welcome this is Miles Beckler and you
are on the Miles Dekker podcast today I
have a guest my beautiful wife Melanie
yay welcome are you here thank you so
happy to have you so we don't really
have a topic for this episode yet but I
figured we would just start recording
and see what comes out of it how do you
think about that yeah that sounds good I
figure we can't go wrong we're actually
sitting out in the forest we're at
Panther Creek or Panther Meadows or
something with Panther it's beautiful
there's just like pine trees and some
other type of tree so when you look I'm
going to get just straight into it and
yeah great setting it's beautiful here
so when you first kind of got inspired
to start building your website what
where did that inspiration come from
where did the the willingness to leap
into the unknown where did that actually
come from wow that's an interesting
question
I guess well I think there is kind of
like two-sided really because on one
side of the coin I was just really
interested in the metaphysical niche in
channeling non-physical beings and when
I learned to channel my channeling
teacher was kind of like a website is
where it's at and like recommended a
I'm really passionate about then on the
other side you were kind of like she's
right a website's
totally where it's at with the caveat of
publish a lot and published consistency
and so I guess I believed you and just
started started publishing started
putting it out there and then what
happened was people were actually
finding it and I started getting
positive feedback and not just like
ignited the fire even further but I
guess underneath all of that was always
this deeper desire to be able to earn an
income outside of a corporation and
side of a J OB and so kind of like the
the idea and belief that that would be
possible through a website I think is
really a big part of the fire there
that's awesome and I through an
extremely difficult pitch right out of
the gate so well played I'm glad I got a
I know like intro for audience not only
my wife has a website I was like okay
let's do deep like what is the Fendi
like why yeah why do that what inner
motivation yeah and I think you tapped
onto something and like I definitely had
some experience making money online
before we met and I understood content
marketing so that's kind of basically
what I what I feel like I taught and I
think the one thing that you didn't
mention that I really feel was key was
like keyword research in the process is
learning how to structure the content in
a way that that audience
what's up they were looking for but you
took it to that but that's not that
wasn't like you asked like what ignited
totally higher lien which wasn't keyword
research it was more like 100 percent on
at this point keyword research has
absolutely been been paramount for
focusing the content in a way that
people can find it and that's all I was
trying to do is give like a upgrade to
the listener so moving forward you
really took another level you took the
content to another level by adding on
social media and you're really good at
social media marketing where did you
like you knew Facebook was the hit back
back back in the day before it was
released beyond 12 colleges right like
and now on Instagram Pinterest like
you've always tracked really well like
I've tracked search engines really well
but you've tracked social media and
you've dominated it so well how does it
like how do you even get that like your
brain works in that way so what's your
philosophy or theory on what makes
social media work and and what is
something that the listener could do to
really kind of like yeah and I think
maybe I have a bit of just like what
that innate advantage in that my my
intro to the internet really was through
social media so like I remember like in
in middle school I had
my allocation of time on the Internet
and it was like cool let me like get on
AOL messenger and like chat with my
friends so that was really like my first
social media experience was BAM okay
let's connect with other people through
this platform then that evolved to
myspace which I was like into a little
bit and then not evolved into Facebook
when I was in college was when Facebook
was like college only and again it was
really for me just about connecting with
other people so then when I realized
like okay social media is this Avenue
for promoting my blog posts and meeting
people around my content I looked at it
through the lens of the whole purpose of
social media is to connect with other
people so I think I never really started
out in a spammy way I started just
trying to connect with more people okay
how do I connect with a lot of people
through Facebook through social media
relying on building those connections
and I think I'm part of how you really
connect with people on social media is
giving value so I made it a priority to
and it has evolved and how I give value
on social media probably started with
like inspiring quotes and thoughts and
pictures and and has evolved beyond that
and then I think Gary V's like Jab Jab
Jab right hook is is a good way of
looking at it of like and I think it's
interesting I heard him say not too long
ago that he thought about retitling that
book to be like give give give ask which
I really like that a lot better because
I don't see myself as fighting people on
social media um so like so it is like
give give give ask and my ask at this
