What Entrepreneurs Need To Learn About Setbacks & Success From Professional Athletes!

hey miles here miles Becker calm this
video is all about setbacks and recovery
specifically you're going to learn what
the pros know about recovery that the
rookies don't because honestly setbacks
happen to everyone now we're gonna talk
about this from the entrepreneurial
standpoint right as a digital marketer
in a digital entrepreneur but we're
gonna use it an analogy of sports
because it's so so so relevant to you as
a digital entrepreneur so first and
foremost setbacks happen that is the
truth of the game that we play I've
documented some of my setbacks some are
self induced I crashed my website just
before launch man more times than I'd
like to count to be perfectly honest
just two weeks ago on Sunday night an
update on a plug-in on our website wiped
out all of the mp3 links on our
deliverables for our membership program
there's 360 pages with audio kind of
embedded into it so all of that there
are monthly customers were purchasing
disappeared because of an update
randomly found out about it at 7 p.m. on
Sunday night these types of setbacks
happen in the tech world which is what
I've explained there but it also happens
in your personal life right we have
personal things that come up from time
to time and all go as far as saying that
some of these things happen in our
spiritual life and when I say that I
mean you know sometimes we are kind of
self sabotaging ourselves in a way and
creating setbacks that weren't there
before but it's it's kind of a process
of the the kind of mental patterns
playing out now that's the world that we
live in there's there's no avoiding
setbacks and in fact when we look at
setbacks as an opportunity for growth
and as an opportunity to take our skills
and to take our kind of know our domain
knowledge to that next level
they can actually looked at as a very
positive thing so here's the difference
right I'm gonna break down the actual
difference between the pros how pros
deal with setbacks and how rookies deal
with setbacks is pros always always
always focus on being able to and
recovering as soon as humanly possible
the setbacks to a pro might set them
back a few minutes or maybe an afternoon
or maybe an hour or two possibly a day
or two to a rookie sometimes these same
types of setbacks can set them back for
weeks or even months now when I first
started making money online I was
essentially direct linking people from
MySpace over to an affiliate program
it really was the wrong way to build a
business and that came crashing down
around me because the terms of service
change on their end this absolutely
crushed me and when I say it crushed me
I went from generating three four five
thousand dollars per month I had
expanded my lifestyle to actually move
near the beach in Santa Monica right I
was paying more for rent than I had ever
paid in my life and I actually needed
that money I'm and I had a day job right
so I let my lifestyle cost more so when
that money disappeared it hit me on
absolutely every level of my being yes
it hit me my pocketbook it made me think
Oh F what am I going to do now I started
drinking a lot more as a way to
self-medicate and as well a way to kind
of numb the pain of the realization of
what had actually happened there it
literally took me from that point when
that when that popped out from under me
it was about 2004 maybe early 2005
somewhere kind of between where that
those years kind of connect between
November and February I would say in
those years and that's where it all went
down from me it literally took me I
tried some other things I literally
jumped to network marketing and MLM
scams from there I went on to try real
estate investing it literally took me
about four years to get fully back on
the horse in the internet marketing game
that had proven so successful for me
before because on many levels I just
couldn't face the facts I couldn't face
the reality starting over from Ground
Zero was just too much for me to bear at
that point in time today when or two
weeks ago when I had that little
situation happen and my entire website
went kind of 180 out and all my
deliverables on my paid membership area
just flat out disappeared from an update
minutes within minutes I had my plan of
attack I knew exactly what to do I went
in I fixed it one time I created a
template video on how to fix that I got
it over into the hands of our virtual
assistants and by the time I woke up the
next morning it was up and running and
that's the difference right now I'm a
pro now I get it I I know that these
kinds of setbacks are coming and I've
built teams I've built people I built
processes and I've built a mindset that
is literally unshakable of this is what
I'm doing I've got people who depend on
me and I'm going to make this happen
no matter what so let's look at the
sports analogy for a minute you know for
sports there's there's a couple of ways
you can look at this
kind of recovery idea number one let's
start with like a mixed martial artist
an MMA fighter so it's a very brutal
physical experience I could only imagine
I have actually no honest opinion or
idea of how brutal it might be but um
just as a outsider looking in the
experience of being in the ring and
going through a fight multi round fight
with another competitor who is as
trained or better trained than you are
and just going blow-for-blow and
literally some of the the takedown the
grappling the arm bars the the kinds of
stresses that it puts on the human body
through either impact or stressing
through arm bars and those kinds of
takedown things that's incredible right
so how long does it take that fighter to
recover from the fight so they can get
back to training full-on like hardcore
training so they can get back to that
next fight the fighters who are able to
