all right what's going on it's Doug
Huntington here in this video I'm going
to tell you about some terrible things
that you could do with your outreach
emails and hopefully how to avoid them
now I'm using a different like format
here with the live stream so I'm not
sure if I could share my screen and if I
can't share my screen I'm just gonna
read the emails to you so it'll be a
challenge of my reading skills and your
patience so we'll get into that welcome
folks I am gonna keep it pretty tight
today I'm going to keep it tight we're
going to like just get into it so couple
quick things I have a new hats and
people are noticing already it's not
really new I just don't wear it that
often
this is actually from Bolivia my my dad
he picked up some of these alpaca hats
for me it's reversible too it covers
your ear and it's been snowing a lot
I'll share some vlog footage in a few
days or weeks or whenever I get around
to it but I think it's snowed like well
over a foot in the last three to four
days and it's extremely cold but enough
about me let's get into these emails and
like I said I don't even know if I'm
gonna be able to share the screen like I
intended to with the old version I see
we got the some some of the uber fans
here so I appreciate it guys for you
hopping on so quick announcement
we we I'm opening the guest posting
service for a short time I do this
occasionally and I've been getting a lot
of emails in the last couple weeks
because I didn't open it up last month
because I'm busy you may notice there's
a mess back here we're moving right so
if you haven't heard the news we're
moving and we're moving very quickly so
I am literally packing up my laptop
packing things up we're gonna be getting
out of here before too long like in the
middle of all this snowstorm so ok let's
get to the bad emails if you
interested in it guest posting service
if you don't want to do it on your own
then you could check out the link in the
description however I'm gonna give you a
couple tips so it appears like I can't
share the screen currently so that'll
that'll teach me but let's look at a
couple of these emails and again I'm
just gonna end up reading them out to
you which was not what I intended so
this one was sent to a niche site
project so the major issues with these
emails number one they are generally
like following a template and it's very
clear to me that it's using a template
because this one that I've used in the
past like three to four years ago so
I've seen these templates before and I
can tell that they are just not very
personal so some people do a better job
than others which we'll see or you'll
hear and in the examples here so the
subject is resources for affiliate sites
and it says hi I'm sure you get a lot of
content but I wanted to bring to your
attention a guide we released about how
to use the blah blah blah which I
blurred out so I don't even know what it
says at this point this helpful guide
tells you everything you need to know
about keyword research this guy this
already reached many reach to many
people and viewed so I want to make sure
you had a chance to check it out and
they give me a link and then they say do
you think it'll be a good fit for your
blog below question mark I would love to
get your thoughts and they they put it
to niche site project slash resources
and then best anneal so a couple issues
with that one is it's generally well
there's some bad grammar some poor
phrasing that seems unnatural it follows
again the format that I've seen we
released a guide on blank and it tells
you about X and it's really great and
why don't you link to it so basically I
don't know who the person is at all and
we have no relationship and basically
they're just asking me for some
so when it comes down to it like when I
first started my blog I maybe would have
like exchanged some emails but I'm so
busy now and I get so many of these
emails that number one I'm marking the
spam so that's not good for the person
so I'm marking as spam because they're
bad emails and they made no effort and
then on a deeper level because I'm busy
and I have other things to do they're
literally like create trying to create
more work for me and they don't offer
anything in exchange now everything's
not transactional but let's face this
email that they sent me is purely
transactional they're just asking me for
something and I really don't know who
they are I don't give a about them
or their side or anything like that so
we have some other fun ones coming up
which get a little better since I'm
reading these out what we're gonna do
and thanks for the patient people that
are online I trust that you can hear me
okay I tried to test the audio and stuff
ahead of time but I'll do another one of
these and hopefully I'll be able to
either share the screen or figure out
some way to make this maybe I'll print
them out and hold it in front of the
screen or something like that seems
wasteful to print things out but let's
get to the next one here maybe I won't
go through them all since I'm reading
all of them oh this is a great one this
is the one that I wanted to tell you
about all right yeah I do
Marc asked if I have a printer I do I
actually have a printer over here and
now that you mentioned I can't exactly
remember why I needed it but like my
wife and I were like we need a printer
of some kind I think was probably for
like tax documents or something legit
you know alright so this one the subject
is checking in on a resource for blank I
can't remember I think they just I don't
remember what site they sent it to I
think they sent it to a niche site
project no they sent it to one of my
affiliate sites so checking it on a
resource for some affiliate site and
this the reason why this one is so
interesting is because it's from Blake
at and this is not the real email
address but it's blake an outreach
Communications Manager at
creditcards.com alright so let that sink
in just for a second so creditcards.com
is sending out bad email outreach and
