affiliate marketing we talk about
getting traffic to your websites we talk
about Google Analytics we talk about all
sorts of things and we talk about
dropshipping marketing yet loads of
stuff but tonight there's a background

pretty much that's the baby probably can
hear that anyway so the topic of tonight
stream is gdpr which was a question that
was sent over to me by one of my viewers
I'll give you a shower although I don't
think you you're actually on the site so
I think it was Carl that wasn't it was

hey Glenn Miller sent over a question
regarding GD P R so let me just explain
what GD P R is there's some new
regulations coming in within Europe
sorry the dog was just opening my door
never mind
yeah there's some new regulations coming
in in Europe which are all around data
protection that kind of thing yeah I see
on the chat don't worry about the baby
my wife is in tonight so hopefully she's
she's gonna deal with that
not like that stream I did was the
Christmas one with the baby that was a
nightmare wasn't it anyway I digress G
PPR is all around data protection and
it's all around the way that you handle
people's data the EU and European
general do like to bring in lots of laws
when it comes to the internet they
brought in a cookie consent one recently
not that recently pretty over a year ago
now where you had to accept cookies and
that kind of thing
this gdpr is all about those protections
that say so it's it's how you handle
people's data and basically the gist of
it is that you have to you know be very
ethical with people's data you have to
be out to yes make it very clear to
people and you know when they opt in to
you have to make it very easy for them
to be able to opt out of your lists you
also have to make it very easy so that
people can have a look at the data that
you you hold about them so they should
be able to just quickly log in and
better check you know what information
you've got on them all those other bits
and bobs to get that kind of
go with it and it's a bit of a headache
for for companies and people in the EU
and it will also apply to you even if
you're not kind of operating out of
Europe if you're targeting anyone in
Europe then it still applies so
companies like Facebook and Google need
to take this very seriously and in fact
it's it's so sort of companies that it's
pretty one of the reasons why they this
legislations come in because they have
so much data and they're not always that
good with it as we've recently seen with
a kind of big Facebook scandal okay so
question your policy and you need to be
very clear the cookies that you're gonna
be using if you're running the Facebook
picks all you need to make sure that
that's in your privacy policy and then
refer people over to Facebook's
policies on that so they can look into
it but generally let me just bring up
I've got a a checklist of GDP our stuff
I've also got an article here which I'll
share with you in a second so preparing
for the GTR so this is 12 steps from the
ICO which is the information
Commission's officer office whatever
they called here in the UK and they've
come up with this 12 steps so basically
the 12 steps are I'm gonna go through
this pretty quick because gdpr is a
particularly subject even if I do say so
myself but it's something that I know a
lot of people are worried about it
because the fines can be like millions
if you get it wrong not that that's
probably gonna happen but you never know
so you need to be aware of gdpr which I
think we are cuz you're talking about it
you need to think about the information
that you're holding from customers and
and who you share it with Facebook and
Cambridge analytical all that stuff you
need to have a very good privacy notice
and you just basically need to be very
clear every step along the way what
you're gonna be doing with people's data
and what they should expect from you in
terms of you know if they give you an
email address what are you gonna be
sending them and how often you're gonna
be sending it and all that kind of stuff
you need to think about people's rights
and I kind of just been over them the
rights that people have are that they
can view the data that you hold about
them and that they can delete that data
if they need to they can basically
remove themselves from your company or
your database or whatever the next place
subject access requests so you should
update procedures and plan how you
handle requests so that's basically
following on from point four how are you
gonna deal with it when someone does get
in touch for you and say can you delete
my stuff
how's that gonna work kind of thing you
need to have a good reason to be
processing personal data basically if
you're marketing I think that's a good
reason a good little reason you need to
have consent this is step 7 so it's a
little bit more than just the tick boxes
it's being very clear what people are
going to be getting and you can't have
that tick box automatically filled they
have to tick you that kind of stuff
there's a thing around children's so
generally I don't store any data about
children or market to children because I
just think that's a little bit of a gray
area number nine you need to make sure
that you're nice and secure so that you
can't get hacks and someone come Nick
all the data that you've got number ten
is data protection by design and data
protection impact assessments which
sounds like a workplace you have to
familiarize yourself with the
information commissioned officers code
of practice on privacy of privacy and
number eleven is you should have a Data
Protection Officer so basically someone
needs to take this on as part of their
job and if it's just a small business
like you and me that means it's as
number twelve
if your organization operates which is
number two is International if your
organization operates in more than one
human state ie you take data across
borders you should determine who's in
charge which country you're kind of
basing out basically which pretty
doesn't apply to too many of you so
that's basically it so how does it
affect people like you and me well the
first thing is we need to be very clear
when we're taking people's data and so
making so if you're gonna send them a
news later every week you need to make
that very clear on the opt-in box
in terms of the software that we use I
mean I use MailChimp as you guys already
know I recommend my trip a lot these
companies are kind of taking care of the
GDP our stuff for you so they should all
be compliant in terms of their security
in terms of allowing people to delete
their records in terms of allowing
people to look at the data you have so
if you use a system like MailChimp or
any other kind of reputable CRM system
or email system you should be fine so
anyway let's have some questions
okay Rose says I don't have any list and
have no wish to get people the infos so
no headache for me that's fine and that
means you know nothing to worry about
however you probably are missing a trick
there and leaving money on the table by
not having a list now you know they
always say that the money is in the list
as it were so building a list is
definitely a good thing to do and
something that you should probably be
doing it's like we've covered before and
preview streams that you know offering
something for free to build lists is a
great way of doing it and because it
allows you to stay in touch with people
and prospects and people that are
interested in what your site does but
just being a plain affiliate and sending
people straight off to Amazon or
whichever merchants you're promoting you
know once they're gone they're gone
there's no way that you can you can
contact them again there's no way that
you can market anything to them again so
if you're paying for that traffic it's
quite hard to get any value out of it
whereas if you can collect an email
address and then you know communicate
with them over time you get a lot more
value out of them