point is most of the time giving more
asking them to go to my web site and
read an article and Facebook especially
has evolved so much at this point that I
mean I've heard people say like don't
even put up paid
product at all unless you plan to boost
it so like don't rely on putting up paid
paid offers on organic at all at this
point
yeah like Facebook really being an
avenue for giving and then use your
Facebook ads to direct them to your
offer just the data I mean I look a lot
of our data and whenever we try to link
people out from Facebook they're just
killing the reach and if you do that
long enough they kill kind of like the
overall reach on the page Facebook has
evolved so much like the the golden days
of organic Facebook traffic is is over
and that's okay because the Facebook
page works really well because how how
efficient the targeting is and that's
kind of a fun I kind of like I love
playing on that side and I don't think
Facebook organic is entirely dead it's
just harder to get reach and if you do
want to do Facebook organic and you're
trying to cultivate Facebook organic
like Facebook Alive is still the best
way to get reach right now absolutely
and in groups Facebook's and any groups
to face looks really kind of putting a
lot of energy towards cultivating the
community aspect of it I think that's
really cool I one thing I've seen that
you've always seemed to understand is
like you know Facebook is like the
coffee shop Facebook is like this common
meeting ground it's like the bar it's
like it just a bunch of people like
doing a bunch of nothing talking about a
bunch of nothing and you got to approach
it from like hey have you heard about
this really cool thing that's going on
over here check it out and like that
kind of conversation works versus like
by boy thing yeah boy thing look at my
things like some people approach social
media so aggressively and it's just like
yeah like a train wreck in slow motion
join join the conversation and even like
you know you mentioned the difference of
like hey have you heard about this
really cool thing versus buy my thing
like leading with hey have you heard
about this really cool thing is probably
too aggressive of a way to start anyway
like that just reminded me of like
walking down the street in Phuket and
the guy on the scooter riding up like
hey buddy good party tonight you from
Aussie mate like rather than like hey
what are you guys doing like where are
you from like if you lead with the pitch
it just feels off and it doesn't feel
natural like be a real person join the
converse
and then after you've built up rapport
then you can like hey I wrote this
article check it out yeah and I think
it's cool that your ask is literally
like ask them to go visit your website
and get more obviously we've kind of
like optimized the website we've got to
pop up for the opt-in I've got
retargeting pixels I mark it to people
who visit our website so that's it's
it's cool that you've made it so clear
that the actual action you want them to
take is simply to go get more free stuff
on a different platform which is one
that we own
because once we own it we give you the
pop-up so we can have our ads we could
have other things around the content and
again I think some people just try to go
straight in the funnel they try to just
stay they like they throw haymakers to
use the jab jab jab right hook and
everyone can see those haymakers from a
mile away really cool answer so we're
what are you most excited about it's
what July 2017 on this recording what
are you most excited about in the world
of social media right now like what
what's like yeah this is kind of
clicking going yeah good question what
am i excited about in in social media
well what's working another way what's
what's working really well right now is
another okay amazing that probably
what's what's working the best as far as
just like straight up driving traffic is
Pinterest yeah which is funny cuz like I
don't like I'm not like excited about
Pinterest like I don't I personally
don't really like use Pinterest that
much I think and a lot of people who I
know who use Pinterest a lot like use it
for like let me build this board of how
I'm going to decorate my kitchen
co-owners how do it like this wardrobe I
want and I think me like by nature being
a minimalist like I don't like build
these collections of things I want to
buy that was conscious is kind of fun
and I've used it like I have like for my
personal use have a board of like
inspiring images or like places I want
to travel but like personally I kind of
enjoy Instagram better it just I feel
like I've been able to connect with a
few
industry leaders and connect with them
like on a one-to-one way and that's like
more through Instagram that's a really
powerful point and to explain that
so you've connected with some industry
leaders in a one-to-one way through
Instagram like how you not say who it is
but like paint a little more really just
like so people people who are sort of
like in the niche or you know like one
big astrologer who have have fairly
large audiences or even not just people
who are influential and kind of like
thought leaders I feel in in the
metaphysical arena the Ascension is
really what I'm most passionate about
right my space so I guess how did I like
cultivate these like I guess out the
point I would call them like micro
relationships it's just like following
them and then I've really cut down the
