Taking Breaks -- Live w/Doug of Niche Site Project

hey what's up it's Doug Huntington here
from the chai project and we were just
getting rolling I'm a few minutes late
compared to last week or maybe early
from a few minutes by a few minutes or
years and the weeks before but I'm here
now so welcome I'm going to talk about
taking breaks so fun topic breaks around
you know like your daily work day and
then from another standpoint which is up
you know what I'm going through right
now where I just finished a fairly like
intense sprint of work and I'm going to
be sort of taking a break on a smaller
scale at least for a few days which I'll
describe more I do see some people are
hopping on which is awesome thanks for
joining up and I see tejana is on
excellent thank you and like I saw your
chat on Facebook come over just a minute
ago but I was doing something else so
I'll reply back later
but anyway today yeah we'll talk about
taking breaks on a like small micro
scale like each day and then we'll talk
about in a greater sense to like take
breaks go on vacation and stuff like
that and if you are just joining up
thank you let me know where you're from
and just say hello so it's good I think
we worked out the tech issues fingers
crossed
something seems to creep out like every
couple weeks or something but in general
things have been pretty smooth for a
couple weeks so that's good
all right so a little update if people
were on for the the Friday session just
digress before we talk about taking
breaks but the the Friday session I had
a special guest I had a friend in town
TJ and you know we had a really good
time we drank we actually drank a little
too much beer on most of the days he was
here he's the one that got me into home
brewing about 10 years
ago so the the beer and I guess the
alcohol connection goes back quite a
ways and yeah we had a really good time
but on Friday the session was about like
me realizing that I reached my email
inbox quota for one of my like primary
email addresses that I use for an
insight project and it filled up on
Tuesday of last week so from like
Tuesday afternoon until like Friday
morning I received no emails I thought
it was just doing a good job with my
emails and stuff but really I was
receiving zero emails eventually I
figured it out
and these something was fishy like on
Thursday maybe even Wednesday but it
wasn't widespread enough across like
messages I was expecting to get for me
to actually do anything luckily I
figured it out I thought I wasn't gonna
get any of the messages like my server
doesn't save any of the messages and
just reject them once you hit your quota
by the way all I had to do is just
increase the quota like a madman all I
had to do is turn it up to like five
gigs instead of one and anyway I got all
the emails like I think all the email
servers that were trying to send a
message to me I got all the emails
within like an hour or so which is you
know it was a little overwhelming cuz I
would answer like four emails and get
six back just from like six more would
come in so I it took a little while to
catch up but I finished it up and it was
all good okay
I see we have a few people on so I'm
gonna go ahead and get into it and let's
see Ont on dimensions that this session
was good on Friday to have you know a
different person in here to it is
actually very helpful to have a
different person instead of me doing a
monologue so even if it's you know just
TJ saying hello but maybe I'll try and
mix that up and schedule some things
Sergi what's up good to join
and I see you from Israel thanks for
letting me know and Sergey also mentions
that taking a break once in a while is
good otherwise she'll get burned out
just so true and let's see D card is on
welcome and Richard says oh man how late
to the party of mine you are not late at
all I just got started maybe a few
minutes ago and I'm just burning time
right now so I think we'll get into it
though so we don't go too long
hey Mel what's up it looks like we have
more folks coming in feel free to you
know ask questions in the chat I'll
scroll back in a minute
so today I'm talking about taking breaks
and for me right now you know I
mentioned that I just did like a pretty
intense sprint of work over the last
like six to eight weeks or so part of it
was working on just content for an inter
site project part of it was like
preparing for the course launch which
happened last week and another portion
of that was like updating the course so
a lot of things are sort of like
timeless the concepts are going to apply
on an ongoing basis however one thing
that I didn't realize is you know some
of the tools that I mentioned within the
course was change a little more often so
sometimes I don't like tools anymore so
I take him out and I add something else
so I rishaad a decent amount of the
videos for the course
so I actually had to spend time editing
those videos after we shooting her
uploading like making sure all that's in
place so I just finished a whole lot of
work and I have the tendency like a lot
of people to just like try and stay busy
which is kind of you know it's fine to
do for periods of time but everyone's
everyone needs rest like Sergey was
saying so like right now what I'm doing
I'm probably going to be working in the
mornings primarily flight for the next
week or two
and like try to take the afternoons off
I'm sure some things will come up that
I'll need to take care of but I'm gonna
try to isolate all the work to before
new now I do wake up early sometimes so
even if I isolate all the work until
before noon I still may get you know six
hours of work and or something like that
even taking breaks but the point is I'm
I'm like building it into my schedule
I'm blocking it off I'm planning on like
you know getting on the house some going
on some more hikes spending some time at
the gym I'm probably like catch up on
reading so it wasn't reading as much as
I had been earlier in the year just
because I was busy like implementing
stuff and doing work so I'm probably
gonna go back read some books that I had
on my list that I just haven't had the
time to get to so on this bigger scale
I'm taking a break just to like give
myself a bit of a rest and you know
hopefully that'll give my brain space to
think bandwidth to think about like
applying like new new things that I've
learned maybe you know reading these
books I'll get some new ideas stuff like
that so on a like more micro scale this