let me just clarify so for affiliate
websites where you're collecting
people's information maybe using
MailChimp you know some sort of pop-up
that kind of thing the main thing you
want to two main things you want to be
aware of and want to implement first is
when you collecting email addresses you
just need to be very clear what you'll
be sending and how often you'll be
sending it and that kind of stuff where
you'll find out if you do a google
you'll find the exact kind of words you
want but just basically saying that if
you put your email address in here I
will send you a newsletter approximately
once a week a full of useful information
around whatever and your data will be
stored on MailChimp or whatever then you
could always think too much if that
should be enough to cover it the second
thing is to make sure that you've got a
really good privacy policy Reversi
privacy I don't know whichever way you
want to say it make sure got a really
good document on how you handle Whois
data if you're using MailChimp that kind
stuff and again you'll find templates
for these documents on the web
I don't know what the dog the dog is

you are an easy life then I recommend
that you avoid dogs and kids she's still

you can build Firefox browsers for
example has a great spellcheck built
into it but your grammar is quite good
on there's a number of extensions
available for Chrome also that do spell
checking and stuff Ali says how do we
feed other fit sorry how do we find
other affiliate programs other than the
stupid Amazon one is stupid because of
low pay rates well Amazon does have a
very low Commission rate but necessarily
make you stupid it has a lot of products
for you to promote which is a good
things it allows you to create lots of
content and even though the pay rates
are quite low if you ask Doug who was on
earlier I don't know if he still is he
may have gone Doug has created websites
using Amazon affiliate that make
thousands so don't let the low
Commission put you off however if you do
want to find other food programs you've
got a couple of options the first is you
can go to an affiliate Network kind of
network is a collection of merchants and
you join the network and then you get
access to those merchants so a couple of
examples of good affiliate networks are
commission junction which is at CJ comm
there's a filly at window which is at a
win com
there's Clickbank and there's share a
sale and they're the few that I can
think I've taught my head you could
always just Google Affiliate Network as
well you'd probably find some so that's
one way then once you've joined up those
network says how you can do a search and
find merchants and on networks like
Affiliate window there are all the big
guys on there so pretty much any shop
that you might have seen online you'll
probably find it on one of those
networks especially Affiliate window the
next option you got is if there's a
particular product or merchant or a
company you want to promote a lot of
them already have an affiliate program
so you just go to the website scroll
down to the footer see if they've got a
link to their affiliate program and just
join up that way I hope that helps
David's got a question does anything on
the Amazon API come under gdpr I don't
think so disclaimer reviews I don't
think so it's not really personal
information it might have a name
attached to it but that's about it
Larry also recommends ShareASale as I
mentioned multiplayer games agrees with
Larry that Gao sounds worth checking out
yeah there's loads of merchants on
chesil I'm on that one as well

