all right welcome welcome
my name is Miles Beckler and this video
is going to cover some of the lessons
I've learned from podcasting from
getting my video audio files transferred
over and kind of connected to the iTunes
podcast directory that was a major
hurdle for me for some reasons I'm
recording this live so if you're
watching after the fact this is still
gonna be a lot of great information if
you're joining me or hopping on live now
welcome I'm gonna go into more about the
podcast really quick I want to take just
two quick seconds to jump over and make
sure that I can he that you can hear me
and that everything is kind of up and
running and it looks like it is so I've
got confirmation and notice this
notification squad aslam great to see
you here so right now as of right now my
podcast is live so the first thing if
you've got like an iPhone a cell phone I
would really appreciate it if you go
into whatever podcast directory that you
Beckler search for me in the podcast
directory whether it's iTunes or pod
bean or stitcher on Android and download
subscribe and leave me a review I'm
getting people popping on what's up
James we got Chris we got esalaam all
kinds of people from around the world on
already I really appreciate it so I am
starting with a call to action I will be
literally getting into the nuts and
bolts of what I learned and some of the
challenges I encountered mainly I
couldn't find anyone sharing the
information of getting rejected by
iTunes and then what to do after that
and that's what I just went through and
it took me like two months to get set up
on iTunes probably one of the important
things to talk about real quick is why
is the iTunes podcast so important and
its really the 80/20 rule in podcasting
definitely 80 plus percent of downloads
of podcasts come through the iTunes
directory so what I'm trying to do right
now since my podcast feed went live on
iTunes today
I'm trying to increase my download
liking not liking but like subscription
velocity and also the number of reviews
I'm getting out of the gates because
I've got a little window right so new
podcasts like Apple wants to show new
stuff podcast fiends who watch podcasts
all the time they're always on the
lookout for something new and if I can
get enough people like you and maybe
your friends or somebody you know who
has the iPhone if you don't have one to
go in and download subscribe and leave
me a five star review or just a review
an honest review I guess is the best
thing I could actually ask for with
integrity
I can leverage the iTunes kind of search
feature and their algorithm to display
my podcast and recommend it to people
who like digital marketing etc because
there's a lot of people who are
interested in the content we cover here
on the YouTube channel but they don't do
YouTube there they're driving or they're
walking their dog or they're doing
dishes and they listen to podcasts all
the time and that's why I've pulled out
a lot of my audio files so off the
channel I think I've got something like
a hundred and forty five audio files
that were originally videos up on the
podcast directory again it is on Android
- if you're on pod beam or stitcher or
whatever app odd cast app you use it
should show up there
and that's it so so an initial call to
action I don't do many calls to action
I'm trying to you know give a value but
in this chance you and I have an
opportunity to connect and maybe get the
content that I'm putting out in the
hands of other people who are interested
but they just aren't YouTube users like
you are so this is kind of a cool
opportunity and a way for us to maybe
get my contact content connected with
them so let's talk about the process of
podcasting a little bit so in theory
it's super simple you need to take your
mp3 files you host your mp3 files at
some sort of a podcast hosting service
and then you are able to get what's
called an RSS feed RSS stands for Really
Simple Syndication and it's a really
ugly page of text that just says epic
1 episode 2 episode 3 it's got like the
URL to the mp3 it's got the name the
title the author the description and
it's just like a little data feed it's
not something that humans enjoy or would
ever go through but we take that RSS
feed from the podcast hosting and we
upload it to all of the podcast
directories then generally there's a
period of they go in they look and they
make sure you're not just full of spam
and that you're a real person and it's a
real thing and then voila you go live
iTunes is the most difficult podcast
directory to get into and you know it
makes sense they're trying to keep their
content really high level that that is
on brand with them so it makes sense now
I had two major problems when I was
creating my when I submit my feed the
first thing is I had well the first
thing I didn't do was I didn't read
their rules so recommendation number one
is like iTunes podcast submission rules
and guidelines go read that document
because you'll probably save yourself a
total headache so one of my videos was
