The War of Art - in progress book review

hey what's up it's Doug Pennington here
this is the second of two live streams
that I'm doing today and hopefully this
baby's gonna work here and hopefully
people will be hopping on and I'll see
that you know people are attending stuff
hopefully you could hear me I'm on my
phone right now instead of my laptop so
I can't monitor as well but it does look
like there's at least one person on and
if that kind person can let me know can
you hear me I hope you can or if you
can't hear me you wouldn't understand
what I'm saying and you'd say something
like hey I can't hear you so I'm gonna
assume that it's working Nick what's up
thanks I thought it may be you so I'm
gonna this is like an in-progress book
review so maybe not as valuable but the
this is the war of art and Nick have you
read this by the way have you read this
book the war of heart it's by Steven
Pressfield and the the like the subtitle
is break through the blocks and when
you're inner creative battles so it's
kind of it's one of those sort of
inspiring books versus like an
actionable book okay I think in the next
five minutes I'll be able to summarize
the whole book for you and it'll save
you a lot of time and about $8 so I've
heard of this book for four years
actually since I got started online I
heard about this book the war of art I
heard of reference by many many people
and it was written
mm - and so it's it's been around and
when I heard about it it was like ten
years later so it had been out for a
while but it's very popular and it's
it's a quick read so if you have it at
the library like maybe check it out I
mean you could really finish it and
probably you know couple hours or so
and one of the reasons why is the
spacing sort of thing and each one of
the chapters is sort of short so some of
them are just a couple paragraphs and
the whole idea behind the book is the
resistance and the resistance is like an
internal thing that you know each of us
have and it can apply you know not just
to are they talked about you know like
pure sort of artists that are doing like
painting or sculpture then they talk
about writers Steven Pressfield is a
writer he wrote like a dozen or so
fiction books and then a couple
non-fiction books and it's really about
like all the hurdles and you know
resistance that we put up ourselves that
prevent us from doing the work he also
applies it to anyone doing something
creative so entrepreneurship which is
you know how I ended up hearing about
the entrepreneurs reference it and I was
reading a lot and watching on a youtube
videos of Seth Godin and he references
the book the world aren't quite a bit so
after I read a few of Seth's books I was
like okay I'll move on to stuff the
Huber Frances which is a you know common
thing that people do so this book is
similar to like Seth Seth Godin books in
that they're very like sort of
conspiring and they kind of they give
you a like a bit of a kick
pants and I think I must have I just
read that it's one of the one of the
people that I guess sort of like the
testimonials they put on the back so it
kind of makes you aware of the fact that
there is resistance and like for me
personally all like cleaning up around
the house a clean you know I remember
friends in college and people that I
talk to now they're like in college
before I had like a final or something
that I had to do they would like clean
their dorm room yeah like the worst time
the only time they needed to be doing
something else and they were actually
like wasting time cleaning the room and
that's kind of like what the resistance
does it manifests in different ways for
different people but essentially it gets
in the way from doing the work and when
it comes down to it this whole book just
sort of describes a bunch of different
ways that we can get in our own ways and
what when you really distill it down
it's really just what you have to sit
down and like do the work and even if
you don't feel like you're you know
writing good content like you still need
to sit down and like do this stuff
you're supposed to do sit down in you
know write for three hours a day or one
hour or however what you're intending on
doing and it may be mostly garbage but
the days were the inspiration strikes
like you were in the place you were
supposed to be doing the work that is
pretty much what this whole book is
about and I you know I think I mean I I
literally I bought it because I heard it
recommended so many times I think I even
bought like there's a follow-up book
called do the work I believe something
like that and I think I bought that too
I believe there were only eight dollars
I'm trying to you know give myself some
more budget for books and not feel bad
about buying books but this one for sure
I'm a little
pointed in just because it's so like in
actionable and so repetitive dad's like
I get the point like I've read the back
cover and that that pretty much covers
it so and for me like at least right now
in my life
today I'm like I know like I show up and
I do the work even though I don't have a
boss I sit down and like do the stuff
that I'm supposed to do
earliest I'm like you know my ass is in
the seat I'm doing something so it may
not be exactly the right thing but I'm
in the place where I'm supposed to be
most of the time especially when you
have like a a looming deadline in front
of you like that's a pretty good
motivator so I usually have some sort of
deadline that I set up for myself even
if it's arbitrary like even if as long
as I said something I could aim towards
it so anyway I see a few more people are
on has anyone read the war of art it's
on and and Nick said he did not so
anyway I think I may do a few more like
reviews like this hopefully of you know
books that have actually finished and
read it implemented something from but
you know it does bring me to like a
thought that I've had like in the last
you know a few weeks I've read a few of
Seth Godin books and they're very good
they're quite inspiring but again a lot
of ways they're it's highly in
actionable so like if you're if you're
looking to get like your pepped up you
need like a pep talk
someone to sort of steer you in the
right direction I think these kind of
books again Seth Godin books which range
various topics can really give you like
good examples of stuff but when it comes
down to like doing things you'll sit
down and then realize how much you don't
know which is valuable right there's hot
there's a lot of value in like
understanding that like you now need to
go find more information so that's
something and it's interesting but at
the same time like a lot of times it
doesn't you don't require you know 200
pages to get to that point so it can be
said faster it does make them like
faster reads and one thing that I
noticed in Seth Godin books which like I
think everyone like but he gives them
that it like very interesting case
studies and examples but every time he
gives mine I think I feel I feel like
they're very much like outliers like
almost all of the examples are outliers
