hello welcome what's up it's Doug
Pennington here and this is the webinar
the free training on proving your
conversion rate I see we have a handful
of people on please let me know if you
can hear me because sometimes this
doesn't go well I think we may be
alright today because I did the check in
a couple weeks ago actually just one
week ago I did a free training and just
like this and the audio is all messed up
so I learned from that mistake and I
think we're doing better so it's cool we
have a few people on it see for hands-on
and you're saying you could hear me and
it's great
JK's on that's awesome as well so great
it looks like we have a handful of
people on more than last time and that's
only I'm like I don't know like five or
six and I'm not sure what the what the
reason for that was so anyway we got
Alex on we got David as well cool and
maybe I just have to tell more people
about it Jaron is on also so cool we got
the we got the crowd here which is nice
so if it's your first time on one of
these trainings let me know or maybe
you're new to the YouTube channel or
even the niche site project blog so just
let us know in the chat welcome if
you're new and it looks like we have a
lot of veterans around
we got Wesley as well yeah so I hope
everybody's doing well today
one of the reasons I picked this
presentation number one I haven't done
it in a while and then the other is the
retail season is coming up actually it's
like right now I can see like traffic
going a little bit higher than it has
been and I also see people are buying
more stuff since last Sunday like I can
just visibly see like more purchases and
earnings are starting to go up let me
know if you see the same thing as well
JK is the first time we're here Kevin
what's up and basically the people just
buy stuff and
here in the US was Veterans Day on
Monday and like some people may already
be like getting into the holiday spirit
so anyway I'm gonna go over 17 different
things some of them may apply to you and
your site some of them may not I'm sure
at least like one or two you're gonna
think hey I need to try this and I
recommend like testing all these on a
small scale if you have a lot of posts
on your site it may be difficult to you
know go through and like make a change
on every single one but hopefully you'll
get some good ideas from this and maybe
some things that you could change like
just moving forward not just for the
holiday season so Tim is on as well and
thanks everyone for letting me know
this working so I'm gonna go ahead and
move over to the presentation if first I
mean I want people to say on now but if
for some reason you need to go which
happens sometimes though there will be a
replay like I'm not trying to sell
anything I'll mention my course at the
end because people do ask about it but
I'm not trying to push anything no no
high pressure sales or anything like
that just going over the president
for hopping on and joining us today
especially all the newcomers and while
everyone yeah newcomers people that have
been to these before and you know folks
that watch the YouTube channel so 17
ways to improve income boost conversions
I'm Doug Pennington you can hear me
already asked about that earlier so
quick question who has a full-time job
just trying to understand the audience
that we have so that I can tailor the
presentation accordingly Jaron has a
full-time gig just let me know in the
chat here
I'm Doug Huntington founder of a niche
site project it sounds like since there
are a few people that are new I will go
through a little bit more of an intro
that's a picture of me and my dogs down
there Brody has passed away but that's
an older picture of my dad and I did an
old faithful
so with Brody he joined us down there
that day and then George is she is
sitting at my feet with one of those
sticky you know balls that she she has
one of her toys she carries around so
why should you listen to me so I have a
past track record I've created some
terrible affiliate sites have created
some good ones I've sold a couple of
them I've done some nice case studies
and I've coached others for I think
about four and a half years or so and I
have done a lot of guest posting and
guest blogging on bigger blogs I'll tell
you some of those in a second and I got
started with affiliate marketing in 2013
after listening to the smart passive
income podcast I thought it was a total
scam it sounded really weird I didn't
understand anything I didn't know people
could make money online or anything like
that but I got into it got really
obsessed started a few sites and pretty
quick like within six months if you're
doing the math with me within six months
or so I like launched my site niche site
project and started coaching people
the reason is because I have a PMP that
is a project management professional
certification so I had a background of
like creating templates and frameworks
and just sort of treating things as a
project so that was very helpful and I
didn't see anyone and I still don't
really see many people who are project
managers and also do internet marketing
especially affiliate marketing so Kevin
says you have a full-time gig tim has
been doing oh Fillion is your full-time
job so that's cool and it sounds like
most people have have something that
they're working on at least we're not
retired right so a few people have some
sites in place okay so moving on it
sounds like some of you all are talking
about that feel free to talk amongst
yourself as well but how many people are
running a site currently how many people
are thinking about starting a side just
curious about that as well I'm so I've
been featured or mentioned on a bunch of
blogs some bigger ones some smaller ones
and those are sort of the highlights
