other reason but sometimes that's kind
of noisy so you should be sure you turn
your phone down turn off your
notifications and stuff like that so
this is a webinar on keyword
cannibalization it's a pretty advanced
SEO topic and it goes pretty deep but I
actually get this question a lot
especially for people who have you know
published a you know content on their
maybe they have some content that have
common keywords you know maybe I always
look for objects on my desk maybe you
know okay so I talked about phones
earlier maybe it's like iPhone cases and
then like you know iPhone 6 cases and
iPhone 6 plus cases and like it's what
happens when you know the wrong term is
rank and go into a definition to show
you an example and stuff like that so
it's a little bit more clear and I see
we still just have two people on and I'm
hoping people can hear me so I'm just
going to type you guys may not be at a
place where you type or something like
that
I just type it in here and burn time a
little bit until you know we get a few
more folks on so couple things it could
be a light crowd today kind of like last
week where I covered um the topic of
getting promoted at work so Nigel says
yes you can hear awesome so at least I
can continue on and we'll get something
out of this so last week I did a webinar
on getting promoted at a corporate job
it was kind of funny because a lot like
more than one person told me hey why are
you covering that topic
we um hey Lia what's up so you wanted to
grab a snack this sounds like a good
idea
so people were sort of turned off by the
idea of like corporate jobs and you know
of course one thing you have to remember
is whenever you get an opinion from you
know a minority group of people it may
or may not be representative of the you
know entire group that you're trying to
you know reach so the people that I
heard from about this you know the how
to get promoted your corporate job they
happen to be you know self-employed they
were se OS and they were like hey Dad
we're not interested in the top and the
topic at all turns out like a ton of
people are interested in the topic of
how to get promoted I wish someone would
have told me you know this stuff that I
know now when I was you're trying to get
promoted and had a corporate job so um
you know this topic today is a little
another outlier this is like super
advanced like SEO stuff so maybe a lot
of people don't even know what it is the
other thing is I didn't take like great
care to advertise it to the list
so I sent an email on Friday but I
didn't know the topic at the time and
then I sent one on Monday but I really
wanted people and check out the blog
post not the webinar so this is cool um
another thing I think both you know Leo
and Nigel I think you both know that we
have a new Facebook group under my care
right now I see Matt is on Matt welcome
appreciate you joining up
so we have this Facebook group a good
friend of mine Lewis Ogden he's our
master mastermind group with me now he's
been in a couple others with me like
over us like four years or so we're
business partners on a couple sites so
good friend of mine he happened to blog
over at cloud income and he started this
Facebook group with no real goal in mind
and you know fast forward a year year
and half later there's a handful of
people but it's not too active and he's
kind of moved away from that area
blogging and stuff he's focusing just on
his niche sites and other stuff like
that so he asked me if I wanted it so I
said yeah so we're trying to you know
ramp it up and I actually hired a couple
community managers to keep it's under
control under their I don't want any
spam at all I'd actually rather be
overly harsh to push the spam out then
to then to allow it in on any level so
hopefully that'll be a good good thing
for us as I mentioned I didn't advertise
this as well I see
which have a small crew in here so I'm
just going to get to it and what we will
launch into it and you know cool thing
you know if you're not able to watch the
whole thing maybe you're tuning in a
little bit late or something um and
you're watching a replay perhaps you can
actually watch this over on YouTube so

know consume a little bit more I ramble
a lot and I always do an intro at the
beginning of these so if you already

today is about keyword cannibalization
and we will define that and go into more
depth

so I'm Doug Huntington founder of niche
site project and that's my dog and I
right there where the Beartooth pass in
Wyoming up in the mountains so hopefully
that was like it in the July timeframe
you know a couple years ago and I think
we're going to try and get up there
again when all the wildflowers are
taking off I think there's I don't think
it's open yet by the way I think there's
still a lot of snow I mean I can see
snow in the mountains in front of me
right now so and they're not even that
high so I've been featured or quoted in
several places so I think you can trust
what I'm about to tell you with this
keyboard cannibalization um my niche
