How To Start A Money-Making YouTube Channel In 2020

hey what's up life masters this is
Stefan James from project life mastery
to share with you how to start a
money-making YouTube channel so if
you're here right now and you're brand
new to YouTube you want to get started
with your channel put out videos and
attract thousands of followers and
subscribers and of course make money in
the process which by the way not that
many youtubers actually make good money
from their YouTube channel and their
videos and I'll explain why that is
a little bit later on in this video but
there are strategies and there is a path
that leads to more potential on the back
end where you can actually make a
six-figure income a seven-figure income
per year on the back end from your
YouTube channel that a lot of people
aren't doing and I want to share with
you that path I want to share you not
just how you can build your channel but
also how you can make money from it so
that you can quit your job pursue your
YouTube channel full time if you'd like
create financial freedom abundance
whatever it is I've been a youtuber now
for almost eight years so I've been at
this for a long time I started back in
early 2012 and there's a lot that I've
learned there's a lot that I learned
that works and there's also a lot that
I've learned that does not work I've
made a lot of mistakes along the way and
really the purpose of this is I want to
pay forward what I know would have
learned over the last now almost eight
years and help you get started and help
you with the mindset the mental
component because there are certain
beliefs and a mindset going into this
that can really help you know make or
break you but also I'll give you some
strategy and technique as well and the
path that I believe that can really lead
to that financial freedom and abundance
if you want to pursue that
ok I'm gonna share with you a lot about
how YouTube works now first thing I want
to mention is the fact that you're here
the fact that you're watching this the
fact that you're actually interested in
starting a YouTube channel whether or
not you actually pursue it or not I'm
not sure but I'm gonna assume that
you're here because you want to build a
YouTube channel if that's the case I
want you to know how much I respect you
I respect and I admire you so much
because you're different than most
people out there you have the courage to
want to put yourself out there in ways
that most people aren't willing to do
and I understand that is scary I've been
there I you know grew up as a very shy
person I'm naturally an introvert is
not comfortable for me I didn't grow up
being able to have this skill in the
ability to speak in front of a camera
took me a long time to get comfortable
and confident with what I do but I
understand it's scary because you're
putting yourself out there you're you're
putting yourself out there and you're
susceptible to criticism and other
people judging you based on how you look
and how you sound and what you say and
do and I remember for me when I first
started my channel I remember my friends
and family they're like what is it that
Stefan's doing you know is that really a
career can you actually make money doing
that and they kind of made fun of me a
little bit when I was starting it and
sure enough one thing that you'll find
is that results don't lie results speak
for itself
when you build your channel you start
making money from it and you actually
have thousands of viewers and reaching
millions of people around the world the
funny thing is then you go back to those
people and you know you can actually
show them they're proof and the results
of what you've been able to accomplish
and do but I know what that's like and I
just respect anyone out there that's
willing to put themselves out there in
this way but also hopefully deep down
inside I believe that you want to help
people you want to serve people the only
way you're ever successful on YouTube or
any business whatsoever
is when you get outside of yourself and
you're actually committed to serving
something greater than yourself you're
gonna create content and videos that can
hopefully influence thousands if not
millions of people and to do that we
have a responsibility to serve and to
share and help and and create content it
has value for other people there's no
value that anyone else receives from
watching your videos then obviously
they're not going to subscribe they're
not going to follow you they're not
going to want more
so youtubers content creators
influencers we're people that add value
to the world whether that's an
entertainment whether that is in
educating people and providing
opportunities for people and changing
their beliefs and their mindset and
their actions and behavior there's a lot
of influence that we have and I think
it's a beautiful thing and especially
the fact that hopefully you're someone
that wants to serve and help other
people which is really the name of the
game so with that being said let me
share with you a little bit on how to
get started on YouTube and some tips at
the beginning stage as well as some
things later on and ways that you can
make money from your YouTube channel the
first thing is
you've got to go into YouTube
understanding that it's a long-term
journey nobody starts a YouTube channel
and they put up a few videos and they
start getting views right away that's
not really how it works when you're
first starting is starting from zero
nobody knows you nobody knows your
channel you got zero subscribers zero
views you're pretty much a nobody and
you're gonna create videos initially
when you put out content and yes you're
gonna spend time doing it you're gonna
have to get over that barrier the fear
and the perfectionist mentality where
you record yourself and you watch
yourself afterwards and you're like oh
my god is that what I look like is that
what I sound like
you kind of judge yourself a little bit
it's uncomfortable I get that but you've
really got to get through that that's
the beginning stage that everybody goes
through and it's gonna make or break you
because most people they can't withstand
that initial phase and it's by the way