they're not like regular people
they're just exceptions so it's still
you know it's still valuable right like
there's a lot of exceptions out there
but when it comes into it I'm just like
alright like you're you're putting like
Tim Ferriss examples in the early Tim
Ferriss is pretty accomplished like of
course you did the work you did all the
stuff they're talking about but what I
see those in there I'm just like man
it's a little bit of a disconnect so ok
so Nick says garyvee has a good mix of
heavy motivational with bits of
practical advice Nick you're like
reading my mind so I have a couple like
short like super short blog post like
drafted one is like my thoughts on Seth
Godin which is basically what I just
said and then Gary Vee is another one
actually really didn't enjoy Gary Vee
for a long time because I would just see
motivational videos on Facebook that
people share and it was like some dude
yelling at other people that they need
to work harder me personally I was like
wow company like I just want to have
like some flexibility in my day and like
I've done hard work before and I can
still do it and I really want to choose
what it is but I don't want to like to
work that hard but I get his
motivational stuff that now I really
like I like him a lot
but it took a while it took like years
for me to turn the corner on that
because he just seemed like an angry
dude yelling at people to work harder
and I was like everybody wants to work
that hard but I like him a lot now not
that anyone cares what I think of Gary
Vee or Seth Godin receivin Pressfield
but okay Shawn says you're currently
reading trust me applying confessions of
a media manipulator and that's really
cool I haven't it's by Bryan Holaday
people don't know but I like Bryan
Holaday a lot and I think he has like a
book that came out like two day or yes
it must have been yesterday but it seems
really interesting yeah right holidays
good I haven't read I'm trying to think
I maybe haven't read any of his books
all the way through but I'm really
familiar with the stuff out there so
this one I should probably check out
thanks for mentioning it cool any other
questions out there or what's what's
going on what are you guys reading
drinking um this is actually a beer that
I brewed it's like a it's an amber which
it looks always super darkness
lighting here but yeah actually sort of
amber but yeah pretty multi and not too
hoppy or anything so okay so I'll just
round it out just in case there's no
other questions or anything so the war
of art it's okay
I wouldn't like highly recommended to
like general people but if it's someone
who's like an artist particularly oh
right there's a lot of rioting examples
in here but if you're in like a in a rut
and you're you're not making progress
this book is probably like really useful
but if you're highly motivated and you
don't seem to have an issue with you
know showing up and trying to do some
work then this book is probably like a
huge waste of time it's really you know
it's really it's I don't know it's more
of like to be redundant since I said it
before it's a little bit of like just an
inspirational book versus anything else
and it would only inspire you if you
need to be inspired to like sit down and
work through like a writer's block or
something it's it's very I don't know
it's very it's very light on unreal
stuff so in Nick you mentioned something
here okay so Nick actually this could be
a whole topic for something for some I
guess a blog post or a video so Nick
says to be honest I read mostly blogs
I haven't read an actual book in a while
so that was me about a year and a half
two years ago so a while back I like I
read maybe like one or two books a year
that was probably like three to four
years ago and then I slowly started
reading a bit more maybe like ten bucks
the next year and then I think last year
I probably read like 25 this year I
think you know we're a little more than
halfway through I've read probably about
30 or so and like honestly there was
this trilogy that I read by Justin
Justin chronic anyway I read these like
super long books otherwise I probably
would have read like 50 books at this
point but the thing that I noticed with
blogs versus books is just the quality
like with a printed book like they edit
it like people look over it and it's
like much higher quality usually not
always but usually it's a little more
there's like more longevity in it
comment saying blogs don't have that
there's some pint vlogs where you know
they work on content for a long time
they but when I went from you're not
reading so many blogs to reading books I
was like there's such a huge difference
in quality and like the information in
it that I hardly read blogs anymore and
when I you know I was trying to improve
my writing so I started like looking
closer at some of the blog's that I was
reading in critiquing it and hi I don't
think I'm very good at grammar but I was
like looking at how poorly structured
like the whole blog post was so I have a
blog of beating up blogs but the point
is I think that if depending on what
you're trying to find out right
sometimes there's like not a there's not
a reason to read the books and it's more
relevant to read a blog so I totally get
that and I do read some blogs
that nearly as many as I was but anyway
the whole point is like super high
quality like writing and editing and you
just get a higher quality product so me
if I'm trying to link write better I'm
gonna need to read higher quality stuff
and like just be exposed to it more and
so I'm reading like a ton now and I'd
never really enjoyed it before other
than like reading beer books so okay
then Nick says there's also subtle
meditation is there also a subtle
meditation effect as well reading a book
over a blog yeah for sure
and mainly for me it's only like fiction
books or something written like
historical books written in like a
fiction format so like Erik Larsen has a
few books that are like that you know he
covered the 1893 Chicago World's Fair
like pre World War two like Nazi Germany
the Galveston Hurricane and anyway so
books that read like fiction were great
and I try to read those like before bed
and it kind of like takes me into it
helps me fall asleep basically where if
I read like a business book before I was
trying to go to bed I'd like think about
it too hard and then I'd think about
work and then that would you know
stressed me out a little bit so okay I
need to start getting dinner ready
my wife's playing tennis she'll be back
soon so I need to get that going and
thanks for joining up I know this was
like off schedule we'll see like if
people over and I check out the video if
it hits this sort of the same number of
views as normal but it could be
interesting to do you know some of these
sessions a little different
from the deaths I was actually gonna go
outside today but I mentioned earlier
that it's hot out there it's like 90
degrees and super sunny and if I want to
stay inside and drink a beer
so all right cheers everyone
we'll see you tomorrow have a good night
