in this video I'm gonna be explaining
the difference between a wordpress.com
website and a wordpress.org website I'm
also going to be showing you how you can
set up your very own self-hosted
wordpress.org website towards the end of
this video so let's get started
hello always hallux here from WP eagle I
hope you're all well now before I start
if you're not already subscribed then
simply click the red button below the
one that says subscribe on it and then
click the bell and you'll be notified
when I upload new videos it tends to be
every single week I'd absolutely love to
have you as a subscriber
so why not do it now but anyway a
question that I get all the time is
what's the difference between
wordpress.com and wordpress.org I also
see people signing up for the wrong one
all the time too they hear about you
know wordpress and wordpress websites
are really cool and a good thing to have
and they think hey i'd like myself for
wordpress.com they sign up for one of
the plans maybe the free plan or the one
above that and they get this site set up
and then they find that they can't do
everything that they need to do because
generally people on the internet talking
about wordpress.org you know in
tutorials that kind of stuff and that is
different to wordpress.com so let me
just explain the differences right now
so let's start with wordpress.com
wordpress.com is run by the guys at
automatic who basically build wordpress
and make WordPress and what they've done
is they've made it simple they've taken
one person they've simplified it and
they've put it in a nice package so that
people can just you know sign up and get
a wordpress site without had to worry
too much about anything technical now
this is great if you want a really
simple WordPress website that's kind of
you know restricted in it in quite a few
ways it makes it really easy and if you
just want to you know have a blog and
add some content then wordpress.com
might be for you the problems arise when
you want to do a little bit more than
that maybe you want to add some plugins
or use your own theme then you can have
a few issues because the basic plans on
wordpress.com don't allow you to do that
now I see that recently they've added a
business plan I think they call it which
allows you to install plug-ins and
themes and things like that which is
great however the cost for that plan is
I think twenty dollars or twenty pounds
a month which is quite expensive when
you compare it to what you can do on a
self-hosted WordPress site using word
or so let's talk about wordpress.org now
this is the version of WordPress that
most of us are familiar with it's
available over at wordpress.org you can
download it and you can install it on
your own servers or computers or
whatever now I know that sounds
complicated
however it's not actually that
complicated because most hosting
companies that you take out hosting with
for example Hostgator they make it
really easy to install WordPress so you
don't actually have to worry about
downloading and uploading and installing
and all that kind of stuff you can
literally just click a button and have a
wordpress or website up and running in
no time at all benefits of using the
version of WordPress that comes from
wordpress.org is that it's the
full-blown version and you can easily
install plug-ins you can install themes
you can customize it to your heart's
content and you're not going to be
restricted in any way so generally if
you're looking to do pretty much
anything more than just a very very
simple blog then wordpress.org is gonna
be the version for you so what I'll do
now is I'm going to jump on the computer
and I'll show you exactly how you can
set up your very own self-hosted
wordpress.org website I'll take you
through setting up the hosting sorting
out a domain name and getting WordPress
installed so then you're ready to add
your content add your team add your
plugins whatever you're looking to do so
let's get on computer and do that right
now the first thing you're gonna need is
any domain name no domain name is a
dot-com doctor at UK dot net org dot
whatever you know there's a lot of
domain names available nowadays now
personally I like to keep all my domain
names in one place and that place is
GoDaddy it's coming up and using for a
long time they are great for domain
names we're not going to be using them
for our hosting our hosting is where the
website lives I'm going to be using a
different company for that but for
domain names GoDaddy is definitely the
one now if you've already got a domain
name registered maybe with a different
provider that's fine I'm gonna be
showing you how you can use that the
main name in a few moments and in fact
if you want to just skip this domain bit
then I'll put a time on the screen now
and you jump forward to that and we'll
be getting on with the hosting
anyway domain name come over to GoDaddy
I'll put a link in the description
please be aware that any links that I
may share with you they could be
affiliate links which will mean I'll get
a small Commission if you use them so
thank you very much
but keep in mind that I only recommend
services that I use myself and I think
you're good so yeah Go Daddy
you get this big box just simply type in
the domain name you want now I'm just
gonna get a kind of demo sort of
training name for this and light
actually setting up a real site so
something like where WP org demo then
I'm gonna click search and it's gonna
let me know if that domain is available
which it is yes my domain is available
to buy if whatever you were searching
for is not available you gonna have to
try either a different extension so dot
org net dot info or whatever or you know
try different variations on the words
that you entered so it's added it to my
cart if it hasn't done that for you then
click the Add to Cart button and it's
just 99 pence for the first year so not
a huge expense so continue to cart now
it's added some privacy which I would
recommend it is optional but I would
recommend it because it basically hides
your personal details you don't have
this your personal details will be
available on the internet which could
mean that you get spammed and all that
kind of stuff which is a bit annoying so
$4.99 a year you can eliminate that I
tend to go for this on on all the
domains that I own you don't need
anything I don't need is managed
WordPress or this email address thing we
