Keyword Research Webinar For Affiliate Marketing & Niche Sites

welcome to the keyword research webinar
it's a free training I'm Doug Pennington
from the itch site project that looks
like we have a handful of people on so
welcome give me a shout in the chat let
me know that you could hear me let me
know where you're from say hello and
welcome so today we're talking about key
words as I mentioned and I'm gonna burn
a little time I'll be honest with you it
takes a few minutes for everybody to hop
on here but we have a good presentation
today if you're watching the replay
later I'm recording this like and if
you're watching a much later I'm
recording this live and we're one month
is September it's getting a little
chilly the reason why I'm telling you
this is my hands are a little cold I
just went out and threw the frisbee with
Georgie who is in the presentation a
little bit later just briefly though
she's sitting with my feet here and yeah
so let me Chilly little windy out there
which is kind of you know it's nice it's
it gets a little warm here in Montana
over the summer it's a short you know
warm period but overall I'm happy that
it's turning to fall weather right now
all right so let's get to it
it looks like we have a small set of
people today at least so far and no one
has mentioned that they can hear me but
I'm gonna assume that everything's
working ok I did the test and rebooted
my machine and all the business I'm
supposed to do so as I mentioned before
this is keyword research for affiliate
sites
I have Mitch site listed here but really
this applies for any sort of you know
keyword research that you are doing so
you may have to take some ideas and
apply them to your own specific
situation but in general most people are
probably interested in the affiliate
site angle by the way let me know if you
have an affiliate site in place already
or if you're just getting started
Rick says you could hear me fine thanks
and everyone feel free to let me know
where you're from and say hello ok
so also getting into it the early part
of this is a lot of an intro so I'm Doug
comes in I'm the founder of niche site
project and let me know if it's the
first time that you've been on one of
these live sessions just curious that's
Georgie and myself over in Newport
Oregon we went there a few few months
ago it was nice nice Beach it was a
little chilly and windy there that day
as well
Andy's for the UK and Ricky didn't
mention where you're from that's all
right
so I blog a niche site project I've been
doing it for about five years that's
when I first found affiliate marketing
and at this point I do a lot of YouTube
stuff I've been spending a lot of time
doing YouTube videos and it's been
interesting this is another story for
another day
Rick's from Allen Texas cool okay and
I've been featured on a lot of different
sites over time
you probably recognize several of the
name so either I was featured or
mentioned or if there's a podcast maybe
I was on their podcast or something like
that but I've made the rounds over the
years and this is kind of the why should
you listen to me section just in case
you don't know who I am or anything like
that but I have been around and I share
case studies and stuff like that in
general
I was also featured on social triggers
last year at some point so that was I'm
very proud of that one that's a big blog
I add the timeline in here just as a
reference for as a reminder to myself
but also like I've had ups and downs
I've made some mistakes over time and a
lot of times when people share their
success stories it's really just the
highlight reel they don't mention the
times that they tried something and
failed or the the fact that it wasn't an
overnight success and mine my journey
has been all over the place and you can
see the literal roller coaster shape in
here where its ups and downs and things
have been going
well for a little while which is great
and it was about a year ago so the site
for it was an affiliate site for 235,000
which was great so just curious let me
know when you first heard about niche
sites and stuff like that affiliate
marketing in general for me it was back
and I'll refer back to the timeline
I found the smart passive income back in
April 2013 before that I didn't know
anything about affiliate marketing niche
sites or making money online anything
like that
brand new is very exciting to learn all
this new stuff and after you know I had
a couple weeks of exposure to the smart
passive income podcast with Pat Flynn I
was like I want to try this I want to
test something out and that's when I
launched my first few sites the first
few sites were totally a flop but I
didn't know what I was doing which is
pretty common a lot of people do that
they get started and then they kind of
figure it out along the way they
realized that you know maybe the
resources they studied were a little bit
out of date which was the case for me I
was reading stuff it was a couple years
old and then once I got to a point that
I realized that I was doing stuff that
wasn't the best practice at the time
then I backtracked and figured out you
know what I need to work on so Rick says
that you saw my keyword golden ratio
videos about a week ago and you're
interested in finding good keywords you
started an inch site three or four
months ago but the keywords seemed to be
too competitive okay this will be
perfect for you then alright so I'll
mention the Q&A is at the end so if you
have the opportunity to mark your
question as a question that'll be
helpful it looks like we have a smaller
crowd than I expected well looks like
there's only about a dozen people on
right now so if you ask questions and it
flows well then I'll go ahead and answer
but in general I'll answer the questions
at the end sometimes if I'm going to
flow it's bad if I stop the other thing
is if you have any technical
