Self Publishing For Positioning And To Drive Highly Targeted Website Traffic

thank you
hey miles Becker here and in this video
we're gonna talk about self-publishing
and specifically we're gonna talk about
self publishing in to specific kind of
areas and in to ways that it can
massively benefit your life in your
business number one is positioning and
number two is traffic so what do I mean
by positioning in traffic well first of
all if you are building a brand a
personal brand your goal needs to be to
position yourself as the expert within
your specific niche now you can be one
of several experts you know there's room
for more than one at the top but you
really want to put yourself out there as
a thought leader and what new thought
leaders do they write books and they
have books some have even said that a
book is the new business card and until
you have a book you're really not
proving yourself as an advanced
professional in your kind of industry
the other is traffic now web traffic
from books and Kindle books is actually
pretty small it's not a large volume of
traffic but what it is is it's really
highly targeted traffic it's people who
have already been indoctrinated by your
ideas and it can be some of the highest
quality traffic that you can actually
connect with so having a book on Amazon
or on Kindle or on bookshelves can do
two major things for you
number one it sets you up as the expert
on the topic that you're talking about
and number two when someone reads that
book like man I really need like I love
everything they're talking about this
book I want them to do this for me
they're kind of instinct is to call you
so if you're selling consulting services
if you're selling any of these kinds of
high-dollar services a book is an
absolute fantastic front and marketing
piece that will allow you to connect
with people who are looking for they're
solving the problems you happen to be
able to solve their problem the book
explains how it works you end with a
call to action that says if you'd like
help with this contact me here or
subscribe to my list for this free thing
here and they make it into your funnel
so how challenging is it to publish a
book in this day and age it's incredibly
simple I've got a few books here that
I'm going to show you that I've actually
taken part of helping publish or market
and these are all self-published through
what's called create space and create
space is actually owned by Amazon and
this is my wife's book and you'll see
that we actually made this book in
Spanish as well to target the Spanish
market and create spaces owned by Amazon
and it allows you to simply upload a PDF
that's properly formatted and instantly
create a book to get these book layouts
done you can literally start with just
writing a word document and from there
you're able to outsource the editing the
layout the book cover design essentially
every single step in the process other I
mean you can even outsource the writing
of the book if you want to hire a
ghostwriter so I'm going to take your
ideas your outline your kind of plan or
your system and turn it into a book
you can even outsource the process of
writing the book now those are the print
books right and the print books are you
know print books are kind of a big
old-school world symbol of look what I
did right I took the time to write this
book to accomplish to get all this
content out I'm obviously the expert but
there's another really cool side of
Amazon and publishing and that is this
little device right here because in this
day and age millions and millions of
people have Kindles and what do people
do when they get Kindles they look for
books to buy they look for books to get
on their Kindles where do they go they
go to amazon.com amazon.com is the
largest bookseller in the world by far
and Kindles actually sell they sell more
Kindle books than they do print books so
the Kindle book is actually a great
revenue generation system when you get a
high ranking Kindle book which is not
that difficult to do in this day and age
so what I recommend let's give some
basic kind of outlines for numbers and
stats and ideas about how to write a
book a minimum of twenty thousand words
I really think thirty to forty thousand
word books are great we live in a day
and age when people have a very short
attention span the executive who wants
to solve the problem that you can solve
they don't want to spend two weeks
reading your book they'd like to lay
down in a hammock on a beach on a
Saturday and they'd like to
soon the whole book to get your big plan
your idea your philosophy into their
head it'll get them moving and they'll
be able to kind of consume it in one or
two quick settings so shorter books are
fine
I think 20,000 words is the bare minimum
I would recommend but really going up to
30 and 40,000 words now and just to let
you know I showed you like four
different books here I've published or
helped published about nine to ten books
pretty much every single one of those
has reached the bestseller status in its
different category on Amazon and that's
really what we're after so we've talked
about the book length right 20,000 words
when you upload a Kindle book so the
Kindle book is a mobi format and when
you find somebody to do your layout to
get you the PDF for CreateSpace they'll
also be able to generate a kindle
version that will format for the
different sized Kindles and it'll make
the links from the the kind of table of
contents to your internal content it'll
make all of that work really smoothly on
a Kindle so you need a mobile format and
a PDF format on the book I like to price