can do all that with our hosting which
we're setting up in a moment or to just
continue these options okay I'm now in
the checkout now I'm already sign up
with GoDaddy and logged in so if you're
not then there may be a bit now that you
need to fill in it ought to register and
that's all fine I'm gonna go through
this checkout now and make the payment
so I've registered the domain I finished
to check out all that kind of stuff and
now on I was at WP demo com I see the
GoDaddy screen which means it's all
registered and all working and and ready
to go it didn't take as long as I
thought and it took about 20 minutes
some like that for it to come live
so just be patient and when you get this
screen that means you're ready to go so
the next thing we need to do is just set
up our hosting and install WordPress
which won't take too long
but let's do that now okay so I'm over
at hostgator.com you'll find a link in
the description or just simply head over
to hostgator.com as I said earlier any
links that you find in the description
they may be affiliate links I will and a
commission if you use them but I do only
recommend products or services that I
use myself and I think are good like
Hostgator so what we need is some
website hosting the reason why I go for
Hostgator is because they are extremely
good value for money some of the lowest
prices you'll find online for hosting
but even though they are very cheap the
service they provide is good you get
nice fast hosting you get good support
and you get all the features that you
need
they also guarantee uptime of over 99%
so your websites unlikely to go down so
let's click on web hosting you'll see
that there is WordPress hosting too but
we don't actually need that the web
hosting is fine we can do WordPress
stuff with that and it's cheaper so when
we come through to the web hosting page
we can then choose the package now if
you just going to set up the one web
site with a single domain then the
hatchling is fine it starts at 275 a
month which if you compare that to
wordpress.com which we were talking
about earlier if you go for their
business plan that's 20 20 pounds a
month so that could be like $25 a month
something like that so this is way
cheaper if you're thinking of setting up
more than one website and you want to
have you know unlimited drains then the
baby or the business plan might be
better for you with the business plan
you get a free SSL and stuff too but
generally the hatchling is gonna be fine
and of course you can upgrade your plan
at any time if you need to so click sign
up now
and we now have the order form now we're
not gonna be registering a domain with
Hostgator because as I mentioned I think
it's better to use a domain registrar to
keep all your domains in one place
so I recommended GoDaddy as you saw
earlier so if you have got the main name
go back to GoDaddy and register one
there if you've already got a domain
name with someone else
that's five two I'm going to show you
how to adjust that in a few moments so
what we need is the I already own this
domain tabs are giving that click and
then just simply type in the domain name
that you want to use probably the one
you just registered with GoDaddy all the
one that you've already got over with
your domain registrar so WP dot org demo
com was the main name I just registered
over at GoDaddy then what its gonna do
is just add it there and it's also gonna
recommend some other names if I want
them which I don't so I'm not gonna tick
any of those boxes just leave that top
one as it is and scroll down and now we
get to choose our hosting plan and the
package type has already been selected
that's what we just did a moment ago but
if you want to change it you can
next is the billing cycle and hosting is
much better value if you go for a longer
period so the one month is 1095 a month
though I do have a discount batch which
I'm going to share with you in a few
moments which will get you a better
price than that however the price is
basically virtually half or at least
there's thirty three point five two
percent off and kind of half nearly if
you go for 12 months 24 months is even
better the thirty-six months is even
better than that so I would recommend
going for one of these in terms of
billing cycle go for twelve months and
then you get a much better price so I'm
gonna select the twelve months you then
need to enter a username so just type in
something that you're gonna remember
that you're gonna use to log in to
Hostgator enter a security pin you're
gonna need that when you contact the
customer support if you need to contact
customer support I'm not going to fill
in the whole form right now that's a bit
boring but I'll take you through it the
next thing is your billing info so usual
stuff email name address all that kind
of information on the right-hand side
you can enter your credit card or you
can pay with paypal let's scroll down
again section four is additional
services and you don't need any of this
so just aren't tick all that stuff if
it's ticked
Section five very important is the
coupon code I said I've got a voucher
that I can give you our coupon code I
can give you so let's type that in now
it is Eagle free zero and this should
give you a better at discount therm
whatever has been offered already so at
the moment I've got this kind of 36 and
before I validate the code I validate
the code I've now got a discount of 42
so a much better discount if you do go
for that one month plan you'll get your
first month for just a penny
using this code it is an affiliate
coupon so I will get paid the Commission
if you use it but it gives you a great
discount and it's a great way of saying
thank you to me for making these videos
but of course it's entirely up to you
whether you use it or not
so yeah the code is eagle free zero and
then click validate and then we're about
done just gonna tick the terms or
conditions whatever terms are service
and the case I should pull up seen all
that stuff and then click checkout now
so I will get my hosting all set up I'll
just fill in this checkout with all my
payment details all that kind of stuff
then all we need to do is repoint
our domains so that it's pointing at
this new hosting and then we'll install
WordPress so let's do that now so I
agree to checkout place my order all
that kind of stuff put my credit card in
and I've just received this email from
