hey miles here miles Becker calm this
video we're gonna answer the question
how do you know when to take a break
this is a user-generated question I
received and I think it's a great one
because there seems to be two major
camps in the world of entrepreneurship
there's the hustle and grind non-stop
never stop never stop never stop right
twenty two and a half hour days and then
there's the other side that's like oh
it's fun and easy and and make more why
you do less and and make lots and do
nothing right so there's these two
extremes and obviously I think you fully
understand right away that the answer is
somewhere in the middle there is some
level of balance required I do take a
lot of breaks and I'm very methodical
about how I approach that and that's
what we're gonna cover here I'm gonna
give you my approach but I want to also
offer some kind of other ideas that
might reflect you especially if you've
important for you to take rest and take
time with your family and it also is
extremely important for you to stay
really focused and really productive on
those tasks that are gonna move the
needle in your business so we'll start
with my kind of experiences and how I go
about it so personally I like to take
about three to four separate breaks
throughout my day when I wake up the
first thing I do is I take some time and
I grab a cup of coffee I come downstairs
and I work on the most important tasks
first I want to repeat important not
urgent I've talked about this a lot in
the past and ultimately for me an
important task is this video right my
content marketing or sending out my
email those are the long-term valuable
things in my business and I have a full
tank of willpower when I wake up in the
morning so I work on the most important
things first come about I would say an
hour and a half after I've started and
got that done my wife and I generally go
for a quick walk we try to get some
outside time this can be everything from
5 to 15 minutes when the the timings
right and the weather is perfect
sometimes we'll go out for an hour or
more and hike two to three different to
three miles at that point and then we
come back and again fully recharged at
this point right so what it is is when
you wake up you have a full kind of
willpower tank you're full of your
energy once you get out of the garage
and get your momentum going then when
you deplete this energy
this kind of tank of willpower that you
have it gets depleted by doing that
initial important work and then you need
to go refill it this is through rest and
for me resting is often exercised and
actual rest what would look like rest
like laying in a hammock laying down
sitting up and meditating etc taking a
nap in the afternoon type thing so
that's how I try to build my day is
blending the intense periods of work and
then recharging through rest or exercise
more intense period of work recharge
through rest and exercise more intense
period of work so back to my day I come
back from this first walk I get back to
work again around this point we're
getting up to the noon one o'clock I'll
eat I'll have a salad generally speaking
at that point I might read a little bit
and then I'll meditate midday when I
come back from the meditation I'm
usually good for another work session
from three to four or five at this point
I go out for another either hike or I'll
go paddle boarding at that point to get
a little time on the water
to get more exercise and get away from
my computer again and often I'll come
back in the evenings and I'll work till
seven eight nine and then I'll take
maybe an hour or so to watch like a show
or something to just unwind or I'll do
reading in the evenings is the other
thing that I do so again for me it's
it's I would have to say if I was to try
to compartmentalize and it's it's never
perfect numbers right I don't set my
alarm clock for this but um it's about
an hour and a half work session followed
by a 15 - sometimes - hour right 15 - an
hour break so it's it's a good solid
work period for 90 minutes and then 15
minutes of no work 90 minutes work 15
minutes no work type schedule and I mix
it up I let it be very free-flowing
Eugene Schwartz who wrote breakthrough
advertiser who in his day was by far the
best copywriter that ever lived and he's
still one of the most studied and
well-respected copywriters of all times
he would work on his sales letter for 33
minute 33 seconds and then he would get
up for five minutes
so he forced himself to work on one
project for 33 minutes straight so what
he did is I'm just showing you that he
compressed that same pattern that I used
down even more and he would literally
set like an egg timer which is like a
kitchen timer that you would kind of to
us and pick tick tick tick tick but we
all have cell phones now right
you just set that sort of alarm on your
phone you could do a 33 minute kind of
break he literally did 33 33 love love
to all threes right there but them so he
would do a 33 minute 33 seconds break
and then you would force himself to get
up for at least five minutes and then
you'd go right back and do another 33
minute session there's also something
called the Pomodoro Technique which I
think is about a 45 minute kind of cycle
of 45 minutes of intense work five
minutes of relaxation and the idea is
very similar to kind of working out
fitness and bodybuilding you want to
intensely work the muscle and then you
want to rest the muscle and then you
want intensely work the muscle and you
want to rest the muscle if you just work
the muscle every day right if you go
after arms every day and you do curls
every single day you will overwork the
muscle and you will not recuperate and
the the cells will not have a time to
regenerate regenerate and in health get
gain health and kind of build themselves
up because that's ultimately what you're
doing you stress the muscle to a point
of kind of tearing the muscle and then
it rebuilds itself and it's stronger and
bigger and that's how you grow the
muscle it's the same philosophy for us
growing our businesses so you need to
find your rhythm is the ultimate key and
I mentioned earlier if you've got a
family I wanted to touch on that because
my wife and I are both focused on a very
very similar goal right we run this
media business that we run together
we're all in on this family business we
both are kind of stride for stride
almost every single day and during these