difficulties if the video freezes if the
audio stops hit the refresh button
usually that alleviates it sometimes it
is on the server side or my side or
something but a lot of times if you hit
the refresh it'll take care of it it
there should be a button near the screen
where you're watching this
additionally mention it in the chat
sometimes other people will be able to
confirm you were the tech issues or not
but let us know in the chat and I'm
watching the chat as well so questions
at the end if there's a tech issue hit
refresh a lot of times that helps so
we're talking about keyword research
today and I mentioned it before but this
will generally apply to any keyword
research any content however we're
generally talking about niche sites or
affiliate sites today quick definition
some people call these authority sites
essentially an authority site an image
site is the same thing to me and to most
people if you start talking about them
it's just an affiliate site my primary
focus is Amazon affiliate sites but any
sort of affiliate marketing should be
right in the sweet spot of the keyword
research we're gonna talk about today
and I put this quote in here as two
methods or maybe a million and then some
but principles are few the man who
grasps principles can successfully
select his own methods
the man who tries methods ignoring
principles is sure to have trouble it's
an emerson quote although i'm told it's
not Ralph Waldo Emerson but a different
one I need to update this slide
basically you can emulate and copy the
steps from someone else but really if
you take away the principles about what
we're talking about today in this
presentation or in others from the kgr
videos or other content on youtube if
you can kind of dissect the how and why
and the
principles behind things like you'll be
way better off when things change as
they always do when things change if you
don't understand the underlying
principles behind it then you're gonna
be confused and stuck and you won't
you'll have to you know find someone
else to copy so we're gonna go over four
main things today types of keywords
keyword volumes target volumes and the
keyword golden ratio we have four kinds
of keywords we're gonna go over those so
these are by now these are like
pre-purchase people are gonna probably
buy something in the next few minutes a
lot of times these or something like
coupon codes or someone's looking for a
discount or something like that and
these literally or keywords that people
are gonna like buy something in a couple
minutes
product keywords now this is a little
bit earlier in the buying cycle these
are typically you're like research-based
and these are the ones that we really
like these are the ones we want to go
after so product type keywords there are
also informational keywords and these
are like the majority of keywords online
but these are a lot of times how to or
the best way to and in that sort of
thing general information or tire
kickers and these are you know a huge
set of keywords as well and they're
generally like people looking to get the
first piece of information about a
certain item so maybe you don't know
anything about like looking for devices
around here maybe you don't know
anything about a wireless mouse like a
Bluetooth wireless mouse so you just
look that up and there maybe it's kind
of a bad example but there may be like a
definition on like what a wireless mouse
is and what Bluetooth is together that
sort of thing you'll notice hopefully
that product informational
highlighted those are the ones that were
mainly interested in for affiliate
marketing so either it's a how-to type
article or it's something like a product
research situation so informational some
helpful info how-to info the product is
this specific you know product and we'll
talk a little bit more about this how
these keywords look as well sort of the
format actually I'll just mention it now
so the product type is like best and
then the product type so it's like best
ballpoint pen that sort of thing the
informational would be how do you choose
a ballpoint pen now the cool thing is
for the informational you know what
they're trying to figure out the problem
they're trying to solve the searcher so
if you know that then you can often
recommend a product that is related that
will be helpful for them to do the job
cheaper solve their problem faster or
make it easier in some way so product
and informational those are the ones
that you should be interested in the
keywords search volumes are important as
well so when I first started five years
ago the search volumes that people
recommended were you know four thousand
to ten thousand and over time I've
started to gravitate towards lower
volume keywords which we'll get into the
details here so these keyword volumes
are my own opinion I made these up just
to classify the different search volume
ranges so that we can have a you know
discussion about it knowing that we're
talking about certain volume ranges so
local monthly searches LMS is often
abbreviated that goes back to your
geography so most people are going to be
targeting the US so you use the US
version of Google if you're targeting
some other geography you use that of
course the volumes will be different I
think just generally the u.s. search
volumes are higher
that's what we're talking about here so
very high nine thousand searches per
month or above high is 2500 to nine
thousand medium 720 to 2500 low is 250
to 720 and ultra low and very long tails
those are under 250 all the way down to
zero by the way all the way down to zero
if you see a Google autosuggest or a
related search in the search volume zero
it's still a valid keyword because
Google is telling you that people search
for it so these are the ranges and
typically the higher search volumes take
longer to rank they have they require
