hey everyone this is stefan from
projectlifemastery.com and today i'm
super excited to be interviewing a
friend of mine john chris Danny all the
way from San Diego is that right here in
San Diego right now ah Los Angeles in LA
outside of I'm pretty close but John I'm
gonna be interviewing him today to talk
a little bit about affiliate marketing
because John's had massive success
through the years building online
businesses being involved with affiliate
marketing and I thought he'd be the
perfect person to pick the brain of and
ask some questions related to your
strategies that can help other people
get started with affiliate marketing so
I want to thank you man so much for
taking the time I know we're just
talking before this that you just got
back from a Tony Robbins seminar ago I'm
a huge fan of as well so she's gonna
pumped up and SSD right now yes sir I'm
I'm massively mad massive action okay
well um to jump into things I love you
know for just for you to share with
people a little bit about your story and
how do we got into internet marketing
sure so uh it's it's kind of funny it'll
probably sound like the warning this may
sound a little cliche but I was uh I was
in you know I think it was like 2008 and
I was I was in college and I just got
completely bored of college I I wasn't
learning anything I didn't feel like I
had any direction to my life and I I
didn't know where I was going and I had
two more years left and I was wondering
what the you know where where's
this all headed and the I thought about
it and it just freaked me out I was
gonna have could be a corporate ladder
have 1.45 children be dissatisfied and
and I went to Thai took a year off to go
to Thailand and one of the books I
brought along was this book called the
4-hour workweek by this guy named Tim
Ferriss and it's a you know the whole
book is about how
can you know how you can have location
freedom and time freedom running an
internet business and I you know I've
been doing various things like day
trading and you know different kind of
investment stuff before that but once I
kind of started learning about affiliate
marketing and how you can run a business
from anywhere in the world you don't
have to be a slave to kind of like the
Mad Money you know like stock signals
and all that stuff I I was hooked and I
kind of dedicated my life to you know to
really it was funny because I was
supposed to be relaxing in Thailand but
I just had this I I got overcome with
this bug and all I wanted to do I was in
the most beautiful place and I was like
I want to be free I don't want to be
living on my last $500 I want to I want
to I want to be successful I don't want
to be a failure and you know it's it's
yeah it's been a really that was the
start yeah it's been a long ride that's
awesome I can relate to that because
actually the 4-hour workweek was a book
that I read that got me inspired just
because it went totally against the
whole traditional society you know 9:00
to 5:00 you could retire and I read that
and actually funny enough I went to
Thailand as well start my first business
and I was there for three months and I
was just like that's so permanent
hospice and stuff but I was like the
only one that was just like there
working what everyone else is like
partying yeah it's pretty fun as you can
live super cheap fare and have a pretty
good lifestyle while doing it so yeah
ever since like I got into online
marketing I discovered that as well I
just knew that this this trumps any
other - or job or anything like that so
definitely can relate to that yeah it's
it's I bet I I think it's the ultimate
place it's the old in now nowadays I'm
starting to bring on employees and I'm
starting to bring on people who I
consider peers who are really not not
not virtual
employees but like real freakin smart
badasses who are just who challenge my
ways of thinking but you know I think
for everybody to start you have to start
at a place from freedom until you truly
know I didn't know I was going to want
to build um you know a business in you
know in the space I'm in right now but I
think everybody should start by getting
money out of the way I don't know it's
this I think having having a starting
with freedom I think is better than then
starting in slavery and trying to work
yourself out that makes sense yeah I
totally agreed that I did the same sort
of thing where I just focused on I
wasn't really passionate about what I
was doing but I just did it to make the
passive income so I could ask a good job
and not having that Jah crates that
freedom where you can focus on whatever
it is you want whenever yeah yeah that's
really cool um you mind sharing a little
bit you know what what is your business
model with affiliate marketing and if
you don't mind as well we're ensuring a
little bit about some of the success
that you've had because I know a lot of
people like can you make money doing
this or you know there's all that
confusion I think about a feeling so I'm
up there a little bit about the kind of
business model you're in with affiliate
marketing and some of that success
sure um affiliate marketing is well in
I'll try to explain in my own words
affiliate marketing is it's a really
simple business model it's just you're
selling stuff for people and you get a
commission for it and you know in in
traditional sales you know in let's say
door-to-door sales you might you might
go door-to-door and knock on people's
doors and sell them solar panels or sell
them cable TV or sell them home security
systems or you know or you know mow
their lawn and those business models the
way the salesperson you know the way
they know the sales person is there's a
little box I don't know if you've ever
you know whenever you you know go even
go to Best Buy you know and people ring
you up at the register there's always a
little
that says oh this was the salesperson
you know and and affiliate marketing you
know you don't have a box because we're
