so I've gone through a couple of phases
the first phase I mean you want to hear
it all you want to know now yeah you can
tell us however you want to I was really
like my I didn't hire my first writer
until 2015
so I've been doing some university for
like seven eight years and then I I was
literally convinced that no one in the
world could write about swimming pools
the way that I could for some reason I I
and my girlfriend we were we had moved
here to Boulder and she was like that's
your delusional like people can write
you're not the only person in the world
who can write about this I'm saying I
don't know I had a friend who like ran
and network of like freelance writers I
asked her you know what I'm willing to
try this out you know I just want to see
if this would work for me and I she put
me in touch with this guy named Brian
and I was like okay Brian I'm just gonna
give you a title for an article that I
want written and that's it I just want
to see what you can do and it came back
and I was like oh you get people other
people can write about pools and hot
tubs okay and so like that's when we
started doing you know I started using a
sauna at that point in working with him
and starting you know doing that and we
worked together for a while on both
roasty and some university and then I
ended up hiring an editor-in-chief who
whose name's Michelle and she came on
board and she literally just runs from
University editorially she is like well
versed and SEO in fact all the stuff
that I just talked about with all the
recent updates she told me so she's like
got her finger on the pulse of SEO at
the SEO community I believe she used to
write for a search engine journal so
she's very well-versed in that and she's
full-time her and I kind of come up with
the schedule and but she's mostly in a
drafts and and she's actually developed
her own sort of editorial SEO format and
process that's what we do now so right
now the team is really me and her
producing content on some university
she's all words and I am all other
things whether it's like fixing the
website or updating the website or
building you know oh and we also have
graph
designer forgot to mention who does the
graphics first in university um and then
we have somebody who does customer
service so somebody who we get emails
all the time from people either they
bought our products or they just you
know they get my email and they have a
question about the pools we have
somebody that answers all those emails
so that's like the core team at some
university it's just like four of us and
then four brew cabin it's me and
Stephanie my girlfriend and had money
Labatt's me that's that's a team so
pretty lean very lean and that was on
purpose
because I did have at one point like
Michelle was the editor in chief and we
had three writers underneath her we had
a sales person we had you know customer
service graphic design I have a lawyer
countin none of these are full-time but
they just you know like people that are
part of the team I guess and then yeah
it'll not last year the year before I
you know we were spending a lot of money
and things were working but I was just
like it was like do we need all these
people to accomplish the exact same
thing could we do this with less and you
know talking with Michelle she's like
yeah we can okay let's do that let's
figure out a way to like you know not
thin things out but do the exact same
thing we were doing but with less people
and that was and that's why you know and
I and I love that because and it's
really hard to get here because you know
when I hired Michelle she wasn't
full-time she was you know she was just
you know she was just doing writing and
and I hired her to be the editor in
chief like that was what I went out for
and I developed this like a whole Google
sheet application form that you know I
ended up getting 27 applicants and she
was like leaps and bounds over everybody
I got on skype I was like here the job
that I you you nailed everything and
mostly what it was because I get asked
this question a lot like how did you
find Michelle because Michelle is a rock
star everybody I work with 100% rock
star and that's what I want on my team I
don't really you know I don't I don't
mind training somebody up to Rockstar
status but it makes it much harder I
think a lot of these people you can find
them they're out there and and I didn't
hire a full-time immediately she fill
out this application in the application
was send me three videos that you think
are funny because I want to know if I
think they're funny you know so sin
what you think is the best content ever
produced on the Internet
send me you know here's an article on
some University you know tell me what's
wrong with it
tell me what's you know here's a video
that I did what do you what would you do
differently kind of like open-ended
taste you know I'm just trying to find
out if we have the same taste because
other than that I mean I think
everything else could be teach grammar
could be teased SEO can be teased very
easily but if you don't have good taste
then anything I teach you like you may
not it's not gonna live up to my
standards right and so that was the idea
behind that it worked very well but like
cream rose to the top at of 27 people
like she I mean no one was even close to
what she had written and I was like oh
sold like that was you know and then
from there once she came on board and
once she you know it took her about
three to four months to sort of like get
the environment in the world of like
pools you know but like not everyone's
like born into it you know but once she
did I was like this is it okay I
understand how this works and and I and
my graphic designers been with me for
five or six years now and and like my
customer service wrap and I call our
customer service but because there was
the only thing I have her doing right
now I would love for her to do more
she's so incredibly intelligent but you
know she came from I had an original
person doing it and she had you know she
was training other VA s to do what she
did so she like had a whole career like
a new career that she was starting and
she's like I I'm gonna leave and I'm
like that sucks she was awesome yeah but
I was like hey do you have somebody that
you would recommend can you train them
up and and then she did I was like oh my
god it's like so great so like you know
and then I have Stephanie who lives with
me and I can work with so it's really
nice to just kind of have this like core
group we really don't talk that much
like we don't do weekly meetings we were
on slack here and their email mostly but
everyone's got their job and we have
processes all written down and like
everyone knows what they have to do and
we just kind of do it's a well-oiled
machine and you know and then I just
freak out and do everything and you
kind of like throw you know wrenches in
the gears every once in a while but you
know sometimes they're gonna be like hey
we're not gonna do that I'm like so yeah
that's that's kind of that's kind of the
team very good and did you have any
experience like hiring people before
well working in another come nothing
okay cool
very interesting like the path that you
took I mean there's all kinds of fun
affiliate marketing of course but yeah I
wanted to do something non-traditional
when it came to hiring because I was
like well what do i what am I really
looking for I'm just looking for
somebody I could talk to and hang out
with yeah that's kind of that was my
criteria
you know like somebody who thinks like
me and if I can find somebody who things
like me then
anything I can they can do anything
right yeah yeah and I think the
non-traditional approach probably like
got more interesting people and then
yeah it's like you're you're showing
them they you can teach them what what
you need ya to do buttons you just want
someone they don't like jive with your
personality yeah in vehicle yeah and if
they do they probably our self taught
and self starters and that's good and
that's exactly what you know that's
exactly what we're looking for