is a harder one too and I think again
I'm guilty of this where I don't take
enough like small breaks through the day
and like I have a tendency to sit down
and it you know perhaps it takes me
about 20 or 30 foot say I'm writing
let's say I'm writing a blog post or a
section of the course where I'm gonna be
writing like thousands of words probably
in the city like it may take me 20 or 30
minutes to like get in the right frame
of mind to even like start hitting my
stride and producing the content and
like efficient way so it takes me a
little while to get in the mind frame
and then I'll have a tendency to just
sit and work for like three four hours
maybe even longer and I'll just get out
- you know grab some water get more
coffee or something like that but at
that point like I'll hit a burnout
period like pretty quick and a lot of
times it leads to towards the later part
of those sessions I've got you know more
frustrated and it's just not going as
well and you know it depends on what
you're trying to accomplish sometimes
that period like if I'm for example like
this week I'm only working until noon
I'm probably gonna be like I can push it
hard during that period but if you're
looking at like you know a 10 hour day
an 8 10 12 hour day if you work like
those big stretches and don't take
enough breaks like I usually got really
stressed out and I got very sort of
frustrated with work that I was like
engaged with and I would also get
frustrated with you know coworkers I
don't do that now but at the time and
that's a lot of the corporate projects
that I was on sort of like higher stress
you're dealing with clients you're
dealing with your teammates and you have
to work these you know pretty long hours
8 to 12 hour days especially like when
you're on the road that is a whole other
level of you know you're staying in a
hotel you have you you know have like
the comforts of your home and you are
eating out all the time there's just a
lot of other stress areas so the point
is in those situations not only did I
not take enough breaks but like I was
being stressed in a lot of different
areas so it's probably one of the
reasons why I didn't work out that well
with like the traveling consulting
lifestyle did you usually do like four
months comfortable comfortably and then
like I would hit it you know a six-month
period and then I would start like
getting very they're just frustrated and
stressed out with work I guess is the
easiest way to explain it so the point
is I'm sure if I would have taken like a
5 to 10-minute break each saying like
hour or 90 minutes throughout those days
I probably would have been in much
better shape towards the end now for me
I run
you can say I have a half-marathon shirt
on so for me and like running this is
the same way you know TJ runs as well
he's gonna do a half marathon in a few
weeks coming up but basically it's like
the pacing early in the race like really
determines for me anyway really
determines like how I feel at the end of
the race and how fast I could run at the
end of the race so it's almost
counterintuitive but there's a school of
thought where basically you run your
race can you you take walk breaks right
I do this I think every race that I've
ever been in I would always take walk
breaks and basically I run for say eight
minutes or so and then I'll walk for 20
seconds for 45 seconds and then start
running again and even though you're not
tired it's super important to take the
breaks in the beginning take a break
after your you know your first eight
minutes and then take that walking
period and I know some people are like
oh you're not really you know really
running the half marathons if you're
taking breaks and you shouldn't take
breaks and for some people that's even
the thrush threshold in like a
successful run or race they're like well
I want to be able to run a half marathon
but I don't want to take any breaks me
like or I just take breaks the whole
time I mean it's no big deal to me and
because you're taking breaks early I'm
able to finish stronger and have they
call them negative splits so if your
first mile is like a 10-minute mile your
last smile you may improve along the way
so your last smile may be like in an
eight minute and thirty second mile so
you you're going faster as you're going
along and you're able to finish stronger
and you know the problem is if you start
fast then it's hard to regulate how much
like fuel you'll have or how good you're
feeling at the end so anyway I think it
kind of relates to like working as well
so if you sort of moderate how much
you're working you can really get a
benefit out of it
there's a I don't do this strictly or
actually even on the frequent basis but
there's the Pomodoro Technique which is
basically you I think you worked for
like 22 or 23 minutes and then you take
like a seven minute or eight minute
break and you do that throughout your
day so you're doing you're like time
blocked so you have a deadline you're
racing towards that deadline and then
you're also taking frequent breaks
throughout the day some people swear by
it because it forces them to be very
like focused on tasks for those work
periods and then there of course a lot
of breaks so they can rest for a minute
you know I don't I think you had the
opportunity to like you know sort of
just be distracted you can go on
Facebook or do whatever during that
period or I mean it's probably more
effective especially for a person like
me to you know work on the Pomodoro for
the 22 or 23 minutes and then just maybe
you said quietly let me take some notes
maybe get up and go for a walk you know
that's actually one of the big things
that I do in fact like in the mornings
I'll still you know go for a walk before
I start working and I tried it even if
it's something like for 10 minutes if I
can get up and take a break from the 10
minutes and walk around that's really as
good or better than you know going and
wasting time on Facebook or something
like that okay so I talked a lot there
and to hop over to the chat and Gianna
mentions that it's a great plan you've
been focusing on taking breaks lately as
well it really helps the creativity the
efficiency improves as well so that's
good to know
and then tejana also mentions what
really helps especially if you're at the
computer all day is to get sunlight so
at least one hour of it the stronger the
better
summers perfect for the fresh air yeah I
