3 Easy Ways To Overcome Procrastination

hey what's up everyone this is stefan
from projectlifemastery.com and today
I'm going to share with you three easy
ways for you to overcome procrastination
now I'm sure you have something in your
life that you know that you should do or
that you need to do but you're just not
doing it
maybe that's going to the gym maybe
that's exercising maybe it's to lose
weight maybe that's to make a call maybe
that's to work on your business maybe
it's for you to you know do your taxes
or your accounting your bookkeeping or
something something that you know that
you should do but you're not doing it
you procrastinate
now before I shirt you guys have three
ways to overcome that let's first look
at why do we procrastinate why are you
not doing what you know you should do
and the answer that I have for you is
because you associate or a link pain to
doing the thing that you know that you
should do as long as you associate or
link pain to doing it then the chances
are that you're not going to do it and
that pain can be in the form of
discomfort you know it's gonna be a lot
of effort a lot of work a lot of energy
maybe it's gonna be stressful maybe it's
going to be challenging you know and
you're dreading the process of doing it
which is you associating pain to it and
the problem is if you have that item
here that you want to do but your pain
that you're making in your mind is all
your perception by the way it's all the
meaning that you're giving to that task
or that activity you're making it be so
much bigger than what it really is but
as long as you have that pain attached
to it you're not gonna do it that's why
people don't exercise they linked pain
to exercise that's why they don't you
know work on their business or do their
accounting or whatever it might be for
you cleaning the house they linked pain
to that so the first tip that I have for
you the first way to overcome this is
whatever that pain that you have there
you can either lower that pain and
change your perception of what it is
that you need to do or you can increase
your desire the reasons that you have to
do it and take action to be able to do
what you know you should do the desire
for that has to be greater than the pain
okay because if your desire to do that
is down here not sure if you guys can
see this it's down here the
pain is up here this is going to
overpower this it's going to overpower
your desire so you got to build this up
the way you build it up is through
reasons so you're gonna have your Y your
purpose for doing this activity okay for
taking action so the way you can elicit
that is by asking yourself questions ask
yourself well by not doing this what is
that gonna cost me in my life because if
you can link more pain to not doing it
and you realize oh my god if I don't go
to the gym then man that's gonna that
you know I'm gonna I'm not gonna be in
shape I'm not gonna feel good about
myself I'm gonna have low self-esteem
I'm not gonna be healthy I'm not gonna
live long period of time I'm not gonna
have the pride the confidence I'm never
gonna be able to attract the person that
I want the person I have in my life
already they're not gonna be really
attracted to me they deserve so much
more and that doesn't feel good but that
pain will start to grow the reasons the
desires grow and then all of a sudden
the pain of not doing it is far greater
than the pain of just doing it you can
also build up reasons for the benefit
ask yourself what will this give me how
will this enhance my life you know maybe
by going to the gym or exercising it's
gonna give you more of that confidence
maybe it's gonna you know allow you to
look in the mirror and smile be proud
maybe you have some sort of event coming
up like a wedding or a competition or
something that you want to beat your
best for you've got to remind yourself
of all of a sudden when you stack that
then then you know it's gonna be so
immense it's gonna be so strong that
doing the thing is gonna be so much
easier
okay so understanding how pain and
pleasure works understanding why they're
not doing it link it consequence to not
doing it as well as linking the benefit
the pleasure to actually doing what you
know you should do that right there
should immediately get you taking action
the second way is oftentimes we
procrastinate because we make it so much
bigger than what it really is we make
it's just so big in our head you know my
god I got to do my bookkeeping and
there's just so much to do oh man it's
gonna take so long it's gonna take the
whole day and we always exaggerate it
you always make things much bigger than
really what they are oftentimes when you
just
it's like beer right you're afraid to do
something but when you do it you realize
oh my god it wasn't as scary as I
thought and you gotta understand that's
that's just your brain playing tricks on
you
it's just messing with you with that so
what I often try to do is i chunked down
whatever I'm procrastinating on that
it's just so big in my mind into smaller
steps
so again just using the weight that you
know going to the gym or exercise
example maybe for you your action is I
mean I've got to do 30 minutes of cardio
and you're not doing it you're
procrastinating it because you just make
it I got to put on my shoes I've got to
do all this stuff I've got to go outside
it's gonna take too much time break it
down into a small chunk what's the first
step that you can do to make it less
overwhelming for yourself so man maybe
I'm just gonna go for a walk I'm going
for a walk is a lot easier and less
intimidating less overwhelming than
going for a run for 30 minutes you can
even break it down even smaller you know
I'm just gonna go outside I'm just gonna
you know get some fresh air you know and
just by doing that you got to put on
your shoes you got to get dressed and