Hostgator hopefully you've received the
same sort of thing too and this contains
all the information I need in order to
access my new hosting account so once
you've got this email keep it safe you
probably gonna need it going forward so
the next step before is the WordPress
there's one more little thing we need to
do and that is just repoint domain name
at our new hosting so I'm gonna head
over to GoDaddy to do that you'll need
to head over to whoever you've got your
domain name with godaddy that's fine you
need to follow me if it was someone else
then the principal is basically saying
you're gonna want to log in to your
domain provider find the devayne that
you want to use and then update the name
servers and there should be some option
around that you know in the DNS section
or the name service section so let's go
over to GoDaddy and do that now
I'm gonna go in I'm already logged in
I'm gonna go to manage domains I'm gonna
find the domain I need I can just search
for it so it's WP oh there it is a
little demo calm the one I just
registered and then gonna click on these
three little dots and go to manage DNS
as I said it should be pretty similar
with whoever you're using looking for
those DNS settings here we've got some
records we don't need em what we do need
is the name servers which we can find
here and I'm just going to change these
to the Hostgator name servers so does
that I click change going to select
custom and then we got two boxes to put
them in if we go back to that email the
name servers are in there so we can just
copy into our clipboard and then paste
in like that and the second one is right
there let's copy that paste it in click
Save okay that's all done now that's
gonna take a little while to update
could take 20 minutes could take an hour
could take even longer so I'm just gonna
wait for that to update you know that
it's working when you visit your domain
name in your browser and you see a
Hostgator page that means it's all
working so yeah I'm just gonna give it a
few moments for it to do that and then
then the very last step is to log in and
it still WordPress so that only took
about a minute
it didn't tell you some of their thought
and now when I go over to WP org demo
comm which is the domain name I just
registered as you know I see this
Hostgator page so that means we're up
and running we're pointing to the
Hostgator hosting all we got to do now
is install WordPress so let's do that
I'm gonna go back to that email that I
got with all my account info and what we
need to do is go to the control panel
this link here I'll give that a click
then I need to enter my username and
password which again are in the email so
let's paste in that username which is
the one I entered when I signed up for
the hosting and then go
and set the password copy that paste it
in and then click login browsers asking
me if want to save I can do we don't
need this banner okay so this is our
Hostgator control panel you can do all
sorts of things in here like setup your
email and you know basically just manage
everything to do with your site all we
need to get WordPress up running is this
link here which just build a new
WordPress site it's gonna give that
click then we've got a very simple
wizard set up kind of thing that we need
to go through it's very straightforward
first thing we're going to do is choose
a domain name it's the only one there's
quite easy
leave the directory blank and then just
click Next you then need to give your
website a name it says blog title but
obviously WordPress is way more than a
blog it's a fully functioning website so
I'm just gonna call this my WP dot org
demo you need to create an admin user so
this is the username that you're gonna
be using to log into WordPress which is
different to logging into your Hostgator
control panel your WordPress login is
what you use to add all your content and
set up your site and all that kind of
stuff so I'm just gonna go my name don't
ve go first name WP last name eagle then
I need to enter a email address so eagle
at WP eagle com it's fine you then want
to make sure this is ticked the
automatically create a new database and
then you also want to tick the terms of
service agreement and then click
installer it will take just a few
moments to install WordPress for you
installation is complete so this
information here is what we're gonna use
to log in to our WordPress website so
it's very important that you make a note
of this password I'm just going to copy
it into my clipboard I also show you how
you can quickly change that once you
logged into something a little bit more
memorable so let's click login now this
is our WordPress login screen so if at
any point you need to access this to
really log into WordPress simply go to
your domain name slash
WP - admin so the username was when I
just entered which WP Eagle on the
password is what I've got my clipboard
so I'm just gonna place that in click
login and here we go within WordPress
you can save that into your browser if
you like he's a wordpress dashboard
ready to go ready to add our content and
set it up and all that kind of stuff and
by the way be sure to check out the rest
of the videos have got on my channel
they're all around WordPress and how to
do stuff so pretty fun those quite
useful but before we just take a look at
the front of the site I'm gonna just
change my password to do that I can come
up here and go to edit my profile scroll
down click generate password ok then
type in 1 and I'm hopefully gonna
remember it's gonna click hide so you
guys can't see it it thinks it's weak so
I'm gonna have to click confirm YouTube
weak password and then click update
profile so that's my password change to
something that I can actually remember
so to finish off let's have a quick look
at the site showing this if this comes
up it's probably just to browse a cache
thing just refresh here we go it's a
WordPress website running the default
theme all up and running on our own
hosting it's the wordpress.org version
so it means we can do whatever we like
with it and and that's it for this video
so that brings at the end of this video
I hope that's clarified any confusion
you may have had around wordpress.com or
wordpress.org and you've been able to
follow that little tutorial and get
yourself a nice WordPress website up and
running if you've got any questions or
comments then please leave them below I
