what's up YouTube this is Ryan Hildreth
and we're here in sunny Southern
California and today I kind of wanted to
go on a rant about if you should or
shouldn't go to college okay based off
my own experiences I'm going to give you
my honest opinion on the topic because I
feel it's important I mean it'll give
you a little background about where I
came from so I went to two community
colleges I transferred to a four year
University of San Jose State for
molecular bio ok I saw I wanted to
become a doctor because I thought that I
would make a lot of money being a doctor
okay quickly figured out that it's not
about the money especially for that
career it's about the passion helping
people okay then I came back I dropped
out of school came back home read some
business books got inspired and I said
you know what I want to own my own
business I'm going to go to Cal State
Fullerton for business finance quickly
learned that the education system is not
they don't teach you how to own a
business
they don't teach you sales marketing and
you know relationship building and lead
generation so I quickly learned that
they teach you how to be a good
corporate worker okay
of course there are some you know
professions that you need a degree for
you absolutely need a degree for if you
want to be a lawyer if you want to be a
scientist if you want to be a doctor if
you want to be an engineer those are all
things that you need degrees for okay so
that area but if you are someone who
wants to make a lot of money wants to
open their own business or is even
thinking about owning a side business
the public education system universities
are not geared toward teaching you
practical applicable information on
owning a business or entrepreneurship in
general even marketing collecting you
know I took a marketing class at Cal
State Fullerton and just the marketing
tactics that I'm utilizing right now
such as Facebook advertising as you may
have seen I'm running an Instagram story
advertisement this is all cutting edge
technology that's not taught in
universities are not up to date with the
technology so with that being said how
did I figure out that I shouldn't go to
college okay and maybe this is some of
you some of you are connecting with me
maybe you're working in you know
full-time job working paycheck to
paycheck paying rent paying for school
paying for books gas travel everything
right it's hard it's freaking hard and
it really wears you down and I knew that
I had to figure it out quick so what I
did was I had to ask myself okay why
should I go to college okay what is my
goal for college and my goal in life
after college was to get a great job
that I'm going to make tons of money
from I'm going to be able to you know
spend time traveling with family and
friends I'm going to be able to enjoy a
fast car write like this gt350 that I
just bought I'm going to be able to have
the freedom to do whatever I want and I
quickly realize that having a corporate
job a 9:00 to 9:00 to 5:00 you don't
have those freedoms okay you don't have
those types of freedoms setting your own
hours being able to make more money than
a set salary right unless you have a
commission based job of course you can
make a lot of money on a commission
based job as well but
that's besides the point I wanted to own
a business okay
and I know there's a lot of you out
there that are you know studying
business marketing business finance
Business Administration and you know out
of on nine I would say 99% of the
friends that I had that were studying
those things at the end of the day they
wanted to own their own business they
just didn't know where to start so they
wanted to work at a corporate job but
the funniest thing I learned is I could
go buy a twelve dollar book on Amazon
you know how to win friends and
influence people or Tony Shay's
delivering happiness or you know
practical books on investing like one up
on Wall Street I can learn how to build
a business from these books from you
know billionaire business owners and
investors that have written you know a
long book giving you all of their
experiences and knowledge for only you
know ten bucks on Amazon so what I
quickly learned is that school has a
very low return on investment okay I
have spent over thirty thousand dollars
in education and I've used zero of it
and what is my ROI on that education
zero so there's a negative ROI if you
want to be a business owner you want to
own a business you will learn nothing
practical in school I'm sorry it's just
that's just the way it is unfortunately
the education system is not up to date
because obviously or in the information
era things are transforming and rapidly
growing at a fast rate including
information and technology so that's
where the education system lacks I hope
that they fix it in the future but for
now my honest advice would be if you're
looking to own your own business become
an entrepreneur live a lifestyle of
freedom luxury travel whatever it may be
maybe you just want to help you know
retire your parents
I suggest that you know if you're coming
out of high school you're just
graduating I suggest you don't rush into
school that first semester
okay don't rush into school that first
semester I suggest you you actually
don't go to school for the first
semester and you pick up books right
this is maybe going to cost you fifty to
sixty dollars in total for a semester of
self education you're going to pick up
some books in each different subject
write law science medical business
finance right
geography Spanish whatever it may be
okay you're going to pick up books in
each one of those subjects and I want
you to read those books and see if they
actually interest you if that's
something you could see yourself doing
for the rest of your life because once I
start picking up books and actually
reading about you know certain topics
I'm like wow I I I kind of have a better
sense of direction of what I want to do
I would have saved myself thousands of
dollars saved my parents thousands of
dollars if I would have just picked up a
couple career books and kind of figured
out where I wanted to go in life because
if I wanted to you know if I found out
earlier that I wanted to be an
entrepreneur then I could have just
saved my parents some money on school
and I plan on paying them back but I
could have saved them money and you know
been on my journey even quicker right so
that's what I suggest honestly just from
my own opinion you know I Who am I to
say you should or shouldn't go to