about cookies ad networks Amazon API
another an affiliate cookies and user
information would you debar not really
as long as you have a good privacy
policy in that mentions that you're
gonna be using cookies for affiliate
tracking and for analytics for that kind
of stuff you should be fine I mean to be
honest I'm not worried - worried I mean
there was a lot of worry when the whole
cookie consent thing came out I say
about a year or so back on all of my
sites I still haven't got the message
that says this website uses a cookie
click accept to make sure to you know to
say that you have to do that I still
haven't got that I'm still not worried
that someone from the EU is gonna knock
on door and try and find me I just I
think a lot of these rules aren't
particularly enforceable the only time
you might get unstuck with them is if
you're just being stupid with it if you
are mistreating people's information if
you are kind of just storing it in a
very unsecure way maybe in like a word
document on a shared server or something
like that
if you are yes a spamming people and
generally just being horrible with
people's data if you're a generally nice
guy and using like things like MailChimp
and not spamming then I don't think
you're ever gonna have an issue with
gdpr the only time there's gonna be
problem is if there is a problem so if
you do spam someone or if you do get
hacked and they take a look later just
say if you're using services like
MailChimp shouldn't be an issue
emmanuel says if a theme with
WooCommerce will it also attend yeah
should do omnious says for me I prefer
drop shipping instead of affiliate did
you expand on that a little bit if you
saw last week stream and last week's
video on my other channel we're talking
all about affiliate marketing against
drop shipping and you know I'm me
personally I would always go for
affiliate marketing so I'm interested to
hear your angle as to why you think
Hawaii preferred drop shipping over
affiliate ar7 well it still affect you
after gb leaves the EU probably not or
maybe it will I'd only get onto brexit
it's a touchy subject is split this
country down the middle
people that you you know you were
friends with before now it's a bit more
awkward so I don't want to talk about
practically too much but I'd imagine
what would happen is when we do leave if
we leave I mean it's still not happened
yet but if we do leave then we'll just
probably adopt a lot of the laws that
are already in EU so like the GDP law
will just kind of take it and give it
another name and it will be the same

you ever considered becoming a web host
retail and if so do you think it was
worth it so I am a web hosting reseller
and the reason why I have retail hosting
it kind of comes back from when I used
to do client stuff so before doing you
know YouTube in a big way I used to sell
websites to people WordPress websites
and a great thing to sell them would be
hosting a couple of reasons for that
first is you can make money obviously
second thing is everything is then under
your control whereas if you you know
build a website for a client and they've
got their own hosting and there's a
problem and then you you know you're
dealing with someone else who's hosting
and you might not be familiar with it or
if there's a problem on the hosting you
kind of back and forth and support
tickets that kinda stuff it's a
nightmare
so yeah I do have a reseller hosting
I've used it for a while I pay for the
reseller package then I charge my
clients you know more than what I'm
paying for the Rhys
package yeah it's a good thing nowadays
not so much I'm generally more of an
affiliate for hosting because you know
I'm doing youtuber stuff so I'm just
recommending hosting and go from there
by the way another video that I'm
working on is all-around hosting I'm
gonna test out eight or ten hosting
providers with a wordpress website and
find out what once and for all which
one's the best