in the digital age it's just a link so
if somebody clicks on your link that
tells the computer that oh you were the
person responsible for creating that
sale so it's really easy and it's it's a
much higher level activity you're just
really all you're doing is you know you
are you're choosing products to sell you
know you go to what's called an
affiliate Network which might be
something like Clickbank Clickbank is
kind of the most well-known one and they
say here's a bunch of products you can
sell here's a products for weight loss
here's a product for skin care whatever
and then you say hey I like that product
I'm going to take that link and I'm
going to write a story about this this
product on Facebook and I'm going to put
my link in there if people are
interested in buying
so really all affiliate marketing is
doing is you know you're writing stories
you know you're writing stories in in
forums or on the comments of people's
blogs or social media and you're putting
your link if peak for if people are
interested in buying so it's a very the
only difference between regular quote
unquote sales and marketing is just
instead of speaking it yeah it's you
know which is not not not a scalable
activity your voice is going to go dad
in a couple days if you're if you're
talking to people all day you know
you're just writing stories on the
Internet and the great thing about those
stories is more than one people might
more than one person might read your
story yeah and what's great is maybe
even thousands or millions of people per
day could read your story about that
product and buy it so it's you can make
just massive amounts of money um the
ability to reach people is is absolutely
phenomenal um is that a good a gel-based
yes that's awesome okay
when you simplified it really well okay
and for terms of the story that can also
be above you know a blog post exactly if
you a YouTube video could be you know
anything on all these different channels
that are out there and is that primarily
what you focus on is your your marketing
more the may be a piece of content and
then you're kind of funneling them into
a product or are you funneling them into
an email list or what what does that
funnel look like and I'm sure to make a
little bit different based on the
product and everything but what's that
typical funnel would look like sure sure
um so I'm all about you know I if you
said it right you could the story it can
be a million different formats it can be
a video it can be a it can be a you know
it can be a blog post it can be a
Facebook post it can be a facebook video
it can be a can be a forum post it can I
mean there's like a million different
ways you can create um typically what
what I'm what I'm teaching people I I
try to you know what I tell people to do
because a lot of people contact me on
how to get started um I just you know I
just have them write stories I don't now
if I were to start from scratch I would
probably I would you know I've never
really done this I just started trying
it out but I would tell people email
lists are amazing now you know I think I
think email lists are probably one of
the best one of the best things you can
do in affiliate marketing if I was to do
it all over again
excuse me I would focus on the I would
focus on building an email list I think
because one thing I didn't realize is if
you if you can write interesting stuff
or if you can find interesting stuff you
can email people in you know once or
twice every single day and they will
read everything you have to say if what
if you're working people are interested
you know people want people want content
so if people are interested in let's say
losing weight for instance they'll get
don't take an email from you
every single day that actually they
prefer you send them an email every
single day so if I was starting from
scratch again I would have focused a lot
more on kind of kind of more of a brand
an email list you more promote info
product sort of physical products or you
know what do you prefer so I've worked
in a number of different niches I've
actually worked in a lot of different
niches and I prefer um I would say I
prefer physical products with an
information product component I think
the best I think I mean this is going to
go off in a weird tangent but I believe
the age of materialism is ending its on
its its on its final throes and kind of
like a bell curve where at the other end
of the bell curve with materialism and I
think at the at the end of the day
material products are good to help
people
you know to to help people but
ultimately the change always comes from
within you can you know I can give you a
you know I can give you a I don't know
if you use like brain boosting
supplements or if you use workout
supplements you know pre-workout but pre
workout isn't going to help you if you
don't work out you know so you've still
got to make that change within you know
if you're you know pre-workout will help
you if you go to the gym you know but so
I think every physical product you know
a Lamborghini isn't going to make you
happy but a Lamborghini combined with a
positive you know psychology and and a
generous outlook for helping people out
in life is a great it will have crazy
amounts of happiness so I so I always
look for products that have kind of both
you know you know I think the best
products have also teach people about
you know the product and all that stuff
yeah oh and oh and I've also had success
so I focused a lot on the weight loss
niche skincare niche um my initial
successes were actually in the
investment niche as promoting gold
investment programs and these are
programs where I might get three leads a
day but the average sale was eighty
thousand dollars and I would get three
percent commission for that so I'd make
you know twenty five hundred dollars
every couple days and that was really
that was a really easy affiliate program
