so this is the Novus spirit it's owned
by the richest man in British Columbia
Jimmy Patterson I love Jimmy Patterson
story because he started from scratch he
actually used the only car dealership
that's how he got started the first
business right talk about salespeople he
was also very well known for every
single month it's gonna fire the bottom
like sales people every single month
right right this is well know so this is
a beautiful boat now I'm not a bald
person but yeah every time I walk by
this I get so inspired yeah he started
from absolutely absolutely nothing right
this is maybe a 10 20 billion yeah five
fifteen million dollar boat ride right
there so I'm just maybe I something be
good that we talked about today why do
you think people don't become wealthy in
spite of the intention or they want it
and they say they want it yeah but
what's the difference because you and I
we both start from scratch yeah right we
didn't we was we weren't born with the
same West Point in our mouth we all we
both build our business to where it is
today so what do you think are the top
reasons why people don't become wealthy
yeah yeah let's dive into it I think
there's there's a core mindset between
those that are successful versus those
that fail and we both work with so many
people now we've seen the bottom we've
obvious so yeah let's sit down and
discuss that let's do that go see hey
guys I'm here with Dan Locke and we're
talking about 10 reasons why most people
fail and don't achieve wealth so Dan
what do you see some of the biggest
reasons oh there's so many but I think
the biggest one is most people they have
what I call the positive mindset versus
the prosperity mindset and this is not
like Law of Attraction touchy-feely
like this isn't real
yeah you guys think about it most people
when they are growing up their parents
chances are are not wealthy
their relatives on our wealth their
friends are not wealthy tell the school
that I went to and that's his private
school or something right
the people around them their friends are
also not wealthy the parents are not
wealthy house so if you think about we
grow an environment like that the way
you look at money the way you look at
wealth we what only you've heard of they
say that money doesn't grow on trees
the root of all evil is a root of all
evil all these things it is not a
healthy thing when we are trying to
build wealth when we try to build a
business and make money I'll describe
that it's almost you driving a car
you're depressing like this you're
hustling but you have the emergency
brake on
that's your negative believe that's your
poverty mindset right what's your - oh
yeah then people have mixed associations
I think a great book that summarized it
was Rich Dad Poor Dad yes right so
Robert Kiyosaki is - dad is Rich Dad you
know hit the ball as poor dad said you
got to go to school get a bigger job and
that was a whole mindset around that and
that's what's often taught to us in
society you can and and that's just how
society works it's not really designed
for you to create wealth and financial
against you the whole system the old
words against yeah and even when I look
you know what I learned in school a lot
of it had no value to my life today no
and on the contrast of it the rich dad
said okay don't go to university start a
business learn about investing invest
and learn and grow and improve yourself
and I think that's that's a key
difference between those mindsets and I
think another one with the poverty
mindset oftentimes that mindsets all
around extracting value yeah versus the
wealthy mindset is about adding value
providing value you know creating a
product or service to add value or even
if you might have a career or a job the
way you create more wealth is finding
ways to add more value yes if money is a
byproduct of value creation is period
right now you look at anyone that is
making any significant of my money I
guarantee you if they're making millions
either they're impacting millions yes in
terms of scale right or they're
impacting me like doing million dollars
thing multi-mineral thing in terms of
like magnitude right so if they're
selling
a piece of property for 10 million
dollars right either width or depth you
cannot look at someone like you know
like yourself impacting millions of
people and that's why you make millions
versus you have a job you're impacting a
very small not providing as much value
yeah not providing you you may be
impacting your boss the managers its
life but that's about it yeah you're not
helping impacting a lot of people yeah
yeah so what do you see as another
reason I would say besides the poverty
mindset about having that and also I
think lack of commitment yes which I
always say wealth is committing to one
idea over time yes
so most people they it's like they're
running they're running a relay race
they get to that almost like 399 meters
and then they give up how many times in
your life that you felt like oh man
that's it like even the dating business
I'm done yeah you don't want to give how
many times you could you could have
given up along the way many times yeah I
think I see also as focus right have the
ability to focus on what you're trying
to do and not get distracted because I
see a lot of people that get caught up
in dabbling yeah right shiny objects or
and and the world we live in today there
are so many things competing for our
attention that and our attention spans
getting shorter and shorter and shorter
just because of social media and
everything that a lot of people have a
hard time just really focusing but not
just that I think commitment is beyond
that it's it's like you got both feet in
you don't have one foot in one foot out