recommend a wordpress plug and delete me
for customers delete themselves I'm not
seeing that particular plugin but it
does sound good actually if you check
out the WordPress plug-in market library
thing where all the free plugins there's
a number of gdpr plugins on there which
I think would probably make WordPress a
little bit more gdpr compliant so now if
you storing people's data on WooCommerce
that's something you need to be aware of
that people need to be able to get into
that and delete their record and that
kind of thing
now I'm sure with the kind of updates
that come with WooCommerce they will fix
that but I did notice I would say that
there are a number of gdpr plugins
already available
if here's Helen I did say if I'm yeah I
don't let's not talk about breaks it
it's too controversial but they say I'm
hoping that you know now we've actually
seen what's happening with bricks it and
what it actually means for the country
and that you know it we're probably not
gonna do
no one's gonna benefit from it because
you know we're not gonna you know shut
the borders and we're not going to leave
the customs union and all that kind of
stuff and we're not gonna have an extra
450 million quid a week whatever the HS
know that stuff is gonna happen because
it was all you know misinformation that
maybe once we've got the facts of the
deal that we can maybe put it to the
people again as another referendum or at
least to the House of Commons and we can
decide whether we still really want to
go go ahead with it yeah Larry agrees
he's not worried about GDP ah he thinks
it's the EU looking for big companies to
get some large fines yep probably

what you mentioned earlier that it
prefers dropship bringing over affiliate
he said because some websites like
Amazon now use six months for canceling
your feelings if you don't get traffic
to a website and as for dropshipping you
are free to have traffic the way and
time you want that's true but to be
honest you should be able get on traffic
in six months and get some sales and if
you didn't see the stream or the video
last week just to clarify why affiliate
marketing is way better in dropshipping
the main reason being you don't have to
do with customers you can just take the
money and not have to worry about
customer service which is the number one
benefit for me if you want to know that
the other reasons are check out last

something that I have got on my list I
made a review fact I'm a kind of do a
review of all of those sort of big
themes and just take you for it I want
to let you know what I think

story is as you guys know I go to Spain
quite a lot which is part of Europe and
part of the EU and over in Spain there
is a lot of expats or you know British
people that live out in Spain and I just
it's not actually that funny even this

that people that were immigrants you
know they're British people living in

would maybe have an understanding about
immigration and and enjoy the benefits
of being in Europe that you know they
can just go and live in Spain and work
in Spain and you know it's pretty easy
you think that those people might be all
for EU stuff in Europe and whatever but
no no no no no no even guys over there
that like running bars or businesses
they're all brexit and I've put my foot
in it so many times just assuming that
they were kind of you know remain as we
call them all as they would call us
Ramona's and that they bill for Europe
but yeah so I just it's bizarre the
whole thing is bizarre and they say
things like oh we want our London back
and stuff and I'm just thinking it but
what would you say if the Spanish
started saying we want our Spain back
and get rid of you English which they
don't do because they're a nice tolerant
people the Spanish but yeah that's the
story it's not funny sorry but yeah

affect email marketing yeah it does but
if you use a it's a big deal when it
comes to email marketing if you use a
reputable system like MailChimp or
similar you make it very clear when
people opt in what you're gonna be
sending them and how often and make it
very easy for them to unsubscribe and
delete their records and have a really
good privacy policy you'll be fine
Emanuel says how do you know if a theme
is ecommerce ready it should generally
say on the features of the theme it
should say that it supports WooCommerce
which is you know one of the most
popular platforms for selling stuff on
online with WordPress if it doesn't say
that then it probably isn't ecommerce
compatible though most themes can can
fit and can work with commerce you just
make your life easier though if you
choose a WooCommerce compatible one
Whitehead says I'd love another breaks
to vote I think the result would be
different this time possibly maybe I
should just do a stream all around
brexit I probably get a lot more viewers
and a lot more people wanting to kill me
Doug says that most stuff seems tough to
me like saying Hal from your email when
if you know anyone times a week but then
send more every now and then I didn't
know generally be fine I think generally
you'll be fine as long as you don't be a
horrible spammer and you know deliver
some good value in you emails I think
you'll be fine
I think everyone's getting a lot of bit
excited about this gdpr thing for no
reason I I think small businesses and
whatever generally are fine generally as
long as they're using a good system I
mean some of the stuff people used to do
you know before MailChimp and stuff
where you just copy and paste people's
email addresses into the CC field on
your Outlook and send from there and my
stuff
those days are hopefully gone and people
are a little bit more sensible about how
they send emails now and and yeah just
using giving people an unsubscribe link
you know before people never used to be
able to unsubscribe that easily or even
if you did not subscribe they still keep
sending your emails do you remember back
in there you get an email and it would
say you know to unsubscribe just reply
with the word unsubscribe that would
never work it's an edge case and Aweber

