanism lends itself really
well to our niche right like have you
ever tried meditation you want to try
this meditation and somebody's in the
right position the time like okay I'll
give that a shot they'll click they'll
go they'll download it they'll get on
our email list and our same relationship
building kind of automation through our
follow-up sequence that ran for years on
the organic side of things then just
followed up with them on the Facebook
side of things and it started working
but here's the thing with Facebook it
took me about two years and I honestly
would assume between six and ten
thousand dollars in
negative cash flow right like I was
getting leads for sure I was getting
customers from the first kind of couple
of years of my facebook advertising but
it was an it was an investment to learn
a system and I was definitely cash flow
negative for the first part
I just knew and I still know the value
and the potential of Facebook
advertising you know it's no secret that
there's really good deals on Facebook
pay-per-click right now and for certain
businesses when you get things dialed
right you're able to just really
increase the numbers my niche doesn't
lend itself to that the the niche the
meditation niche the spirituality niche
not everyone's willing to go invest 100
200 500 a thousand dollars in kind of
personal spiritual development and
that's perfect that's great I don't ask
them to to be honest but there's some
businesses like that make money online
niche that people are able to sell one
two three five thousand dollar products
that have ten twenty thirty thousand
dollar back-end sales all based on
Facebook pay-per-click because in some
business niches you know if you're going
after entrepreneurs and you're going to
show me a course that's going to speed
up my facebook learning curve and allow
me to make money faster I can see that
$2,000 investment as an opportunity to
kind of expedite the process of getting
profitable and in that situation I see
the light for a return on that
investment and I'm willing to put more
money in and purchase a product like
that because I know it's going to pay me
back on the other end and these are the
kinds of things that you have to think
about in your business what are you
offering what is your what's your
average order value are people who are
just browsing around Facebook interested
in what you have I do think you could
promote any kind of a business on
Facebook but the question is can you get
better reach on your energy with a
Google base or an organic SEO and
content marketing approach then Facebook
and will be doing some questions and
answers here in the future so I think
the first thing to kind of ask yourself
is you know in your DNA are you able to
delay gratification are you able to take
action every single day taking steps
towards a much brighter future that's
going to take three to five years to
figure out right are you in a position
to really work hard roll up your sleeves
and ignore the results in the short term
because you know you're going to be
creating significant long-term results
for you for your family for really truly
changing your lifestyle if your answer
to that is yes then consider the content
marketing approach because it does take
a delay of gratification because content
marketing simply takes time it takes
time for you to prove in the eyes of
Google that your site is an authority
and authority is a word you're going to
be hearing a lot more from me in this
video and in the future
because building yourself up as an
authority and I don't care if it's in
dog collars skin care green smoothies
chia seed shakes
toe fungus removal yeah I just went
there I don't care what your niche
you're choosing to go into is but once
you establish yourself as the authority
on those topics you can literally go
gobble up all of the search engine
traffic not all of it but if you get
that number one spot you're getting 40
to 45 percent of clicks for that keyword
phrase and the number 2 person is
getting maybe 12% of clicks so when you
build an authority site you're able to
hit that number one spot on Google for
varying keywords more effectively over
time this strategy lends itself to
people who are natural writers but if
you're comfortable speaking out content
there's tools like Dragon Naturally
dictating which I use to write my long
blog posts you can also record YouTube
videos and have them transcribed by
Trent T or int com so really cool kind
of bought base trends scription system
that's what I use on my videos and then
I have a copy editor / writer go into
those transcriptions and really make
them very readable and I call it
capturing your marathon runners pace
right you got to get into that groove to
where you're just kind of making mega
progress right if you're doing a
marathon I think it's 26.2 miles of
running which is absolutely insane but
you do not come out of the gates full
speed you do not come out of the gate
sprinting you will not have enough
stamina to make it all the way to the
end and content marketing is so similar
to that that it is a marathon but the
end goal in that marathon is a business
that is going to connect you with
hundreds of thousands of people
searching for
what you offer on autopilot right like
we get literally 25 to 30,000 visits to
our main site every single day we have
advertisements on the site we sell apps
we sell books we sell information
products we have a membership program we
have a lot of different things for
people I have a retargeting pixel on
there we build our email list we build
relationships with these people and
honestly we can walk away for a month
two or three we're planning a really big
road trip this summer that's going to be
a great adventure for us and we're going
to be unplugged for more than half the