think that's you know that's a big thing
especially like I'm gonna like a
northern
latitude so basically like right now in
the summertime like the days are super
long but in the winter it gets like much
shorter so actually I don't get like the
season seasonal depression at all but I
know some people do it's really
important for them don't get the light
or I have like these hundred watt like
fluorescent lights on them but I have
this light here there's actually like
the daylight color so I hear if you just
shine these bright lights even at your
desk you can help temper some of that
but yeah some lights really good Thank
You tejana for mentioning that
and is on welcome nick has a
question here let's see yeah so Nick has
a question here when key words but I'll
answer it here so if a key word is G to
pen reviews can you make your title G to
pen review or would you use reviews even
though it's really not proper English I
usually always go in favor of like what
reads best so I mean at the end of the
day you're trying to deliver something
to visitor to your site so you should do
that I don't really don't really
recommend you're using a keyword just
because it says there's a keyword if
it's like weird if it sounds funny if
you read the title and it doesn't make
sense don't use it use the the time of
them makes sense
additionally like plural versus singular
like Google basically treats those the
same so Nick says you have an outdoor
dartboard that you go play that that is
a good break you can throw something
it's pretty fun
and then tejana mentions moderation and
consistency or best
it's not always easy especially if
you're in the zone forget yeah and I
guess that's a good thing to know
like when I ain't when I do get in to
the right mind frame I'm like working is
something really well I
usually we'll just push through and then
maybe like once I had a natural stopping
point I can stop I actually made test
that out especially this week where I'm
gonna you know stop working at noon
especially this week so potentially I
could even if I'm in the zone go ahead
and take that break and just you know go
for the walk right and see where that
leave something you see if I can
maintain the focus especially if I don't
like add new inputs and I've just hit
pause and go walk outside and don't try
to distract myself I think it may
actually work out to just like give my
brain a rest and then you know go for
that short walk so okay cool any other
questions out there before we finish up
here okay cool and I think not sure
which day this week but I may I have
some some light changes for like what's
coming up on the YouTube channel so keep
doing these live streams I kind of like
them anyway and the thing that I'm going
to do is there was someone that
recommended just making shorter videos
they said they liked my content but the
videos are so long and he was right I
don't I mean the videos some of them are
just they're very long like I don't
usually watch videos that long and
through some research I now know that
some based on real data the optimal
length of a YouTube video is somewhere
between like six-and-a-half and like 16
minutes roughly and then tejana and I
have been working together a little bit
and she recommended much shorter videos
like tighter content which is now that I
step back I see that's pretty an obvious
thing so I'm gonna be working on that
and I'm probably thought about like we
editing some existing material but I
think
may actually be faster for me just to
like shoot new material with the thought
in mind that it actually needs to be in
the seven-day minute range so I'm gonna
be working on that and see how it goes
and I think some people like long-form
some people like short form and still
have enough short form content
especially serving the same information
so okay cool I see Steven asks about
Pomodoro timer I haven't done that
strictly especially for a long term
basis I do occasionally like set a timer
but it's not for a Pomodoro idea yeah
going out and walks tejana is one of the
best places that I get ideas but I only
started getting them once I stopped
listening to podcasts so I used to
listen to podcast almost constantly and
I wasn't getting very many good ideas
and I think it was roughly like the end
of last year when I stopped listening to
podcasts so much and now maybe just like
one day a week I'll listen for you know
an hour or two if I just if I feel like
it or if I see something really
interesting let's all have a listen but
in general I don't listen to podcast now
ideas are much better now Charlie Parker
says to ask the keyword question you can
I will probably hold the question and
put it into a queue where all you know
basically cover it later but aliens are
you real fast since you were kind enough
to come and join me live today so you
found a lot of kgr terms in your niche a
few of them are about the same thing
like just different ways to say the same
thing so basically you're asking what to
do so if it's if it's really the same
content just pick one and publish that
if it's slightly different content you
can publish like different posts but if
it's really this like the same way to
ask the same you know question or if the
content really is going to be like 90%
the same
just pick the best one and publish that
one and then find others as you said you
found a lot of them so yeah just publish
one and Nick says you'd be happy to cut
up some of the live videos for me hey
that'd be cool yeah if you wanted if you
want to try one or two of your favorites
and like see how they cut that'd be
really interesting you can shoot me an
email about that as well so any other
questions I see we have we're up to 14
viewers which is yeah it's a decent
crowd let's see okay well if there's no
other questions and I'll just pause for
like 15 or 20 seconds just to make sure
those come through there's no other
questions we'll finish it up for today
and basically I'm not sure what time
over the next couple of days but it may
be around this 11 o'clock time frame and
I'm gonna I may schedule it I know I
could actually schedule these events in
YouTube and sometimes I get around to it
but most of the times I do not so
alright in the che what's up how's it
going I'm about to bail here Lachey
but thanks for joining you could rewind
the video and watch it from the
beginning
so alright cool I'm gonna head out and
we'll catch you tomorrow thanks everyone
for joining and have a great day