more links to rank well and there's more
competition why is there more
competition well it's probably more
profitable because more people are
searching for it and if there's more you
know
money and profit in that niche in those
sets of keywords for example then there
will be more competition the market just
dictates that the lower search volumes
are faster to rank take fewer links and
there's less competition so just their
opposite here and as you you know go
into the longtail area there's more and
more of the keywords of course the
search volumes are lower but there's
plenty of them out there now what
volumes do we target based on those
ranges that I just mentioned so in
general you're gonna want to focus on
the lower ranges especially when you're
starting a site like Rick maybe you've
started a site you're not getting too
much traction and you're like I really
want to get some traffic because you
know let's look at this realistically
Rick I'm sure you spend a lot of time on
the site right you spend a lot of time
on it probably invested a little money
people are house keying like oh you're
working on this thing it sounds
interesting have you made any money and
you're like well the traffic is pretty
low so not yet it's real
great when you can say yeah people are
visiting this site I'm starting to make
a little money am i right Rick let me
know if you agree so in general you're
looking at these ranges and if you're
just starting aside you're just trying
to get traction focus on the very low
search volumes you'll be able to rank a
little faster and you may have some
other content where you're targeting
higher search volumes knowing that those
are going to be a longer-term goal it's
going to take longer to rank and that
sort of thing so when you get a quick
water break here have a quick water
break that is so now we're going to talk
about the keyword golden ratio here and
it sounds like a lot of people a lot of
people have heard of the kgr and I'll
call it the kgr keyword golden ratio
it's a concept that I developed a couple
years ago it's starting to catch on
people are actually using it finding a
lot of success it's the all in title
results divided by the local monthly
searches where the LMS is under 250 you
want to have the ratio under 0.25 or
less now there's a few you know caveats
that I can mention but the formula is
simple for a reason I could make it more
exact and more complicated it really
wouldn't get you much more valuable
information you would just have other
information in the formula there there
are different tools out there so
sometimes search volumes are reported
differently the formula takes into it
that into account so you could pick a
tool keep using the same tool that you
want and you can just assume that it's
going to work out if you follow the the
ratio it's kind of a it's a blurry area
right if it's if the LMS is like 260
it's probably okay if the ratio is like
point two seven it's probably all right
too so there's some wiggle room in there
but if you're if you're just starting to
use the formula you know like hey is
this gonna work
well you probably want to stick to the
formula exactly okay so you do need to
get the key word volumes from some tool
there's I mentioned key word keg here
which is a paid tool but there's free
tools like key words everywhere which is
part of the same ecosystem as keyword
tag you can also use ubersuggest there's
plenty of other like paid tools out
there there's like keyword finder
keyword reveal errs longtail Pro you can
use SEMRush h rafts and they're all a
little different however the formula
takes it into account so as I mentioned
just pick one stick with it and you'll
have a relative idea of the different
search volumes so I pulled the search
volumes already from the other tools so
we'll go over a couple quick examples
here so example one which electric
shaver is best for sensitive skin and
you type it in exactly like this oops
all in title and then no quotes or
anything you say which electric shaver
is best for sensitive skin and then you
get some number of results
it's kind of small here but I've typed
it in all in title which electric shaver
is best for sensitive skin and then it
shows that there are four results here
so 4/10 is 0.4 which doesn't mean are
0.25 criteria aside now would I go for
this one I probably would go for it
because 4 results is not that many and
it's 10 searches per month so 4 results
is that many I would probably write
something and try and make it better
than the results that show up and then
potentially I would rank for it just
because they're so few of them out there
alright so I'm telling you follow the
formula but on the other side you know
from a practical sense you may be able
to rank for it the other thing is this
is a very like small number of searches
so competition is going to be lower a
lot of times people are greedy and
they're going after bigger search
volumes so if you find one with 10
probably highly likely that
no one else is going for example -
that's electric shaver for a bald head
so here we have the all-in title and the
number of results is 26 when I looked up
the search volume on keyword CAG the
number of searches was 210 all right so
the kgr works out to be 0.12 and that's
under 0.25 so this is a great one to go
for when you step back and you look at
the actual results here what it tells us
is there are 26 results online in the
Google database where someone has best
electric shaver for bald head in the
title that's what this is telling us so
that means there's 26 pages where
someone intentionally put that into the
title and they're trying to rank for it
anyone else ranking for it may or may
not be targeting that specifically so if
you can deliver a better answer that's
more specific than the other results and
conserve the searcher better and that's
a good thing and there's a good change