there and it I've actually been featured
a couple time on social triggers as like
one of the success stories for a couple
of the products the ads like one is
rayon email marketing one is around
courses so okay I always put this
timeline in here because people usually
just talk about the highlight reel and I
think it's important for everyone to
understand it's a long journey in fact I
was chatting with one of the success
stories one of the people that I
featured on my youtube channel and they
they just sent me an email the other day
were just catching up a little bit and
he mentioned that wow this really takes
longer than I expected and it's true
like even when you have some things
figured out you'll find that it still
takes longer everything takes longer
than you think and for me it's becoming
more apparent the
or that I like the more experience I
have the more I know the less I think I
know if that makes sense so I'm just
aware of how much I don't know even
though I know so much more than I did
before it just it really it kind of
catches up with you so that you realize
that there's just a whole world out
there and there's only so much
information that you can like hold in
your brain or I guess consume at one
time so this timeline here illustrates
ups and downs and I've I at this point
I'm not doing any gray hat activity
which is like private blog networks or
you know intentionally building links in
sort of a spammy way it's not the topic
today so I won't go too far into it but
I got burned a couple times just because
that was what people did back then all
my mentors from afar all the people that
I learned from like Pat Flynn and
Spencer Hawes and the people in know had
digital which was Hayden Miyamoto some
other folks that are doing like much
more like non scammy things now they
were just learning from other people and
they were using link pyramids and link
wheels and I remember we're reading on
Pat Flynn site smart passive income
about how to do link building the right
way and basically it's like go to fiber
buy a bunch of links set up some web 2.0
use an article spinner I mean it was all
like super like these days we would call
it you know very scammy
and just not cool but that was I mean I
don't know if it's still I'm smart
passive income but that's literally like
the road map that I followed which got
my sites penalized and what can you do
except to like change what you're
working on so anyway I've had some ups
and downs and there's some some
highlight wheels and some good stories
in there but just remember
your if wherever you are in your journey
like it takes a while to get to where
you're going all right
sounds like and I asked a question about
running sites so Kevin says you have an
O an itch site and authority site Kevin
and I'm interested how do you with the
difference between the niche site and an
authority site just curious to me it's
just branding and I think they're
basically the same thing
jaren it has a few sites tim has two
sites marc has a niche site
JK's running four sites all right in Tim
says it took six months to earn his
first dollar and Anthony's yet to make a
sale and Joe says your month your eight
month just passed and you made $100 for
the first time cool and I think that's
about average anywhere between like four
and eight months to make your first
hundred bucks
Kevin says a niche site is one that you
put about 30 or 40 articles and just let
it sit okay an authority site is
something you're working on multiple
times a day so okay let me just
challenge your assumption there or your
definition which is fine we all have
different definitions you've heard of
this site backlinko
right backlinko com so if you go check
there's not that many posts there
something like 40 or 50 all right would
you call that a niche site just because
there's not that many posts or would you
consider that an authority site because
of the quality of the content and the
links that it has going to it and just
I'm just asking I mean it doesn't really
matter what we call them I think a niche
site in the authority site or both
affiliate sites and some people can have
a site with 45 posts and make 10k a
month that this site here oops lost the
this site here that I sold with a
partner in 2017
that site only had 45 posts and it was
making 10k a month we added more and
increased the earnings but the point is
just the number okay and Kevin says it's
not a technical definition that's just
how you classify okay so and I was gonna
say I mean the point is you could have a
big site and call it an authority site
but it may not make as much money as a
site with fewer posts or you know
backlinko I think is an authority site
however it doesn't fit in the definition
that a lot of people use and again in my
opinion it's just a branding situation
so okay let's get back to the topic the
Q&A is at the end but as you can see
since we have a small crowd I can answer
as we go most of the way if it's not
relevant to what I'm talking about it'll
be best to hold it towards the end and
we can get to it there
so why niche sites so I think sounds
like a lot of people have their sites
already so I don't have to convince you
but if you are just getting started or
someone watching later they're basically
really cheap and easy to get started
so generally like if you wanted to you
can head over it up like SiteGround sign
up for hosting launch a wordpress site
before i finish this presentation like
it's very cheap to get going it'll cost
you know you even if you have to pay
like for a year of hosting all upfront
and buy a premium theme like it's
probably only gonna be like 150 bucks or
so and if you compare that to starting
any other business it's pretty low and
you can do it pretty pretty um like