what happens is just by you taking that
first step you get the you get momentum
from that okay you know once you're in
motion things stay in motion and that's
what leads you to kind of sticking
around cuz now you're in a different
state you're already ready you're
feeling good by taking action being
productive and then that's when you get
the momentum to actually then start
going for that walk going for the run
and then before you know it you've done
it you know you've gone for a 30-minute
run same thing can be said if you
procrastinate to read a book maybe you
just make it such a big thing in your
head to read maybe your goal is to read
30 minutes a day you're not doing it
chunk it down maybe you just read for
read one page read for one minute you
know read a couple paragraphs and what
you find and when you sit down and you
just start that process you're gonna get
addicted to it you're gonna start to
feel good and then before you know it
that minute will go by that first page
will lead to the second page a third
page the fourth and fifth so break down
things into smaller chunks don't make it
to be so big okay start really small and
make that easy for yourself set yourself
to win not to fail don't make things so
hard on yourself and when you do do it
reward yourself give yourself a pat on
the back tell yourself good job because
whatever gets rewarded will get repeated
you want to reinforce that and the last
way that I have for you to overcome
procrastination is understand the
five-second rule okay this is a concept
it was made up by Mel Robbins and no
Robbins did a TED talk you can look her
up and check it out but um you know she
does share that oftentimes our brain
takes over you know we know that we
should do it we have this idea we say
okay I'm gonna do this I'm gonna do that
and what happens is we hesitate and
hesitation kills as long as you hesitate
then your brain just makes it even
bigger and you associated pain you think
about it and then before you know it
it's just too big in your head and
you're not gonna do it so the
five-second rule is you not hesitating
giving yourself five seconds within five
seconds you got to take an immediate
action no matter what that is smaller
big an immediate action and you do that
so that you can basically hijack your
brain the way you hijack your brain is
you do a countdown at the moment you
have that desire the thing that you know
you should do do a countdown so your
brain can't process and think about the
pain the consequence of whatever it is
and just do a countdown five four three
two one once it hits one you just do it
so think of it in the way of jumping
into a pool and oftentimes people they
want to jump into the pool but they
procrastinate the longer that you
hesitate and you procrastinate the worse
that it gets the harder it's gonna be
the same thing if you ever went bungee
jumping or skydiving or something like
that you know the longer that you wait
to think about it the more that fear
builds up and you don't want to hesitate
it's one of the worst things that you
can do so before you get a chance to
think about it do the countdown and just
do it I remember my early 20s I went
skydiving and man it was definitely
something that I had a lot of anxiety
and a lot of fear of and thankfully I
was there with I was doing a tandem
skydive and you know when we're up in
the airplane I didn't even have a chance
to think the instructor was like all
right boom we're going got up to the
ledge I'm look
down the wind is like trying to suck me
out and I'm like terrified and he goes 5
4 3 2 1 go boom pushes me I didn't have
a chance to back out I even have a
chance to think about it it was just
before you know it I was falling you
know I was flying and you can use that
same principle for waking up in the
morning for whatever it is that you know
you that you should do okay and if I
were to throw in one last tip or
strategy for you guys what I find to be
one of the most powerful things in my
life has been my morning ritual and you
guys probably know this I've shared this
a lot but by having a ritual first thing
in the morning what you're doing is
you're making sure that you are
operating at your absolute best for that
day you're putting yourself first you're
giving yourself energy often first part
of the morning you have the most
willpower as well so there's a lot
easier to do things in the morning
versus later on in that day when you're
more tired and exhausted but you're
preparing yourself to be at your best
when you're at your best you're going to
be unstoppable man there's gonna be
things that come up throughout the day
you're gonna be able to do it so much
easier because of the state that you're
in because of just how you feel and
oftentimes what we do is based on the
emotional states that we're in you know
our states our thoughts determine our
feelings our feelings determine our
actions so if you set off the you know
the the beginning of the day to make
sure that you've got the right thoughts
you got the right feeling that's the
right state of mind and you're making
sure you're healthy you're strong you're
vibrant you're alive I find men like you
know I can do I can I'm just on fire for
the rest of the day I have no problem
taking on those big tasks those big
leverage activities in my life because
of that ritual that I did to make sure
that I'm at my best if you don't have a
ritual and you just wake up and you're
tired you're groggy you don't feel like
it you're stressed then yeah I can see
why you know it's hard to get yourself
to do anything so that's why that ritual
is so powerful I'm not gonna go too much
into in this video I've got other videos
where I've talked about rituals and
whatnot but I do have a book that I want
to give you it's a PDF ebook that has 21
morning rituals I call it my twenty-one
morning ritual cheat sheet