college I'm just giving you my honest
opinion based off my own experiences and
ask yourself what you want out of life
right if you want to travel do you want
free time do you wanna maybe you want
the security of the nine-to-five maybe
you want maybe you just you enjoy
working and for a corporate company and
you want to see them grow okay
if that's your choice if you want to be
a doctor or a lawyer that's fine you
need to go to school because you need a
degree but if you want to build
something for yourself you want to see
growth right for yourself and for your
own business you want to create jobs and
school is not for you college is not for
you I don't recommend going to college
if you want to be an entrepreneur I'm an
entrepreneur I dropped out of college
five months ago back in January and
within these five months I've made well
over six figures more money than I've
ever made my entire life I bought myself
a really nice car that I enjoy driving
on the weekends and I wouldn't have been
able to do that unless I took that leap
and said no I'm not going to college I'm
going to take this semester off and
fully apply everything that I learned
from what I've read right from YouTube
videos that I've watched from some of my
mentors applied everything I learned in
my internship even at the investment
bank and you know my job at the
investment bank I'm going to apply
everything I've learned and see where
that takes me
and if in a year it doesn't work out you
know you could always go back to college
but because I took that leap of faith
I'm here now and I'm spreading my
message on YouTube which is awesome
and I'm sure a lot of you are learning
so make sure to ask yourself why am I
going to school what is the end goal
right is it to become a doctor or is it
to become is it to make a lot of money
and have that financial freedom because
those are two separate things right
those are two separate end goals and
they have two separate paths if you want
to be a doctor you have to go to school
right you don't want a doctor
you know performing surgery on you who
doesn't have a degree from UC Berkeley
right it just it just doesn't make sense
I wouldn't want someone performing
surgery on me that doesn't even have a
community college degree but someone who
owns a business right a million dollar
business is there's a much different
path all right self education
continuously learning sales marketing
psychology right they don't teach you
that stuff in school they don't teach
you email marketing they don't teach you
Facebook advertisements they don't teach
you how to sell how to build rapport how
to have an abundance mindset how to make
a situation win-win they don't teach you
those things I learned all of those
things from books and mentors so I hope
that this channel helps you I hope that
this video actually helped you kind of
gain some insight and perspective maybe
you're in college maybe you're thinking
about going to college maybe you just
graduated high school but take it
seriously because education is very
expensive
public education experience and
expensive self education buying books
it's not very expensive if you're
someone that could discipline yourself
buy a few books and read them and learn
much more than you can in a semester of
college that I suggest you do that
because that's the path that I took
that's the path that many friends might
have took and now you know building
businesses that are making well over six
figures in under a year and it wasn't
possible unless I educated myself you
know through books and through mentors
and even through YouTube you know and
just I know this is a longer rant but
remember - I want to touch on the fact
that the education system as a business
right it's a business you go into class
and you're going to buy books right
you're going to buy the brand new
edition of the books without the teacher
even there's no rebuttal it's the
teacher the professor says you need this
book and if you don't have it you're
going to fail the class so you
automatically buy it you automatically
spend 200 bucks on a brand new book
they'd still be on it they there's their
salespeople okay but they don't teach
you how to be salespeople they just sell
you they just sell books on to you right
they don't give you you don't have a
choice in universities - if they have a
book that you know they need you to
follow the guidelines on this particular
book you have to buy that book all right
and also it's funny because they tell
you that it's really hard to get a job
out of college
bla bla bla now the bachelor's degree
the master's degree is the new bachelors
right who do you think they are right
who's saying those types of things
saying like oh it's harder to get a job
out of college you need a master's
degree now it's a never-ending cycle
they want you to go back and get another
degree so you spend 30 40 more thousand
dollars at the university to get a new
degree how do you think these you know
universities thrives they get more
students the students now have to get
more degrees they have to get more
qualifications you have to take more
classes right I was taking classes like
a business calculus or just these random
classes
that didn't have anything I would never
utilize in my life no business man or
woman would ever utilize business
calculus in their life because you know
what you have Excel spreadsheets you
have technology to do that for you and
right I would take these these classes
that didn't I don't even know why
they're making a stake that the classes
but after learning business and selling
and you know getting leads and doing
lead generation on my own I know why
they're doing this right why why they're
pushing those extra classes is to
generate more revenue for the university
so I hope that you take this with you
know take it with a grain of salt
obviously you know you need to write
down what's important to you in life why
why you're going to school what's the
end goal and then determine if school's
right for you and if it's to build a
business or become an entrepreneur I
would say that the better choice would
be educate yourself educate yourself
there's a much higher ROI school right
now is very overpriced it's over it's
over valued it's over valued and the
return you're going to get on the stuff
you learn is not applicable so you know
again take this with a grain of salt
this is just my honest opinion from my
own experiences in university and being
a college dropout and building a
six-figure business in under five months