quickly like really quickly so from
there you learn a lot about different
aspects so you will learn about
WordPress I didn't know anything about
WordPress at all I didn't even know what
it was I never even heard of it when I
first started online doing affiliate
marketing I didn't know about SEO and
basically you can
earn a large set of skills that you'll
be able to use elsewhere and even if you
end up you know launching a site maybe
you make a little bit of money but it
wasn't really your thing you didn't like
the process you can still take those
skills and go somewhere else and do
something with them you can start an
agency helping like local businesses
with their SEO for example one of the
other things you can do is set up a
Content company a Content agency where
maybe you hire some writers from up work
you just manage them you work with the
clients and then you assign the work you
don't actually do any of the writing and
then you can you know charge your
clients quite a bit the services out
there pretty expensive so you probably
can within a year I would say launch a
six-figure business I don't know how the
profit margin would be exactly but I
mean you should be able to launch a
business doing content for affiliate
marketers
within a year like and be able to do a
full time so the point is you can learn
a large set of skills there ok so now to
the presentation I'm just gonna let's
see yeah check in in the in the chat
here so David's asking a bunch of
questions get into the sandbox and stuff
like that ok cool
in Tim mentions is a good data point so
Tim site is nine months old now you get
100 to 150 visitors a day making about
$500 a month what would you say is your
average product crisis I'm gonna make a
guess I bet it's about 100 bucks
ok moving on to the presentation here
there's a lot of there's a lot of
content here so I'm going to go fast and
it seems like we got good discussion
going on so hopefully we can hopefully
we can continue with that discussion ok
so number one you
get the right kind of traffic to your
site and this is sort of the the thing
that you may not be able to like
implement right right away and have it
kick in for like Black Friday but if you
can tailor your keywords a little bit
better you may be able to tweak it maybe
in time for Christmas
depending on how old your site is okay
so get the right kind of traffic and I'm
talking about buyers keywords and in
general it's going to be like the
product name and then review or maybe
even the specific model name and then
review best and product name I'll give
you some examples to what kind of planks
should I get and some examples would be
like a kitchen faucet review or like
this again the specific model so like a
Moen five thousand like faucet or
something like that it's a best kitchen
faucet or what kind of kitchen faucet
should I get okay
so those are examples what you don't
want is just a random like key like a
random word where no one will really
have the intent of buying anything you
want to have someone interested in
buying something if you don't then
you're just not going to be able to
convert very well after that long tail
low competition traffic is gonna be
really helpful especially like if you
are working on a site and then maybe
it's on the younger side maybe it's
under six months going for the keyword
golden ratio type terms that's gonna be
really helpful and I think you can't
skip the sandbox I don't think you can
skip the sandbox but if you go after
very low competition keywords you'll be
able to rank those faster and I have my
own opinion on the sandbox and all that
stuff but it does look like six months
does seem to be sort of a a point where
your traffic can grow a little faster
you can get some better rankings
so if you
know what the key word golden ratio is
basically it's a data-driven way to find
keywords that are underserved online you
take the number of all in title results
all in title is an advanced Google
search command and then you divide it by
the local monthly searches usually
that's going to be the u us but whatever
your local monthly searches is and you
want the LMS to be under 250 and if you
can find keywords that have a ratio a kg
are under 0.25 then you'll be in good
shape okay so this is how you type it in
there's a ton of videos on YouTube on
this topic so I'm not gonna go too in
depth here but you take the all in title
or you type all in title colon and then
whatever the search string is you don't
want to use quotes around this you just
want to type it in just like it looks
there again there's a bunch of videos on
YouTube on it so all you have to do is
go to my channel or actually could just
Google Keyword golden ratio find my
channel and then you'll find a bunch of
videos about it okay number three use
international Amazon Associates programs
and generally there are like seven
countries to focus on I think a couple
more countries may have been added but
you can you know look I'm not gonna read
all these out here the thing is there's
a couple countries that make it not so
easy to sign up for the program so I'm I
think it's like there's several but I
think India and like Japan you have to
have a bank account in the country to
open an associate's program so it's a
bit of an hurt a hurdle and if you you
know if you really wanted to then you
you could do it but what you really want
to do is take a look at your traffic and
then see where you're getting enough
traffic to make it worthwhile
some countries don't have an associate
program so can't you can join there of
course but in this case when we're
looking
the traffic you can look on Google
Analytics of course and then you can see
that you know 27.8% of the traffic is
from the US you got UK Canada and
Germany and if you total that up that's
