hey what's going on Doug Huntington here
from niche site project and the Doug
show in this video I'm talking to Marcus
and he wants to form a mastermind group
so I featured Marcus in the last success
story interview you could check out that
video there's a link in the description
and basically we talked about why he
wants to form a group kind of get into
the details I tell them about some of my
experience with a mastermind group which
is great highly recommend forming a
mastermind group and we just talked
about a few things related to mastermind
groups so if you are new to the channel
have a look at some of the other videos
subscribe if you want to hook up with
Marcus see if maybe you're a good fit
for his group check out the link in the
description fill out the survey and you
should be able to you know take it to
the next level or whatever it is I'm not
associated with anything in the group
I'm not help helping facilitate or put
it together or anything like that just
helping Marcus get the word out he's a
student if I figure a niche science so
I'm always you know likely to help out a
student anyway let's get to the
discussion now hey what's going on
Doug Huntington here and I'm chatting
with Marcus again success story from
five-figure a niche site and lawyer how
are you doing today I'm doing great it's
awesome to be on the show again we are
gonna talk about mastermind groups today
you send me an email a couple days ago
perfect timing perfect timing and you
were like hey I want to be a success
story I had a thousand dollars per month
if people want to hear that interview
there's a link in the description for it
and you said I want to also form a
mastermind group and I was like alright
this is gonna be great we can help each
other out and I get content everything
situation yes
so Marcus you've reached some success
with your website you've been grinding
for a couple of years and can you just
give like a short intro on like yourself
where you're located your profession all
that kind of stuff so people know yeah
yeah so
Kronus is law and I'm gonna work at a
law firm I just recently got back from
living abroad three and a half years so
I went back to my home country Denmark
and I now live in Copenhagen the capital
cool and what timezone is that by the
way
that's GMT plus one okay cool and part
of this conversation is just gonna like
it's just gonna be casual and one of the
things that a lot of people don't think
about jumping right into the details
time zone is very important I've had
mastermind groups where one person was
roughly in the GMT time zone I'm in the
Mountain Time Zone which is like minus
seven something like that and if someone
else was in Chiangmai so they're like
plus 13 so it was super hard to get a
meeting where it was convenient for all
of us so that's one one aspect there's
some other technical things to go
through before we get to it what are you
looking for out of a mastermind group
yeah well it's I'm looking to be the
forum one or join one both alright what
I want to get out of it is to have some
serious conversations with each member
of the group or you can sort of share
what are you trying to achieve are we
going about it and then also record back
in souls your efforts what you learned
what obstacles you had to resolve and
when you failed and so on and gotcha and
have you been in a mastermind group
before it no I haven't been in a
mastermind group but I thought about it
for several years now and I had good
experience with something similar so
back in my old job I was working in
China and insurance company we were
together with my boss we organized this
weekly event where we have people come
up and practice their sales pitches and
they get five minutes each and then we
would give some constructive advice on
for tomorrow and just this theme that a
lot of people sit down together with
just one goal in mind
improving each
really you know it was much more
powerful than I thought so you know back
to mastermind groups I think that maybe
they were maybe you're underestimated
them before they are probably better
because I was a little worried they
would be a waste of time so that's what
I never did so okay that wasn't gonna be
my next question
my experience is it was kind of the
opposite of what you're describing so I
first learned about like internet
marketing in 2013 from the smart passive
income podcast and pretty quickly Pat
Flynn talks about mastermind groups and
forming them and all that stuff so I
almost immediately I think it was within
like a couple months of finding the
podcast in general and launching my
first site I was like yeah I'm gonna try
and form one there was sort of a like a
free community that Pat Flynn had back
then for the niche site duel so it was
like a big forum and I like formed a
group sort of coordinated everything I
acted as the hub I actually chatted with
everyone to make sure that they were
cool and that I could like sort of work
with them and I think that that one only
lasted maybe six weeks a lot of people
fizzled out didn't really do much
afterwards but I still got a lot out of
it because there were some people that
were like more advanced than me smarter
they were making money already so I like
learned a lot from them and then other
groups that have formed I was able to
pull in people that were like way more
experienced maybe they were making a lot
more money because I organized it right
and so I think it's cool that you're
forming the like the hub of the group in
your you're willing to put it together
and sort of like place people in your
group right
besides group are you looking for well I
think two to four is probably what you
want to do but it's not like I have a
lot of fear
and how big the group should be what do
you think yeah I think like maybe three
to four it's like really good to have
like a little bit more diversity in the
group I have been in groups where it's
just like me and one other person like
multiple times where it's just good to
have someone that knows what you're
working on and like understands our
vocabulary and they know the mistakes
and struggles that are common for people
working on those things
yeah so that size is really good I have
heard of some that are you know eight
people and it's a struggle to manage
that kind of a meeting you have to keep
it pretty rigid if you have that many
people otherwise you don't have enough
time to talk so I've only been part of a
bigger group once or twice and those are
usually maybe a little more casual more
conversational maybe there's some
accountability but I haven't been in
many of them and maybe you just don't
meet as often so some of the the groups
was like two to four people or so you
know you can meet every week or two and
actually I was gonna ask you do you have
an idea how often you want to meet
I think bi-weekly would be what I wanted
to try out first so it's definitely if
I'm going to organize it also be a
learning experience for me and I will
probably make mistakes that's how it all
was this the first time you do something
you know we'll figure it out I think and
as long as you can get those time zones
lined up it's the worst when you have
like a time change in one of the time
zones but the other one doesn't have
that like I don't think my my friend at
the time that was in Chiangmai like I