time and the reason we can do this and
stay confident is because of all the
authority that we've built in our
website now on the other side on the
Facebook side like a lot of people and
I'm coming at this from the standpoint
of I get a lot of feedback in the
comments and I pay attention to that in
addition to the survey and people are
having a lot of challenges with the
Facebook platform there's a lot of
people feeling like it doesn't work and
that's simply not true it does work but
your message on your landing page and
your message on your ad and your
targeting in your ad set level and your
campaign structure all of those
different components have to be dialed
in right and what I think is happening
is there's so many people talking about
how great Facebook advertising is
they're making it sound easier than it
actually is because there's a lot of
moving parts that you have to get dialed
in correctly when I first approached
this so I learned something from a
friend in the real estate investing
industry I used to flip houses when I
was in college before the global
financial crisis before the market kind
of obliterated and I lost about $60,000
in real estate investing in 2009 and I
thought that was gonna pay off my
student loans anyways I knew a guy who
was also a day trader he did real estate
investing but he also day traded and I
asked him about how he got into day
trading they said you know what miles I
took 50 thousand dollars that I expected
to lose he said I thought how much would
a college degree cost a college degree
would be about forty to fifty thousand
dollars he said he doesn't have a
college degree he didn't think a college
degree was the direction to make money
he was in his 50s and he figured he
would take that 50 grand and instead of
getting a degree he would go invest it
in education he would be patient with
him
self and he would begin day trading and
by the time I met him he was a very
successful day trader and he said he
wasted lost invested spent he was cash
flow negative for the first 45 plus
thousand dollars of that investment he
really thought it wasn't going to work
out at one point but then something
happened things started to click he
started to make a little bit of money a
little bit more money a little bit more
money and with Facebook pay-per-click
marketing it's so similar to that
literally I invested thousands upon
thousands if not ten thousand plus
dollars in the system learning well what
happens if I do this and what happens if
I do that and what about this way and
can I write an ad like that and what
happens I do this with my funnel and 99%
of things I tried didn't work but at
some point I stumbled across a way of
putting these things together that
worked for me is it the only way to put
campaigns together absolutely not
there's a lot of different ways to run
Facebook campaigns and that's kind of
the the challenge there's a lot of noise
out on the webosphere
about o paper engagement and seizing
your pixel and blah blah blah which is
false by the way and I'll do a video on
that later but like there's a lot of
opinions out there and if you're jumping
in from one idea to another idea to
another idea and you test their method
and you test their method you test their
method and their method and then their
method you're never going to get the
depth of information you need so if
you're in a position to potentially
invest over the next three to six months
five to ten thousand dollars into your
business and you're ready to really
commit to the process with the potential
of losing money for months on end right
to learn how this all works and get this
to dialed and if you're willing and if
you're a risk taker if you're a gambler
at heart if you're able to kind of go
into this kind of a situation
confidently hold your cool maintain your
emotions to be able to look at it as an
investment in learning a system then it
definitely can be for you now I do
recommend a specific Facebook course at
this point in time the reason I
recommend it is because as I said I
figured out a way to work that worked
for me right and in that process I
learned some bad habits I'll be
perfectly honest with you there were
things I was doing that I still kind of
have a tendency to try
now that aren't actually beneficial to
me in my campaigns but yet I just kind
of learned it by fumbling forward so I
learned some of these bad habits so I've
been unlearning a lot of bad habits to
implement some new better habits and I
feel like it's even more difficult for
me having gone this approach to kind of
like rewire my brain to think about ads
and campaigns differently it's working
and I'm making more progress now than
ever but really that one course has been
kind of a hinge for me to really speed
up the process I paid two thousand four
it's currently sold for like fifteen
hundred dollars and if you're interested
and ready to spend five to ten thousand
dollars in the next three to six months
growing your Facebook kind of game if
you will I highly recommend taking a
portion of that and investing in
education from someone who's crushing it
right I'm happy to share everything I
know in these videos they're not all
that organized I don't have all the
answers I'm still a student and a
practitioner of this myself
so I'm trying to help you as much I can
but I'm still learning from people who
are way farther along than I am and I
highly recommend that you approach it in
that manner if you really are truly
committed you know I think that for
people who have very little amounts of
time they're well paid professionals and
they really want to change their
lifestyle the Facebook advertising side
of things to grow a list and build an
audience in a niche is potentially the
shortcut but the expense of that
shortcut is you have to have money to