recover more quickly and get back to
training to get ready for that next
fight those are some of the most
successful fighters in the world then
you can go even kind of zoom in more on
their actual training routines right so
when they're actually training and
they're they're lifting weights we're
fatiguing our muscles when we lift
weights in order to kind of stress them
so they grow back stronger how long does
it take for that individual to recover
and in sports medicine there is a lot of
focus on the recovery phase people
actually go out of their way to
implement and integrate recovery into
their workouts and recovery into what
they do because they know that the
faster they recover the faster they can
get going again but I don't really think
that that internet marketing is is that
closely aligned to the mixed martial
arts worlds we're not necessarily in the
ring duking it out here but what I think
a sport that is much more similar to
kind of the affiliate marketing internet
marketing the digital entrepreneurship
game would be golf and it's guys say
choose golf because it's really that
golfer versus themselves in that moment
right they train they practice their
coach they know exactly what to do
they've spent years and decades really
fine-tuning the the hundred thousand
micro movements that go into a beautiful
golf swing and in that moment the
pressure is on and they have to deliver
and when they hit a bad shot
when they when they school a chip or
when they come off the tee into the
rough or when something goes wrong how
quick can that golfer mentally regain
their composure and get right back to it
right so
recovery phase sometimes is a mental
thing and I believe there was there was
a championship hole at some point with
Tiger Woods when he was in his backswing
and someone took a picture and he heard
the shutter snap in the audience and he
stopped himself mid-swing and gave kind
of a glare to that individual and went
back to what he was doing and absolutely
crushed it off the tee for him to be
able to regain his composure to be able
to be in that moment ready to make that
swing to be stopped by an outside
influence to take a brief second to
regain his composure to go right back to
what he's doing and then to strike the
ball properly to get that thing straight
down the fairway that is exactly what a
pro must do now let's look at something
that have an entire woods life several
years ago when he had the the affairs
came out the scandals and all that went
around in his world right this is
getting more into the spiritual world
side of things that every human being
has to recover from at points and times
you were able to see if you're a
follower of golf you could see his game
spiraling because of all of that drama
going on in his actual real-world life
then you take into account the back
surgeries that he's had and the actual
physical things that have happened that
have taken him time to recover but you
know what Tiger Woods is a beast of a
professional and he's coming back with a
vengeance right now in 2019
may very well be one of the greatest
hero to zero to hero stories ever based
on his ability to recover from all of
this different stuff right physical the
moments in the game his spiritual world
his love life his world around him all
of that and his ability to come back and
recover is what is making him absolutely
one of the greatest there ever has been
to play at that game so you need to
think and I'd love for you to think
about how are you recovering from these
things that happen are you able because
we all know we gotta like when you fall
off the horse you gotta dust yourself
back off and get right back on that
horse how long does it take you to get
back on that horse if you started a 90
day challenge and you fall short and day
32 you stop for some reason how many
days does it take for you to make that
first video on your next 90 day
challenge are you up at it that next day
or do you sit and dwell with it do you
think about does it run through your
head
do you mood alter are you drinking wine
and beer and then all sudden you're
hungover and now you have to recover
from that hangover a period of feeling
like because you just consumed
toxins that
before and that's now what you're
dealing with instead of being
clear-headed and making that video and
then does that cycle perpetuate for you
now everyone has to think about this in
their own way but the truth of the
matter is that professionals people who
are at the top of their game whether
it's a sporting event whether it's on
the sports level or whether it's here in
the world of internet marketer all of
your competitors are focusing on how
fast do I recover from these challenges
that arrive because the challenge has
happened to everyone sometimes it's a
third party tech issue something happens
how quick are we able to dive into that
problem and really find the solution and
implement and get that thing done
sometimes we do all of the work
ourselves that's where I was for like
eight years I did absolutely everything
and I had zero training about digital
marketing I had zero training about
computer science and and web development
none of it I had to go learn as I was
doing but how fast are we able to get
back on that kind of back on the
proverbial horse to make progress
forward again
and if you're finding that when you hit
a challenge when you hit a wall it takes
you a week or two weeks or three weeks
to go that's a very very big sign that
you're way off from where you ultimately
want to be so you need to find a way to
get leverage on yourself to recover more
quickly to start putting back out that
content way way way more quickly if you
balk at your 90-day challenge and it
falls apart around you great start your
next one tomorrow if you launch a
product that gets absolutely no response
in the market that means you have a
