type project i'm going to show you some

of the equipment that I used to shoot

these videos okay this is my basic setup

for shooting the videos so we have a few

things going on here and we'll start

with the actual camera source and then

this is a iphone so this is an old 5c

that it's actually pretty small and it

only has like eight gigs so just about

everything is deleted off of there and I

just record some videos on there every

now and then I am of course not

recording with it right now I'm using my

own iPhone this one down here is an old

one and my wife doesn't use anymore so

the cool part is it's very small a

little bit smaller than the one that I'm

using right now which I think it's an

iPhone 6 I can't quite remember but a

couple key things you know when you're

shooting video aside from when you're

hand-holding it which I'm doing right

now you want to have a steady you know

steady shot you don't want it to be kid

held again like I'm doing right now but

I'm trying to hold it pretty steady so

we have a couple tripods here this is

just a small one that always you know

hold my iPhone's very well has a little

clamp you can see it just spring-loaded

and it just holds the camera steady

you can gonna wrap these gorillapod to

Joby so you can just like curl these

around and wrap it or in the tree or a

sign or whatever is handy or you can

just you have set it up like so like a

traditional tripod so it's very

versatile in this one this larger one

here is DSLR version so you can actually

hold stuff that is pretty heavy so

that's really cool that is you know

something I'd use all the time and you

know this little clamp here you can see

it's a square too you know for

getting this attached to your camera

there's a little level on here which is

super help so I sometimes will you know

detach this foam holder and place it in

here so I could use the larger more

steady gorilla pod here so these are

great I can't remember how much they

cost I've had this one for several years

and this one just for about two but it

will seriously hold the DSLR and really

handy to have especially if you're going

out hiking or something like that it's a

little bit lighter more versatile than a

traditional tripod for the audio I have

two main things that I use one is this

iRig cast so you can see that it is has

like the three prong or starting to

three section prong here so it's

actually you made for iPhones or other

smartphones I guess and you can see the

game setting there so there's a high-low

game setting typically I use the high

game setting but this is super useful

I've used it several times for

interviews like the ones where I talked

to Jim I would actually record the audio

on a separate iPhone in the video on

another iPhone that way I could place

the video phone further away to get a

the right shot isn't if we were trying

to get and then I could put the audio

iPhone right next to us so we would get

really good audio so after that it's

just a matter of syncing it up so that

is a really great thing to have around

and around here it can get kind of windy

outside so is that super for outdoor

settings unless it's quite still or if

you're on a deck that maybe has some

enclosures to block the wind just happen

to be pretty windy this morning I was

going to shoot a video outside but it

wasn't going to work so that's that's

one audio thing that I use and it's

great for interviews the other audio is

this loud mic and it is actually an

audio technica audio-technica ATR 3350

so it is one of the more economic mics

out there and it has I think it takes a

couple like watch batteries to power it

and I think I've actually forgot to turn

it on a couple of times I've forgotten

to turn it on a couple of times it

seemed to work okay but the cool part is

you can you know run run this line like

from your cameras it's pretty far away

this is obviously a long wire here and

then place the lav mic on your collar or

somewhere on your clothing so

it's rather inconspicuous didn't mean

it's what you know a pro video if you

watch the news you're using live bikes

because they work well additionally you

can use this on a DSLR which I'm going

to show you my DSLR in a second but the

audio is great it's very it's plenty

loud and in fact I've been doing a few

YouTube live sessions and people are

telling me they can't hear me very well

I didn't use a microphone so I'm going

to probably going to need to start using

this lav mic just because it works a lot

additionally I even use it on webinars

good idea so I've been doing weekly

webinars if you haven't checked

engineers alleys which cover like some

internet marketing stuff or something

we're in niche sites typically but I use

this mic for the session because it

picks up the audio so well and you know

most of the time I don't need to hear

anything on a webinar any other people

to hear me so this is the setup that I

use it's pretty cool and again it has

the three section prong there which you

can see so it is you know designed and

made for smartphones so let's take a

look at the DSLR set up next

now we're looking at the DSLR setup and

pretty simple I have an old Canon t2i so

it's about six or several years old

right now I've had it for a while bent

all the way down the world and it still

works well you know the camera body has

been beaten up quite a bit but it still

works fine and there's no issues with it

so the key with really a DSLR setup is

the lenses so it's all about the lenses

I just have a couple here that I want to

show you first is I guess I'll start