periods of hiking and paddleboarding and
walking around and talking and resting
we are always kind of staying in touch
with each other on where we're at the
business what we're working on so we
know where each other is that if you're
the one in your family growing the
business and your spouse your kids and
everyone else is not actually involved
in the business you're gonna need to
play a little bit more of a delicate
balance right they don't understand
exactly what you're doing and you're
ultimately obviously trying to create a
better life for them so one thing you
need to do is communicate extremely
effectively you need to make sure they
understand why you're spending those
times those nights those weekends on
your laptop but then I think it's more
important than that to not just schedule
the time hustling and grinding on your
business you
have to schedule time with your family
you have to dedicate specific time every
week maybe every day that is you and
family time you need to make sure
they're getting 100% of you at least for
a specific amount of time maybe it's
every day
maybe it's every week what that is is
unique for you but that is as important
to schedule into your lifestyle as it is
to schedule in the times of hustle and
you might be like well miles but I've
got to get this going I get it but you
also have to keep your relationships
strong because what is financial success
if you don't know who your family is you
don't get to experience your kids
growing up you really lose touch with
your spouse because you became a
different person they became a different
person because you weren't connecting
and reconnecting enough I'm telling you
that level that success is not success
at all there's way too many internet
marketers in this world who have made
millions of millions of dollars who have
had failed relationship after failed
relationship and they ultimately hate
their lives and to me that's actually
the biggest failure one can achieve in
life is to make all the financial 3d
riches in the world and have none of the
soulful spiritual love heartfelt kind of
rewards and riches in the world I need
you to make sure you're figuring out a
way to get both so maybe there's a
period of time when you play with your
kids every evening and then after the
kids go to bed
your wife understands that that's your
time that you're gonna go kind of grind
and hustle or maybe it's your husband
and he understands that's your time
you're gonna go grind and hustle from 9
o'clock to 11 o'clock p.m. every single
night that's when you're working on your
business you're doing your emails you're
doing your content they know not to
distract you because they just have
great productive fun-loving time with
you up until that point right maybe they
get the six to nine and then you and
your business get the nine to eleven and
that becomes your cycle then on the
weekends you have to figure out a way to
make sure you're doing fun things with
your family your spending family time
because that's what it's actually all
about and you need to have those
feelings of everything's working it
gives you time away through your
business when I'm out paddleboarding
when I'm not hiking when I'm out goofing
off with Melanie going through Botanical
Gardens which is something we love to do
when we travel we'll go wander through
Gardens I'm still I'm still working on
business right like I'm there I'm
present for sure I'm not trying to think
about it but ideas are synthesizing my
subconscious mind is is firing off these
little neuro synapse fires in my brain
thinking like who what if we did that or
what about this or you might see an ad
on a billboard in a random part of town
that kind of makes you think huh
that's a unique twist on an idea maybe
if I did something like this on my
Facebook Ads boom boom boom boom boom
and you start synthesizing other ideas
in the real world I've seen so many
times that people will spend just 24/7
trying to work on their business and
what happens is you start having really
really unproductive work you end up
spending time wasting time on Instagram
on Facebook on these really low priority
tasks that are gonna have very very
short shelf life kind of benefits for
your business right like an Instagram
post might last for an afternoon if
you're lucky two days if you had a viral
Instagram post before it gets ripped off
and reposted on Reddit and everywhere
else but a great blog post can live for
years and years and years a great video
can bring you in hundreds of thousands
of viewers and subscribers over the
course of five to ten years and you need
to be sure you're working on those big
things that are actually gonna move the
needle in your business we call them
small hinges that swing big doors in
your business that's what you need to be
working on and then get out get away get
some exercise I think in the idea of
rest I look at exercise as a form of
rest from my business obviously that's
not resting in the traditional sense but
in a way it's resting my brain from
being a hundred percent engaged getting
over to something else when I'm
paddleboarding I'm balancing I'm looking
around for boats on the water I'm just
admiring the the trees and the lake and
the sunset it gets me out of that
element and that's when I have my
inspired ideas you maybe have had
inspired ideas hit you in the shower
before that's something a lot of people
say it's because you're not necessarily
exactly thinking about something you're
there you're going through the motions
you're showering you're kind of having a
unique experience and all of a sudden
wait a minute
I could do boom boom boom boom boom and
you have this idea and you like running
out of the shower drying off trying to
hit the white border
take some notes down so you don't lose
that inspired moment and those moments
will happen if you give yourself time to
rest when Eugene Schwartz would take
those five minute breaks between the 33
minute sessions working on the actual
sales copy he was working on those were
the moments when the inspired ideas
would come in they need to go work on it
for 33 minutes and he'd get away and
he'd get another inspired idea and that
was the pattern that got him through
these world-class sales letters that he
wrote that brought in hundreds and
hundreds of millions of dollars and this
is back in the 40s 50s and 60s I hope
this video has been helpful for you and
I really hope that you take the time to
