hey what's going on welcome to the Doug
show and in this episode we're gonna
talk to Marty McLeod again Marty and I
talked about secondary keywords and why
you want to do this in a strategic way
now if you're unfamiliar with Marty you
should definitely check out his success
story interviews and he's actually
written a couple blog post for me over a
niche site project we'll put links all
that the videos the other interviews
that I've done with them and that sort
of thing so you can check out what Marty
is all about and if you're new to the
channel do check out some of the other
videos feel like what you see please do
subscribe and don't forget to check out
an insight project if you want to you
know get some of the templates I use and
that sort of thing so let's hear from
Marty now hey what's going on Doug
Huntington here and I'm sitting with
Marty McLeod again how are you I'm good
so you've been on a few episodes quite a
and for the people that don't know you
can you give just a quick little short
intro yes
so I've been working on my affiliate
site started with one as I was a student
of the cunning tons a five-figure nature
site course I believe it was back in mid
2017 if I was taking and I dismiss
telework ranking along I was not saying
I'm announcing a pretty good amount of
success cool and a very modest and a
helpful dude Marty is so he's making
about 3k per month we can we can mention
that and he's been doing it pretty
consistently here so the last three
months or so congratulations on that
Thanks and I haven't met you yet but I'm
hoping next time I get to Atlanta we
could do a little Meetup so we really
like I haven't been back in like a
couple years or so and it was super busy
before but you're in the Atlanta area
just right how long have you been out
there I think since 2005 I used to live
in Norcross before I moved over to
you're close to where I am now which is
now ready Rhea just outside of Atlanta
okay we're in Waring Norcross if you
could mention because I used to live
yeah down in the zone and I was in
Norcross all the time okay I was
actually I originally I was off
somewhere out of singleton Road not too
far from Jim Carter Boulevard and then
went to Toulouse and then ended up over
in Rosalind announcer oh man we were
probably sitting in traffic at the same
time it is called the same spot so I did
you know closer to like the office
exactly kind of had to because it's just
I hate commuting hate hassle oh yeah
yeah it was a nightmare like back back
when I guess it was co-opting but I was
living at home because I was in college
but I was driving from Lawrenceville to
Alpharetta if you can imagine right
that's not like no good way it's like
two-lane roads or like you know yeah the
connector sure people are like guys we
don't care about the traffic so the
point of today is we're gonna talk about
secondary keywords and Marty can you
sort of like introduce the topic for
folks that are unfamiliar with secondary
keywords yeah so when you decide to
write a post for your affiliates all
right
you're typically what you do is you find
a keyword or it's been sometimes you
call it a primary keyword or focus
keyword or the basically just means the
main keyword you're targeting to write a
post for people searching for hopefully
land on your page proposed secondary are
the additional keywords that post can
rank for and the idea here is that we
purposely think about that ahead of time
when we're creating the post rather than
just getting a conditional keywords that
we rate for completely by accident we
actually say from the beginning
hey why don't I try to optimize or or
this make the use of more keywords in
this post why I'm writing this no cool
and yeah I was gonna say like kind of
what happens like if you just find a
keyword you write the post like you'll
potentially let's say things work out
your rank for the keyword that you're
intending to rank for but you also rank
for you know several dozens maybe
hundreds or even thousands of other
secondary keywords that you're not not
intending on ranking for so you're
suggesting Marty that if you think about
it ahead of time and you know these
other related keywords go ahead and put
them in there go ahead and optimize for
the
exactly got it and do you I guess do you
have any specific examples or can you
share any sort of like I don't know like
a case study that you have observed on
your own site yeah let's see what I
won't use the actual product names
because I to me that on a secret I well
listen well we just use that example
hairdryers so let's say I have a what
are the best hair dryers under $50 as a
post the focus keyword primary keyword I
can find some other keywords that are
very irrelevant that I can create
content for and hopefully rank for and
it'll be stuff what you typically find
stuff like how does a hair dryer work
can I can you take your hair dryer with
you
it sounds like dumb stuff but there's a
lot of people searching just for basics
things you know how many wasps does a
hair dryer use all that stuff is stuff
that you can add to add value to the
post that you can potentially ring for
as well as actually add real stuff that
people actually want to read and nests
instead of having to have a super thin