like a lot of people they not to be
total right it start a business they're
already thinking they're back up like
you've got to have no plan B you earn
the blow yeah so you have to take the
island that's right and there's no
possibility of retreat or surrender
that's true commitment and when you have
that when you're that committed to it
nothing will stop you will find the way
or you'll make the way is like the
the movie you get richer you're not
trying yeah yeah exactly
that convent ality it cannot be well
I'll have my safe secure job I'll see
how that works out I hate it and you can
hear the language I'm interested I'm
considering what's the refund policy do
it for 30 days yeah they're already
planning in their head why it's not
gonna work it's not gonna work it's not
no it's not gonna work and they know
it's not gonna work it's it here's the
thing if that's how you operate in one
area of your life that's how you operate
in all other areas of your life right
yeah how you do anything is how I do
everything
nothing works unless you do it starts
with you first and the mindset because
the opportunities are there the
strategies are there the resources there
you can buy it you can invest in there's
mentors there's coaches but again if you
don't commit to it yourself you're not
gonna get the results some people in
some way it's sometimes now the
Millennials the younger people because
it pensions the attention span is so
short we're even watching a video like
this Oh a six-minute video is too long
yeah this is a long freaking video yeah
but they cannot focus
it's that is too long Instagram story
ten seconds
yeah yeah even dead is too long five
seconds yeah and I know you know we both
are fans of mastery yeah and you teach
have a high income skill and focus in
becoming very very good at that one
skill that you can then use to create a
lot of your wealth but to master
something and I don't go deep be it you
know it take they say it takes 10,000
hour or 10,000 hours approximately ten
years to really master something okay to
become like a true master at that yeah
but a lot of people they want to get
rich quick right they want they're
looking for a short term they don't want
to put in the time they don't want to
put in the hours they're not really
committed to doing what it takes in
order to become a master yeah and then
now John I could use this like the
demotion while you got the black bear
right you have to be imagine of two
people one person say hey you know I
want to get
black by the story this historical so
this this guy he goes into a karate
school he said you know what son say I
want to be a black belt
they're pretty ambitious you're pretty
strong I think you're pretty good
it's what's gonna take I think if you
come to class two times a week two times
a week we practice two hours each time
in four years with your ability I think
you'll be a black belt the kid is saying
for years I thought I'll get in four
months I don't have four years I don't
want to come like two times a week and
train for hours every weekend not do
that well you're not gonna get a black
belt another guy shows up who is shorter
skinnier less flexible yeah less talent
ask the sense that hey sensei I want to
be a black girl oh you want a black belt
kid is gonna be tough I'll do whatever
it takes I should teach me how do I do
it well for you you're probably gonna
take you six years you know come in five
times a week you gotta train two hours
each time then maybe six or seven years
you'll get a black belt that kid said
when can I start yeah who's gonna be
successful yeah nei there's so many
people I I was not talented finding me I
was shy I was insecure I I was not I did
not have any of these gifts in any way
and I know you as well yes we didn't
start this way and there's tons of
people I had business partners that were
so charismatic I mean like if they
wanted to and they really committed
themselves they could be doing amazing
things this but yeah it doesn't come
down to that ability it's just how bad
do you want it because if you're better
if you want it bad enough you will learn
it you'll grow you'll improve your
change I'll do whatever in order to
become that kind of person that can
create that well and I think my if
people ask me what's like the number one
quality I have I think it's very
important that's contributing to my
success I think it's consistency then
I'm just more consistent remember back
then even when I was sharing with you
I'm starting my youtube channel yeah I
had I don't know a few hundred maybe a
thousand drivers right and I said I'm
just gonna keep at it
just gonna keep at it I'm gonna chip
away at first sir slow very slow very
slow but I didn't know
so my career like they said I so many
friends more talented more gifted more
resources but they all give up alone
they just they go away right even in our
space yeah how many people in our
education into the marketing space we
can name so many of them are gone we can
count how many after 10 years desk you
around I'm doing well to be consistent
you had that belief that you believed
that it was worth it you believe that
it's gonna work you believe in yourself
and it's just a matter of time right and
a lot of people they don't believe
enough in themselves or in the process
that they just get discouraged at any
moment there's adversity or frustration
just wanna throw in the towel right but
it anything anything you want to create
I'm actually happy that it's hard yes
yes if it was easy in every idiot
everybody would be everybody everyone
may be successful right and success is
only reserved for those that are
committed that truly wanted they're
committed to adding value to becoming