i'm you know i and probably many other
people are marking them as spam because
you know what i don't care about is
credit card companies i just i can't
even actually i can think of a few other
like industries where maybe i would
dislike them even more but you know what
they're best friends with the credit
card industry anyway these would be
things like bankers and maybe car
salesmen and that sort of thing
any kind of credit stuff so anyway these
jokers over at its creditcards.com they
sent me an email and it says this hi
there i wanted to check in with you one
last time so they've sent me multiple of
these it says this i wanted to check in
with you one last time
regarding our guide to blank I thought
our guide would provide a use provide
useful information for your reader
readers on this page on your website and
then they list the link please let me
know if you decide to link to our free
resource or if you have any questions
gratefully blank blah blah blah
from outreach communications of
creditcards.com a huge company and then
they have their mailing address over
there in Austin Texas beautiful city by
the way love Austin Texas great barbecue
great food all-around good tacos food
trucks are great but the barbecue you
know that central Texas brisket you
can't beat it
can't beat it in my opinion so anyway
Blake it's like why like why would i
hook up credit cards calm when credit
cards calm is not doing anything for me
it's again they're asking for something
they're creating work it's clearly a
benefit for them no benefit for me and
yeah it's just rough it's rough and
because I get so many of the emails it's
just a little annoying which you could
probably hear my voice here so
don't don't worry I'll tell you a better
way to do these things by the way so
let's do let's do like one more here and
then move on with the day I will be
actually just shortly I'm gonna be
recording a little just a conversation
podcast with my wife and just talk like
we're moving we've lived here in Bozeman
for four years we love it we like it a
whole lot we're gonna record just a
little conversation she doesn't even
know what we're recording about yet but
it'll be about living here and just like

this one is just poorly written and
terrible so the subject line is this
subject lines the legit this is alright
I've used something like this before but
at this point is over you so here it is
love your informative post and in in
parentheses and a proposal so it's like
it pays you a compliment which is good
and then it introduces a little bit of
like curiosity right I don't know what
the proposal is what could it be they
liked my writing that's great and what
could this proposal be so then that's a
legit that is an okay subject line there
all right so the problem starts right
after the salutation so it starts with
hey while browsing the internet and
that's what what is that right all right
while browsing the internet I came
across your site they listed the domain
name
I noticed you referenced some other
websites as well I recently published
some detail guides and now fine finding
some possible ways to gain readers
attention so it would be great if you
allow us to be mentioned in one of your
published posts my team and I felt this
would be a good additional resource for
your site also as a gesture of thanks
I'm ready to pay you for your editorial
effort or available to mention you from
one of my other authority web
sites please reach out with any
questions or feedback thanks and keep up
the great work
at they just list the domain name and
best regards they list whatever their
name was and I see they've sent me
multiple messages this is another thing
I hate the follow-up messages because
I've already marked the piste BAM and
then they're following up and this is a
symptom of the you know the ability for
us to automate our email follow-ups
which seems like great in theory but
like many things that marketers use they
abuse it until it's like unuseful
perhaps is still useful following up is
okay again I'm going to tell you a
better way to do this and thanks for
again for the people that hopped or
staying on with me here so basically
there were several issues with this it's
again the subject line pretty good I
like that maybe you tweaked it a little
bit so it's not so generic but the
grammar is messed up
right so it's I'm seeing issues so I
read it and you may think Doug you can't
read very well out loud which maybe I
can't but the real problem is they wrote
it poorly right they wrote it poorly
there's some just grammar issues now
they do they are treating it like a
transaction so good for them they're
like hey we'll pay you for your effort
so a couple of these in the past I just
I'm curious sometimes so I'm like oh
what's your budget
sometimes I'll send an email back to see
to play with them see what's going on or
they say they'll blame from one of their
other sites now that may seem tempting
and in fact many of my students do
mention that oh you know I sent out an
email and then this person said they
have a bunch of other websites that they
could link up to the problem with that
sort of scenario is they're probably
doing that with everyone and they are
probably linking around with their own
sites and you're just not really sure
about who you're getting in bed with and
to keep that analogy going right
you don't know the other sites unless
you investigate you don't know the other
sites that they have slept with before
so you got to protect yourself you don't
want to be linking around with people
that you don't know that you just meet
online by sending an email or maybe they
sent you an email and they're like hey
why don't you link to my site and I'll
link to your site and it'll be great
because you know they're doing that all
over the place and most of the time it's
gonna be fun but you never know if
there's gonna be like a pretty strong
pattern that's recognizable where maybe
everyone like all the people are gonna