site time line I've had some ups and
downs and if you're curious I talk about
it a little bit more if you watch last
week's webinar on getting promoted in a
corporate job the Q&A is at the end but
feel free to go ahead and you know ask
along the way you I believe have the
same kind of little box here so if when
you ask a question you can mark it as a
question here and then I'll be able to
see it a little more easily with a small
crew today it shouldn't be a problem I
should be able to see the questions
pretty easily
so what's keyword cannibalization I'm
going to describe it and then I'm going
to show an example so first off you want
a certain page to rank for a keyword
term or phrase and you're actually
targeting it with the title usually
that's an h1 tag for most most themes or
I guess content management system CMS is
and your content images the video
everything on that page is optimized
around the keyword term or phrase that
you're trying to rank however Google is
ranking some other page on your site
that's a key like distinction
a keyword that I didn't add in here but
like Google's ranking another page on
your site instead of the one that you
want to rank this has happened you know
over time on just about every site that
I've had and a lot of people ask this
question so again I wanted to mention a
real example so you could visualize
exactly what's going on I think I go
into a pretty good amount of detail
coming up so I may talk a little fast
but I just wanted to make sure it's
really clear for everyone exactly what
we're talking about so this is an actual
real example and I I can share it with
you because it's not an inch site this
is on niche site project my internet
marketing blog so I wanted to rank a
specific post for Amazon affiliate site
and the particular posts that I wanted
to rank talks about you know how to
build such a site in the process of
doing so it's actually this one right
here so this is the page that I wanted
to rank it's super long it goes through
like the seven step process and I really
wanted it to be a roadmap to build such
a site now the thing is yeah so here's
the here's the page I kind of must have
taken a screenshot here and I forgot um
so what I what I did was I didn't
proofread this so I researched the
competition and the content that was
actually ranking was different than what
I had so it was not this like process
guide in general it was usually examples
of the sites so like here's actually the
SERPs right here and here's you know one
of the main competitors this is one of
my old students here from cloud living
this tong Tran and he's ranked like
number one or number two for this and
for other related terms which you know
great it's a decent search term and it's
highly targeted he also sells a course
like like me on Amazon affiliate sites
so you know he like he has that term
locked down and I have not been able to
you know take him out of it and the
funny thing is as I look through here I
see you know examples here this is
actually a how-to guide but it's not a
great post overall at least the last
time I looked and then here's a niche
pursuits you know the site that
basically launched my internet marketing
career and this is a post just for last
fall that has been published and as I
look through the top 10 in even 20 I saw
that there were mostly post with
examples so in in fact to even give you
more details one of my friends who's in
a mastermind with me um will bleers who
runs the blog over at one man's brand he
posted a fairly short article on this
example um I guess example of an Amazon
affiliate site and it's only about a
thousand words
he wasn't even trying to rank for it was
just something that he was interested in
and he actually still to this day ranks
in the top 10 he's not even really
trying to rank for so it's a little
crazy especially when I'm about to show
you that I still don't rank for it so
I'll tell you what I've done to help um
as we go through here so anyway I
research the competition I saw it was
mostly example post so I thought hey I'm
not going to fight with Google on this
example posts are doing better so I'm
going to publish an example post and see
what we can do so I essentially did a
skyscraper post on examples which I will
show you I think here so 17 real
examples and I tried not to out any one
sites I just pulled together all the
examples that were out there and a few
extras that were just big corporate
um entities and I reviewed those which
you can see here again this is my site I
did the copy and paste but you can see I
go deep and this is actually a very long
post also now as we're looking at this
now I'm I have a post out there I've
delivered what Google is ranking for
exactly the term that I want I'm using a
keyword rich um I guess title here and
it's optimized for this right so here's
what happened this post here it actually
ranked better for a week or two I think
my site was ranking maybe like 20 or 21
and the new post you know I think it
went up to like 15 at first and then it
