How To Grow With 0 Views And 0 Subscribers Fast

hey everyone this is Stefan James from
projectlifemastery.com and right now I'm
sitting down with my friend Dan Locke
who is a celebrity entrepreneur very
successful youtuber with over a million
subscribers and today we're going to
share with you guys how to grow your
YouTube channel from zero views and zero
subscribers from scratch so Dan you
might share with people how you started
on YouTube and just the beginning
process from when you had zero views
zero subscribers we've all been there
not in there before - how you know share
a little bit about the journey you went
to getting your first thousand
subscribers and so forth I remember I
uploaded my first video in November 2015
right above that video and I would wait
it's anybody watching yeah my my video
and I would click refresh to see if I
can't pump up the views a bit right and
it was very difficult yes in the
beginning because I didn't have any
strategies I didn't know what I was
doing I was just posting different
things and and there wasn't a like a
blueprint I could follow right so at
first I was actually getting just
telling people about all the friends hey
man I I have a youtube channel can you
subscribe and it's there like give me
like a like a mercy subscription I got
fine I'll subscribe stop bugging you
right yeah and that's how I got started
with the first like dozen subscribers
and in the beginning it feels kind of
lonely it exists yup lower your content
it's like anybody watching this stuff
and then you have like a few views yes
and then maybe you know of 100 years and
200 views in and then finally you get
one like like yeah right and and no
comments though no one comments anything
no one cares to comment so it was it was
a little bit difficult but I think in
the beginning first of all what I don't
suggest you never do you ever ever do is
to like buy these subscribers and the
bodies reviews like we use and stuff
like that yeah that's a big no-no you
just don't do that first of all you
underestimate how YouTube how smart
YouTube is no I think we should just
recently YouTube did a Bay clean up yeah
huge cleaner well there's a lot of these
kind of spammy channels where people are
doing that and think also they
because a lot of people that do is they
would pirate people's content and put it
out there and then they'd boost their
subscribers and authority but then
YouTube kind of caught on to some of
those things so it's just best to avoid
any of that just you think do you think
it's the right way in alignment with
YouTube I think first of all before we
talk about a strategy yeah we need you
to think about you need to understand
how YouTube thinks yes and how YouTube
works so YouTube as a business how do
they make money they make money by
having advertisers advertise on their
channel so if you think about that's how
YouTube works that's the business model
what does that mean in terms of as a
content creator it means that okay the
more content we have on YouTube the high
quality of those content the better and
I don't mean like quite in terms of
production value I mean in terms of
people liking the contest so YouTube's
purpose is to keep the users on YouTube
for as long as possible yes and watch as
many videos as possible because the
longer you stay on YouTube the more
videos you watch the more opportunities
they have running those ads in front of
you yes now if you understand that's how
YouTube things then what's important for
YouTube is it those fake views
absolutely not because that doesn't
bring in dollars is it just videos
that's not yet because someone can watch
a video one deal but if they leave in 30
seconds that doesn't help to bring in
more advertising dollars you notice even
now YouTube before a longer video they
might just have like one pre-roll which
is the beginning of the video they have
like an ad you know those ads you what
you click on to want to watch the video
you want to watch suddenly it's some ad
running and you can click skip ad that's
a pre-roll ad right now you notice they
have more at in-between middle yeah mid
roll right there like throughout the
video you see different ads in between
so if you just purpose to keep the user
keep you on YouTube as long as possible
then what do they look for what do they
want in terms of content creator how did
they measure how good a content is watch
time yep yeah watch time is king and
happy you said that so I I have a
YouTube rep at a certain point with
YouTube they give you a rep I think
gets maybe over a hundred thousand if
someone that basic is dedicated to
working with you to help you grow your
channel and I asked her I said you know
what is the most important factor on
YouTube is it two views is the comment
is it a thumbs up and she said the most
important thing is watch time watch time
right exactly as you said not all views
are equal because some of the views are
just maybe 10-second views but if you
get somebody watching and that's why by
the way I like a lot of longer form
content because I knew it was on my most
popular video is about an hour long and
it's got over 4 million views because
anybody that's watching because the
content was obviously good for people to
