so much for coming back alright so on
this video we're gonna talk about how I
made my very first dollar right online
okay now I'm gonna take you way back
we're gonna go back like 20 years okay
I I would say that probably some of you
watching this video were not even born
yet when I made my first dollar online
okay so let me just take you back when
it all began
now I work jobs alright I was employed
at over 32 different places out there
yes I counted them all I did everything
I did hard physical labor I did
construction I worked at McDonald's I
worked at Taco Bell different fast-food
restaurants I was a cashier man I did so
many different things just I can't even
think about all of them right now but I
either get laid off get fired let go a
couple times I just walked off the job I
just got in my car left I was I was just
so confused right I didn't know what was
going on I thought this was what life
was all about because that's what people
told me they said go get a job that's
what you do you make you you you know
you work a job you make money so you can
pay the bills and get along in life and
so I was like oh okay so that's what I
did but you know what when I was not
working I was at home and I was in my
dad's office I was on the computer and I
was you know it was it was the family
computer was an old Macintosh we had a
Macintosh Plus Macintosh se they didn't
even call it a Mac back then there was
no iMac or nothing like that
I think was and then there was like an
old Macintosh Quadra right so that's how
I got started I was passionate about
computers and and I was really into
graphics and animations and drawing
things on the computer and seeing all
that and even on a black-and-white
computer it was still exciting for me
okay and that's what I did in my free
time and I loved doing that and I didn't
want
work I didn't want to go out there and
get a job I just wanted to stay home on
the computer right well eventually my
parents they moved out of the state I
wanted to stay where I was I had to find
a place I became a roommate and I got a
different job something a little bit
more sustainable I was working in a
warehouse you know putting stuff on the
shelves and stuff and I was able to
support myself and pay the rent and pay
some bills and stuff so I did that for
like over a year but then even that
didn't work out I just got tired of
doing that I lost myself I didn't know
who I was and and I was like there's
more to life than this and I just felt
like a slave and I'm wasting away in my
life in the years and everything
something's going on and and I just I
got a change man I just left right I
quit and I I moved back in with my mom
and dad all right now guys I didn't have
a computer I had to use their computers
so my dad he still had the old Macintosh
I went on there I started creating
graphics it was totally cool and I think
at that time I was using Mac Paint I
know it's embarrassing but I got on to
this network called AOL now a lot of you
guys if you've been around the game for
a while you know what AOL is all right
you might see some old AOL emails out
there I don't know they're floating out
there somewhere but so I had a o L and
it was just a place where you could go
it was like just the it it was the
internet simplify basically there was
like online communities you could share
files it was just an easy way to go on
and check your email it had a built an
email client and all this okay so it's
very straightforward very basic and so I
met this girl on AOL and later she be
she you know we did a lot of exchanging
back and forth a lot of communication
and so we ended up becoming girlfriend
and boyfriend we got this apartment
together and she had this old Packard
Bell computer it was like this basket
ball to monitor it was like curved on
the front man it was just totally
old-school it's like a 15-inch monitor
and you know
packard-bell nothing special it wasn't
like a rocket ship or anything like that
but long story short to just kind of
move this along I started using a Paint
Shop Pro all right now Paint Shop Pro I
think there was a trial I don't know I
got a bootleg of it okay I was broke I
didn't have any cash
so I started using Paint Shop Pro and
there was no layers or anything like
that but eventually I upgraded and I got
a copy of Photoshop for now that's when
the layers came out right so I was
totally excited I started using
Photoshop and I just did Photoshop like
all day long every single day and I was
just obsessed about it I started
creating graphics I went onto the
internet found there was hardly any
sites out there there wasn't very many
people with graphics sites and stuff not
like it is now online I mean totally
different there's like millions of sites
now but back then there was just like a
handful and I got inspired eventually we
might go the girlfriend and I we kind of
split up when our separate ways I got my
own little duplex and and I still had my
whole my old car it was like running on
it had low compression and one cylinder
it would stall at stoplights and stuff
and I was still struggling guys but the
one thing that I was obsessed about was
was the graphics and and how cool that
was and and Photoshop just inspired me
so much and then I I decided you know
what I'm gonna create my own website I'm
gonna create my own website so I did
that I came up with a domain name now
back then when you registered a domain
name it was like over a hundred dollars
I don't even think it was Network
Solutions I don't even know if they're
still around I mean now people register
domain names for like you know eight or
nine or ten bucks on Google a GoDaddy or
Namecheap but back then guys to to get a
domain name it was like a hundred and
twenty dollars it was a big deal right