here is a 10 to 18 millimeter it's a you

know this is a all cam setup of course

the 10 to 18 millimeter sort of ultra

wide-angle um has this image stabilizer

capability on a focus of course and I

haven't used it a ton on what YouTube

videos recently but I plan on you know

using it more often in a setting a

couple like I'm in right now which is a

bedroom converted into an office a super

wide angle is sort of convenient to use

and a lens here that's on the camera is

what it is sorry about the brightness it

is a 24 millimeter and it's super small

you can see how tiny it is super small

super light and it is I think the

aperture is 2.8 really a sharp lens in

my one of my favorites because it's so

damn light and small so just for

shooting pictures and just laughs shots

around it's a fun one to use because

it's so small and light and then for

video it's great because so you know

it's a little on the wider side I think

if you convert that over to

um you know I don't know how they phrase

it you know with these new digital

cameras it's like 1.5 times the actual

millimeter size so that would be like I

guess a 30 about a 36 millimeter if you

convert it back to old film film days

hopefully I did the math right on that

but you end up with a reasonably wide

angle but nothing too crazy you know the

the one thing with this lens it's so

wide that it can you know look a little

funny if you're in the wrong part of the

frame but this it works great I actually

use the 24 to shoot all of my video

course by figure niche site and it

worked great

you know sharp images it's fast enough

to use you know inside indoors which I

shot all that stuff indoors and yeah I

just set up the camera I have my small

light kit and I'll show you in a second

so I just have my lighting and it worked

great and I just set it up on a tripod

it didn't move it locked in the focus

and just shot everything so this is the

DSLR setup and it may be pretty close to

the time when I need to upgrade this

this body this camera body just because

you know it's a little old at this point

and for shooting some of these type

videos it would be super useful if I was

able to see the actual the viewfinder of

the back the image preview that would be

really helpful so I mean I may look into

that but turns out iPhones and

smartphones are really awesome to shoot

a video with so that's what I'm shooting

this with right now

okay so now I have backed up and you'll

you're seeing a large window that brings

in a lot of light so that is facing east

and in the morning um you know it

happens to be an overcast day it's a

little snowy out there right now but on

an overcast day it brings in a

tremendous amount of light and on a

sunny day I have to you know pull the

blinds down and sort of diffuse the

light even more so that's one of my main

light sources natural light in it you

know if you can get some natural light

when you're shooting video like that

will make all the difference so I wanted

to show you the this 100 watt little

shop light so actually I mean the budget

was tight when I was pulling this system

together so this is literally the

cheapest you know light that you can get

the bad part is there's no diffuser and

I should you know if I'm shooting a lot

of these videos I should probably invest

in a small light kit that you could buy

on Amazon for under $100 in it you know

it comes with a essentially like a white

diffusing I don't know if it's paper or

cloth but there is a white diffuser in

front of the light so you end up with a

softer light the problem with this is it

can come off a little harsh so you have

to make sure either you're far away from

your background or that the light is far

enough away or shining in a direction so

that it won't create a shadow behind me

I don't always take care of that

properly but you know this is what I

came up with and you know these these

bulbs are pretty cheap and I think I was

able to pull this together for about it

was probably like fifteen or twenty

dollars and I have honestly I have seen

a couple YouTube videos where a person

will buy several of these shop light

tips and then they will take off this

shield here and get a splitter and

they'll put say like

four of them together and get maybe 900

watt maybe they got like 120 watt bulbs

and they are you know tremendously

bright when you put them in series

together you end up with you know is

what is pretty close to one of those

light tips that are made specifically

for shooting video so this is pretty

much my setup here super simple and you

know actually right now it's a good

comparison you can see I don't have the

light on of course so this is all

natural light shining in here so you

know the natural light is pretty decent

and when you're shooting on on an iPhone

or some other you know a high quality

phone you get pretty good video so

there's no reason to have to get a DSLR

but if you happen to have one it would

be worthwhile so oh one last thing I

like I did use this mic on my DSLR when

I shut the video that works fine and in

fact the audio was a little high so I

had to experiment and move the mic down

from you know near my lapel area my

collar area down to your lower about

around my stomach actually I mean the

audio is pretty good I'm not in

particular to the valve talker but the

audio is really good in the room that I

was shooting in which is just a bedroom

like this office like this so these

these mics worked really well and that

the key thing to just make sure the

audio is clean so all right I hope you
