hey what's up life masters this is
Stefan James from project life mastery
to day I want to help you with your New
Year's resolutions the years coming to
an end and the new year is right around
the corner and if you're like me you're
already getting ready prepared excited
maybe you're already setting some goals
for the new year so that you can hit the
ground running and really make that next
year your best year yet
that's always my goal every single year
I want to make sure that the new year is
better than the year before and that
every single year my life is getting
better if you set that as your goal as
your standard then it will and I love
this time of the year because it's a
fresh opportunity it's a clean slate
that every year the year the past is
dead and gone and you're presented with
this new opportunity to set new goals
commitments and make new decisions that
can transform your life for the better
that can really set a new course a new
direction for your life you know when I
look at my life guys and everything that
I've been blessed to accomplish and
achieve in every aspect of my life I
attribute most of that to setting goals
direction in each area in my life my
health my relationships my business my
finances and I don't always achieve
every goal as you guys know I share my
goals here pretty transparently on my
blog and have since 2012 every single
year I'm not sure if I'll do so next
year or not I'm still undecided about
that but by sharing it and setting goals
you've been able to see what is possible
I do believe that whatever the mind can
conceive and believe it can achieve and
there's a lot that I've learned of
setting goals that I want to share with
you here your resolutions or what not
but also things that have been mistakes
that I've made other people have made
that I want to help you avoid and if
you've never done goal-setting before
that's okay this is a brand new
opportunity it's the time to start that
habit because it's amazing what you can
achieve sometimes you know we often
overestimate what we can do in a year
but underestimate in a decade and when I
look at the last decade of my life what
I've been able to accomplish and do an
experience has been incredible far
beyond what I could even imagined and so
I really want to promote the idea of
goal-setting I think it's really
powerful and life-changing so with that
said let me dive into some things that
can help you number one you want to make
sure that your goals are
marked goals okay smart goal smart is an
acronym for a specific measurable
attainable realistic and having a
timeline okay so let's talk about
specific one big mistake that people
make as their goals are not specific
they say I want to make more money I
want to lose weight but they're not
specific about how much money how much
weight they're not clear on really what
they want and you've got to have that
you've got to have a clear destination
of where you're trying to go so if you
want to make more money how much money
do you want to make in the new year
write that down
write down the dollar amount if it's in
your business write down how much
revenue and how much profit but be
specific about that if you want to lose
weight don't just say I wanna lose
weight because if you lose a pound great
you accomplished your goal but I'm sure
you want to lose more than a pound I'm
sure there's a specific amount of weight
that you want to lose or again or
whatever it is but set that amount if
it's 30 pounds set that is it 30 pounds
of fat 30 pounds of fat and water and
muscle or is it just 30 pounds you don't
care fat muscle water it's just 30
pounds but even being clear on that is
important so whatever goals you're gonna
set make sure it's specific and make
sure it's measurable what makes it
measurable is also when you set an
amount something that you can track your
progress over a period of time if you
know exactly how much you want to make
then you can actually backwards engineer
and break down that if you want to make
that at 12 months then six months you're
gonna make this amount and month three
you got to make that amount you can
actually measure your progress same
thing if you want to lose 30 pounds now
you can actually measure month by month
how many pounds you got to lose every
month in order for you to achieve that
goal now one thing I'm gonna add here
you want goals that are result oriented
but also process oriented so let me
explain the difference a result is that
specific result that you're after
I want to make $100,000 I want to make I
want to lose 30 pounds right
I want to attract and be in a
relationship with an amazing man or
woman and even that by the way you want
to be specific about what you want the
qualities the character the appearance
all of that of that person of what you
want to attract them more clear you are
the easier it is for you to actually
attract it and manifest
stay in your life but going back to
result process so that's the result the
process is what what it takes it's like
the action plan to achieve that result
now the result you don't have full
control over okay you don't have full
control over how much money you make or
how much fat that you lose you have
influence over it but there's no
guarantee sometimes you end up making
less money or more sometimes you end up
not even losing weight but you gain
muscle and you end up looking better at
the end but you got to understand the
process so what I like to do the process
is what you have control over and I set
goals for that so the process of losing
the 30 pounds what what is another goal
you gotta set that is a process-oriented
goal that will support you achieving
that result an example might be that you
got to go to the gym three days a week
you know or five days a week and if you
do that every single week it's going to
lead you to achieving that result of
losing 30 pounds or maybe it's following
a certain diet nutrition program for
five days a week or six days a week and
you have that one cheat day right by
having having that process that's
something that you know you can follow
through on and their actions and habits
that you can do that will lead to that
result of what you ultimately want and
the same thing goes with starting a