it's exact same thing with anything new
in your life I mean think about it any
new skill any new endeavor of your life
at the beginning you're always gonna
suck the most okay that's just the
reality of it if you're learning how to
dance and you've never danced before
you're gonna go to the dance class and
there's gonna be all these other
students there and they're much better
than you they've been at this longer
you're gonna be looking at yourself in
the mirror and you're gonna be trying to
keep up with everyone else and you're
gonna look at yourself in the mirror and
you're gonna think yourself man I suck
at this I can't get it right I can't get
it down and you know not everybody
started the same position though and the
ones that are good that you see around
you in the dance class that are actually
pretty good at this they went through
what you went through but they just
stuck with it longer so it's like that
with anything in life and really you got
to go into a understanding at the
beginning you might suck okay you might
not you might be a great speaker you
might be very charismatic you might hit
the ground running and do really well
but for most of us for most people here
it's not going to happen that fast
you're gonna have to go through a
process where you mentally and
emotionally are gonna have to conquer
some of your fears and some of that
perfectionist muckman mindset that's
keeping you stuck you're gonna have to
go through that phase I'm putting out
videos and having nobody care about them
but if you can keep at that for several
weeks or months you will eventually
break through progress at the beginning
will be slow but eventually it will
go into something that has a core
subscriber base a tribe that will
support you watch your videos like your
videos share your videos and that that
will allow you to grow so much faster so
the beginning stage things are slow it's
almost like watching the grass grow
you're planting seeds with every video
that you create okay and not right away
well those seeds blossom and sprout into
something but the more that you stick
with it the more videos that you put out
the nor doors that you knock the more
that open right the more seeds you plant
the more that will sprout and it's that
mindset you got to have going into this
is not going to a YouTube channel
expecting instant results there is no
shortcut there is no you know immediate
gratification you're really gonna get
from this okay it's a long-term journey
understand that going in now here's the
things I think can help you with the
right mindset that can support you along
this initial phase a lot of people
they're so attached to results and when
they don't see results and by the way
they judge the results based on view
subscribers and money okay those three
things people are attached to those
results when they don't see those
results they get discouraged and they
give up so instead you got it you got to
get through that phase when you're not
seeing results you've got to look at all
the other benefits that you're getting
that you're not paying attention to and
measuring here's a few of them that
you're gonna get with every video that
you put out there number one understand
every video that you record and you
publish your becoming better okay you're
becoming better you're improving your
communication skills you're improving
your confidence you're getting more
comfortable in front of the camera
you're improving your personality and
your ability to communicate which by the
way translates to every other area of
your life you'll help your relationships
your friendships your business life your
you know the job that you work with the
co-workers and everything you're gonna
benefit so much more every video that
you create you're just improving that
aspect of yourself which is a great
benefit that you've got to look at you
know for me when I look at my journey of
the last eight years now I've gotten
better with almost every video out there
I'm a better communicator and more
confident I'm a better speaker I'm able
to articulate myself so much more and
that comes over time so under
stand that you're getting a lot of
benefit from every video that you create
you know you're getting more confident
and comfortable with yourself your
self-esteem is going up the other thing
that you get is that every video that
you create your you're actually
benefiting the most from it so as an
example I create content to educate
people I talked about self development a
type of business marketing investing
money relationships health mindset all
these areas of life that I believe
matter areas of life that I focus on pay
attention to and try to grow and evolve
in my life but with every video that I
create every time I have to come up with
new distinctions and ideas and content a
new message and I put it out there and
have to communicate it I've got to
prepare my content in advance and
communicate it and that helps me it
helps me first and foremost before it
helps anyone else because it helps me be
more congruent with what I'm saying it
helps me apply that advice that I'm
giving in my videos to my own life and
it helps me integrate it at a deeper
level so that I can actually achieve
mastery so regardless of whether or not
anyone watches any of my videos I
benefit from it and that's the mindset
you got to take now the other benefit
you get to is your YouTube channel it's
kind of like a journal it's like an
online journal now I believe everybody
should journal there's so many great
benefits you know when you share your
thoughts and your ideas and you know
what happened in your life and you
capture that in a journal and then you
go back several years you know down the
road you go back to that you can see how
much you've changed you can reflect on
those times and that's one thing I love
about my youtube video my youtube
channel
even my Instagram my social media it's
like an online journal you know I think
a life worth living is worth recording
so you're recording your life and then
you go to go back and you get a look at
different aspects of your life and
that's very rewarding that's fun to be
able to do to go back and see your