that got me started their affiliate
programs for everything and what's great
is no matter what somebody's interested
in there's going to be an affiliate
program for that so um yeah I to speak
briefly about my success last year last
year I did over 2.9 million dollars um I
can show tax returns or whatever but uh
last year I was yeah you know we we grew
a lot I do I advertise on an I advertise
on Facebook I do all advertising
advertise on native ad networks like
tabouleh Outbrain content at graphic
content native ads mg ID et cetera and I
do some advertising on Adwords as well
and I just started messing around with
youtube I think YouTube's pretty pretty
cool and you know they're so you know
there's so many if if you really learn
if you focus on learning affiliate
marketing understanding skills you can
they're just a million unspoken for
opportunities out there and it's crazy
because that's that's pretty amazing and
you know is there opportunity in almost
any niche you see like let's say has a
lot of people you know some people want
to build their business around a passion
right maybe a site ography or dog
training or whatever you know yoga or
something like that so have you found
like almost every niche there's an
opportunity to profit and make money as
an affiliate yep so the answer is yes
but
um so the answer is yes I mean if you
look at amazon.com for instance they
have an affiliate program and they have
a free product known to man on there so
so you can literally make money on every
program known to man the but is I
understand if people have passions but
are you know what I would say to those
people is our businesses are meant to
fuel our passions they don't necessarily
have to be our passions I think if you
go into business you should focus on
making money first and use you know
because if if you're interested here let
me let me do an example
um um there's not maybe somebody's
interested in like watercolor paintings
or something like that or maybe somebody
there there probably is money for
watercolor painting in affiliate
marketing
but not that much compared to other
niches you're you're putting yourself as
it I I love the notion yeah and sorry
I'm a veer foot verge from you from you
know on this particular point but I I
don't I believe people if they're folk
you know if they're truly devoted to
creating a really great outcome for
themselves with vets providing for their
family or traveling or whatever they
should focus on they should focus in
their business on what's going to help
them get to that outcome immediately as
fast as possible and I think if you are
trying to do something differently
you're you're putting yourself in a you
know you're you're working uphill and so
I I just I just say hey dude you know
focus on where you know folk what if if
you if they're if you're if you're
starting out if you've got money and if
you are at that place where you are
financially free focus on anything you
freaking lot but if you are not
financially free yet focus on where you
you know focus on focus on a big niche
or you can make a lot of money you know
you know and the biggest niches are
you know I you know it's yeah there's a
lot of niches out there you know I think
info products are great but I I would
say finance you know selling to small
grows targeted you know selling to
Richmond or selling to women those are
the two biggest niches and um you know
focus on that first no I agree I mean
there's certain niches that you know to
be passionate about but there might not
be that much potential for yeah right
and and sometimes you know there's going
to be certain opportunities that present
where it is higher ticket products or
there's just more demand there um and
you definitely got a way that in running
a business because a business has got to
make money it's got a profit and
everything and I think I know for myself
you know at certain points I was like
doing book reviews and you know
funneling them to Amazon affiliate and I
was making like 30 cents for nill and
stuff like that and it's kind of
changing around the model a little bit
definitely made a difference as well so
yeah I totally agree with that
yeah um let me ask you up to you know
when it comes to finding a niche or
maybe finding a plot products you want
to promote or sell are you primarily
focused on a niche or you're going to
build your business let's say around a
specific product and if so is there
certain criteria that you look for
certain things you might look for in
promoting a product or you know making
sure maybe you get a certain Commission
to make it worthwhile for you or you
know making sure the products got a good
sales page and converts well if what are
the things you look for in ignition
applause sure um I would so to answer
your first question how do I find things
um I I believe affiliates can either do
one of two ways they can specialize one
in two ways they can specialize in a in
a in a traffic source for a vertical so
like you had just mentioned Amazon um
you focused on a traffic source you said
hey I've got this mastered you know I've
got Amazon master
you know I'm going to focus on just
selling different verticals and the ones
that make me the most money I'll do more
of whatever um now I I think that's one
way to do things you know and you say
okay I'm advertising on YouTube well
what what can I sell to people on you
you know YouTube you can probably sell
anything to people but you know what
would be the best thing to sell the
people on YouTube maybe you know it's I
don't know you know
camera equipment like Casey nice add or
whatever but awesome vlogger by the way
have you have you have you checked out
Casey Casey me stat no oh dude he is
he's got I mean he's he's one of the
more prolific youtubers yeah okay sorry
see a sty and II i STI t he he has the
funniest blogs ever he is he is the
epitome of doing vlogs right and he's
got millions of followers he's hilarious
