Starting a Podcast - #DougShow

hey what's up it's Doug Cummington here
and it's a snowy afternoon you can't see
but it's been snowing all afternoon it's
very cold outside I'm having myself a
beverage here and I was thinking I want
to share exactly why I want to start a
podcast or at least why I just can't
stop thinking about starting a podcast
I'll also go over a checklist of ideas
and all the brainstorming that I've done
to help me plan launching this podcast
and sort of how I arrived at it so
without further ado I will tell you
right now it's called the Doug show you
can get more information and subscribe
to the podcast of Doug not show that
says Doug show there's a lot of TLDs out
there and I I was like hey it's hard to
get a short one like that just three
syllables Doug show so go check it out
subscribe on your favorite player
without further ado I'm going to tell
you about why I'm gonna start a podcast
I've been into podcasts for a very long
time in fact I'm doing YouTube videos
and I have a blog because I found the
smart passive income podcast by Pat
Flynn back in 2013 but I had already
been listening to the podcast for many
years before that the reason why well
beer so I'm a home brewer and that means
I make beer at home and I got very into
it back in about 2007 and I was around
the time I guess podcasting had been out
for a couple years at that point but I
was thinking hey I want to find a
podcast on beer brewing which I found a
handful of them and from about 2007 to
about 2013 and April I listened to maybe
five or ten shows all the time I
listened to them again and again a lot
of times they were very technical about
like brewing beer sometimes it was like
more of a radio show where maybe Brewers
from around the country would call in or
come into a studio and they you know
five or six people would just chat about
beer and do an interview and it was
super long form these were like two to
three hour episodes and I loved it
well at some point you can imagine from
2007 to to
2013 I just got a little burned out on
on the topic of beer brewing and I just
was looking for something new so I found
a smart passive income by accident and I
think at that point in time maybe Pat
had I don't know 50 year maybe even a
hundred close to 100 episodes out I'm
not quite sure but I went through them
so fast within a few weeks I think I had
listened to all the available episodes
and then I was finding other people as
jumping off points so if I really
resonated with a particular interview
then I would find either that person's
blog or podcast or YouTube channel or
whatever and follow him there so for me
the reason why able to you know work for
myself is because I found podcast so
that said it's kind of a natural thing
where you want to follow in the
footsteps of the people that have
inspired you in some way almost everyone
that I followed had a blog or a podcast
or something like that which is sort of
a self-selecting process as you might
imagine because I can only learn from
people who are putting out information
and I didn't have access or didn't know
other people who were doing anything
online
aside from podcasters or bloggers or
whatever so the point is I love podcast
and I have for a long time and even on
my phone now like I'm finding new
podcasts out there and there are you
know more and more people with podcasts
and at some point I've resisted for a
long time in fact back in early 2017 I
made a decision to go the YouTube route
versus a podcast and there's spent a lot
of time creating YouTube videos started
doing a very poor job and then got
better and better the point is I've put
off this podcasting for a really long
time eventually I gave in and my wife
and I started a podcast called surviving
the nine-to-five what we talk about
corporate life and working and traveling
and stuff like that I did work well I
don't have a corporate job now I did
have one for many years and I know a lot
of stuff about about the politics and
got really deep into it for a while
before I got laid off so that is why I'm
doing it I basically love the idea of
podcast and a couple of the you know the
things on the checklist so we're gonna
go through here you know there's not a
hundred percent of a clear goal but
there
enough for me to move forward and again
I've wanted to start a podcast since I
started the niche site project blog back
in 2013 like in November so like I've
wanted to do a podcast but knew it was
too much now I'm at a point where I have
a lot of ideas I have the equipment that
I need you can see there's a microphone
behind me right there but like I have
all the things that I need and it's just
it's adding one more thing where I can
sort of repurpose content and put it in
a format where some people are gonna be
able to find it I hope right so I know
there's a lot of people who only read
blog posts and there's some people who
only watch youtube videos or vice versa
and then there's some people who maybe
they have long commute times they can't
watch YouTube at work for example and
maybe a podcast is perfect for them to
pop in during their commute so that is
what I'm doing and I just can't get it
out of my head and you know there's
another aspect which I'll come back to
at the end so let me get to the
checklist portion here so I googled a
couple like checklist for launching a
podcast and I had a reasonable idea of
what to do just in general but I'll kind
of go through it and then I'll tell you
sort of my answers for each one of the
sections so you need to define your
audience your goal you need to come up
with a title cover art understand your
recording setup get the equipment if you
need it of course understand how you're
going to edit you need to have an
understanding of your schedule as well
and it's a really good idea to have a
lot of buffer so that you're not trying
to publish something at the last minute
you have to take care of the website for
the the site you know you should
probably have a home even if you're not
gonna put much on the website you should
have one you have to take care of
podcast hosting where the actual audio
files are located also from a production
standpoint you need to understand the
show structure the different types of
shows that you may have and think about
the content that you're gonna have on