number of people I'm following on
Instagram so I then if I open Instagram
I see their posts and I'll comment on
them like them if they put up stories
comment on them and then I've just done
this a little and then notice that they
have started commenting on my stuff and
so there's this back and forth
commenting and then the direct messaging
as well just like a few little
conversations here and there so at this
point like I haven't like cultivated
like super deep relationships with
Instagram though I can see them continue
to evolve just the yeah so like the
direct messaging but but naughty it's
more just like the whole experience like
actually I'm just actually a real user
on Instagram and so I post real pictures
and my insights and then I comment on
other people stuff one thing I think
Instagram is done really well I think
this is huge where you're talking about
so I think there's so much potential
here Gary Vee talks about a lot and one
thing Instagram did really well is they
figured out a way to make it really
difficult to spam Instagram because
marketers ruin everything and the fact
that you can't put a URL in the post
makes it like then you got a link in bio
it's just not great for direct response
marketers it's good but what I think
happened is there's very little noise
there and
there's so much noise on Facebook I mean
so personally like I'm kind of still
just growing my Instagram with with some
awesome coaching and help but like I
have people connecting with me I have
some little kind of like DMS I noticed
DMS more I respond to people a little
bit more on Facebook
I'm spammed out I have three hundred
four hundred comet requests light and I
just I can't keep up with it and most of
the time is people are just trying to
get stuff and on Instagram it's people
like whoa that's really cool like it's
it's almost like there's less noise
there which means that it's easier to
kind of stand out from the crowd you
comment on a few things and like okay
who is this girl - go look they can kind
of get an idea of who you are and it's I
think it's a great relationship building
platform right now the other thing I
like about Instagram just generally more
than Facebook is like it's just simple
like I can just like put out content and
then if people like it they follow me
whereas like so I guess it's more like
an Instagram account is more like a fan
page versus like a Facebook profile
where then like requests friends and now
Facebook added follow but I still get a
bunch of friend requests from people I
don't know and so so Instagram is like I
just put out the angelic inspiration and
nature and stuff that I like and then
people can follow and comment and like I
think you know like I I I'm actually
running my Instagram account and I
noticed people who like every post or
who comment on every post and so I think
if you are trying to cultivate a
relationship with an influencer on
Instagram that that's how like not even
necessarily jumping directly to the like
DM hey bro I really love all your posts
though the but but I want to send you a
t-shirt or something like going over it
up first go in softer yeah join the
conversation Jab Jab Jab right like join
the conversation before going for the
hook even if your hook is trying to send
them something for free in hopes that
they put the put a picture of it
yeah now totally that influencer like
wear my sunglasses in your post bro it's
like a little too much - yeah I'm also
still excited about YouTube which is a
kind of social media yeah yeah it's a
cool blend of social media and search
engine it's got a little bit of both
on the comments I literally noticed
people they disappear they pop back in
the comments and it's really fun to kind
of have that connection and like little
inside jokes with different commenters
and it's just it's so powerful and I
think I think you really summed it up in
a few different ways instead of a few
different times because like looking
back when we had extreme growth rate in
the Facebook fan page and our fan page
your fan page is sitting at like 900
15,000 likes or something you were
running it you were aggressively running
it you were engaged every time we've
been on a platform when you've gone full
in full-on and turned it into a major
traffic contribution you were running it
every time we go to try to automate it
to outsource it and to kind of like ease
off that throttle the numbers change
have you notice that as well and I try
to automate it more get get the team
involved yeah the numbers just change
and that's it that's okay it's also
algorithms I think our timing on some of
those moves have been in alignment with
algorithms when when other updates are
happening but um oh can I change my
answer about what I'm most excited in
social media of course it just kind of
hit me like the the social media network
that I'm most excited about right now is
totally old school and it's email emails
like the original social network Bing
you've got mail and I think I'm
approaching email now just in kind of
how I was talking about like joining the
conversation so I email my list like
like they're friends and I try to give
them value and I keep them up to date on
what I'm doing and what I'm inspired
about and then I let them know when I
have new courses or meditations or
products and so totally email I like
email I think it is the most direct way
to drive traffic to my site and I think