named why ideas are and what you
are to do about it and you're not
allowed to have swear words in the
titles and I literally took my titles
and my all my content straight out of
YouTube and plugged it into the RSS feed
so that was strike number one against me
number two I was taking the full
description out of YouTube and putting
the full description in as the
description of my podcast episode when I
did that the the podcast hosting I used
which is libsyn li b sy n they picked up
the HTML links so in youtube if you look
below some of my youtube videos
there's clickable links right I'm like
oh go to Myles Becker comm slash
millions for my free report or whatever
it is and it's a blue link or blue text
so you click it it actually takes you
there iTunes does not allow clickable
links inside of the descriptions and I
didn't even know that happened I thought
I was clean just kind of copying and
pasting but that that caused a problem
so then I go in through podcast the
Apple iTunes podcast connect it is
podcast Connect
Apple comm you have to have a an iTunes
account and then you can upload your
cast as a creator and essentially you
just give it you give them the name you
upload the image which is 3000 pixels by
3000 pixels and your your basic show
description and you click Submit and
they say great we've received it and in
two weeks within two weeks you'll hear
from us and I was just like oh man okay
cool so I submit that first time August
18th
and today I'm recording this on October
18th so what happened is it came back
rejected after two weeks and I didn't
realize at the time that was a problem
so then I had to start debugging the
process first thing I did was read their
rules and I found out I had that swear
word in place that was a problem so I
removed that and then I learned I needed
to do more of a feed validation inside
of iTunes when you put your RSS feed in
there it'll give you like a little green
bubble and it says feed validates I
thought that was enough but that's a
very superficial feed validation you
need to use a third-party tool like
validator W let me see it's w3c feed
validation it's um validator w3.org or
feed validator org and you submit your
RSS feed in there and they go in and do
kind of an in-depth analysis of your
feed that's where I found out I had
these HTML tags in there that weren't
gonna be accepted by iTunes so I go in
and literally I've got a hundred and
fifty episodes in there so this is no
small feat I go into every single
episode and I start pulling out the HTML
links and I start kind of just making
sure it's a clean feed finally get that
done and now I'm maybe a month away from
my first shot and I upload it I try to
go in and upload it again to iTunes I
upload it I wait my two weeks nothing
happens no word back from them I go in
and look at the dashboard and I just
still see my old one that's rejected
there and there's no real kind of
there's no real information beyond that
and so I don't know what to do so I try
to revalidate it again I try to submit
it again I go through the process about
two or three times in the next couple of
weeks then I reach out to some friends
of mine
they've been on this show on the on the
channel I did a podcast episode with
them they were unfreedom podcasting they
got inside of it and took a look and
they're like man everything looks great
everything looks like it's in the place
it should be and we tried to submit my
feed from their account
so because they managed accounts for a
lot of really high-end clients they have
some very very high-end podcast clients
and they submit it and it wouldn't go
through at all and it was weird because
we weren't getting a notification we
weren't getting that email that says
great we received your feed give us a
little bit of time it just nothing would
happen and then kind of randomly I go on
Twitter and I'm kind of tweeting about
it and libsyn mentions that there's
actually an email address and this was
the key and the email address is podcast
support at apple.com and the trick was
for me to literally go into the podcast
support dot or podcast support at
apple.com I emailed them and I let them
know hey I tried to submit my podcast a
while ago I know that I have these two
issues that I've since resolved I would
really like you to reconsider my podcast
as an iTunes podcast and I hope you
approve it and in the subject it was
just podcast resubmission
reconsideration request is kind of what
i put in the subject line and sure
enough i got a reply about a day after i
sent that email and they said they'll
look into it and then three or four days
later they replied and said it was gonna
be live and now at this point that was
yesterday I got that they said it could
take up to two days and it is currently
live so this really rounds out my three
pillar content marketing strategy right
there's there's a couple of goals that
I'm working at here and I wanted to make
sure and answer the question for anyone
who's searching like I can't get my