the best they can be
and I'm happy that it's set up that way
as again otherwise we'd have a bunch of
selfish takers and complainers negative
people being successful with it and they
don't deserve it if they're not
committed enough for it I think that's a
easy it won't also give you a tip in
terms of like why people give up they
get discouraged
I think it's initially when they set
expectations they have the wrong
expectations so let me give an example
let's say you want to learn affiliate
marketing and you join Stephan's course
let's say your expectation is well I'm
going to join the course I won't take
the course and we've seen 10 days I'm
gonna be making 20,000 a month since are
you gonna fail yeah
period because you have the wrong
spectator then when you fail what
happens yeah this doesn't work yeah
Stefan sucks this is no good
affiliate marketing sucks I suck
whatever it is you're gonna blame you're
gonna be a big time you gotta point
fingers now the same program same mentor
are just expectations you know what I'm
gonna I'm gonna join this program and I
know maybe I'm not a smallish maybe this
is a whole new world for me in your
skill I know maybe even the first six
months I'm not gonna make any money
I just know maybe I'm not gonna make any
money I'm just gonna learn it I'm gonna
take baby steps and then my first goal
is to make my first five hundred dollars
a month that's it yeah you know my goal
is bet by the end of year I'm gonna make
five hundred to a thousand a month I'm
happy yeah when you're adjusting
spectating like that maybe you make two
thousand five thousand ten thousand it
doesn't matter I'm saying adjust
expectation based on reality where you
are yeah and I I call it focusing on the
process because a process to anything
and even before you focus on the money
just get a website up that's you know
like there's all these milestones you
can celebrate which are still results
yes but and and the process leads to the
money correct right so focusing on that
process because I believe it's that
product like for example with YouTube
you didn't say like you might have the
goal you want to have a hundred thousand
subscribers but you know there's a
process and you focus okay I'm gonna do
X number of videos per week and you're
just gonna do that you know that that
process you have control over correct
that will lead to that those Alexa you
focus on what you can control what you
can not control you can't control
necessarily how many subscribers or how
much money I make no but you have to
have the belief of I am producing good
content that people want and I keep that
keep doing it with enough consistent
effort that that is good it's is this so
P so many people give up and you look at
what do we did seriously the YouTube is
a perfect example because Noah stuff it
was even for me yeah I felt holy
this is slow after a couple hundred
videos but once you get there it's fast
Oh once you get there it's always the
bus what's what's another reason you see
a lot of people struggle or I don't
create the world I would say that the
biggest one is like a lack of mentorship
yes I think lack of mentorship I am
where I am today
I mean the books I read they help
seminars I've gone to help courses is
all good but I'm way I'm today because
of my two mentors Ray Allen Jack's and
Dan Pena so the two I've learned from a
lot of people have left for hundreds of
people but they're only two people who I
consider my personal mentors and I I use
this philosophy to learn and think of
all a martial art
right you think about it's an ancient
time in in China martial art come true
how does it get past the skill one
generation to another it's not some DVD
yeah it's not some YouTube video yeah it
is closed or in a circle private door
took years the transfer this is what
I've learned my whole life deadly
killing skill pass on to another person
and that person trains gives them
feedback and deterring and then that's
how it gives passed but somehow I think
in that's more a in a Chinese philosophy
Asian philosophy but in the North
America they don't think about that yeah
it's like fast food yeah hamburger yeah
give me the shortcut take this pill I'll
do that I'll watch that or whatever it
is but they don't think about that's not
how you get good at anything
it's um what allows you to fast track
things right compress decades in the
days I see a lot of people they try to
reinvent the wheel they trying to figure
it out on their own when there's already
other people they've already solved the
problems that you have they've already
figured it out they've already spent the
years to create that result so and the
fast-track for that is to go to those
people and learn directly from them and
I think a lot of people also when it
comes to mentors they kind of approach
it sometimes I'm just trying to take a
person you know we both get a lot of
people they come to Whaley say hey can I
can you be my mentor but they're not
providing any value so why would we you
know we have resources and things that
you can pay for and that's a way that is
a fair exchange of value but even beyond
that because I remember you know in our
situation you're a mentor for me because
I had read your book I would go to your
program but I added value to you the way
that you reached out to me is I promoted
your book yeah I did a youtube video I
shared hey guys this is a book fu money
you made an impact in my life check it
out and you I guess you had noticed that
you're not a lot of downloads or sales
in your book yeah and then reached out
to me because that because I had added
value in some way and here's a key point
Stefan what's adding value without
asking anything return yes he wasn't