it's really powerful for cultivating a
release a one-to-one relationship that's
actually one
too many yeah I mean if you look at the
data that that is the engine of the
business of our cash flow but at the
same time you know we've seen so many
people say thank you to marketing emails
and like the way you tell stories and
the way you share about things it it
really means a lot to people and there
is a lot of that feeling like wow she
wrote this just for me and it went out
to ninety thousand hundred thousand
people yeah I think I'm treating email
more like a social network than like get
my monthly newsletter and then that's
dead no nobody wants you too much you
know but people still do that and and it
doesn't like you might drive traffic but
you're not cultivating that relationship
which i think is the real of real we're
in growing an audience and a personal
brand and online business it's all about
relationships and even even great
companies right like you feel like you
have a relationship in some interesting
way with said company that's how people
brand themselves to products and
companies and brands I think you're
right and I think you know it was a
couple of years ago when you took that
first big challenge to really step up
your email marketing and it was kind of
like this mental like oh but aren't
people gonna unsubscribe if I mail like
almost every day and like there was like
there was fear around it and like the
results have been amazing it's been like
positive results for you and most people
love getting them and people are bored
people like their inbox is full like
spammy go get this do this for me do
this for me and then you come into their
inbox and you give them value and you
give them positivity and excitement and
boy it's it sure has me emailing my
little budding list more often and
trying to be in a much more kind of like
I when I sit down an email it's like I'm
reaching out to a friend like hey just
got this video it's good as you gather
this like I don't ask I rarely ask I do
have a couple of ask emails but it's
it's so much more about give give give
give give give give and like magic
happens when you approach social media
even whatever it is like when you
approach from that true core sense of
like I'm here to give a lot of value and
really become one of those trusted
advisers and they're in boxer and their
Facebook feed or in an Instagram and
when you get to that point authentically
man doors open yeah I think that's true
in in any aspect of what you're doing
online like even in the blogging or
content marketing arena like it's not
like I didn't start off like let me
write a blog post to be ordered in order
to put a call to action at the end like
and even now if I have a call to action
at the end of my blog post it's just
because it fits but the entire blog the
goal is just to like give value and help
people and communicate through writing
and to push an occasional competitor off
of the search engines because you do
like dominating the top of the search
engines yeah it it's a game to me in
that regard and it's awesome that my
site has a bit of authority at this
point and so like I love I you mentioned
before that I integrated using keyword
research very early and that has
definitely been huge in why my why my
blog is an authority site and gets so
much traffic because I'm like oh I want
to blog about how beneficial it is to
spend time in the forest let me see what
do people search for okay Forest Therapy
I just learned today that like force
bathing is apparently a thing I'm
definitely going to go look like do
people search for force bathing or do
they search for like nature recharge and
then I would write my article with those
terms so it's not like I let keyword
research choose what I want to write
about necessarily like I choose what I
want to write about what my heart calls
to me to write about what I feel
inspired about let my inspiration read
but then I cross-reference that against
keyword research to make sure I'm using
the right language or if absolutely no
one searches the idea I had maybe I'll
like pivoted or focus it in another area
and then that whole kind of like give
people what they think they want and
then sneak in what they actually mean
but I try to like focus things in terms
of what people are actually searching
for just along those lines of giving
value like slowly you know if you go
into keyword research and you see that
3,000 people a month are searching for
how to blame
and you know there's no great content
answering that question and you go be
the person to be of service to go create
the killer piece of content that helps
them solve that problem like it's a win
win win all the way around and Google
notices that you put together a great
piece of content and you end up breaking
so real quick for fun like when you
identify a keyword phrase that has like
low to medium competition and you write
like an awesome blog post because all
your blog posts are awesome how long
does it take you to rank sometimes like
what's a good example you know it I like
over night for sure but the other day I
wrote this blog post and with I chat I
didn't check immediately but I checked
like three hours later and it was in the
number six spot for the keywords that I
had chosen and it was like whoa that's
cool and then I looked the next morning
and it was the number three spot and it
was kind of sticking around three so I
think what I'm going to do is write