the show so for the audience portion one
thing I have built in already is a blog
audience and a YouTube audience like you
thank you for watching by the way if
you're not subscribed please do
subscribe to the channel but basically
I have a built-in audience and I have an
understanding of who's in the audience
and what they're interested in now one
aspect of the show is I want to cover
more things I want to be more broad on
the podcast than I am on YouTube for
example or on the blog even so I do take
some liberties on the YouTube side but
it is very clear what people are
interested in and I could publish other
things on YouTube and I probably will
however when I like I said when I
publish something that is very
interesting to the audience I could see
the metrics and audio analytics very
positive if I publish something a little
more obscure maybe the audience doesn't
care about as much you know I could
appreciate that and the the thing with
YouTube is so algorithmically driven
that I found that I was on a treadmill
producing content of a lot of derivative
information over and over again and it
was it's like a never-ending cycle which
is okay I mean I do live streams often
and I try and help beginners but at some
point it becomes less exciting for me
now I know it's important to do for a
community building and for helping
people out but at the same time I want
to do some other things that said
another limitation on YouTube is the
length of the content so sort of the
sweet spot for YouTube videos is between
like 6 and 15 minutes or so give or take
if it's longer than that some people are
just not going to watch it and if it's
too short there's only so much
information you can provide and people
don't watch even if they watch a hundred
percent of a three-minute video it's
only three minutes long so there's some
issues with you know producing content
now I can't just put out exactly what I
want to do and maybe I will do a little
bit more of that but I do understand the
limitations from an algorithmic
standpoint on the YouTube side okay so
that was a long answer for the audience
the audience that I'm looking for is
affiliate marketers people that have
nine-to-five jobs and they're looking to
do a side hustle or maybe even quit
their job sometime in the future or just
a way to make money on the side digital
nomads or also you know a big part of
the audience and I have a lot
friends who are digital nomads as well
the goal of the podcast is to overall
strengthen like the brand of niche site
project and Doug Huntington myself I
also want to be able to tell more
long-form stories and to have guests on
where there's a little bit more back and
forth actually just the other day my
wife and I were listening to a interview
that I did and it was very much just
one-sided not conversational it was just
a Q&A the interview was fine but it was
not as interesting as it could have been
so the title we already talked about its
the Doug show located at Doug show so I
wanted to have that very simple and
straightforward and easy to get to
versus you know go to niche site
project.com slash podcast slash episode
four it's just Doug show and it's
there's a lot of TLDs out there like I
said so you know go shop around you
could find some interesting stuff out
there cover art very straightforward
because I have done YouTube thumbnails
for pretty long time I had some images
that I can use and I know how to use
canvas so I just kept it very simple
very clean and straightforward so when
you do head over to Doug - oh you'll be
able to see just crisp and clean and
maybe I'll actually get a professional
photo taken at some point but at this
point that is fine the recording setup
I'm good to go
I had you know good microphones already
for just recording YouTube videos and it
recently got like a better microphone
arm there so I have a little scissor arm
so it'll swing around and move a little
bit I also picked up a used zoom h4n
recorder I got it for about a hundred
bucks and I can hook in two XLR
microphones to the bottom and I didn't
have to get this recorder but I was
finding it sort of cumbersome to record
on my laptop here and then try and
record in my office versus setting up in
the living room where it's a little more
casual it'll be easier for me to
interview people that are local here
additionally just if my wife and I are
sitting around chatting we'll be able to
record a little more easily there also
sometime
maybe I just want to go to the office
bring my microphone bring my h4n and I
can record a couple episodes at the
office instead of you know bringing the
laptop and a few other things I could
just bring this and a microphone and a
little stand and I'll be good to go for
editing I have Maxo GarageBand is on
there I'm sure there are a few other
apps that you can use for editing but
GarageBand I already know how to use
additionally I probably don't want to do
all of the editing so once I get a
template set I will have my VA help out
you can also use GarageBand she's
comfortable using on the Apple products
for you know movie editing and audio
editing and all that stuff so that's
pretty straightforward so next we have
the podcast hosting this is where the
audio files are stored and downloaded
and all that stuff so they store the
files there for me first survive the 9
to 5 my wife and I were using blueberry
which is fine they put out a plugin
called power press and it's been ok when
I looked at the pricing and I started to
look at some other companies I realized
that maybe I want to go to a different
company so there's one called castis
calm or Casto so I guess and they seem
to have a slightly cheaper unlimited
plan where blueberry you had to monitor
you were limited by the size of the
files and then at some point I was like
that well this is kind of a pain to
adjust the file sizes and we were
probably saving at a higher sampling
rate than we needed to that sort of
thing the point is it looks like I'll
probably use cash dos for the Doug show
because it's a little bit cheaper if
you're going to publish a few episodes a
month further they have an automation so
it'll automatically publish to YouTube
which for me sure I could do this
manually but it will actually save time
in the long run if every episode that I
do it just goes automatically to YouTube