another that's like thirteen percent
about fifteen percent so when you look
at this as like fifteen percent of the
traffic is coming from those other three
countries however fifteen percent
compared to 27 percent well I think 15
percent is about 60 65 percent of like
twenty seven point eight percent that
said if you added those other programs
you could stand to increase your
earnings by about 65 percent probably
not exactly that and maybe a little bit
lower but that's a great way to increase
your earnings with the existing traffic
by utilizing the international programs
so that said cool thing Amazon
Associates I think they just rolled out
in the last week or so like a global
dashboard so you can see all your
earnings aggregated without having to
log in to the other programs they were
all linked up before but you had to go
log into each one of them so next a call
to action above the fold so this is
probably the number one everyone pay
attention here basically when I review
someone sites or site and they're having
me you know critique it give them an
audit most of the time there is not a
call to action not an affiliate link up
near the top it's usually like further
down sometimes it's all the way at the
bottom which is a little bit insane to
me
but if you can put a call to action
above the fold that's a good thing so
this is an example from the wire cutter
best action camera and you can see in
the first sentence there they have a
call to action in an affiliate link it's
not a strong call to action but they're
just saying like here's the best one and
that's an affiliate link over to Amazon
I mean just as a side note you can see
that they are using a buyer's keyword as
the title there a right next number five
this is to test different calls to
actions so you can use a text version
like I've showed here I like text
personally then you can you know write
whatever you want and people know it's a
link sometimes if it's an image people
don't know that that's a link especially
like on a mobile device or a tablet but
you could also use like a button or
something like that
and you can see on the wire cutter they
have they've changed it up just a little
bit the screenshot is a little bit old
here but they have like a feature like
product they have a feature box for
products and you'll see the title of the
product you'll see the name of the model
a little blurb you'll see the button
usually they'll have a price there
they're pulling it from API and then
after that you'll have you know usually
the image will be an affiliate link so
you can test different things and then
you can use like a heat map or use heat
map software to see like are people
clicking on certain things over others
and you know further I can't remember if
I mention this specifically but the
point of testing the different calls to
action is like you could in your in a
table right you can maybe put an image
or don't put an image or you can put a
button or you can use text and there's
like all these things that you could
test and see what works better and I
think it probably depends on what else
you have going on on your site so I
don't know that there's a you know a
specific like this is always going to
work it's something like you always
have to test it which I'll talk about
again in a little bit towards the end
here okay
so number six is he used text links
throughout the content and again I like
the text links and I think they convert
pretty well for me in my opinion they
come off a little bit less salesy and
pushy than if you have a button or some
other you know and actually buttons with
the things that are a little bit pushy
cuz they look more official but text
links and you can see again on the wire
cutter usually when they're mentioning a
product not always but a lot of times
they'll mention a product and then
they'll make that product title name the
affiliate link so that's a great way to
do it I personally like to put a note in
parentheses after I mentioned the model
in place an affiliate link I say like
see on Amazon or get more details on the
Amazon the reason why is I want to tell
someone what to expect I don't want to
surprise someone sometimes in the past
I've clicked on a link and I thought it
was going to go to another post on their
site to give me more information about
something but it ended up going to you
know a shopping cart or Amazon and I
didn't want to go to Amazon so I always
try and tell people what to expect and I
think that helps my conversion rate be
high but it also may like reduce the
people that aren't interested in seeing
the product a little bit which is fine
if they don't want to see the product on
the Amazon I don't want them to click on
it and go over there if they're not
interested so I'm just qualifying them
and I think text links are effective
personally okay next number seven using
comparison tables
okay so tables are a good way to present
information in a concise area and it's
easier most of the time to see specs for
especially technical specs in a table
versus like a narrative
so you can imagine if you saw these
items compared in a narrative just in
sentence paragraph form it's not going
to be as easy to follow as this table
and the little checkbox is there now if
you are not sure what you should put in
your table that's okay I recommend you
head over to Amazon and take a look now
don't copy what Amazon has but you can
get some good ideas about what you can
add in there you can also head over to
the manufacturer site usually if they
have multiple products or they are
comparing their product to other
companies models then they will also
have tables you can even look at the
like the user manual for some of the
products sometimes they will have