post where all you have is some products
that you get to your part reviews and
pros and cons and that's it you know but
you it yeah there's some good reasons
why you should do that and when you do
that and you actually try to do a good
job of writing the content it looks like
you really mean well and people
appreciate it jump and they also tend to
spend more time with page did not okay
and is it safe to assume like if you put
in say like the root key word like hair
dryer the secondary keywords will always
have a smaller search volume yeah they
just must have almost always yeah yeah
okay yeah and is there any sort of guide
on like what search volumes are
worthwhile or not worthwhile or anything
like that you know I have not really
well I do if you're gonna have some and
they seem very similar and you have it
your your list of potential keywords
some at the bottom in terms of volume
some at the top I did try to take the
ones with a highest volume first I don't
make that I don't make that primary
criteria I make what's useful in most
relevant
usually my first criteria you know okay
so and how do you sort through such a
list let's say you have several hundred
keywords like what do you do with them
yeah I think about why I look I go I
just quickly and it's actually doesn't
take very long I go through there in my
my spreadsheet and I highlight the cells
where I'll find something that's
relevant it would make sense to write
about and that people would say okay
this is this this fits in this topic I
don't force I'm not stuffing in keywords
you don't do it and even if it's
something that's worded in a weird way
like some keywords will have bad English
are so the syntax is weird
I'll keep it I'll fix it as I go up the
depth inside I still make a note of that
but mainly just does this make sense to
use in here and if answer this question
will it be helpful and I you I just I
just go through go down the whole list I
find a bunch of them and write and I
start writing I go through and pick them
out individually so you might be four or
five that ultimately end up using maybe
six in some cases you know okay and how
do you actually like put them into your
article you know I dropped them I take a
copy them from spreadsheet and drop them
into the editor and I put them there and
I start my content writing process and
when I get to content section where it
makes sense to flow into that topic I'll
put it in there if I need to clean up
the actual keyword phrasing and usually
I tend to use those those those
secondary keywords and h2 subtitles
exactly and I just kind of do that as I
go okay cool so by putting in the like
as a subheading you're sort of
indicating that like hey this is kind of
an important section like this section
is about that topic
you know exactly got it okay cool how do
you determine whether or not you should
put the secondary keyword in the post or
like make a second article it tends to
be that if a lot of is just using your
best judgment it's tends to be like some
things you'd be really pushing it to try
to write out post about some things are
that really really had really tied short
answers
but I can I can write one to two
paragraphs about those and that's okay
that's well then another post but they
wouldn't really fit it would make sense
to use them in their own post let's use
it how I I do it you know okay cool cool
that totally makes sense so if maybe
someone finds a keyword and they were
thinking oh I'm gonna write a whole post
about it and then when they look into it
they realize there's not enough
information maybe they could pull it
into the parent post exactly okay very
good very good
and let's see as far as like I guess how
many times you use the secondary keyword
are you so you have a subheading are you
also putting like that full text into
the article like in the body of the
paragraph yeah I'd try to do that as
much as possible some cases I have to
tweak it a little bit so that it doesn't
look like it's unnatural in English you
don't want to do that I see some sites
out there doing that and they're easily
poor quality sites make they try to
force it in tipping an exact match of
what in the original keyword search
keyword term is I don't do that I tweak
it a little bit to correct English
sometimes you can phrase it as a
question as in like someone was asking
well you know what who uses hairdryers
you know I I write it as as if someone
was asking himself and then I answer
that you know I'd think about which way
that looks best if I was reading if I
was reading it as a stranger what what
way looks best to me you know cool so
you're using like some copywriting ideas
where like you know when someone's going
through it you want to like have them
identify as like the person or something
like that is they're reading it like oh
yeah I am wondering who uses a hairdryer
I am because I don't use a hairdryer I
don't need to you know it's one of the
huge advantages I have I save all this
time during the day how long does it
take you to dry your hair for example oh
not that long but why he'd love let's
people love hairdryer I know they have
the server good
yeah yeah no I mean I could oh wait like
no matter the topic I could somehow talk