thinking hey Dad I promoted no I just
noticed it then I reach out hey Stefan
how you doing right and that's how kind
of we connected right and we lunch
remember at that and this is not here
we are right right I'm doing this
interview it's exactly like that versus
again poor poor person's mentality they
believe oh you're successful you're
obligated to help me like they're this
sense of entitlement just because
someone's successful it doesn doesn't
make they're not obligated to help you
you got to help yourself right if you
don't even demonstrate that you want it
you want it bad enough you don't take
initiative nobody could help you you
don't even help yourself yeah that's
that's truly too big I've had people
come to me in this Stace Stefan I'm
willing to do whatever it takes and I
say okay great
by this course or invest you know get
this or whatever and then all of a
sudden there's this no no no Mike won't
listen
I can't mentor you then you're not
willing to do what is are the things
that I did that I was beside I was
willing to do this is what has gone to
me where I'm at today but you're not
willing to to be open to a mentor
helping you and it's not until you
suspend that disbelief and you decide
that you know I'm gonna just be open
what you've been doing hasn't work
because it's gotten to where you are
today that if you want you keep the what
you've always done you're gonna keep
getting what you've always gotten so you
have to you know for me I I just finally
got to the point I was like I tried to
figure out everything on my own but I
was like you know what this is not
working years have gone by
I've wasted money I've wasted time a
more frustrating stress than ever I'm
just gonna just hire this person and
whatever he says to do I'm just gonna do
it I'm just gonna take action yeah and
that's been a key thing that's allowed
me to to really build my business and I
think in terms of rich and versus poor I
always say poor people at SEL time which
people buy time right okay rich people
you sell your time you're trading hours
for dollars you are working whatever
charge per month or whatever it is rich
people buy time if this something that
was safely time there would shortcut my
process shortcut my learning curve
absolutely like just in the last two
months I have spent about two hundred
and fifty thousand dollars yeah on
consultant coach like groups to it
that's a lot of money for anybody for me
is a lotta money but because I know that
was shave years on loading and the crazy
thing is it's like you don't need to
know no need it's like anything
like you're already success like she I
don't leave this bed but even more so no
sir because you understand realize the
value of it and especially at that point
where when your company certain size
when I spend that money if I just get a
10% improvement or 20% improvement that
is a lot of money and now I'm to a point
where I want to bring in the best to
train my team so why would I don't want
to be cheap all on that I'm not going to
them I'm gonna level with hey read this
ebook yeah no no no what are we working
on let me bring the best of the best
write that check consult with them
directly one on one access I just bring
in the best of the best that's the thing
so now it's beyond just investing myself
I'm investing with my people in my team
that's the next level of thinking but
it's very different from you don't even
want to buy a book you don't
even want to buy spend a couple grand
and trust me both Stefan and I we all
need that couple grand from you it's not
gonna change your life it's not we don't
need it but it is a great difference
test yes truly is you're not resourceful
enough to come up with a couple grand
yeah I hate to say like this will be
tough love if you're 20 years old 30
years or 40 years old if I was you I
would be in Paris I could even come up
with 2k I'll be embarrassed I couldn't
come up with 5k you don't have 5k in
your bank and you're in your 20 30 40 s
like then shame on you Yeah right like
with there's so much money then when
you're gonna change it we're gonna do
something about it yeah when you can see
other people there's no excuse
this is first time I invest in a mentor
I I was broke I was living on my
friend's couch and he I had the option I
was able to come up with some money and
I was like a cat I could either go and
live in my own apartments because I was
embarrassed to live in my friends you
know which in his living room I had this
curtain don't separate and I was single
at the time so I was trying to meet
girls and stuff - right
but then I had this opportunity coach
that was 500 bucks a month minimum
commitment I think was three months and
I was like you know one of those yeah
like I'm gonna I what's gonna get me
further in life I can get my own place
or I could get a coach
for me that that's one thing I just
always remember one of the best
decisions decisions I ever made so and
you look at you know if you keep keep
there whatever money that you have and
you feel like I'm not taking a risk oh I
saved are the money you protect the
little few dollars that you have how is
that gonna change your life you're still
in the same spot I guarantee you three
months from now six months six months
without year from now most gay people
their life just after year it keeps
spinning their money because you're
gonna make money anyways it's what you
do with it and a lot of people are
spinning it on stuff no stuff that's not
really gonna make an impact their life
liability is not assets yeah so listen
if you guys actually you've got a great
program there high ticket closing
program but if you guys go to fu money
with Stefan comm I'll put a link to that
