- Hey, it's Pat here.
And I wanna challenge you.
But before that, I need to write something down.
Alright, let's get this up here.
Man, I wish there was a better solution
for one of these things.
Alright, so to set this up, I need to,
I wanna tell you about ladders real quick.
Now hear me out, you probably heard of the phrase
climbing the corporate ladder, right?
But I think life is like climbing just a giant ladder
and you choose a ladder to climb
and the higher up you go on that ladder,
the further down you go down that path,
the more committed you are to it, right?
'Cause the higher you climb, the scarier it gets.
You know, you don't wanna let go.
You're gripping tightly
and the higher up you go on that ladder,
the harder it is to move from one ladder to the next, right?
Like if you're just starting out with something,
you're not very high off the ground
so you could climb back down and start on another path.
But the more committed you are to a path,
the harder it is to move on to the other one,
so imagine your life, you're climbing this ladder
and you wanna move on to another ladder.
You've discovered that maybe you climbed the wrong ladder
or that ladder is sort of falling
so you wanna grab on to another one.
But you realize that in order to climb that other ladder
that's next you, you have to fully let go
of the ladder that you are on.
And I've experienced this before when I got laid on in 2008.
I was climbing the corporate ladder,
I was becoming an architect,
and I was doing really well there and I got let go,
I got laid off, which was very difficult, right?
Now what was really cool about getting laid off
was it opened up my eyes to a lot of cool opportunities
like potentially be my own boss
and starting my own thing, which I did.
But every time I was trying to think
of going full-on with that new venture
and becoming my own boss,
something was holding me back and it was architecture,
it was the life that I was prescribed growing up.
Like I have to go to school and get good grades
and go to college and then have
this amazing job that was secure.
Like my head was always wanting to go back to that.
I had to, in order to grow as an entrepreneur,
let go of who I was.
I had to let go of five years of school,
the fact that my parents paid my way through college,
which I'm super thankful for obviously.
I had to let go of the progression in architecture
and the career that I had started
in order to grow into this new path
and it wasn't until I fully let go of who I was
that I finally started to see
some real results happen in this new venture of mine.
And the crazy thing about this
is even after starting my own business
and starting many more businesses and doing fairly well,
I've had to continue to learn how to let go of new things
in order to grow into new areas of life.
And I'm still struggling with this
and I know this is something we all struggle with
and so, I wanna challenge you,
and I'm gonna be the first participant
and I hope you'll follow too.
This is gonna be very simple to do,
hard to maybe think about, but here it is.
I want you to take a sheet of paper
and write down the following words.
I will let go of, whatever it is,
the one thing that you know you need to let go of
in order to grow to wherever you wanna go.
And then use the hashtag #letgochallenge,
that's how I'll track the entries
because I'm gonna select 10 random people in a week,
on July 18th, actually July 18th I'm gonna select 10 winners
to win a free hardcover version of my book Let Go,
which is right now available on Kickstarter.
Huge thank you to those of you
who have backed campaign already.
If you happen to be a winner
and you've already backed campaign,
we'll just subtract the price of the book there
but you can check out the link to the Kickstarter below
but this isn't about this.
This is about you and the one thing
that you need to let go of too.
And so I wanna see it, I'll be tracking
on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
I'm gonna be selecting 10 random winners
across all those three platforms.
So again, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram,
just use the hashtag #letgochallenge
and show me and your friends and family
the one thing that you're gonna let go of
to help you grow to where you wanna go
and if you wanna include a little explanation
on what this challenge is about
and why you need to let go of that thing,
I think that can be very helpful
for not just people who are following you and myself,
but also for you too.
So very simple exercise, hard to think about
because this is a commitment that you're gonna make
to let go of the thing and whatever the thing is
that you know is holding you back from where you wanna go.
Because as my good friend Ramit Sethi told me once,
"What got you here won't get you there."
You always have to continue to let go of things to grow,
even after you become successful.
And so, I will let go of, for me, perfectionism.
This is the one thing I'm struggling with right now
that I need to let go of in order to grow,
to do a lot of the big, amazing things I wanna do
in the world of business, in the world of education,
for my kids, I need to let go of perfectionism.
So use the hashtag #letgochallenge
on Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter.
Just one entry per person.
I will follow along, I'm tracking the hashtags.
By the end of July 18th, I'm gonna announce 10 winners
for the hardcover version of my book Let Go
which is available right now as well on Kickstarter
and I'll leave links below in the description
or in a comment and just wanna thank you so much
for those of you who have already backed campaign.
But one more time, write it down.
Sheet of paper, doesn't have to be pretty.
I just wanna see it 'cause I know that you know,
you need to let go of something in order to grow too.
So thank you so much, I appreciate you.
Looking forward to seeing you participate in this challenge
before the end of next week, July 18th, 2018.
Looking forward to it.