business or making money how much money
do you need to save you need to you know
maybe work some extra hours or get a
second job or start your business what
does that entail if it's an online
business okay by month three I'm gonna
have launched a product on Amazon or I'm
gonna have built my blog and I'm gonna
publish a blog post once a week or a
YouTube video once a week or whatever it
is what is that process break that down
as well and have goals for that as well
as the result
okay so specific measurable that will
help you measure it because then you can
see whether or not you're on track you
know when an airplane is taken off and
it's going from Los Angeles to New York
it knows how to get there based on the
specific destination
now when that airplanes in the sky is
actually off course more so most of the
time you know the winds and everything
make that airplane go off course but
what allows it to course adjust and get
back on track is knowing that
destination of where it wants to be so
it can always make the adjustments along
the way to get there
with your goals you know you want to
have a measurable goal that you could
check in on an irregular basis to
determine whether or not you're on track
so that you can course adjust okay so
specific measurable attainable and
realistic what does that mean so a
mistake that a lot of people make
including myself with sitting goals that
are too unattainable too unrealistic now
I'm all for unrealistic but unrealistic
comes from the vision that you have for
your life like the 10-year vision you
want that to be unrealistic you want to
say 10 years from now I can be a
millionaire if I want or a billionaire
or have a boat have an island living in
a pentose and buy a home a mansion
whatever it is you can absolutely
achieve some pretty incredible
unrealistic things in a 10-year span but
most people they set unrealistic goals
in a year and that's not the proper use
of that so for example some people they
set the goal I want to make a million
dollars in a year but they've never made
more than 60-thousand in a year in their
life that's pretty unrealistic or
they're gonna say I want to lose a
hundred pounds and they've never lost
ten pounds before I want to build an
online business and make a hundred
thousand in my first year but they've
never even made any money online and
they're brand-new and they have no
experience what happens when you set
these goals that are so unrealistic as
you set them and then every year you
come up short every year your success
rate is zero and you do a good effort in
but you're wondering you know I'm
setting these goals but it's not working
I'm setting these goals but you're after
a year I'm failing and what that does to
your brain and your psyche is you lose
out confidence and belief in setting
goals you think well why even set a goal
this year because every year I failed
every year I set goals and never fall
through and never did it and it never
materialized and so you get discouraged
and you don't get any momentum from
doing it and so for me what I've learned
is I always make sure that I set goals
that I know that I can achieve okay
there are in that one year the
unrealistic ones ten year plus goals the
vision that it you know takes I don't
it's harder to wrap your head around
it's more for the excitement purpose but
the short-term goal is within a year I
know that I can hit an achieve so here's
a formula for you for setting goals
honest okay you want belief in does
okay belief in desire when it comes to
the desire for the goals that you set on
a scale from one to ten you at least
want it to be a level seven eight nine
or ten okay if it's less than a seven
like if you set a goal your desire for
it it's like a two they're probably not
going to do anything to achieve it
okay so that's not a good goal so you at
least want it to be a seven out of ten
on the desire now the belief side of
things
you also want that to be a seven out of
ten or more and so seven eight nine or
ten with the belief so here's the thing
you could set a goal that you have a 10
and a 10 desire for like I want to make
a million bucks and maybe your desire
for that is a 10 you're excited you want
that you're motivated for it but if your
belief for that is a 2 then that's a
conflict you're not likely to to
actually take action to achieve it so my
sweet spot is setting goals where my
desire is at least a 7 and my belief is
at least a 7 okay so I know that I can
achieve it 7 out of 10 there's there's
may be some doubts but but really I know
that I can if I work hard enough for it
if I commit myself I know that I can
achieve that goal and I wanted enough to
put in the effort and everything for it
so maybe for you you know it's finding
the goals that are in that sweet spot I
know for me starting an online business
for example my first goal was always
just to make a dollar right if I can do
that I was excited for that I wanted
that and I had the belief that yeah you
know what make an adult a dollar is not
that hard it might take some effort and
time and some months to do that but I
know that once I achieve that you'd open
up all these new opportunities for me my
next goal was to make a hundred bucks
and you know I had more belief and
desire for that when I hit that the next
goal is how can I make a hundred bucks a
month consistently and then that's how
can I make five hundred bucks and a
thousand bucks and I just always scaled
it up I always just up the ante and that
gave me confidence and momentum every
time that you set a goal and you achieve
it you get confidence from it and
there's nothing wrong also with
overachieving with your goals as well so
attainable and realistic I think is
important because the mistake that I
mean a lot of people make is they just
keep coming up short they lose all
confidence and belief and they build an
identity as a failure which is the
opposite of what you want you want to
make sure you set yourself up to win and
when you set
chiva goal you give yourself confidence
from that you get momentum and that
gives you confidence to pursue greater
goals as well so specific measurable
attainable realistic and the last one is
a tee a timeline you want to make sure