growth and see how your life has changed
and how you've grown
so all those benefits you get regardless
of how much money you make how many
subscribers you have you know how much
fame you have all that sort of stuff
okay I understand that will come okay
that's the long term yes you want to
pursue it but along the way there's a
process enjoy the process understand for
every video you put out you are
benefitting from it and that mindset
sustained you through those beginning
stages to help make it enjoyable and
help you stick with it okay so that's a
little bit of the mindset now another
thing I'm gonna mention tell sheriff you
a story in a sec the perfectionist
mindset I see holds a lot of people back
a lot of people they think to start a
YouTube channel they have to be perfect
they have to look you know be the
perfect weight and look a certain way
and their English has to be perfect you
they have to have them you know the
perfect camera and the lighting and the
setup and the audio you know all of that
sort of stuff and the reality is that
doesn't matter as much as you think okay
that's like the 20% to 80% is really who
you are and your passion your energy in
your video the emotion you communicate
with and what you're sharing people will
overlook all those other things if
you're content good so a lot of people
they get caught up and the things that
don't matter that much and I understand
you know I sometimes get cut off on that
sometimes too or I just overthink things
I make it more complex than it needs to
be and it doesn't need to be most people
are not going to notice those things
that you're overly concerned about most
important thing is just take out a
camera and share share something that
can add value to someone sells else's
life share something that can make
someone's day or their life better
whether it's making them laugh making
them more motivated or inspired help
them learn something new or think about
things they never thought of before I
always try to make it as simple as
possible in my mind with every video
that I create I'm not trying to change
the world I'm not trying to impact
millions of people I'm just really just
trying to help one person if I help one
person then it was more than worth it
now I've had times where I have been a
perfectionist and I've had many
frustrating times over the years of
publishing videos I remember one time
you know I was in the South of France I
was in cons and I wanted I found this
really beautiful area right on the water
that I wanted to record a YouTube video
and so I took out all my equipment and
had my tripod had my camera you know I
had my backpack and everything and it's
such a hot day you know I mean it was I
was getting sunburns pretty much as I
was going out to this location the
location took about 30 40 minutes from
the hotel to get out to it so here I am
sweating
and you know dealing with the heat of
everything and whatnot and I finally set
everything up so my tripod and my camera
and the audio and everything and you
know usually that's a bit of a process
sometimes to get everything just right
and sure enough I did I'm ready to
record I know what I want to share and
then I find out that I forgot my battery
for my camera so here I am a come a
little bit frustrated by that I'm like
okay well I got all the way back to the
hotel that's 30 40 minutes and the heat
I like all the way back and to get the
battery and then sure enough I got to
walk all the way back to this location
that I found which was 30 or 40 minutes
again so I mean I'm just wasting you
know an hour and a half pretty much
going back and forth and when that
happens they're a little bit frustrated
you're not in that same state that you
might have been initially and so I set
everything up I record the video and I
think I did a great job at the content
and then off you know of course
afterwards I look at the video on my
computer and it's a little bit out of
focus and the audio wasn't as good
because sometimes you recorded by the
water there's more wind and the waves
and that kind of interferes with the the
microphone and whatnot and now here I'm
really frustrated because you know I
just spent all this time to record these
videos and now I'm like man it's just
not the way that I thought it would be
it didn't look the way you know I here I
thought in this my mind I've got this
beautiful environment and background
it's gonna look great and you know what
I decided to do in those moments you
know I looked at it and said you know
what does this really matter as much as
I think it does and I asked myself
listen would this help one person and
for me the answer was yes so I decided
to put the video anyway anyways and
guess what a lot of people benefited
from that video and many others were I
again my audio wasn't just right it was
a little bit out of focus the lighting
wasn't the best but again most people
are gonna overlook that yes there'll
always be a small percent of people that
complained right there's always people
like that they'll always look for
something to complain about
but a lot of people again it's the
content the message of what you're
sharing and so I really learned from
those experiences that it's not as much
as you think we get so caught up really
in ourselves we over obsess about how we
look and how we sound and these things
that most people don't care about so yes
you want to get better with every video
you want to improve and you will improve
over time but at the same time don't be
so hard on yourself
everything being perfect when I first
started my youtube channel I just had
this little camera a little camera that
I put on a stack of books and I didn't
have a tripod didn't have a microphone
didn't have any lighting or anything
like that and I just started from there
and then eventually I bought a nice
camera I bought the Panasonic sorry the
Panasonic gh4 is a DSLR camera that I'm
recording this wall on right now excuse
me and then you know I just got better
and I got you know it took me many years
really before I could really figure out
how to really use my camera and I still
there's many things and parts of it that
I don't know how to use but it's the
mindset of progress not perfection that