watch that long and that triggers
YouTube they're out algorithm to promote
the video on the home page recommending
it next to other videos ranking for
certain keywords and that's when you
really grow that's when you really grow
I want to go back a little bit when I so
I had a similar process I think
everybody does because I want you guys
to understand at the beginning it is
slow with YouTube it is lonely I kind of
felt that I was just putting out videos
nobody was watching it unless you know
my friends and family but it was only
because they're kind of curious to see
what I was up to and I think that's
where a lot of people they give up they
get discouraged because they're in the
mindset of I put in X amount of time I
should get back X results that's that's
that's the empowerment element of the
entrepreneur mentality is every video
you create every piece of content is an
investment yes and I a seed where you
you might not see that seed sprout right
away but it can take time but once it
does that's now an asset that can bring
in more views more subscribers and more
revenue for you so that mindset when you
guys are first starting on YouTube even
though it feels a little bit
discouraging you know you're putting up
videos you're putting time on this you
got to keep going with it you know I
call it the mastery mentality versus the
dabbler mentality the dabbler does it
for a little bit they don't see results
they move on to the next thing the
master understands the patience in that
and I think having a good strategy
around that as well is very important
which yes which we'll discuss yes and I
think for me I actually like the bear of
entry yes because one is so easy the the
bear inches low it means
he can come anybody can compete with you
and go in right versus if yes it takes a
little bit of effort that it takes I'll
tell you that when I was I think growing
to you over when I hit a hundred
thousand subscribers that's when I
realized okay I didn't take this I'm
gonna take this very very seriously and
I look around where in in terms of the
entrepreneurship business space they're
only like handful of channels with over
like even at a time less than 1 million
subscribers like we're talking a few
hundred thousand subscribers less than
like a handful of them and it was like
okay if I can hit a hundred thousand if
I dedicate myself to this I could be
hitting half a minute subscribers maybe
even a minute subscribers and I know by
the time I hit 1 million subscribers I
would dominate yeah yeah cuz it just
gets easier and easier the more
subscribers you get at the beginning it
is tough but once you get I'd say your
first thousand to ten thousand it just
because now every video you put out
you're getting a guaranteed amount of
views just and watch time and that helps
all of those new pieces of content blow
up even further so if you're starting
from scratch zero subscribers zero views
what you need to do so and let us give
you some some tips some strategy look
the first thing though I think before so
I look at the 8020 before you look at
tactics or techniques yeah most
important thing is quality yes right so
don't think that you're gonna you know
Google note so YouTube knows whether or
not your videos are quality and so I
think that's the most important thing is
ensuring your videos are quality videos
that actually add value to people that
solve a problem I think the big mistake
that people make is they think hey I've
got this great idea I want to share this
it's more about me rather than belong
you the audience and what they want and
that's the worst way of doing it I think
a lot of people they start hey I'm gonna
I'm gonna do a vlog but nobody knows
about you or cares about to watch your
vlog you got it take yourself out of
your shoes and figure out what do people
want what are they searching for and
then create content based on that but
ensure that it's quality because I found
that when you focus on quality you don't
really need the tactics or techniques
because
when people love your content they'll
naturally subscribe they'll naturally
like it share it link to it you know
they'll tell their friends about it and
everything so I always look at that's
always the foundation that well of 1/2
of how fair it is yes yeah it's no it
doesn't matter your age it doesn't
matter your background
it doesn't matter you know I speak with
an accent it doesn't matter the only
vote that counts is your viewer yeah
well it's very very fair said if you
like you said put out quality content
and I don't mean quality in terms of
production quality like doesn't mean you
need to spend $10,000 on a camera or
anything like that you can do from once
but small video of vlogging video a
selfie that doesn't matter in terms of
people liking content YouTube will we
warn you for it again YouTube wants
advertisers and YouTube wants the user
the viewer to stay on YouTube as long as
possible so any Content it connects with
people they people like to come back
watching again and again YouTube is like
this is good and it's how funny that
works that when you create quality
content YouTube is like great a lot of
people watching this video let's have
more people watching this video is
exactly how this works yeah you get