you have a timeline for your goal so you
have a deadline for when you're going to
achieve it by without a deadline it's
just a dream it's just something that's
in your head but it's not kind of creat
and it's not it's not real when you
actually schedule it it becomes real for
you so making sure you have a deadline
whatever goals that you're setting at
what day are you gonna have achieve that
goal by because also when you have that
deadline it gives you a sense of
accountability it forces you to follow
through because you've got a deadline
that you've got to make sure you've
achieved that goal by it's no different
when you go to school University the
teacher gives you a project a test
homework and there's a specific deadline
for that that deadline forces you to
follow through and take action to
achieve it because of that deadline
that's there if that no deadline you're
never gonna get around to doing it so
having a deadline is key so having SMART
goals is really important I also
recommend writing down your goals
language it in a way that excites you
and motivates you if you look at my
goals on my blog and everything I write
them down in a way that I will easily I
will easily make a million dollars by
December 31st and an example of why I
write it out that way is because it
empowers me when I say it I like goals
that I can speak out loud I can see it
as an affirmation I can read it out loud
and I like to condition it and ingrain
it in my psyche on a daily basis and by
using language like I will I will
presupposes that you're gonna do it
versus saying I want that that's kind of
wishy-washy in my opinion I like saying
I will or I have or acting as if or
assuming as if I already achieved it and
then using words like easily it just
makes it you know more enjoyable to
pursue sometimes I write I will easily
achieve X and enjoy the process so I try
to think about ways I can language it to
make it more compelling and more
exciting for me what matters it's no
right or wrong with this is what works
for you what excites and compels you
that when you speak it out loud and you
read it and you focus on it and
of eights you to go for it so writing
out your goals I think is really
valuable another thing also is
accountability having someone else that
you're accountable to beside yourself a
lot of people they set their resolutions
and goals but they never achieve them
because they don't have accountability
they're only accountable to themselves
and someone they set a goal they say
they're gonna do something and they
don't do it there's not much of a
consequence for that no one else knows
it's like only you know about it and you
kind of feel bad about yourself and you
self-esteem goes down and you beat
yourself up because you didn't achieve
your goal you didn't do it but when you
know that you can easily back out but if
you tell other people if you got a coach
if you got a community if you have
friends if you got a mastermind whatever
it is you tell them this is what I'm
committed to you're more likely to
follow through because now you're not
just letting yourself down you're
letting other people down and we often
care about whether people think of us
and so you're more likely to follow
through so that's what I did on project
life mastery in 2012 I I started this
blog on my YouTube channel to publicly
share my goals with the world and by
doing it it didn't matter what anyone
else thought but I knew by doing that it
forced me to follow through because I
didn't want to look like a failure I
guess I didn't want it I tell everyone
about it so that it would create more
pressure for me to take action on my
goals so you could do it online you
could do it with your friends you can do
it's your mastermind you can do with
your coach you can do it with somebody
anyone but having that accountability I
think is such a beneficial and important
thing I think another important piece to
that I want to give you is making sure
that you have a process for regularly
checking in on your goals I often do it
on a weekly basis but maybe it's a
bi-weekly basis a monthly basis or a
quarterly basis but having a regular
check-in is important because when you
check in on your goals maybe you've been
working on it for two months when you
check in on it you can actually assess
and evaluate what you did and you can
ask yourself am i following through or
not I mean am I still on track with this
you know what else do I need to do maybe
I got to adjust my plan but it forces
you to course adjust to make sure you
get back on track with it a great
program I learned this from it's called
a hundred a challenge by Gary Ryan Blair
and it's a goal-setting program I've
been through it multiple times
I'll link to it if you want to check it
out but it's great because it teaches
you something auld an after-action
review where you you you have to check
in on a weekly bi-weekly basis and
really evaluate the progress or lack
thereof you've been making and that's
such an important part of the process
otherwise you're gonna fall into the
habit of setting these goals and
resolutions committing to it and then
you're it's going to go by and you
didn't do anything and at that point
you're going to be like why even bother
set these goals and resolutions because
you never had a system for success in
the first place you really got to make
sure that you set that up the best way
that you can
another thing that to be aware of too is
with goals be mindful of how many goals
you want to set for me I set a lot of
goals every year and I set goals for
each area in my life and I think that's
important for me there is in my life
that are the most important are my
spiritual life my health my
relationships my emotions and yes my
business and money and success is also
important and a lot of people need to
set goals for that but for me I want to
make sure I prioritize all areas of my
life because that that for me is life
mastery that's what I want to strive
towards
so I set goals for each area but you
also have to be mindful of how many
goals that you can handle I think a lot
of people they set too many goals
without the track record of achieving
them and if you struggle with that like
if you struggle just achieving five