another article kind of like in the
sphere and link it to it or maybe like
just flow a little more energy towards
it to see if I can can bump it up so
that's where it kind of become becomes a
game for me of like oh man I get it on
the top of Google ain't no looking back
at our past and our path to this point I
just I love the content marketing side I
love the search engine traffic it's my
it is definitely my favorite like
Facebook ads are fun it's it's like a
faucet you could turn on which is really
cool I like how quick it is but like you
know and I mean the first few years of
content marketing through search engines
was challenging because we weren't
seeing those kinds of results but once
you build a specific level of authority
which is a very arbitrary thing right
Google calculates it there's no way for
us to know what it is but there's this
threshold that once you cross it you
literally can like a sniper go through
or not a sniper what would be a positive
alternative to that like a great dart
player you can go throw dull bull's-eyes
but you can literally go choose a phrase
that you're not you know have any
content on you can go create a piece of
content and within a day you literally
can start to receive traffic that can
generate for years and years and years
and years and if you don't hit the
number one spot you can go kind of like
add into the leg build a silo around it
build up make a video embed a video you
can make it more of a multimedia post
and like yeah I'm like when I was
starting out I I did Dustin
Atlee kind of like target more obscure
longtail keywords that had very low
competition and low search volumes under
your belt early yeah yeah I didn't like
and and even now like I do often kind of
like try to cherry pick ones that I know
I can rank for but I've started to also
mix and like okay I'm going to go after
that keywords like it's above my pay
grade but let's go for it anyway see
what happens
wow this has been an awesome
conversation for for the listeners this
was literally like a test of a new
microphone and I decided I was just
gonna like run with it and you kept pace
thank you very much the mosquitoes are
out so we need to build a fire I need to
put pants on I'm wearing shorts by the
way if that sounded awkward because I
did but the mosquitoes are biting my
calves so that's what needs happened any
final comments to somebody who's out
there wanting to build their business
trying to get momentum on their side
like like what what tip would you give
them or what can you give them whether
it's social media or I don't know final
deep thought for I think my biggest
thought or my biggest tip would be to
[Music]
focus more on a long-term vision be if
you're going to like commit today to
growing your business if your goal is
growing your business like are you
focused on a niche and a topic that
you're willing to like devote the next 7
years of your life to and if that sounds
like a lot and sounds stressful you're
probably not in the right niche because
like I've been in the field I'm
operating in for more than seven years
then someone asked me that a couple of
years ago and I was like yeah I'm
totally in for another seven like I I
love it and there continues to be
unfolding going deeper and I think
following that inner passion and inner
inspiration like if that's in alignment
with how you're able to like earn an
income that is just magic and yeah and
like that that merge of following
inspiration being creative giving value
being of service to others like
providing positive service to the world
like when all that intersects it truly
is magic and then that's been like
really like true and lasting abundance
can align in your life not only
financial abundance but just like
respecting yourself and loving yourself
and knowing that you're not in a shady
business model and you're making a
difference in people's lives and you're
in you're often to see that is where the
magic happens and that's like when you
actually make more money because you're
in integrity so do what you love and
find that intersection
where what you love can be giving value
to people around that topic and that's
where the magic and money and
fulfillment is my favorite by-product
right now you're right and fulfillment
is worth more and when you get them all
working it truly is magic so and if
you're not sure about what that is spend
more time in the forest in the woods in
the desert in nature because it's so
incredibly clarifying we were just in
Bend Oregon for ten days and we were
both like feeling a little drained and
we just like got out here to our
campsite and we're just like hanging out
at the trees and down by the creek and I
just I feel so recharged and so much
better and like okay yeah I'm ready to
get back to creating and giving value
and making a difference in the world
BAM let's do this yeah and then we
hopped in the Jeep and recorded one of
our audio recordings right in the Jeep
had a couple of interruptions but dealt
with it anyways and and now we're
sitting here recording a podcast and
like it just it's magic when you're in
the flow and anyone can get here but I
think you write some interest
introspection goes a long way and it's
worth the effort and wish you all the
best I hope this podcast has been
beneficial if so be sure to give it a
star rating of some number of stars of
your choosing an honest rating and an
honest review it's highly appreciated