may be creeped up to like 11 or so and
then it moved back down so it was kind
of weird
and then the old post took over again
and started ranking like 20th in the new
post with the examples that Google
looked like it liked it moved back down
to like 90 or something so basically
into oblivion into oblivion overall so
here's what I did now I did tell you
that whole thing to define what keyword
cannibalization is so I explained that
whole thing and I'm just going to go
back to the simple one sentence
explanation also just to explain it so
you want a page to rank for a keyword
term I was trying to get Amazon
affiliate site to rank I was targeting
it very intentionally with all the
content that was on there but Google was
ranking another page instead so that's
that's the long and the short of keyword
cannibal
and I see that half is uh missed the
intro so yeah there's a replay you'll
get an email about the replay in a
couple hours and then it will be
published on YouTube in a couple days so
you can go back and watch it there and
as we go through again this is advanced
SEO so it shouldn't come up too often
but here's what you can do if it does so
there are two approaches that I'm going
to explain today I know that there are a
lot of other ways that you can handle it
here are the two ways that I've actually
implemented and you know been successful
with it so both of them basically take
what Google is telling you and then sort
of accept it and then adapt for what
Google wants I think that's key because
a lot of times we want to I know I want
to try to like um I guess basically
force what I want by like doing you know
more actions around SEO so I try to like
go against the grain with Google and
that doesn't work so in this case you
know maybe it shows a little maturity or
patience but essentially this takes what
Google's telling you and goes with it
now the cool thing key thing here is you
have to publish like the content you
have to publish the content and then you
can react if you try and guess you're
going to guess wrong right or you you'll
never know right even if you do research
and try to understand what Google is
telling you to do like I did with the
examples of Amazon affiliate sites it
really um like it doesn't matter the
research that you do because even if
you're like delivering what you believe
is best you may have gotten it wrong
I got it wrong a lot so here is what I
did and first I'll tell you what a
different issue
project so I wanted to publish both
pieces of content and you know part of
the reason why is like this post here
this is the process post it's very long
and it explains a lot so I didn't want
to you know lose this content here and
in fact at the point after I published
both pieces this was still the piece of
content that was ranking best next this
post here it actually stands alone
pretty well so it's example sites real
world examples in traffic and I have a
tiny bit of technical difficulty I'm
going to be back in one second

okay I am back sorry about the delay so
basically this piece of content the 17
example um the 17 examples it stands
alone and it's long-form content it's
really pretty good and I wanted to keep
it on the site because it because both
pieces of content or long when I when I
do what I'm about to tell you that I do
you'll understand why I would want to
keep this so I think you know most
people are probably thinking hey you're
going to have duplicate content so I'll
tell you what I did so one in both
pieces and I just explained why so I
copied the new post to the old post it's
huge right
but it's pulling together all this
information on a common topic and it
does fit together and I'm happy to
publish it together I think it works and
it ends up being a great resource so I
tell you how to build a niche site and
then I show you 17 different niche sites
so it's a really long post and I've
definitely had people tell me hey that's
stupid that's too long people won't read
it
blah blah blah turns out it is long but
the people that are really interested in
it the people that I want to read my
blog they do read it I know when I was
getting into internet marketing I read
all of niche pursuits posts that I can
you know that looked relevant that
weren't out-of-date I listened to all
the podcasts and I listened to them
again
so people that are really into the topic
will read all the information here's the
key thing right so I set the new page
this example page right here I set it to
no Index in SEO settings so basically
you can do this using a plug-in like
Yoast SEO there's like a bunch of other
SEO plugins my theme actually has some
SEO settings so I could just check a box
it's in my theme and I can say
no index the reason why you want to know
index that other content is like it
would be duplicate so now I have if you
read this post here and you look at the
second half of this post 17 profitable
examples it's the same content so I
didn't want this duplicate content so I
just merely no index this post problem
solved right so that's one approach you