about myself so even if I'm making fun
of my bald man so alright cool now there
is such a thing called LSI keywords are
you familiar with those Marty latent
semantic indexing your weeds yeah a
little bit can you can you talk about
them a little bit do you much much not
terribly well versed but my
understanding is that means that Google
can interpret something the maintenance
intent and meaning of something even if
that's not identical to the way
something else is phrased like they may
be similar in meaning but not
necessarily written the same it couldn't
correct me if I if I'm making here no
you know what I didn't even look I'm
totally unprepared so I I didn't look it
up I know it's the thing I know what it
stands for and well whatever you said is
useful people could look this up but I
was gonna say there are tools that can
help you do it there are many many tools
out there and you mentioned earlier like
maybe it was even before we were
recording page optimizer pro pop people
refer to it Kyle roof you know is the
creator of that so for the secondary
keyword stuff page optimizer pro is
probably pretty helpful right yeah yeah
this I I know that there's some other
tools too that I can't remember the
names of them I you know one thing you
can do actually though is just just
manually put in a Google and see how it
treats it and you'll see what it thinks
is the saint has the same relevance
meaning and then you can see other ideas
too indeed yep and I think some of the
power in like page optimizer pro is like
it will tell you like other keywords
that you potentially could put into the
article that will help it rank for more
keywords in general potentially even
boost like the relevancy for the terms
that's already ranking for and like just
nailing the on-page like that's the
whole idea with page optimizer pro and
this is you know
a like the process that we described
that you described here Marty is sort of
like the manual way to do it with like a
list of keywords and you have some
knowledge about like if it's useful you
have some understanding obviously on the
keyword competition and just what people
are looking for but like page optimizer
pro can sort of like break it down and
tell you like use this keyword you know
X number of times or use similar keyword
stuff like that so but yeah in general
if people are like really curious this
gets deep into the weeds by the way by
the way this is why I really talk about
LSI because it's going down to a level
where you're like looking at the
statistics you're finding like different
ways to rephrase the content and for
most people like they're just struggling
to get content published like find a
writer and like get it published
so I usually don't go into the depth of
like what we're getting into now so plus
I don't even know what LS is so all
right you like how I did that I was like
you know LSI's and a quiz you made you
say let's write know what it was it's
right keep me on my toes yeah absolutely
no we know what we're talking about guys
guys girls so okay cool so from like we
went through generally like the most of
the process so you have bunch of
keywords like any other tips as far as
like selecting them or implementing this
in a way that is natural without keyword
stuffing yeah I just would say that
don't pick them on the basis of what you
want put in there could pick it on the
basis of what is both useful and makes
sense to put in there and if Splinter's
reading it they would say okay this is
cool now I learn about this when I read
this okay it's natural your intent your
reason for putting in there is natural
and it appears natural and also again
you're not gonna shoot on a keyword in
exactly as it is because a lot of them
if for some crazy reason they had their
misspelled or the English Graham
is wrong or something crazy just fixed
that because usually a lot of times
Google can interpret the correct meaning
even if it's not spelled exactly the
right layer the phrasing well the
original phrase moves off and you
correct it to look correct in English
it's okay you know don't know what that
yep I was gonna say actually people ask
that all the time have found a great key
word but it's misspelled and the grammar
is wrong like should I you know for the
answer's no like just go for the right
term like you didn't find anything
special Google knows how to say yes
Google can figure out like that you
actually made something else so they
will give you those results spelled
correctly they're trying to help us oh
cool well everyone check out this
specific post I'll put a link in the
description
it goes through like the step by step
process that Marty explained like
verbally here and you could actually
like see some screenshots and some other
details and already provides very
helpful so thanks a lot Marty appreciate
your time as always my pleasure thanks
to Marty I really appreciate you taking
the time to chat with me and writing the
blog post by the way if you want to look
a little bit more into secondary
keywords check out the blog post
sometimes it's easier to read and see
what we're talking about versus just
listening to us talk so thanks for
checking it out and we will catch you on
the next show