don't think they change time because
it's closer to the equator I don't know
they didn't change the time the same
time we did so like it was kind of weird
people missed a meeting and that sort of
thing so do you have a an idea of like
the agenda you want to cover in the
meeting there's some typical like
agendas out there but just curious if
you have an idea already yeah that is
you know chapter like a sharing session
and where you have some time or for you
can speak in the one-word answer
Rockview and present some ideas and get
some feedback yeah I think and then
maybe it's a more loose conversation
afterwards I think that's that's I don't
wanna I don't think it should be made
too rigid and when I say serious I don't
think this shouldn't mean that you can't
laugh and having fun this not permitted
but people have to put in a good effort
and be prepared and respect each other I
think yeah that's huge for me I'm I have
a lot of I don't know why this worked
out but I have several friends that were
in the military so they're always early
for like whatever meeting and that's
kind of like a like a test
if they're bringing a new person into
the group of friends or whatever so I
worked out because I'm pretty punctual
and like that worked out okay but
they're like 10 minutes early everywhere
the point is if you start showing up
late like people will probably call you
out because time is very valuable and
even if it's a fun thing we don't want
to be I'll have our time like
disrespected basically so now do you
have a vision on the kind of other
people you want in the group as far as
we'll just be like sort of arbitrary and
just say revenue right I think that's
probably the area that I would focus on
so what kind of people do you want in
the group well I think it's it's just
such an easy and arbitrary builder to
put put up say revenue if I'm gonna
organize it I can make it move that
would be all right but yeah should have
some experience I think I'll think about
the revenue I haven't decided yet what a
thing is gonna yeah something like that
okay cool so you don't want like a brand
new like person that hasn't done
anything you want them to have some
revenue coming in at least right yeah
brand-new person asked me to join I will
tell them go watch hundred of dogs
videos and get back to me when you're
making some money yeah let's reform your
own group cuz I wasn't making any money
when I form my first groups and slowly
you can find the right group of people
but some people may think that that's
like arbitrary because I literally use
that word but it's different struggles
and different mistakes that like people
make at different levels so if someone's
trying to figure out like how to install
a theme or something like that like
you're past that you're a few years past
that and while you could help the person
you maybe wouldn't get as much out of
the relationship and there should be
some give-and-take
now one of the big pros that I had going
for me was like I was going to organize
the meeting and
had a PMP certification so people would
whether it's right or not they were like
at least he's professional and he can
probably facilitate a meeting which I
can so worked out fine everyone got to
speak and I was able to like round up a
group of folks so I'm like well I'm not
doing anything
as far as making money but I have this
other person who's making a few hundred
dollars he's been doing it for a few
years I can manage the meeting
facilitate it make sure things were in
smoothly set up the calendar invites the
admin stuff like the silly things that
you know people often forget and it
takes time yep and it's like when one
thing to think about or not have to
worry about so I think it is important
just because like people can bring other
stuff to the table but at the same time
you want to make sure you're roughly in
the same arena the challenges that
you're going through and all that stuff
so cool well any other thoughts on like
mastermind groups or what actually would
what are you like looking to get out of
it specifically like when you're looking
at your business is there any a like
good yeah think about it like this you
have a group of people you can sort of
crowd source the problem solving of
difficult obstacles and hearing other
people's take on it and even explaining
it properly in front of other people
will make you think more critical about
your own assumptions so I think that's
some set up and also you should hold
each other accountable I think that's
also one major thing yes
yeah the accountability is huge because
if the group is operating properly they
will give you a hard time if you don't
accomplish the things that you say
you're gonna do and I've had some groups
where that actually was a little bit of
a struggle and I would challenge the
person
I don't know how it came off by the way
but it to the person recently so I know
like now he he realizes like oh he was
not doing a good job setting goals each
week a lot of times the agenda has a
goal setting section where it's just
like next week I'm gonna get XY and Z
done and he would say hey I'm gonna get
X Y Z and all the other letters of the
alphabet done and I was like hey you
know you said that last week
but like you only got a couple things
done and you actually got distracted
with something else so like it's it's
about the accountability knowing that at
least a few people are gonna ask you
about it you have to explain why you did
or didn't get that thing done so
sometimes I think some groups set it up
a little more strict these days I and in
my group that I have right now it's way
more casual and part of it is just like
chatting with people that like we know
what we're talking about and we're all
facing like similar yet a little bit
different challenges so yeah I like all
this stuff you said and I think just
having those folks that know the
vocabulary that we're using the little
things that you could just say hey I had
a great day because this thing happened
and they can appreciate it because they
know yeah that's why I've explaining my
business to my father once and I'm gonna
try it yes so you have a website yeah
that's about it yeah it's a little bit
of a struggle very good
all right Marcus we'll thanks a lot I
really appreciate it everyone you could
find the link to you know communicate
with Marcus through the forum and
there's a little bit more information
there as well as I mentioned it's
probably really good if you're very
close to that GMT time zone by a few
hours or have like flexibility to meet
during you have any idea like what time
of day or you it's open right now that
should be like I think Saturday and
Sunday
at a time where you can have two major
time zones fit in so okay like European
or US or European and Asian yeah okay
gotcha very cool well thanks Marcus and
if people have questions or anything
like that you can leave them in the
comments or shoot an email to feedback
it does show thank you thanks for
watching the video if you want to hook
up with Marcus check the link in the
description and I hope to see you on
some livestream soon if you haven't
checked out my podcast it's called Doug
show the Doug show and you can find it
on many of the podcast directories out
there so whichever one you use it's
probably there and if you don't use one