throw at it and you have to have the
patience and the diligence and kind of
the just the willingness to the
discipline that is absolutely the word I
was just fishing for you got to have the
discipline to stick with it to run the
numbers to stick with it when it's not
going well to get through to the other
side on the other side of that coin the
content marketing side of things you
don't necessarily need that money but
you need to be willing to put a blog
post out every day for two to three
years and you might be like miles that
sounds crazy right 365 days a year what
about Christmas the more you can do and
each of these blog posts have to be
great the more you can do in a condensed
period of time
I mean content marketing the greater
results you're going to see if you work
really hard for a month on your blog and
then you don't touch it for three and
then you work really hard for a couple
of weeks you don't touch it you're not
going to get the same kind of results as
if you hit blog post every single day
day in day out if you need to have a
couple of days a week that you don't
publish do what you do right like I
think it's kind of a personal race to a
thousand great blog posts because when
you reach a thousand great blog posts on
everything that you're doing you will
absolutely be one of the biggest most
informative largest most comprehensive
websites on any niche alive today I
don't care what niche it is and you need
to focus on the keywords and I got a lot
of SEO content here and I've really
taught the nuts and bolts of this I
believe and really it's like it's a
mindset thing and when you focus mainly
on being of service to an audience
really I think this channel is a good
kind of expression of that right like my
goal is to put out the absolute best
content I can for you as often as
possible I started out with a hundred
and twenty videos in 120 days I got
really sporadic for two months doing
approximately two videos per week for
two months got right back on the video a
day for a couple of months and now I'm
doing three to four videos per week and
my growth is insane the numbers the
month-over-month numbers the ninety day
over 90-day numbers are continuing to
absolutely explode and I love it it's
fun but even before the numbers were
rewarding my focus was on helping you
because there was no one out there
helping me when I was getting started
and I was like everybody out there who
they act like they're gonna help you on
Facebook or on YouTube or wherever you
find them they're just gonna act like
they're gonna help you they're gonna
give you just a snip and then they're
gonna try to sell you on their high
ticket product and 99% of those high
ticket products are not worth it I've
bought so many of them it's so
disheartening and I know that's where a
lot of you are and that's why I'm trying
to help you literally from the heart and
I see audience growth as the number one
focus for me and that's why being able
to focus not on what am I getting out of
this but how can I best help how am I
to help you most and that is so
rewarding that that's why I'm able to
keep this marathon runners pace because
doing this video today is not about me
this video is for you and that's that's
the approach and the mindset that's
required because that's what gets me
through those challenging times when the
negative self-talk comes in and I'm kind
of like I don't know blah blah blah like
should I do it I'm feeling lazy I'm
tired man I flew crossed from New
Zealand to the US went to a conference
then drove for 20 22 hours to a
different part of the country showed up
sick as a dog like flu fever barely
could get out of bed and you know what I
put a video up every single day even
when I was sick as a dog because it
wasn't about me right it was about you
it's about helping you and obviously
there's some long-term potential
benefits for me and having a large
audience that knows likes and trusts me
and that's where I'm going would love to
hit the New York Times bestseller list
at some point with a book and I might
just ask you to buy that book at some
point and I hope that I will have
delivered enough value at that point
that when I do ask or go for that that
hook if you will in gary vaynerchuk's
terms that you're there and i think you
know a nine dollar book from a guy who's
given everything he gives i think
there's a good chance of that working
how do I know I'm modeling someone like
Gary Vaynerchuk who's proving this to
work so that's really it right and
that's about the end of the kind of
talking head portion of this we're going
to shift into questions and answers now
and really I just wanted to pose those
ideas and understandings to you so you
could kind of hopefully analyze where
you're at where your budget is where
your time is what your kind of personal
DNA is like so you could understand
where you're at so you can potentially
best approach moving forward because I
do think mastering one of these two
disciplines to get going is going to be
easier than trying to master them both
at the same time for me I didn't have an
option to go into paid traffic I
literally had to go directly into the
content marketing because I had no money
I had to make it work
I knew it work I trusted I've now used
content marketing and these content
challenges so many times I just did it
again on this channel that it's proven
that works it wasn't specific to our
niche my
wife doesn't have some magic we don't we
didn't stumble upon a super successful
something I just replicated that whole
entire process here in a very very
challenging niche the internet marketing
make money online niche it is it is such
a challenging niche to grow an audience
in in this day and age it's hyper hyper
saturated and it's super noisy yet I'm
breaking through the noise because of my
focus on giving content regular content