rewarded for having it out watch what I
love so if you're someone that's just
focused on you you're just trying to
cheat the system you're not gonna get
rewarded you're not gonna you only get
rewarded if you're actually producing
quality that adds value to other people
yeah and you're not the one that's
determining that your viewers are
determining that and YouTube and I've
had videos I'm sure you as well where I
think hey you know what this is gonna do
great
and it doesn't and then other videos
blows me away I didn't think you'd do as
well and it blows up and gets a million
million views and so it's really
understanding what they want and what
people are responding to and it's such a
fair game even when I had little
subscribers I was advertising I wanted
to grow the subscribers right I was
running ads on YouTube right one wanting
to grow more subscribers I thought okay
I've got some money let's let's run some
some some ads on YouTube to get you to
subscribe to my channel I make that
grill didn't work at all yeah zero it
bombed completely a bomb completely and
why do you think that is I think for
YouTube it's like
maybe it's the algorithm is the way set
up but it's how fair it is the e
subscriber need to be earned
yeah it's each subscriber needs to be
earned so I grew from that like the zero
to a million really it's zero
advertising dollars can feel my thing
like Danny Kaye so you've got money you
can spend money on we didn't spend money
yeah it's one at a time one connection
at a time how do you define I'm curious
the quality of your video like what do
you look at is the information that
you're providing for people you look at
it as you know whether it's entertaining
for people like howdy how do you look
what do you look at that will determine
what's a great quality video I myself is
two things number one of course watch
time how many people watching that video
they use right it's it the velocity of
that video how velocity meaning when you
release a video how within that 24 48
hours 36 hours how fast is getting views
right but myself personally I actually I
read all the comments so it's my very
first tip for you if you have 0
subscribers 0 views do not look at your
subscriber as like a number no it's a
very horrible thing to do look at each
subscriber and they are it's a person
yeah it's a certain it's a person
sitting there investing their time
watching your content so if you are
growing you see a comment we apply yeah
in the beginning see if there are if did
give them a heart give them a heart like
a heart and I'll give them a comment you
need to interact with your viewers your
fans because think about it they are
choosing to watch your video instead of
watching Netflix yeah you're competing
with everything else but yet they choose
to watch your video so if you think of
it that way each person when you develop
the relationship even when an even now
to this day I will look through the
comment I were hard I see certain ones
we would come in even I have a million
subscribers but I look at what people
like yes what what do people want
they're asking more questions about
certain topic and then I would just say
I would just answer it so you got to
treat each fin like a person not like a
number yeah I think that's very very
critical especially when you're starting
from scratch because they are the ones
who would help you hey
know what I'm watching this channel you
should check it out they're the ones who
would tell their friends about your
channel yes one at a time is here's the
way I think I want every video to people
to leave watching that video feeling
something like inspired motivated
entertain yes like laughter cry because
I found that when you elicit those
emotions its powerful you're building
that bond in that connection device I
want them not only just to feel that but
even to make new decisions in their life
to maybe make a change in their lives to
take more action in their life because I
know that if I can get someone even a
little shift in an insight a belief
change or get them to take some sort of
action in their life then they credit
that to the video and nice to write and
they come back and it builds goodwill
and Trust and so that's always my goal
and I I tried to I don't have much
expectation when I create a video I just
think I'm just sharing to a friend you
know this other person is a friend just
like a person as you said and I'm not
you know I'm just gonna connect with
them and share something that I found
valuable or something I believe could
help them around a certain topic I'm
creating a video on and I think with
that mentality of because I think a lot
of people they look at things the wrong
way to of just how can I get more views
and subscribers but that's all gonna be
the mindset is how can I make a
difference how can I make an impact how
can I help someone how can I solve their
problem how can I help them fulfill a
result in their life and I think that
mindset I always think about that versus
how can I get all these views or
whatever because you're not going to get
rewarded for that either I don't think
and and then partially why my channel
grew there are specific strategies but
from a Content one of you personally I
think because I'm saying things on