analyze your kind of day and think of it
as energy management is really the key
of what we're talking about here because
you want to make sure that you're
capturing these moments in your life
when you have ample ample ample
willpower that for me is early in the
morning so if you feel like you don't
have much extra time available and when
you get home from work the kids are
there and there's a lot of distractions
around consider waking up an hour and a
half before you actually currently wake
up that might mean setting your alarm
clock for five o'clock in the morning
guess what that's what I used to do when
I worked a full-time job and I had an
hour and a half commute every day I
would set my alarm for 4:30 5 o'clock in
the morning and I would work before I
went to work so I would work up until
about 7:30 when I had to shower and
actually get ready for work that gave me
a couple hours in the morning of hyper
productive time went into the day job
did lunch worked a little bit on lunch
went into the Jay job went back home had
dinner went for a walk with my wife and
then we both would work in the evenings
so figure out how you can create rhythms
of intense work and intense rest intense
work and intense rest and the best kind
of intense rest
I believe if you've got a family is
playtime fun time get 100% away from the
computers and the devices go out get
exercise go for hikes with your family
go for bike rides with your family
really kick the the blood-pumping right
get that heart pumping get the blood
energy flowing around circulate the
blood through your body through your
brain you'll be amazed of what happens
when you find the balance in life and
finally maybe I'll do a whole video on
this is learn some hacks to get great
sleep at night I wear
specific kind of glasses when the Sun
Goes Down they block out all of the blue
light I run flux app and Twilight app on
my phones which are designed to pull the
blue light out having a lot too much
blue light at night whether it's TV your
phone your tablet etc or just the lights
you have in your house that can actually
keep you awake because it triggers the
melatonin or serotonin I'll do a
dedicated video on that but be sure
you're really kind of focusing on
getting good sleep when you can even if
that six hours make sure it's as good of
our six hours of sleep as you can drink
a lot of water remember that your body
is mostly water remember to replenish
your body and eat as clean as you
possibly and comfortably can
I eat a 100% organic plant-based diet on
purpose a lot of leafy greens a lot of
different colored vegetables and fruits
and that is because it's easy for my
body to process it brings in a ton of
nutrients and those nutrients are what
my brain uses what my heart uses what my
body uses for all these things so I can
keep the energy up throughout my day
because energy management is really the
name of the game when you're growing
your business online this absolutely is
a marathon it's an extreme triple
marathon if you will right this is way
more than a normal marathon to grow a
truly successful business online and one
of the big things you have to do is to
manage your energy in a marathon if you
sprint too much in the beginning you're
gonna run out of gas and you're gonna
fall flat on your face so it's about
finding those rhythms those cycles and
creating those habits that are gonna
give you the intense focused energy
times then the actual 100% away from all
of your devices when I go on a hike when
I go out on paddleboard I don't bring my
phone I don't bring anything I have no
devices at all other than my paddleboard
right an analogue floatation device that
I go paddle around a lake type thing so
so figure out what that is for you it
might be hiking it might be biking but I
do recommend that that you have times
when you're not plugged in to the
earbuds you're not plugged into the
social media world you're not listening
to podcasts you're just there enjoying
that moment with your family maybe just
enjoying that moment in nature and
during that moment on your bike enjoying
just walking around your neighborhood
enjoying being up the gym lifting
weights to really boost that energy
through the day you'll find when you
take these rest
periods throughout your day you'll come
back and you'll be more productive the
moment you get back then the moment you
were before you left right you come out
of these low points back with another
burst of energy when you start to mix in
exercise in gym time that's gonna be
another burst of energy maybe you start
meditating for 20 minutes a day boom
there's another burst of energy after
each one of those little pauses you come
up with reinvigorated bursts of energy
you've taken time to allow your
subconscious mind to deliver you new
subconscious new interesting kind of
intuitive ideas for you to work on new
test ideas will come out of that and
you'll have the energy to implement them
and that my friend has been my secret to
success through energy management and I
hope this has helped you if you've
enjoyed this video give me a thumbs up
if you want to see a video about how of
some of my sleep kind of tricks that I
use to try to really improve my level of
sleep so when I do sleep I get a very
deep Delta a deep REM state of sleep so
when I wake up I'm refreshed and I'm
full of that willpower tang
leave me a comment say yeah make the
video about the sleep I want to learn
more about sleep I will happily get that
to you I might even make like a sleep
meditation if you have trouble sleeping
let me know I want to know if that's
something we should talk about give me a
thumbs up share this if you know
somebody who's maybe overworking
themselves and maybe a little rest could
actually improve their performance it's
proven in every sport in the world that
a little bit of rest goes a very long
way for improving that athletes
performance and I think the truth is the
same for us here in the entrepreneurial
world and on that note I'm gonna call it
on this video I thank you for your time
and I look forward to connecting with
you on the next video
remember intense periods of work intense
periods of rest spend time with your
family go do fun things you have to
enjoy life while you have it that is the
goal here and I look forward to
connecting with you on the next video
got another video coming out Monday so
subscribe and I'll catch you then be
well