it's like you're starting an
organization here okay so I did that and
I got a server together I have no idea
how I did that
it was totally jalopy guys really really
old-school there
no WordPress no WordPress guys we're
talking basic HTML pages no content
management system nothing like that if
you had a content management system and
you were like you know you are like I'm
one of the hired scaled dudes like you
had a lot of things going and and you
had a lot of connections and stuff like
that but for me no it was Microsoft
front-page where you designed these
basic HTML pages like kind of like
you're doing a word page inside
Microsoft Word and then you would upload
these web pages to the internet from
from front-page which was the program
going thinking about it right now is
just like yeah it was that far back and
so man things have really changed since
then okay but I created a website I
created a website and I started to post
my different graphics on it that I
created in my spare time just personal
images and different things and and and
made a little portfolio right but the
whole intent and the purpose of my
website was to make tutorials was to
share my my work and and to show other
people how to create graphics okay to
make money no no no no people didn't
really even come onto the Internet to
make money guys it was not like that
like it is now but people think the
internet like they come on it's make
money online make money online like that
wasn't even a keyword back then okay
this is ancient okay so we you know it
was just cool to have your own website
and people still do that it's just
really cool just to have that and people
from all over the world to come and see
your work and to look at your your web
your but web pages and follow your
Photoshop tutorials and create different
graphics and and have them get excited
about your creations and they send you
emails about you know hey thank you so
much and I'm embrace to get 200 300
emails a day of people they didn't have
comments back then there was no
subscribe button guys there was no email
box to see people have
actually go to your contact page and
send you an email what's really there's
a lot there's a lot of websites out
there today that are just like this but
that's how it was that's how people
communicated with you and they had forms
and communities and different things
later on but I was passionate about it
my website blew up as a matter of fact
there was one point where if you if you
would have went to like Google and this
was when Google was just getting off the
ground okay way back and at one point
you could go to google and type in mark
and my name would be like on the first
page like the top three people at the
top okay and I think the guy the guy
above me was like Mark Twain or whatever
he was like you know the famous Mark
Twain I think he was at the very top of
whatever but I was like like the top
three people inside of Google for just
the first word mark that's how small the
internet was guys okay and then Yahoo
reached out to me they placed my my
website number one for graphic resources
inside their directory when this dot
when this stuff started to happen my
site just blew up okay I started getting
like 5,000 6,000 unique visitors every
single day to my website it was just
crazy there there was people I would go
places and I would tell them about my
website and they would say oh I know who
you are
like what like people that were flipping
burgers at a fast food restaurant knew
like we're already going to my website I
remember calling my cousin and telling
him just I don't just I don't know out
of nowhere just telling we were just
talking about my website and his wife my
cousin's wife already knew about my
website like that's how small this was
and people were going to my website they
didn't even do graphics but they just
went there just to look at to see what I
was doing next and and so old times good
times for once in my life out of all the
things that I
I told myself who I was and the things
that I was labeled as right but I was a
slow learner
I was ADHD I was OCD I had Asperger
syndrome and all these labels that I
felt like were placed on me
you know for so long I just felt like I
you know I was just like other people
but I was just not as good you know and
I really got down on myself how come
other people can get jobs and and
sustain them and make more money and pay
their bills and have a nicer car than me
and you know I had my old escort it was
a head low compression and one cylinder
it would stall at stoplights and I had
that for a long time I burned out the
clutch like three or four times and that
thing nickel-and-dime me to death
it was nothing glamorous but that's what
I had and so a revelation happened and I
realized that I was in the wrong place
okay now I'm getting to the one-dollar
in just a moment but I realized I was in
the wrong place
I was I was utilizing and using all the
things that I sucked at to try to become
successful okay all my weaknesses okay I
was focusing on that I was using those I
was not using my strengths what got me
out of bed what excited me to get up and
to go over to the computer literally my
bed was like four feet away on my
computer was literally four feet away
from my bed I would just get up go right
over here and sit down probably not very
healthy court not right here but it was
not healthy but you know that's what I
did because I was just so passionate
about I was trying to think about okay
what which tutorial do I want to make
next and I was all into making all my
little Photoshop tutorials on my website
so easy to understand right and so it
just developed a lot of traction and
then I decided I looked around I saw a