YouTube that are not being said or I am
challenging conventional wisdom and my
videos are very edgy as you know and
like I'm very blunt and direct talking
about challenging the the school system
or the education system I'd like to call
the miss education system right I'm
challenging a lot of the even
conventional business belief right what
people believe in their myths and that
shortcut provokes a lot of people but
also that resonates with along people
does
it's like you know what I think the
feeling I want to walk away with
sometimes it's like like sometimes Danny
just stan is so blunt but yeah damn is
right yeah like he's like spawn on it's
very difficult to argue when the truths
right and that's kind of my my signature
style I love that and that's that's not
that that but that's my style your style
may be totally different right so
whatever that is you will find that
audience and once you have that small
group of that's ten twenty thirty don't
view them as ten twenty thirty because
you're fans at the end it's made up of
those ten twenty thirty people you just
multiply by a lot bigger numbers yes but
it started with the 10s so how about
I'll share a strategy that people can
use Justin's on you as well so here's so
when you're first starting out you
really have to create videos based on
what people are searching for because
YouTube is a search engine it's the
second largest search engine in the
world people go there that type in
certain phrases or keywords yeah and
then they can find your video and what I
what I did when I started what I
recommend people do is do research on
YouTube to see what people are searching
for know what your niche the market is
I'd even suggest following subscribe to
other people that are in that nation
market to see what they're doing you can
talk about that but once you know what
those keywords are then create videos
around that okay so whatever how to lose
weight right or how to XYZ and there's
different keywords there's different
tools you can use for this this is well
like to buddy to buddy calm is a free
tool you can use to help you do research
and helps you track keywords and whatnot
but find out what those keywords are
there's longtail keywords and short tail
keywords short tails may be one two or
three words long tail is four or five
six even longer they're more specific
phrases that will usually have less
people searching for it but it's more
quality very targeted toward certain
people so when you're first starting out
what I recommend is identify what people
are searching for related to your niche
and market and start creating videos
around that and you've got to make sure
you optimize your videos for that
specific keyword so what you want to do
what I always do is whenever
Kord the video I rename the the raw file
name to have a keyword in it and then I
upload that to YouTube so I don't want
the file name of my video to be CD yeah
anything like that because YouTube they
look at the raw file name so I rename
the file name how to lose weight dot mp4
or whatever it is upload that then I
optimize the title to make sure the
title the video has a keyword in it and
then I always try to make sure that I
have the keyword at least three times in
the description and maybe other
variations of the keywords within the
video yes and within the video because
YouTube does have captions and they kind
of transcribe it so they know the
relevancy of the actual words that
you're using in the video and then also
the tags so the tags section you can add
a certain amount but I I used the
keyword there and different variations
of it and that's where something like to
buddy is helpful because it'll actually
suggest different tags for you and
another thing that I do is I like to
type in that keyword see the videos that
are showing up for it and I see okay
this person that person I take that
person's channel name and I put it in
the tag so that when someone's watching
their video my guys you know yeah they
might get suggested next to it as
something that's relevant and I think
that's a good way to get started with it
and to to you know get yourself known to
attract people and once you have a base
of subscribers then you can kind of go
away from the the the keyword strategy
and always having to do that because now
every video you put out will get views
your subscribers will get notified of it
and it becomes a lot easier to branch
off in different directions
I agree since again because in the
beginning no one knows who you are yet
yes so it needs to be keyword based once
you have a a subscriber base and you can
see depends on your you can see
analytics where people who view your
videos what percentage are subscribers
and what percentage are non subscribers
those are what I call code traffic
they're just searching on YouTube they
somehow stumble upon your video yes
right yeah and and be consistent okay
identify like I think a lot of people
they put out a video once in a while and
you're not going to grow that way you
have to decide is it one video a week
two three or more
but be consistent with that and
understand it is a process that you know
I kind of a way I always look at it is
I'm throwing against the wall now I
see what's gonna stay because you might