message market match maybe you didn't
ask them what they wanted before you
created the thing great start tomorrow
with a new approach right learn from
what happened learn from that experience
and then set a new approach and get
right back on that horse a little side
note about when all of our mp3 files
kind of disappeared
they were running through a kind of a
third-party plugin they were all
embedded through this plugin and when
that plugin reset it eliminated them
from being displayed within the post
itself so what did I do when I reworked
the system we hard-coded all of those
mp3 files directly into the post itself
now I'm not reliant on a third party
platform or a third party piece of the
puzzle to display those member
deliverables I've bypassed that on my
website and now it's actually natively
embedded in so now my website is even
stronger
it was before so not only did we recover
but we actually made it stronger and
this kind of a problem will not affect
us in the future now we're free to have
that mental capacity to move forward to
work on what's that next great thing I
can create for my audience came up with
this video for you today so really pay
attention to your recovery phase a few
other things I do to recover every
single day I'm out in nature weather
permitting we got snow on the way and
I'm actually excited to lace up my boots
and go for a walk in the snow but like
every day I'm out taking at least 2030
minutes in nature I prefer to get about
an hour hour and a half walking around
whether it's through my local park here
or whether I Drive down to a trailhead
to get a real kind of deep nature
experience I meditate every single day
that's one of the big things that I do
I've been doing that for 10 years
straight middle of the day in the
afternoon I take some time to lay down I
listen to a guided audio meditation if
you don't know of a meditation you'd
like to try a guided automatic
meditation just search YouTube for
guided audio meditation find someone's
voice that sounds good and just kind of
practice the habit of listening to that
I eat extremely clean food I think it's
um you know what we consume and I listen
to lots of great audio as well so what
we consume both what we listen to and
what we read and what we actually eat
has a big big big kind of play on how
well we recover and where our mindset
state is if you're binge watching horror
shows on Netflix versus listening to an
empowering audiobook about like let's
say this is marketing by Seth Godin or
big magic by Elizabeth Gilbert those are
two very different things that you're
consuming and what its gonna do to your
kind of biomechanics and what its gonna
do to your mindset are very very
different so what are you consuming
mentally what are you consuming what are
you eating
are you drinking what are you drinking
are you drinking a lot of water are you
staying hydrated do you wake up feeling
absolutely great in the mornings excited
to take on in your day or does it take
hours for you to feel good because of
what you consumed the night before pay
attention to these little things right
it's the big things and it's the little
things and professionals are hyper hyper
hyper focused on all of them we're
looking at the big things we're looking
at the little things and we're always
optimizing all of them and not your
competition that's where they are so you
need to at least be aware and if this
just brings a little ounce of awareness
to you from this video great that's the
starting point maybe start a journal
journaling about this keeping a journal
to keep yourself honest to where you can
just write and free right and let what's
going on in your head let it out onto
paper see what comes up I think
ultimately the faster that you can get
back on your horse back to your strategy
working a new tactic working a new
approach to to achieve your goal to
achieve your strategy that is ultimately
the recipe for success it takes about a
thousand iterations right it's not
10,000 hours none of that BS it's about
a thousand iterations you can have to
try a thousand different things whether
it's three or four hundred blog posts in
a couple of hundred videos and ten
different opt-ins and a bunch of
hundreds and hundreds of different
emails at some point through a thousand
different iterations you're going to
find something that works and then you
just keep doing what works over and over
and over again and you'll get
compounding results from those efforts
but if you try three things and then it
takes you a month until you get back on
the horse and you try three things and
it takes you another month to get back
on the horse because all these
challenges that you're hitting up
against which is natural in the game of
growing a business online are literally
stopping you for a month at a time then
how long is it gonna take you to try a
thousand iterations if you're doing
three per month what if you're doing
five per month right it's 200 months if
you're doing five per month
you're never gonna actually get there
but if you're able to iterate and try
several things each and every day you're
able to kind of condense that iteration
time period down within about three to
five years you should really be seeing
all of those pieces of the puzzle start
to connect together as long as you're
recovering quickly you're moving forward
through the challenges you're you're
open to the challenges when they show up
you take them head-on you get right back
on the horse when challenges hit when
you get knocked off whether it's
something in your real world something
in the tech world something at the
mind-body-spirit level you're right back
on that horse staying committed to being
the most valuable person in your
audience's world to that one person
who's gonna help them solve their
problems that really truly is the key
that's what motivates me to make these