kindle books at either $2.99 or $3.99
now the reason is at $2.99 you get a 70%
royalty which means you'll make a little
over $2 on a $2.99 book sale on 399
you'll make about 280 to $3.00 per book
with that 70% royalty if you go below
$2.99 in price you can only get a 30%
royalty if you go above $9.99 in price
on a Kindle you're only able to get a
30% royalty so you really want to make
sure you get the 70% royalties and I
think that the 299 and 399 price point
work especially well on Amazon because
Amazon's algorithm is designed to show
lower priced products first so you're
able to kind of game the system a little
bit by having a lower price than your
competitors but this doesn't mean you're
putting out a cheap book it just means
you're lowering the barrier of entry for
your potential customers so they can
come get your information they can learn
who you are and they can get to know
your ideas without investing too much
time or money because in this day and
age like we said everybody's busy we
have short attention spans we went in we
want quick we want to get the ideas and
move on
to the next so that's really the pricing
on the print books we do generally run
our print books about fourteen to
nineteen dollars the goal of that is to
position them really to push people to
the Kindle book in every single book you
need to have a list building component
you need to be linking people from
inside of your content giving them more
right in our books so we have the books
on angels and we offer a free angel
message and it's a simple page in the
back if you like this book if you like
these messages and you'd like an audio
version go to this web address and you
can get a free audio angel message and
then they go to the website they opt-in
and at that point they're in our funnel
so we do get royalties from the books
and the royalties are nice its long-term
royalties it's one of the only actual
passive income streams that you can kind
of generate over time takes a lot of
effort to put a book out but really we
look at the books as more I would say
more of a like a lead generation system
or kind of a loss leader we're not
looking to make money on them per se
we're really looking to help people get
our books in their hands to kind of
advanced tricks that you can do number
one is going forever free on Amazon now
Amazon doesn't let you price your book
at zero but what you can do is you could
make a smashwords version of your book
at free you put it on Amazon for $2.99
and then you email Amazon's support
through the author central and you let
them know hey look my books free over
here they will price match your book and
you'll be forever free because again
when people get these fancy Kindle
devices they want to load it up right
you don't wanna get a Kindle and put one
book on it read one book the user
behavior of these devices is to go get
dozens and dozens of books and they turn
it into a kind of a pseudo digital
library that they get to carry around
with them and not everybody wants to go
spend 30 40 50 60 dollars on books
so they'll browse through the free books
and that's where they could find your
forever free book we have one forever
free book right now that it's it's
permanently in the number one or number
two spot it bounces between those two
for our main category niche and what
that book is doing is it's connecting us
with literally thousands upon
thousands of visitors who are interested
in our niche interested in our messages
it then promotes our paid books it also
promotes our email list so it's a great
front-end system took a lot of time and
effort to put it out there and a lot of
people would think you know hey if I'm
gonna put this much time and effort into
my book I want to make money from the
book but again we're good entrepreneurs
who understand the value of delaying
gratification and really it's that
delayed gratification of here's the book
here's how you can experience our
content here's how you can get to know
us with zero risk on your end and then
the right people who read that book and
resonate with our messaging go deeper
into our funnel and they find our
information products which are usually
90 to 95 percent not royalties but
margins on those kinds of products
because digital products are so
inexpensive the second trick is when you
finish your book you want to launch it
at a paid price I don't recommend using
Kindles or KD PS which is the Kindle
digital digital publishing system I
don't recommend using their free
promotion system they have something
called a countdown system and you can
run a countdown promotion which allows
you to lower the price of your book down
to 99 cents for five days every three
months and you're able to get it down to
that $0.99 mark and still earn 70%
royalties on it now the goal here is not
actually to earn royalties the goal here
is to bump yourself up in their
algorithm because a 99 cent book will
show up above a $2.99 book if all other
things are equal now when you're
launching your book you get it up you
get it online you set it for 99 cents to
start then you reach out to friends and
family members and you want to get five
five-star reviews on your book
immediately you want to have as many
people you probably reach out to 10 to
20 people say hey could you do me a
favor
can you buy this book and leave me an
honest review I'm really shooting to get
five five-star reviews before I actually
launch the book to the public what this
is gonna do is two things number one it
pushes you up in their algorithm because
you
have some user feedback you have some
five-star ratings you have some good