create 10 videos or 20 videos put them
all out there you'll find that some of
them might go and get a hundred views
other 0 some one might go and blow up to
get 10,000 views and you never know and
tell you you you throw a lot that's out
there around different keywords and then
once you have certain videos that really
bring in some subscribers for you now
you start to see what's working and you
attract an audience and they start
asking you questions you see what they
respond to you and now you can tailor
your content more towards their
subscribers 100% and I would say
definitely I want to talk about
consistency so instead of let's say
you're gonna create 30 videos you can
upload video every single day about 30
days and then you say forget about it
that's not how YouTube works again goes
back to the philosophy how does YouTube
thing us YouTube wants quality content
on a consistent basis and also once
viewers to stay on YouTube for as long
as possible and watch as much videos as
possible so you think about that again
use that philosophy follow that
philosophy consistency once you have
that schedule if you're gonna upload one
video a week then you do one video a
week but think long term long game don't
say you know I'm gonna try this for like
two months and then see what happens no
this is like planting the seed yeah you
don't go plan something and say the two
months there where the hell is my crop
no you're gonna plant it like I had at a
time a year ahead at the time now you
got to give it some time think about if
you plant a seed and you're like where's
my crop and then you pull the seed out
it's like hey this is this doesn't work
it's not like that so thin long game
think about you're gonna do this for
like one year two years imagine if I
give up in in six months yeah in one
year I would not have had a subscribers
half today
there's no buffer it takes time to have
this no more Fox that's affect so I
would say consistency stick to that
schedule and be very consistent commit
to what you are comfortable with if
you're not comfortable with like three
videos a week like Stefan I do a B a
daily video but let's say one video as I
said one video a week or even two
a week and you say you know what that's
what I'm gonna do I'm gonna upload every
Tuesday I'm gonna upload every every
Saturday so my tips I'll give you a
couple more tips track in terms of your
upload time when it's the best time to
upload now that depends on your niche
right some people it could be Tuesday it
could be Thursday it could be sad and it
depends on what what is that you do that
you're de nition choose observe because
you'll notice the day that you upload
also the time that you upload makes a
difference I noticed when we all go in
the morning we get more views we get
more subscribers versus doing it in an
evening or versus in the afternoon that
makes a difference I noticed in when we
do a certain days when we were uploading
these three videos a week that makes a
difference what days you upload we do
Monday Wednesday Friday there you go
right so if you test you see find out
what works for you so stick to that
consistent schedule and one more
important tip is this in the beginning
when you are growing yourself
subscribers you got to tell people to
subscribe yes I know this sounds so
simple yeah hey you make a video you buy
like don't assume if people like your
content they will subscribe no you gotta
tell them hey if you like my content
click on a click a link here click on
the click on the bear hit that Bell turn
on the notification you gotta tell them
you got to point it you can ask them to
do it hey leave a comment below give me
a thumbs up you got to do it
consistently I know it sounds so simple
but as simple as that you'll notice
you'll get more subscribers yes once you
get so big then you can do a lot less of
that yeah people would know that okay
I'm gonna subscribe because you've got a
social proof I do a lot less of that now
but still from time to time I need a win
mine hey if this is the first time
you're watching my video make sure you
hit the bell turn notification turned on
okay ask me a question
give me a thumbs up like that is a must
that call to action that will give you
much and that's also something that
YouTube does look at they they can
actually see how many when you look at
your YouTube analytics you see how many
subscribers you got from that one
specific video so obviously a video that
is a lot of people are subscribing to
your channel from that it's gonna get a
boost in you and it'll help boost it uh
the keyword ranking and
and all that sort of stuff that's right
another thing that's very powerful to is
live video uh and I I've been going live
a little bit more often I've got one
friend who's doing really well on
YouTube and he only does live right now
and he finds every single one that he
does it just gets more and more of a
boost so live videos great too when
you're first starting off yes - even
though it might seem weird cuz nobody's
watching you yet quite yet but just get
into the habit of it the habit of just
doing this every week and you know doing
some live videos as well that can also
give you a great boost that's right
yeah awesome so we shared with you guys