have the same links right that's weird
you don't want that you don't want that
footprint out there and I think that's
those are the main issues so all right
what can you do instead to make it
better so before I go on and tell you
that if people are just tuning in guest
posting service is open for a few days
until we fill up and get ten ten orders
right so I'm I'm running a very small
select group I don't work with everyone
I checked your site and that sort of
thing so anyway you check it out there's
a link in the description my guest
posting service and here are a few ideas
that will help you do better outreach so
and this will probably contradict a lot
of the other people that may be in the
space so and and I'll just say there's a
couple schools of thought like some
people are like don't build any links
don't do guest posting that is a bad
idea because you could basically
introduce introduce yourself to grey hat
activities right like if you're trying
to guest post and you're hoping to get
links like maybe that's a bad thing but
there's another group of people that
they're doing PB ends and other like
very grey hat things then there's some
group that does guest posting and
there's some other people that do guest
posting and they are teaching to
automate as much as possible and send
out these emails and really take more of
a shot
gun approach versus you know what I'm
trying to do so in a lot of ways I I
mean I started using that shotgun
approach approach and I've started
sending out lots of emails I had a guest
posting service back in like 2015 for a
little while and I was sending out a lot
of emails and this time went on as I was
you know refining my system I found that
sometimes I got a terrible conversion
rate on on the level of like you know
two percent so I would send out a bunch
of emails and like really only get like
two guest posts out of a hundred email
sent and as I looked at what I was doing
and how I was sending out the emails I
decided that it was probably gonna be a
better move actually I didn't decide I
tested it so I was like I'm sending out
a ton of emails I'm not really screening
things very well I'm just you know
spreading email terrible emails like the
ones I read to you across the internet
and I'm not I'm not making the world a
better place right so I was like well
how can i how can I like work with these
people a little bit more and do the
opposite right so I was like let me I
don't want to tweak a little thumbscrew
I want to do like the opposite and see
what will happen so basically I was like
well what if what if I go go ahead and
just spend more time building the
relationship and you know I know a lot
of the people on right now with me live
here they you know right you know that I
say you know do high-touch spend more
time building the relationship you will
stand out 100% with these outreach
emails so basically that is that's the
morale so however you want to do it
right you have a lot of options maybe in
the next few days I will go into a
couple other details but if you are I
was chatting with a guy earlier today a
little coaching call and he was asking
me about social media and he was like
dad I know you
you're not really into social media so
much do you think you could have a site
without doing any social media yeah you
definitely can't I I don't I hate social
media I try to not spend time there and
because of that I don't cuz I don't
enjoy it and it probably cost me some
money but you know it doesn't make me
happy and you could choose what you want
to work on so I choose not to work on it
but I asked him right it doesn't matter
what I think of like social media and
exactly I was like do you like using
Facebook and Pinterest it was like yeah
I do I enjoy spending time on there so I
was like we'll go for it it's great it's
a great way to get some traffic on your
young site and that sort of thing now
you know we're talking guest posting but
the point is you could be active on
social you can spend time on social and
be able to build that relationship you
could share content with a person you
could chat with them on messenger you
can maybe interview right interview an
admin here's a nice little trick for the
people that are sticking around for the
20 minute 20 minutes we've been on here
you can interview admins of big Facebook
groups and just say hey you know you're
doing great they probably usually have a
blog or they have some thing that they
could talk about they're an expert in
something and you could interview them
and do you know where they're gonna
share do you know that we're they're
gonna share like the interview in the
big Facebook group that they have so
it's a great way to like build a
relationship with a person you're doing
them a favor but like when I get these
cold emails from people that I don't
know I am literally just marking them as
spam because they suck right there
they're just bad occasionally I'll get a
slightly better pitch it seems more
professional or something like that and
then maybe I'll exchange a couple emails
but usually I mean it's all about
relationship building it's all
relationship building so social media is
a great way to do it sending emails is a
great way I talk about blog commenting
pretty often and a lot of
people actually I see comments just
about every day does blog commenting
still work in 2019 blah blah blah well
if you're just trying to build links
with blog comments not really but if you
use blog comments as a piece of the
puzzle of your networking with people
then it's a great way it's a great way
to get someone's attention you can also
you know go to the DM on like Instagram
or something like that I mean a lot of
big influencers or bloggers or something
like that they they are on Instagram
they don't have a team doing Instagram
for them even like big movie stars and
stuff like it's on their phone you know
like they're doing it themselves you can
send them messages and like potentially
get a conversation going so anyway
