how to be more accountable to yourself
this is stefan from
projectlifemastery.com and in this
episode of ask Stefan I'm going to
answer a question from Rick James which
yourself I actually think there's two
different ways of looking at this one is
being accountable to yourself the other
way is being accountable to other people
I think that being accountable to other
people is actually more powerful than
just being accountable for yourself if
you're only accountable to yourself you
can easily back out is something for
example how many times have you said
that you're gonna do something committed
to it but then only came up short maybe
you didn't feel like it you felt tired
you felt lazy and by backing out of that
there's not that much of a consequence
so it's not that big of a deal being
only accountable to yourself because
there's no consequence to not doing it
so if you don't feel like doing it
you're just keeping that to yourself and
there's no external pressure or pain and
really enforcing you to actually do it
whereas when you're accountable to other
people now you have leverage on yourself
you care about what other people think
you don't want to let other people down
you want to make sure that you're
respecting other people as well and so
that's why it's always more useful to
have an accountability buddy a
mastermind group a coach a mentor
somebody that you can be accountable to
because that's going to increase the
chances of you actually doing it and
actually following through so I do think
that you need both you need to be
accountable to yourself and you can
increase that just by raising your
standards creating higher expectations
of yourself demanding more on yourself
part of that is you create new beliefs
or rules that but when you violate them
you give yourself pain so it becomes
unacceptable for you to not do what you
said because you don't want to be
incongruent with your standards
your beliefs and your rules of yourself
you know a great example of this is
Michael Jordan Michael Jordan the best
basketball player has ever lived he you
know one of his quotes that I love from
him is that he said that he never
competes with other people because when
you compete with other people there's a
limit to that because what if you're the
best in the world
then you know how can you compete with
other people because you're better than
everyone else so he's
that he never competes with others he
only competes with himself he demands
more from themselves and expects more
from himself than anyone else ever could
that's power that's being truly
accountable to yourself however Michael
Jordan was still smart enough to
recognize that he needed coaches in his
life he needed Mentors
he needed people outside of themselves
to push him to challenge him and to help
hold him accountable as well that's why
he had Phil Jackson that's why he hired
Tim Grover you know as a coach and then
someone that can help train him to
develop his skill set his athletic
ability his fitness all those sort of
things as well only really stupid people
think that they can only be accountable
to themselves and only try to do things
on their own the people that are the
most successful in the world still find
coaches and other people to help hold
them accountable because just being
accountable to yourself is gonna be a
fail it's not gonna work out a hundred
percent of the time whereas if you can
get some outside influence then that's
gonna push you over the edge and push
you even further in their life so always
try to improve your accountability to
yourself raise your standards but at the
same time get some help getting the
accountability buddy get a coach a
mentor a program something that can help
you and push you to go to that next
level in your life and that's I think
one of the most important things that
you can do I've done it in my life
that's actually one of the reasons why I
created project life mastery com I
created it for myself back in 2012 I
posted my goals 2012 my goals you can go
back on YouTube and find that I did that
as a way to be accountable to myself
right and to other people by sharing my
goals I'm much more likely to follow
through and actually do it it creates
this pressure it's uncomfortable other
people are gonna judge you if you fail
that creates this urgency in this demand
on yourself this pressure to raise your
standards and actually go for and
actually accomplish great things I've
done that with fitness competitions
publicly declaring this is what I'm
gonna do and that creates accountability
on myself so I've used project life
mastery and I still use it to this day
by sharing my goals and my monthly goals
reports I do that for myself primarily
because it
helps me and it just so happens that it
inspires a lot of people and helps other
people in the process as well which is a
great thing
so accountability to other people focus
on that as well as well as being
accountable to yourself so hopefully