comparison tables also and if you like
use different resources then you'll
actually be able to put together like a
unique table that maybe no one else
really has and I can I've done that a
few times where it just ends up being a
pretty good resource because a lot of
times let's say like you know GoPro has
this information on there different
models here they don't usually have
information on another company's product
lines so if you could combine different
company's products then you potentially
are serving the actual searcher better
because that's what people care about
right
GoPro wants people to compare the
different GoPro models but an actual
consumer is gonna look at several
different brands because maybe they
don't care what brand they get they just
want the best product so if you need
ideas go do some research and you should
be able to come up with something in
general I think simpler tables are
better so if you if you are trying to
put in too much information I would
recommend you take that table and like
move it further down in your post and
near the top have a very straightforward
a simple table similar to what Amazon
may have Amazon has pretty simple tables
this is one of
complex I've seen okay
recommend related products so this
actually goes really well with the
action camera idea because there's a
bunch of little attachment deal so you
can kit for an action camera and if
you're not sure what kind of products
that you can recommend again you can go
to Amazon and see like this customers
who also bought this or who bought this
item also bought these so again for an
action camera there's like accessory
kids extra batteries memory cards all
this stuff so basically you can just go
to Amazon and get ideas and then at the
you know towards the end of your post or
during a transition point in your post
you can say hey if you're if you're
getting this thing then you probably
want to get the accessory kit too and
then another way to get someone over to
Amazon okay number nine use high quality
header images so I go back and forth on
this one depending on really how feeling
but we can look at an example here this
is from baby gear lab and this is just a
great way to let the person know that
they're in the right place so if you're
looking for diaper bags you see there
they're using a diaper bag it's not a
stock image with like a white background
they're actually out there in a park it
looks like they're in a forest or
something like that and that's a great
way to let the reader know that they're
in the right place the caveat here I
said I'd go back and forth on this I
kind of like having a smaller image
still high quality but a smaller image
so that the the copy starts right away
so you could qualify someone but the
alternative is write a big image and
then they'll start scrolling down and
you just want someone just to start
scrolling down and a lot of sites do use
a large feature image and some other
sites
they don't use a feature image at the
top at all they use you know some
smaller images and they just start with
a text right away
so either way can be fine and if you
have access to you know real authentic
pictures that are not stock I think that
is like the best way to go because it
indicates that like maybe you own the
product and or you've tested it okay
number 10 don't offer too many choices
so this may seem counterintuitive but I
mean when people are confused because
there's too many choices sometimes they
don't make a decision at all so in
general I like to have no more than like
five recommendations five products here
I mentioned four to five seems to be
ideal so again on the diaper bag from
baby gear lab they have their table
which is they have awesome tables tons
of information but by default they only
show five products you can see all of
the products together and the table by
clicking view all but it's not by
default I believe that is because they
realize that I want to give someone too
many options in fact I think that is why
affiliate sites do well because if you
go over to Amazon and you type in diaper
bag you may get you know 400 I have no
idea you may get hundreds of results and
it's confusing you don't know what to
choose they probably seem very similar
in fact I can't remember what I was
picking up the other day on Amazon Oh is
getting like like a water bottle that
has like a bowl attached to it like so
dog can drink out of it for Georgie and
there were like ten items that all
looked identical
like they ordered them from the same
Factory and they just had different
logos and I was like I don't know which
one to pick here doesn't really matter
but the point is don't give too many
choices if you want to have more again I
recommend putting a smaller simpler
table near the top and then if you want
to have a more complex table with
more information maybe more products you
can put that deeper into the article and
I've done that before because sometimes
you know there's a lot of specs that you
want to cover in your table but you
don't want to overwhelm someone right
away
you wanna overwhelm later okay so again
to the four and five choices the wire
cutter I picked another review over
there and they seem to do like three to
five models in general they may mention
some other products but they highlight
the top three to five depending on what
it is
okay next provide accurate reviews this
may seem silly to even mention but what
I've seen especially if you hire writers
to do this or if you're just getting
started
you might make the each of the product
sound great you may say may let's say
you have four products you're reviewing
one of them's like ten bucks three of
them are like seventy-five to a hundred
dollars right so you have a few items
one of them super cheap and if you make