give as much as I can jab jab jab jab
jab go go go and you got to have that
approach for a content marketing program
to work and I'm in it for the long haul
right it's like May of 2017 I've been
doing this for about nine months now
I've really curious to see what my
one-year number is I'm really curious to
see what my three-year number is I see
this being a five year Plus plan and I'm
excited to see where that goes and I'm
just in that marathon runners pace just
boom boom boom right gotta just gotta
hit my numbers just get my videos up do
as best I can
every single day and I know that if I'm
bringing it every day that I'll get my
reward in the future and that's because
I could delay gratification which is
probably one of those powerful things
entrepreneurs can learn if you're in a
position you got some cash flow you got
a great idea you know your target market
you're ready to go into it Facebook Ads
can very well be a great way to not only
kind of grow a business from the ground
up but to scale that bad boy to multiple
six figures seven figures 6 figure
monthly incomes
the the potential return through
facebook advertising is huge and there's
a window of opportunity right now in
facebook advertising for sure the world
is catching up Gary Vaynerchuk is
spreading the word it's really under
priced right now on the deals were able
to get right now are still incredible I
can get 60 cent leads all day long on
Google and Bing they cost me four to
five dollars per lead right and at some
point Facebook leads will be four to
five dollars per lead their cost per
thousand impressions will be fifty
seventy-five a hundred dollars per
thousand impressions whereas right now
it's five eight ten fifteen dollars per
thousand impressions so so there is kind
of this window of opportunity which is
why I'm so encouraging of education and
committing and just knowing if you're
going down that path you have to have a
bankroll right you can't sit down at a
poker table with 20 bucks and
to get things going you need to sit down
with three five hundred dollars on a 1/2
table you need to be willing to sit
there long enough at that table and turn
away enough of the bad hands and be
patient to get those ones that hit and
when you find one that hits you have to
maximize your return on that one and
that's exactly what it is with Facebook
advertising cool so I'm gonna flip over
now we're going to try this new software
out let's see if it works I'm trying to
go for picture and picture and we'll be
able to see the comments and we'll be
able to see my screen so I don't have to
flip back and forth as much as I did on
the last one hit me up with some
questions in the livestream area and
let's see how I can be of assistance to
you guys so here we are and I'm hoping
you guys can see my screen I believe you
can I'm committing that committing to it
we're just going for it so on there's

do consulting work I don't I don't do
any one-on-one because it would distract
me from making these videos and making
the videos and doing as much for as many
people is my focus I might change that
in the future when I stabilize but like
I said I got this big adventure coming
up this summer so really anything that
keeps me from my facebook ads in my main
business and from these videos because
I'm trying to help the world here that's
just a bigger calling for me I can't I
don't have time yet but maybe at some
point Karin Patel I was at the cutoff
last week can you advertise a blog post
on Facebook and bring check yeah
absolutely so Karin Patel
you can definitely advertise this is
what's called inbound marketing I have a
video if you search my channel for the
2-step Facebook marketing campaign it's
just that you do pay to click to website
so somebody reads it at that point you
plant the pixel when they go back to
Facebook they see an opt-in that's
usually a content upgrade about that
same subject they want that can work
really good when you run that kind of a
camp
Payne you need to add the cost between
those two campaigns you need to add
those costs together to get your true
cost per lead and I would compare that
with just a click to lead type campaign
that would be a conversion campaign and
I would see am I getting 60 cent leads
here and 75 cent leads here great do the
60 cent lead option right you want to
let the data drive it's very worth
testing what's the best way to run ads
on Facebook for software affiliate
marketing so I don't understand what you
mean by software affiliate marketing
Brad like that it seems a little
abstract to me like it's the same as
running ads everywhere right you got to
know who your customer avatar is know
who your target market is you got to
understand where they're at in their
head what's that conversation they're
having in their head
people think in forms of questions we're
always questioning what's in it for me
we're often thinking how do I fix this
man I'm losing sleep god I got to figure
out how oh man how do I fix that and
when you understand what those questions
are in the head of the person that
pertain directly to what you're selling
then your advertisement bridges that
conversation that they're having with
your solution and you could offer a free
item that they download and read to
consume to educate them you have to help
them build the beliefs needed in order
to be ready to buy what you have how
that works for you is very abstract and
different it takes a lot of testing of
messaging but it really ultimately comes
from knowing your customer avatar who
they are what their life goals are how
your product solves that and then how do
you posture that or position that in a
way that meets them where they're at
with that conversation in their head and
gets them to take action I wish there
was like a you know go click this button