podcast feeds submitted or resubmit to
iTunes but hopefully what I just went
over will help but ultimately if you're
creating content and you're doing
organic content marketing it's really
important for you to eventually work
your way on to the three different main
pillars of content and those pillars are
how we consume content people read
content people listen to content and
then people watch content right you're
on the watching side and my DNA my my
kind of like personality type is such
that these videos are the easiest thing
for me to do so that's how I initiate it
I did videos for about a year till I
really started working on getting my
videos transcribed and on to my blog now
four months in I've got a system in
place
to get my video turned into blog content
14 months in from when I started this
channel and when I started producing
content like this
I finally got my podcast going and again
I'm just taking the the same audio file
I'm ripping off the audio file from my
videos that don't have screen shares
that don't but you're not following
along with me right like if you're doing
my screen share and you're watching
along as I'm showing you click here do
that that wouldn't make sense for a
podcast listener but just my talking
head videos my kind of where I'm
communicating ideas all of those are now
live on iTunes so if you're watching
this if you've got a smartphone a tablet
I'm also live on Android I'm on pod bean
if you go to the pod bean app if you go
to the stitcher app I'm sure there's a
few more that I'm showing up on there
but really if you're on iTunes just
search for my name in any podcast app if
you go look for one after today and
you're finding that you can't find me in
the app that you're already using please
leave me a comment on this video and let
me know what app you're using because I
can go in and sync my feed to that app
and get my stuff displaying it usually
takes like two days to two a week or two
most of them are quicker than Apple is
but really I'm trying to increase my
velocity of reviews of likes of
downloads and of subscribers to try to
get iTunes to show my podcast as like a
hot new podcast and when they start
suggesting my podcast to new people
that's a potential for me to reach
literally millions of new people because
you know there's what like 1 or 2
billion iPhones and iPad devices on in
the world so there's this whole entire
other ecosystem and that's the second
part of the the 3 pillar strategy like
obviously I'm trying to get all my my
content to link together to creat my own
create my own little kind of like web of
links of these different content pieces
that I own but I'm also trying to meet
people where they are and I know there's
a lot of people who listen to podcast
walking the dog doing the dishes when
they're washing their car when they're
commuting every day they sit on the
train a lot of people won't sit there
and watch videos it takes a little bit
more time and energy to actually sit and
engage with a video and YouTube unless
you're on read you can't really like
turn off the screen throw it your pocket
and go for a walk
so the podcast is a great way to connect
and when I'm when I'm explaining what
I'm doing I'm hoping your
following along and and internalizing
this of how can you do that also if
you're a talker if you like talking on
the phone if you like that kind of saw
maybe podcasting is your go-to and
that's where you originate it from and
then you figure out how to get it on
YouTube I think Joe Rogan which is
probably the most downloaded podcast
there is like his stuff is done live on
YouTube every day and then it goes out
through the podcast that evening or the
next morning and that is his entire
business model and he is literally
running one of the biggest podcasts out
there if you watch Gary Vaynerchuk
Gary's very bullish on listening because
people are doing other things while
listening and that's been my goal here
so I'm gonna transition I'm gonna jump
over to the quest to the kind of
comments section now and I'm gonna jump
in and answer any questions that people
might have if you have questions about
podcasting how to set up podcasting I
did a video I think it was Monday I
launched that two days ago
um that was literally I showed you the
entire process how I like stripped off
the mp3 file from a video how I put it
into all of the different processes to
make it an mp3 file that was ready for a
podcast because there are a few steps
involved so that nuts and bolts how to
is there I might show how to actually
like record a podcast straight up I
might record myself recording a podcast
it's a little meta for someone who
doesn't want to start with a YouTube
video right if you just want to start
with a podcast I might create a series
for that so if you're interested in that
let me know but that's all really uh you
know I would love a download a subscribe
and a review on whatever you use that
would help and I'm just happy to kind of
put this out there for you and now I am
going to jump over and awesome we got
people