goals then there's no point in setting
that mini you know maybe you gotta set
two goals and get in the habit of just
doing that and achieving that before
you're ready for more or maybe you can
do more than five or ten goals whatever
that is for you I think you got to find
that amount that's manageable for you
that doesn't overwhelm you and stress
you out too much that you know is
achievable but also stretches you a
little bit - you want your goals to
stretch you to challenge you but also
not be too unattainable and unrealistic
and for me there's been times where I
over set too many goals and it could be
a little bit too much now I build myself
up to do a lot more than maybe an
average person can but I didn't start
that way I started just having a few
goals and then once I achieve those
every year I was able to expand and do a
little bit more and so for me that's
something that I built up to over a
period of time
so deciding how many goals you want to
set but I would encourage you at least
have one goal for each area of your life
each area that's important for you so
that way you can still have a balance
and progress in the different parts of
your life the other thing that I want to
share with you the last piece is having
some flexibility you know for me when I
first started goal-setting what I needed
to do at that stage in my life I had a
hard time following through I struggled
with it guys I really was a dabbler and
I'd set these goals and I never did them
and for me what I had to work on is
setting goals and having integrity to do
whatever it takes to do them too no
matter what I'm gonna do it if I don't
feel like it I can't change my mind
because I had the habit of just like
sitting goals changing my mind and then
jumping from one goal to the next to the
next and sure enough you never achieve
anything so I had to be very rigid with
myself had to be very disciplined I did
not allow myself to waver from my goals
and my commitments it forced me to be
more careful about what I commit to you
because when I commit to it I'm gonna do
it so for me that's something I did
originally but then I realized there's
some limitations with that later on what
I've learned is that having flexibility
is valuable there's sometimes other
opportunities come up and if you're too
rigid and you don't allow yourself to be
flexible and reprioritize or adapt then
you can miss out on those great
opportunities so for me now like an
example is this year this year you know
I had all my goals laid out and some of
them a lot of them I had to change
because better opportunities came up and
I had to reevaluate a simple example was
had an opportunity to partner up with
Tony Robbins my mentor once in a
lifetime opportunity and I had a
opportunity to go to Fiji and go to his
resort and spend time with them and
mastermind with tony and russell brunson
and all these incredible people that I
look up to that was not one of my goals
I didn't discover that opportunity to
like February of the year so for me I
had to really look at my goals and be
willing to change them to be willing to
say you know what this is a better
opportunity but if I'm gonna pursue this
it means I'm gonna have to say no to
some other opportunities and other goals
that I've already set for myself so that
flexibility was important because by
pursuing that goal it changed my life
more than many other goals that I had
set for that year I ended up going
and spending time with Tony one of my
goals was to go to Europe as well but I
had to change that because now here I'm
in Fiji I might as well go to New
Zealand I might as well Kota Thailand
and Singapore and spent some time in
that part of the world so I had to
change up my travel because of the new
opportunity that came from that so for
me like early on in my journey I the
flexibility would just lead to dabbling
so I had to be more rigid but now today
I don't have that same issue and I can
be more flexible and adapt with my goals
every year so I think you got to
determine where you are with that but
maybe you might have to be a bit more
rigid to get yourself to follow through
or maybe you're in a position where
that's not a challenge for you like it
was for me and you can be more flexible
with your goals after you know
throughout a year for example so it's
good to know where you're at with that
but overall guys that's a lot that I
want to share with you I think the most
important thing is just set goals set
goals do the best you can for it check
in on them on a regular basis you might
not achieve every goal but understand
the purpose of goals is what it makes of
you who you become along the way along
the journey is really what counts the
most
for me it doesn't matter how much I've
made and all the material external
things that I've been able to achieve
all of that has just forced me to grow
and become a better more successful
human being more confident human being a
leader a giver all of these character
character traits that you cultivate and
develop along the journey is really what
matters the most so even though yes you
will fail you will come up short on some
goals but that's okay learn from it grow
from it set some new goals don't let
that hold you back from setting your
goals in the future and keep striving to
make progress in your life I think that
is such a valuable thing so I want to
wish you a new year hopefully you
benefited from this I'd love to hear
some of the goals that you're going to
set for the year I haven't decided yet
whether or not no publicly share mine or
not for the new year I've done my goals
reports in the past but they don't tend
to get the most views out of everything
else that I do so I'm not sure how much
of an interest there is in it I know
there's a tribe of people that do enjoy
it and do benefit from it but I might
just take a year off from it and maybe
revisit it in the next year but I don't
know I'll think about a little bit more
but I'd love to hear some of your goal
and what you're gonna focus on for the
new year or if you have any tips or
things that have helped you then be sure
to comment below and share otherwise
thank you so much I look forward to
seeing you again soon god bless and take
care
you