few things that some other guys were
doing they were creating these little CD
ROMs and selling them on their website
and all the CD ROM was it was just kind
of like
an extension of the website so to speak
a lot of people were asking me they were
looking in my portfolio asking me hey
mark could you explain how to do this
and that and some of those tutorials
were a little bit more advanced and so
what I did is I decided to keep all
those advanced tutorials and and put
them all on a CD and just sell that CD
right from my website ok and so that's
what I did without even knowing it
I was actually pre launching that CD I
was telling people that I was coming out
with something it's a cd-rom and I'm not
gonna tell anybody what's on it I'm just
gonna say hey I'm coming out with it if
you want more interest or you if you
were interested in it then enter your
email in this box I didn't know but I
was I was pre launching this product was
which looking back at that now which is
it was just brilliant that I thought I
was doing that but I did it by accident
and so I did that and I pre launched it
for like 2 or 3 months right people were
foaming at the mouth
wanting to get this CD and I was totally
pumped up I had a look over 1100 people
on a mailing list ready to send out that
mailing list when that CD became
available I got boxes I had a little
shipping department in my duplex a
little table there with you know a bunch
of tape and stuff when all ready to go
and man when I the day I came out and I
launched that the shopping cart I got
like I remember I got 63 orders in less
than an hour and the shopping cart
system crashed okay now this was some
like shopping cart system I bought from
this one dude for like 200 bucks on the
Internet and I think it was like it was
like a one-person company it was like
some guy he was like a programmer and
guys they didn't have PayPal back then
okay they didn't have stripe
nothing like that yeah no PayPal right
my dad had to co-sign and put down a
deposit for me on a manual credit card
machine at the
okay and then they found out like what I
was doing
let the nature of the business as they
would call it and they knew a lot like
about chargebacks and stuff like that it
was really sketchy back then guys I mean
it was like anything over 1% and like
they would get in a panic and it's still
kind of like how it is today but I was
able to get a manual credit card machine
and now when we made orders the orders
they would submit them through a form
online and then that form I would get an
email and I would have to manual entry
manual enter all the little credit card
numbers into the machine
I had to get my family my mom and my dad
to help me out with this we actually
started feeding the orders to their
house and then I had my dad entering
numbers credit card numbers and
processing and packaging all this stuff
for me and it was amazing at that time
so here I am completely broke I mean I
was all labor I mean I didn't have
anything to invest going from that to
making like ten thousand dollars in a
week in my early 20s I mean it was just
like wow like I was blown away okay but
what what can you really take away from
all of this guys is that what I did 20
years ago can still be applied today and
it can still work I went into it without
thinking about like I'm gonna I'm gonna
start it with the thought of I want to
make money okay I started it because it
was something that I love to do it's
something that I was passionate about
something I wanted to share and if if
somebody else would use what I was
creating that was amazing to have
somebody read and apply what you make
it's exhilarating it's a wonderful
feeling okay and so that's what got me
up in the morning but it's no different
than today what I did 20 years ago you
can still apply that and I made a couple
couple days ago I made another video
about how people start with the
first and how they have it totally
backwards you need to start you need to
get into something that you need to
choose your suck what what's really
going to you know because it's gonna
suck there's gonna be times where it's
going to be hard for you you're gonna
have hard times and so what is that
thing where when you have those sucky
times you're still gonna stick with it
you know what is that thing that you can
do it even though you know you're not
gonna see results right away but you're
still gonna be you're gonna have enough
passion to continue forward you've kind
of fell in love with the process not so
much the money okay and the journey of
the whole thing which I think that needs
to be there that passion for that
journey that excitement along the
journey there you go guys that's how I
made my first dollar I made a lot more
than one dollar when I made my first
dollar but that's usually how it goes
you're not gonna make your first you're
not gonna make a dollar a lot of you
guys are not going to make a dollar
online you're gonna make like $30 $40
and if you're coming out with your own
product
you're probably gonna make a thousand
dollars okay so think big because
there's a lot of opportunity out there
don't believe what other people tell you
all right people out there to label you
they're whatever they're going through
in their lives the struggles the pains
that they are going through the
frustrations has nothing to do with you
you guys know I always say that you are
powerful you can do and become anything
that you want and we're all the same
right we don't have dumb people we don't
have smart people they're the only
difference is is that people make
different decisions
okay different decisions that's what
makes us different okay so make that
decision so that's it guys that's how I
made my very first dollar online if you