and he's got all these affiliate
marketing links in his uh in his he
makes more money from you know affiliate
marketing links just you know he says
this is my DSLR camera I use and he has
like a two thousand dollar camera is
he's the photographer beach yeah yeah
he's in the photography niche but he's
got millions of fans he has millions of
followers all he does is he does a daily
blog he doesn't he doesn't all he does
is he just films his life and he puts up
affiliate marketing links every day it's
awesome I mean it's so cool it's like oh
wow and his life doesn't involve what's
cool is his life it's not like him
working all the time it's just him like
I'm taking my kids out I'm doing you
know I'm going to you know you know
Central Park it's great in this I mean I
think it shows the possibilities of
affiliate marketing you could do
anything the Frick you want you know and
but so sorry going back to your circling
back how do I determine if the product
is good or not or if it's competitive
because there are a lot of products you
can sell in a particular niche what I do
is so you start you start to uh the most
important thing is ultimately you know
your arm
why you know if you can if you can get
you know if you can spend ten dollars
promoting a certain product and make
more than that or if you know or just
how much money you make overall you know
your overall profit if you're doing a
blog and you're getting SEO traffic or
you're doing a vlog um you know it's can
you make more money than the time and
the time and the money you're putting
into it and I know a lot of the numbers
in my head so I know for you know for
instance like a skin you know a skin
care product you know I want to you know
I want to make like maybe maybe thirty
five dollars and I also you know I want
to make thirty five dollars if I get a
sale for somebody and I want to get a
piece of the upsell you know so because
some affiliate programs they give you
extra credit they give you extra money
if people buy the upsell because lots
these affiliate programs they have
upsells now to further monetize each
customer and maybe they'll sell a skin
cream and they'll sell a members forum
you know at membership forum so they'll
give you money for both of those things
you create sales for so I know a lot of
the kind of numbers I think it's
something you get a sense for as you go
along
but I would also say um you know you
test things out you know it's very cheap
to test um
test things out on you know I might set
up I might just copy and paste the same
blog post and just change the product
that I'm recommending so I might I might
write the same blog post on two
different products two different skin
creams and I might just recommend one
skin cream that time then another one
the other time or I recommend one ebook
on one page and recommend another ebook
on the other page and and then I you
know I I watch as people come in and I
say okay which one makes me more money
okay you know and I'll kind of I'll go
with that one awesome and let's talk a
little bit about traffic down because
you've actually did some Facebook
you needed advertising yeah what would
our wonder some of your favorites and
what do you think are the best you know
should someone just focus on one source
of traffic at first or should it focus
on many like what you recommend for
people in generating trap sure I would
focus on I actually I'd actually focus
on uh this is shifted because I'm I'm a
focus freak but to the behest of my wife
and other people who try to annoy me
during the day but uh I would focus on I
would actually I'd actually put deposits
down when if you're if you're going to
decide to start affiliate marketing and
make it a serious commitment and if
you're not willing to take the slower
route which is you know waiting for
organic traffic and whatnot I would put
deposits down on two to three ad
networks and I would tell people what I
actually would actually tell people to
do is I tell people to find a coin and
to literally take that coin spin it and
figure out whether they want to do
Facebook or Google and and because so
many people come into this industry with
so many preconceived notions and it's
not you know they say oh Google is
saturated or Facebook doesn't like
affiliates or people come in with so
many preconceived notions of what is
right and what is wrong and that is your
ego speaking in business ego doesn't
have a place business is about making
money so I tell people pick one of the
big ones Google or Facebook flip a coin
and then also you know pick some you
know pick one or two smaller ones and
put a deposit down and putting a deposit
down on these ad networks is the best
way to get started because then your
money has left has left the port and now
you are officially in business and um so
I the traffic sources I like the most
that being said are you know it used you
know used to be Facebook but because
I focus on a particular niche
Facebook doesn't like my particular
niche so you know if you know so I focus
on other ad networks such as native ads
comm um tabula Rev content um M GID ah
yeah and those you know we're
experimenting around with YouTube
YouTube advertising which is exciting
yeah so when you're doing a lot of PPC
type stuff is there a way that you can
track um you know it have accurate
tracking around the sales that you're
getting because part of it you got to
put a guess the conversion tracking
pixel Thank You page or how how is that
the a tracking it so it depends on you
know I would uh I use a click tracking
program I recommend everybody if you're
doing paid advertising if you're doing a
pic if you're doing paid advertising and
recommend everybody part of part of the
kind of part of your office setup you
know part of your virtual office for
anybody doing paid advertising I believe
is click tracking I wouldn't do anything
without it I recommend a company called
balloon vol you um um they're a software