can take
so here's what I do for niche sites and
now that's the case if you what to do
you're sorry here's what to do if you
don't want or need to keep the other
page that's ranking this is what I do
for niche sites it actually comes up
pretty often when you publish kgr
content because a lot of kgr content has
you know basically derivative keyword
phrases that are super I guess similar
they're very similar to each other but
they're all distinctly different I will
also mention that a lot of people bring
this topic up when I you know when they
learn about the kgr concept and if
you're not familiar by the way that's
the keyword golden ratio and if you're
watching on like YouTube right now you
should be able to look on my channel for
the keyword golden ratio video and that
explains the whole thing but my point
being some people bring up this point
that they're concerned about keyword
cannibalization as it relates to the
keyword ratio so they simply don't take
action because they're afraid it doesn't
work that's actually good for people
that do it because that means that
there's less competition but the thing
is it does work and you know if you're
if you're unsure of it like test it just
publish a few pieces of content you'll
see that it works and then you'll be
able to react just like I'm telling you
for keyword cannibalization so here's
the scenario
the post and this is very specific for
like a niche site so if we people can
apply it directly the post titled what's
the best x4 why is not ranking for best
extra-wide but a longer post is it is
ranking 60 the longer post is what's the
best X for Z so you can see it's pretty
close but obviously it's not quite right
so the question is how do we tell Google
to rank best extra-wide for the post
instead so what you can do like I said
you're not going to fight with Google
will simply adapt to what Google is
telling us is telling us with the
results so we can just adapt to that so
you can just move the content from
what's the best X for Y to what is the
best x 4z you can remove the sort of
duplicate info like probably both posts
have an intro into conclusion and maybe
some other information about features
and stuff and you could just you know
take that out because it's not it's
redundant in that article when you
combine them then you can use like the
Yoast SEO plug-in or your theme to set a
301 redirect of from the post be moved
so you redirect the what's the best X
for Y post to what's the best X or Z
post so then you you're moving the
content over and you're simply telling
Google hey now this post this URL lives
over here and that essentially takes
care of you know ranking the wrong URL
so that is pretty much it it's actually
fairly straightforward when you get to
it the issue is yeah so you end up
taking real data for your specific
scenario the Google's telling you so
that you can rank the post that actually
has the information and you're simply
moving the information over to the
article
the Google is showing like positive
rankings for so I was going to say the
issue that people run into is that they
try and figure out what Google's going
to do first
so they publish content in the way that
they think so for example a lot of
people have been asking if they can
publish you know 15kg our terms in one
post yes but you're kind of losing the
benefit you're missing the point of the
keyword golden ratio and that is you
want a specific post to be optimized
really well for a long tail keyword so
the only way you can do that is to have
1 kg R term per post that's the only way
you can do it might you have keyword
cannibalization yeah but you can adapt
after Google essentially tells you what
it wants to see so I blew through that
information really fast and we're
already done with it basically so I
thought some of the explanation was
going to take a little bit longer but I
must have talked really fast so see it a
question from leo and actually you know
if you're if you're able to ask other
questions or if you have questions right
now we can get to them so Leo asks when
comparing your site against your
competitors iCloud living or Spencer did
I look at their h2 elements or backlinks
or was it simply on page written content
so you're actually bringing up a really
good point I mostly just looked at the
content and what what they were covering
as far as what was in there
I didn't actually look at the age to
elements or the backlinks in any you
know great
a great deal of detail so you know for a
site like Spencer's I you know his eye
has so much Authority it's tough to you
know challenge I guess in that area but
I did you know intentionally build links
on my site and you know through my guest
posting to my page so you know I have a
decent number of links going to it and
at this point you know like I've put in
a decent amount of time and you know I
sort of hit a roadblock I guess and I
haven't been pushing it I will add you
know just since I'm talking about this
specific post this post eventually made
it its way up to the fifth position and