and I don't have to mess around with it
in fact it'll take the show notes for
whatever podcast it is and then it'll
make it the description for the YouTube
video so it's pretty seamless and I
thought
that was a good deal just overall the
pricing seems good and it's unlimited so
I don't have to watch the file sizes or
anything so next is actually the content
and the types of shows that I may
publish so luckily because I've put out
content in different formats over time I
have a lot of options so number one I
really want to try and do about 50%
interviews and one reason for that is
it's a little bit easier than just
talking so doing these sort of
monologues or it's a little more
difficult and it's difficult to be
interesting thanks by the way if you're
staying with me this far it's difficult
to be interesting and it takes a certain
amount of planning ahead of time
otherwise you end up rambling on and on
so interviews are great the other part
with interviews is I'll be able to share
more information stuff that I don't know
and other people are telling me so
that's great further the benefit for me
is a lot of people may be searching for
interviews with specific people or they
may be able to just share their audience
with me to have you know for example if
I interviewed someone from Empire
flippers right they may say hey we did
an interview with Doug over here check
out his podcast something like that
which would be fantastic
so interviews I'm hoping about 50% we
will see how it goes
a couple other show types that I may do
room technical topics so you talked
about just WordPress a site speed themes
technical SEO topics that sort of thing
now that can get a little dry but a lot
of people are very interested in those
kind of topics and stories so I want to
be able to tell just some more broad
stories a lot of people have actually
emailed me and asked about moving from
Georgia to Montana some other people
have asked about going from a corporate
job to a side hustle to a full-time job
after being laid off some of these
stories are things that I've shared in
bits and pieces here and there a lot of
times on a live stream but for me to be
able to like tell the story in a longer
form being comfortable that someone is
you know maybe they have 30 or 40
minutes during their commute to listen
is fantastic versus you know throw
something on YouTube and people may
watch like five minutes
you know 30 or 40 minutes and that is a
wasted effort in a lot of ways now I
know I know there's a lot of people that
do watch a full video and those are the
important people at the same time I do I
have that many long-form videos so I'll
say that I've done super long videos and
as I've shortened them up I do
understand that people enjoy those a
little bit more and couple other things
I know that Q&A is huge so I do these
live streams on Fridays and I've done
probably close to 100 I need to count to
find out how many live streams and q and
A's I've done but basically I know
people love to ask questions and get
answers especially in some you know
real-time further I get questions all
the time the email and through my
question submission form to just answer
questions or common questions over and
over again so I know though there will
probably be a show type of just here
we're gonna answer four questions in
this episode we'll answer five in this
episode something like that but further
what I'll do is let's say I interview
Dom wells from human proof designs and
we talk about content and publishing
content I will then at the end of the
episode most likely have a couple q and
A's so just put at the end that are
related to the topic and luckily I have
hundreds or thousands of questions in a
file that I could just go find and
answer those questions I could filter on
certain things and put those in the
appropriate episode and finally the
schedule how often will I post most of
the podcast that I listen to publish
once a week or maybe like three times a
month something like that a couple of
the podcasts that I listen to publish
like four six times a week and my
understanding especially after
publishing a lot of YouTube videos and
trying to listen to podcasts where they
publish some you know long-form every
single day for example I know for me
it's a little too much so I think now
this is subject to change but I think
I'm going to publish two episodes per
week
around one hour apiece now that will be
a lot of work for me but one awesome
thing is I do have a lot of content
ideas already and in fact I already have
a lot of audio content of interviews and
things that I've done in the past that
I'll be able to repurpose and utilize
for the podcast so for example I've done
a lot of success story interviews on the
YouTube channel I can take the audio
from that and doctor it up a bit make it
fit for a podcast and then put the intro
and outro discussion whatever I need to
do and that is a podcast episode right
there so that said I'll be able to have
a pretty good buffer I have a lot of
content that I can repurpose further I
also have a lot of blog content that I
can basically reuse the ideas updated as
appropriate but reuse the ideas from a
blog post and put it into a podcast
which it's essentially what I've done
for YouTube in many many ways so there's
there's a good relationship between all
the content areas and if I'm smart about
the way I'm creating it I can repurpose
it so for example I can record some of
the live streams that I do which there
on YouTube automatically but I can take
the audio from like the content portion
of it let's say I have a 15 or 20 minute
discussion or the specific topic that I
do as a live stream well then I could
take that middle portion and then use
that for the content of a podcast so
they are repurposing there's still more
work to be done but it's a smart way to
repurpose the available content right
there so please head over to Doug show
subscribe via your favorite podcast app
and there's a trailer out there and
hopefully depending on when you watch it
there may be other episodes you can
start downloading like I said I'm
planning on two per week and I hope to
do a decent number of interviews thanks
a lot for watching if you're new to the
channel have a look around some of the
videos and if you like what you see
please subscribe thanks