I think can really help you and and one
thing that also helps me with my videos
too is I just imagine like I'm talking
to a friend okay I imagine on the other
side of this camera I'm just talking to
a friend so I'm not looking to put on a
show or performance I'm looking just to
share and communicate from my heart
communicate to someone that might be
like me that's looking to get started or
looking you know to improve their life
and I try to simplify that as much as I
can the way that I communicate because
otherwise if I over worried about what
I'm going to say or exactly how I say it
then I get caught up in my head and that
that prevents me from really being able
to serve and being able to communicate
and get through videos so I try to
simplify it as much as I possibly can so
those are some mental components for you
okay the other piece I want to share
with you is deciding on the niche or the
topic or there's onra that you want to
build your youtube channel around this
is really important especially if you
want to make money from your channel now
you've got to think about okay a lot of
people here when they create a video or
a channel most often people they're like
you know I just want to talk about
whatever I want to talk about my day
I want to vlog the problem with that
approach though is that very few people
are successful as vloggers not unless
you're very good-looking not unless you
have an incredible lifestyle a lot of
wealth and you're doing all these crazy
things that are very entertaining for
people not unless you have an incredible
personality you're very entertaining
you're very charismatic for most people
it's very challenging to do that unless
you have you have a lot of those at
those those kind of things going on for
you
for most people instead the better way
to start a channel is identified that
YouTube is a search engine people go to
YouTube they search for keyword phrases
they're looking for content that can
help them that can help solve their
problems and they're searching for
topics and you want to think and send a
nod about yourself but what are people
searching for that I can create content
on so that when they search in YouTube
they can find my video and they can
benefit from it so that I can rank my
video in the search results they can
find it click on it view it if they
enjoy it they can subscribe they can
follow for more videos like that that's
how most people need to get started with
their YouTube channel it's not looking
at like what you want to do it's looking
at what if people wants and what is like
a niche or topic that you have some
knowledge on or experience in or you
have problems that you've solved in your
life that you can help other people
solve or maybe what's your interest or
passion or maybe what are you were like
interested in growing and learning
yourself that as you learn and grow like
if it's self development you love
learning self development the things you
learn you can then share and help other
people with on your YouTube channel or
you can share your journey in your
progress in different areas of your life
you know really thinking about that and
planning what you want your channel to
be and what topic that you want to
create content on is really important
and then once you decide on what that
niche is then doing research to see what
other people are doing so whenever you
decide what your niche is you should
always look to see are there other
people that are doing this are there
other videos on these topics if yes
that's a good thing that means you can
learn from them and you can get idea of
the potential and the demand there the
mistake people make is they just put out
videos there's no direction to it
there's no strategy behind it they just
think if I put out videos people will
find it and watch it and benefit from it
that's not the case you've got to have a
plan you've got to be strategic about
your channel the direction of it and
every video that you're gonna create and
publish that's how you're going to get
ahead and succeed so knowing the niche
of what you want to build your channel
around is important now a lot of people
they go a little bit too broad on their
YouTube channel a mistake that I kind of
made I kind of knew that going in of
course I decided project life mastery by
the way to talk about all areas of life
because that's my
and I knew that if I just focus on
fitness which I was doing a fitness
competition in 2012 and that's what I
was going to start my channel around
I knew that eight years later I'd be
bored of fitness I would want to talk
about it that much more
so I started more broad but here's the
key if you start broad like self
development you might want to experiment
with different types of videos okay put
up videos on habits goal-setting rituals
beliefs mindset motivation etc you see
what people resonate with which are the
ones people find and follow and you
build an audience from that and then
from there you kind of narrow in your
content to serve that audience versus
always going broad so at a certain point
you've got to narrow things down you
either start narrow really let's say
focusing just on habits and helping
people with habits or helping people
with addiction or helping people with
mental health or anxiety you really
focus on serving that that niche okay
and then from there you can branch out
and talk about other subjects or you
kind of go abroad you see what people
resonate with and then you go deeper on
that for me a lot of the niches that I
talk about for example publishing books
on Amazon Amazon FBA affiliate marketing
so those are things that I put out
videos on and people resonated with and
they wanted more videos from me on that
and so for me I have different segments
of my channel that I try to cater to and
serve and then every once in a while I
throw a video on relationships or on
health these other top topics that fit
within project life mastery but it's not
my core audience that I'm really just
trying to serve them and then throw in
some other videos here and there so
really getting clear on your niche going
narrow with it really is the key if not
starting broader than going narrow