ah favorite stuff you still talk about
brexit I'm not gonna read it all the
breaks comments but that's a very
interesting point and good on your
brother Manuel says why do you recommend
wpengine overfly well I just generally
got on better there was a reason I can't
really be wise with flywheel though they
do something funny in the way that their
system works it might have changed now

so I had a big client running on
flywheel big multinational client
multi-million dollar company I was
hosting their site on flywheel because I
thought you know that's kind of
enterprise level stuff there was a
problem with the site I can't remember
the exact problem but there was a
problem I needed to get hold of someone
at flywheel and I couldn't and that was
enough to put me off and because you
know I had this big client going the
websites don't work him whatever and I'm
going ok let me try and fix this I was
probably the hosting ok and and they're
in the States
which is not problem I mean I use a lot
of American companies i Hostgator for
example are in the states and that's not
a problem but they were in the States
and for whatever reason you know they
were closed because the time difference
and I couldn't hold of anyone it was a
nightmare
whereas with WP engine who I've probably
got maybe 20 sites with them now
whenever I have a problem night all day
I simply log in and go on live chat
generally I get an answer instantly and
they are so helpful even if it's tough
to do with you know third party plugins
you know stuff that's three nothing to
do with them I found some random plug-in
and I've installed it off work president
it's not working
they'll help me out with that and
they'll get it working so I think it was
purely down to support which is really
important when it comes to choosing
hosting I just found that WP engine
support is excellent and on top of that
you know they're just the servers are
fast they do daily backups and yeah I
just fell in love with 30-pin I had a
back spiritual flywheel so that was it
Helen says soon as GPR is akin to the
y2k scare mongering you remember that
y2k stuff I was a young IT guy back then
and made a load of money just checking
people's computers you know going up to
the computer and selling it to you know
31st December 1999 and then letting it
click over and seeing if it blew up and
guess what most undid n't fact very few
didn't most work for him but there was
scare mongering about the planes are
gonna fall out the sky and all the
banking systems gonna crash heady days
of the year 2000 my quest is to merge
him have an automated setting where

done a video on this you can add your
own products you can add so products
that you're gonna ship yourself you can
add other affiliate products as well

this it's fine if people only buy one of
one or two products and that they're
from the same merchants if people add
two products from different merchants to
their basket
they then gets to checkout you then
can't redirect them because they've got
you know one product from our zone one
product from somewhere else which side
do you redirect me to so generally you'd
want all the products to be from the
same merchants if you're going to use
the shopping cart if you're not going to
use a shopping cart
then you go ahead and add two products
from different motions that's fine
you can turn off the shopping cart
feature within your Woo's own settings

get some traffic and you'll get some
commission though if you want to make
some real big Commission you're gonna
need that content so that's where a blog
site comes in will probably go through
this topic again sometime

advertised that's just the end on that
you can afford to advertise affiliate
sites but there's a couple of factors
you need to keep in mind number one is
how much commission you're gonna be
earning off your products advertising is
a lot easier if you get paid a high
commission so Amazon affiliate may not
be the best program to run ads on the
second thing is you need to make sure
that you get some value from that
traffic so that means rather than just
sending them straight off to a merchant
you need them to come through your site
and then you need them to engage in your
social media you never become a follower
sand like that and you need them to join
your email list that way you can sell to
that person more than once and get the
value from them but yeah Amazon sorry
advertising definitely is viable
providing you do it right and if you
check back for the channel a few months
back I did a video all about this stuff