you're gonna rank for it that's the
whole thought process behind the kgr so
210 searches per month
there's only 26 results if you write
something good if you have something
written that's really good the answer is
the query you may be able to beat him
and rank well that's the whole idea
behind the kgr now when we get into the
like lower search volumes that are like
zero listen to Google now some of the
examples here aren't perfect but for
whatever query you type in at the bottom
you're gonna have a section that is
related searches so here we see there's
several different options and keywords
everywhere it gives us the search
volumes here which is great again
these examples aren't very good
especially when worth
about buyer's keywords or product
keywords so head shave or Walmart has a
hundred and forty searches and obviously
I mean someone's looking to buy a head
shaver at Walmart that's what they're
searching for
so again poor examples here but the
keywords everywhere is a great tool
because you can look at this related
searches the other great place to look
is the auto suggests so maybe it would
be best this is a great example best
electric shaver you could type that in
and hit the space and Google will Auto
suggest all these other terms that start
with best electric shaver and you'll get
a bunch of other results for doing
research like that
uber suggests is a great tool to utilize
that so we went I did a really fast job
on the introduction part of this
presentation so we are pretty much
through the meat of it and I'm happy to
answer questions Rick mentioned that
you've made no money yet the keywords
and the were in the medium to low range
and you had nothing in the ultra low
range so that's interesting and like I
said we're ready to answer questions I
will mention not a strong pitch or
anything like that but I do have a
course called five-figure a niche site
often people ask about it
and essentially I've created a framework
a repeatable process using principles
techniques and strategies that I've been
able to implement and that other
students have too so I'm sure the people
that are watching now especially you've
seen some of the YouTube videos that
I've done and potentially you've seen
some of the five figure niche site
success stories so if you're interested
and you're on the email list you should
find out about it or you can just shoot
me an email and you know let me know if
you're interested in learning more so
now we're on to the Q&A and like I said
I think we've we've made some record
time today
questions out there right I guess I can
I'll talk a little bit about keywords
now when you're looking especially at
the keyword golden ratio it's often
really helpful to you know you'll find
your term the math works out you're
under point two five and then what you
can do what you should do is google the
term and just see what the results are
so there are some terms where the
numbers work out well but when you look
at the results there's no other
affiliate sites and the medical and
health area is a good place to find
examples of this so if you find a good
term and then you google it and then you
see a lot of very highly authoritative
authoritative sites like WebMD Mayo
Clinic New York Times LA Times you know
some other medical related sites for
example and you don't see any affiliate
sites you can make an assumption that
you're probably not gonna be able to
rank for that because Google has
determined that the people searching for
that don't want like a personal blog
they want an authority probably a doctor
to give them advice and information on
the topic again medical and health a
great example because I don't want to
you know get advice from someone who may
or may not know what they're talking
about so whenever you find these terms
and this applies for kgr terms
especially but it applies for any term
before you have the content written
before you write it yourself it's really
good if you do a quick check google it
see what's up and then go from there all
right and further as far as finding
other kgr terms a lot of times what I
like to do is go over to a tool like
some rush or H refs look up some
potentially like Rick on your site maybe
you can look to see if you're ranking
for any longtail keywords that you
didn't realize that you were ranking for
and then actually write an article on
the topic so sometimes this may happen
if I wrote an article for Best ballpoint
pen for example yet that piece of
content is ranking for best ballpoint
pen for journaling and I'm not actually
targeting that then maybe I can reframe
that post maybe you had for journaling
in the title maybe I had a little bit
more content about journaling so that
there's more relevancy you may find that
all of a sudden you know you went from
you know ranking 8 or 18 to like number
2 if you are targeting exactly what the
person searching for alright so any
other questions out there if not we can
end a little bit early today fast demo
and I'm not sure why we went through it
so fast other than I didn't do much of
an intro and we just got into the meat
of the topic today and I'll just pause
for a moment for questions it sounds
like maybe we don't have too many
questions
alright I'm probably gonna do a live
stream tomorrow morning I'm not a
hundred percent sure I usually do them
on Fridays although I'm feeling a little
bit tired this week so I may I may not I
may just publish a video in the morning
and call it a day my voice is getting a
little scratchy here so alright thanks
everyone for hopping on appreciated have
a good rest of the day and if you do
have any questions feel free to go to
the YouTube channel a lot of times if
you just put your question into one of
the comments I'll be able to get to it
and put it on
list so thanks a lot appreciate it Rick
and Andy have a good one and if we will
talk soon thanks