there was a lot of churn I actually
realized there was a lot of churn in
this SERP um for Amazon affiliate site
some of the same players end up in there
but it moves around a lot
or at least when I was studying it and
moves around a lot and you know I didn't
like the volatility and I wasn't getting
a huge amount of traction so was I sort
of like backtracked a little bit and I I
you know still build links to the page
but I haven't been putting as much like
focus on it so I probably should look at
the h2 elements and make sure that you
know I'm doing it in a smart way and if
I have an opportunity you know maybe the
h2 elements are off and I'd have more
keyword rich stuff in the h2 elements
I'm not sure so good good point Lee I
haven't actually looked at it like that
which is a smart way to look at right so
like I said I think we're in the Q&A SEC

golden ratio question sure what's your
question on the keyword golden ratio it
may actually be worthwhile for me to do
a webinar just on the keyword golden
ratio where I like go through a couple
examples or something like that
a lot of people still have questions and
you know the keyword golden ratio video
that I shot and published it is actually
using the keyword planner so a decent
number of people watch the video and
then ask me how they can get the keyword
planner to show the results and of
course like I don't know eight months
ago Google removed that so you have to
use another keyword tool so maybe you
know me doing a webinar solely on the
kgr would be you know a way that I could
you know basically point people to the
right you know new information that's
available now okay so Arthur says on
Sunday I found more than 35 keywords
with the the ratio of point
if do you mean point two five or point
zero two five the decimals matter
okay so Arthur says okay point point
zero to five so hardly any competition
okay what's your question Arthur
all right Leo says um another topic you
would love to see with emphasis is a
breakdown of how many unique visitors
I expect per thousand words content I'm
gonna write that down visitors per okay
content okay I have no I can tell you
off the bat Leo I have no idea so Leo
mentioned you're expecting 7-under you
started at 731 visitors per thousand
words
now you're 312 so I'm sorry
312 words of content per visitor you as
soon as you get more backlinks that will
improve but you have no idea what to
expect so I don't track I don't track
that stat but maybe all maybe I'll look
at it just from a historical standpoint
the thing is I can tell you that I can
tell you that like on the site that I'm
working on with Rob um there was you
know that's getting like thousands of
visitors day like you know couple
thousand to a specific page like the
traffic thing went up when we improved
it but like it sort of hit a steady
state so like it just was some average
so I don't not sure if I'm making the a
point at all or just spitting out facts
now I'm thinking about my specific site
in like I'm not sure I guess I could be
convinced Leah I'm not sure that metric
matters or if it's consistent across
different types of content if that's
make sense but I think you you probably
have more insight on that specific
metric and why it may matter but like in
my head I'm just I see that you know if
you had more content you get more
visitors usually but it depends on the
content so in how many people are
searching for it okay so I see Arthur
asked when I use the keyword golden
ratio
I literally you know I don't understand
your question I'm sorry it looks like
there's a bunch of typos in here can you
rephrase your question Arthur I'm sorry
I just I don't understand what you're
asking there okay Matt says um my newest
niche site is starting to rank for
several main keywords but every single
one is ranking on the homepage which is
not optimized at all for some of the
keywords I'm thinking it's better not to
use this strategy for a little while at
least and wait until things shake out
with Google Matt yeah I think I agree
you wouldn't want to do this on your
home page um by chance are you getting
links to your home page um and that's
why it's ranking I know sometimes
especially I'm not sure if you're you
know new um Matt - like niche sites and
stuff so I'm sorry if I'm making an
assumption but I have got some questions
where people are doing guest posting
they're getting guest posts and then
they basically get their byline link or
they're linking just to their home page
I almost never link to my home page I
don't care if my home page ranks I'm
trying to rank specific affiliate
content so I'm trying to link to
specific pages the whole point being
Matt if you're getting links to just
your home page that could be why it's
ranking um overall to summarize the
answer to your question
you should wait to see how things shake
out with Google and you should try to
get links to those specific pages um as
much as you can through blog commenting
guest posting any other way you can get
links um and see what happens