comments from verified purchasers these
are not people on free this is not
running a free promotion and getting a
free comment from someone this is a paid
customer who's a verified purchase who
leaves you a positive review on your
book it's also going to cushion you from
the potential of internet trolls or
haters or talkers or whatever you
want to call them because they're out
there right there are people who they
will never leave a positive review but
the moment something strikes and is
wrong they are quick to run a one-star
review on it you'll see them on Yelp
you'll see them on YouTube you'll see
them on Amazon you want to protect
yourself against that because if your
first review is negative two things can
happen
number one it makes it that much more
difficult to get back into a four star
plus rating which is where the trigger
of their algorithm is to rank you higher
in the algorithm rank you higher in the
search results
number two is really it kind of
positions you to have that social proof
already built in and the odds and
likelihood of someone leaving you a
negative review after five people I've
already left positive reviews goes down
significantly so somebody who maybe was
gonna review you is a one-star might
think wow you know these other people
really liked it
maybe it's just something about me maybe
I don't resonate I'll leave them a three
or a four star review so if you have
five five-star reviews and you get one
one-star review it's not even unlocking
you down it's not gonna knock you down
below a four star if you have one four
star review and then you get a another
review that's a five star you're maybe
sitting it like the two and a half range
then you get another five star and
you're now at like the 3 range and it
becomes a challenge to kind of get over
that hump and get yourself back up into
the high four and five star reviews with
that said last tip last word of advice
don't buy into the reviews too much
people say crazy things you're bound to
get haters showing up you're bound to
get trolls showing up at some point look
at this is a good thing I know that
sounds odd but look at that as a good
thing and it means you're reaching so
many people that you finally reach some
people who don't love you and that's
perfect because your book should be
polarizing a little bit people who don't
love your content
love your niche they don't need to
opt-in to your list they don't need to
go down your funnel any deeper so the
book is a sorting mechanism and some
people are just gonna leave you bad
reviews because they had a bad day and
they want to blow off some steam and
they want to yell and scream and they
can't so they just go to Amazon and you
happen to be the last book they bought
and Amazon happens to recommend they
leave you review and boom you kind of
take the brute force it's not personal
it's nothing to dwell on don't even look
at reviews once you get over the five
star review start writing your next book
there's nothing that sells your first
book like your second book so get your
author central set up in rolling KDP run
the countdown programs the countdown
promotional programs run those down at
$0.99 for five days if you don't know
what I'm talking about well get into the
KDP get into Kindle publishing and it
all makes sense and ultimately remember
that this book is not supposed to be a
profit Center for your business it's
supposed to be a front front front end
of your funnel and it's something
that'll allow you to attract people who
are interested in your topic they'll get
to know you they'll get to know your
story they'll get to know your ideas and
it will automatically filter them into
your email list and your funnel and
people who come from Kindle and people
who come from your print books and they
actually go into your funnel they have
such a higher likelihood of purchasing
they've already bought content from you
before they already trusted you enough
on Amazon to buy your book so the odds
are when you offer them an information
product a consulting session etcetera
they're going to be excited for the
opportunity to buy more from you because
they've already had a positive
experience with your content so if
you're not publishing books yet on
Kindle if you're not publishing yet on
print on create space get started last
thing there's people out there selling
this idea that all you got to do is
write a hundred books and make make 5
dollars a day from these books and
you're making 500 book you're making 500
bucks a day this is such a flawed idea
only publish high quality content
don't try to spam Amazon you can get
your account banned you're gonna fill up
the Kindle and the Amazon store with
rubbish and just be better than that
have some integrity write a great book
write the best book you can
move on to the second book and know that
when you want to update your books with
new chapters is really easy to do you
just upload a new PDF you just upload a
new mobi file and instantly Amazon will
replace the old book with the new book
so if you're not publishing yet I highly
recommended it we've published our first
book in my goodness 2012 we published
our most recent book last year we have
another book that's ready to get
published and we've literally had 25 30
40 thousand books purchased these are
not free book giveaways like some people
like to do that don't help you in the
algorithm these are actual paid books
and we've sent about eight nine books to
the number one spot on Amazon and all
that means is that we're connecting with
people interested in our topic it's a
great front of the funnel for us so