that's a really important thing so that
you're not all over the place and you
can really be focused in with your
channel and really building it so your
nisha is really important now your niche
is also important in terms of making
money because there are some niches and
topics that you create videos on that
will make you more money than others so
let's talk about this for a sec how to
make money so the first way and the the
default way for everybody is with
YouTube ads so this is when you have a
Google Adsense account linked to your
YouTube channel
and what happens is you you already know
this but every video that you watch if
they turn on monetization there's ads
that happen pre-roll right before you
watch the video or there's ads you're
gonna have to hit the video as well and
the way that youtubers make money is
every time someone watches the ad or
depending how long they watch it if they
click on the ad the youtuber makes money
from that now how much money they make
though from their videos is dependent on
the how many views that it gets but more
importantly than that is how many
advertisers are actually advertising on
that YouTube video for that topic so for
example let's say you have a YouTube
channel and your YouTube channels you
know it's for kids you know maybe you're
talking entertaining kids on your
YouTube channel let's say okay there's
going to be advertisers that have
products and services that can benefit
your audience they want to pay YouTube
to advertise on your YouTube channel and
they'll don't you know pay for every ad
that's run and YouTube makes money from
that and you make money from that but
that that topic okay that market
advertisers might not pay that much for
that versus instead there's other niches
like let's let's say real estate or
investing where advertisers will spend a
lot a lot more money to get in front of
those videos because they can make more
money from their ads on those videos
than they will from other topics so
every niche is different for me the
videos that I talked about with business
or marketing always make more money on
the ads than the ones that I do more
related to self-development so the
business ones there's more advertisers
there one's a spend and invest more
money to get in front of those videos
than other ones so that also matters a
lot because there's some topics that you
want to do videos on there might not be
as much potential for you to make money
from them as other ones so that's
another thing you want to look at you
might want to consider now here's the
other piece in terms of how you make
money really the money you make from
your ads is really the smallest amount
of what you're gonna make that's that's
really that's like the low-hanging fruit
in my opinion but the real potential is
actually outside of YouTube now let me
show you a little bit how YouTube works
YouTube they want people to stay on you
- when you watch this video well YouTube
wants is they want you to stay on
YouTube they want you to after this
video they want you to watch another one
of my videos or someone else's video the
more time that you or anyone else spends
on YouTube the more money that YouTube
can make because the more videos that
you watch the more ads that you're gonna
watch the more money that YouTube's
gonna make from that so that's what
YouTube wants they don't want you to
watch this video and then leave YouTube
they don't want you to click on a link
in my description they don't want you to
go to my website they don't want you to
leave YouTube to follow me on Instagram
they don't want that because they don't
make money from that but the real
potential and how you and I can make
money is actually taking people away
from YouTube so when you for example
what you'd want to do is you want to
think when you attract an audience of
people in a certain market how can you
serve them beyond YouTube
for me I try to serve people as much as
I can on YouTube but I also know that I
can I'm limited in how much I can help
you on YouTube I can serve you and other
people a lot more let's say that wanna
build an online business by having you
you know sending you to my course or
like a free video training that I have
or an e-book or a book that I published
or a product that I'm selling on Amazon
or something that I can recommend
there's other things that I can serve
and help you a lot more rather than just
having you watch more YouTube videos
because more YouTube videos isn't
necessarily in your best interest in a
lot of cases it leads to analysis
paralysis information overload people
rarely take action just by watching free
videos but I know from my experience
that I have courses and resources and
trainings and books and things that can
help you a lot further so by creating
that the back end where either I sell my
own product whether it's on Amazon or
Shopify whether I have my own book
published that I sell on Amazon or
whether I have a course that can help
you or an event or coaching service or
software or tool or resources I can
recommend to you as an affiliate
marketer that's really how I can make
more money but also be able to serve my
audience more as well so that's really
the biggest potential is creating a back
end finding out how you can further
serve your followers and subscribers
creating that for them
and then directing them away from your
video to purchase something additional
purchase something extra now because
YouTube doesn't like this they punish
you a little bit okay they will get less
views because of that YouTube will
reward you more when they watch someone
watches the video and they watch more
videos that's what YouTube wants
so they actually rank your videos more
from that they promote your videos more
because of that and that's why for
example my videos or a channel like mine
will never make us that will never get
as many views as a channel that doesn't
have links in their description then a
channel that is not trying to take
people off of YouTube and just trying to
get them to watch more and more videos
those channels do really well on YouTube
and they get way more views for me I'm

dependent on YouTube that way I can

other resources and courses and books
