hey everyone this is Stefan James from
projectlifemastery.com and right now I'm
sitting down with my good friend Dan
Locke who is a very successful internet
entrepreneur very successful youtuber
with over a million subscribers and we
previously did a video that's more in
depth on how to make money from YouTube
which I'll link to but today we want to
share with you guys how to stop trading
your time for money by using YouTube
because a lot of people out there they
have a job which they're trading their
time in order to earn a certain paycheck
or they have a business or they're doing
maybe sales and they're constantly
trading their time for money in that way
and YouTube is one of the most powerful
platforms that allows you to reach and
scale your business your impact and your
money to make as much money as you want
so Dan thank you so much for sitting
down with me do you mind them share with
people a little bit about how they can
use YouTube to shift out of that place
of always trading their time for money I
think the reason most people they're
trading hours for dollars during time
for money you got a thing back why that
is happening why most people choose that
as a path you think about in terms of
this in a school system right we are
taught to trade our time itself it's how
much do I get paid per hour right or
every two weeks or every month that
even as a kid you go talk to the parents
hey mom and dad I want to make some
money they will tell you you go get a
job Yeah right they're not telling you
hey I want you to go you know create a
business I want you to go create some
with zero income there's no residual
income 101 even in college or in school
or YouTube 101 so if you think about
because we've been conditioned since the
early age we believe that's how we make
money that's how money works right and
that's why oh yeah of course
hours with all of our four dollars that
makes sense but then when you get in the
business world that doesn't make so much
sense anymore because in the business
world no one cares
yeah about that you get paid up based
per your time because you could be
working on a product on a project for
two months three months one year two
years
that's an entrepreneur you get paid
based on results yes what kind of value
- you can create a marketplace what kind
of results you can deliver to them are
place because of that you think about
YouTube versus other channels YouTube is
the only place where you can create
certain content and for once you do the
work once and it could continuously work
for you I'll give you a perfect example
when I was doing a lot more speaking at
one part of my career I was even back
and I think when you saw me I was
traveling almost every couple weeks
flying to a different city right I would
go to this city I would speak there I'll
go to death different City right after a
while you I was lost
yeah where the time zone where I was my
mind Chikako where am I like all the all
the airports start to look the same all
the hotels start to look the same
so you think about and there are a lot
of people still make money that way
where they're traveling a lot is there
called a roll warrior right yeah on the
roll a lot or they do a lot of
face-to-face nothing wrong with that
nothing wrong with that but YouTube
allows you as a playful allows you to
you to build trust in the marketplace to
get exposure but it's a platform that
works for you 24 cents I look at it as
if if you're trading your time for money
you're always gonna be limited in how
much money you can do there's only so
many hours you have in the day there's
only 24 hours is equal but how is it
that people that are millionaires and
multimillionaires or billionaires the
only way they scale their income is by
leverage and you know if you're always
in that model trading your time for
money you're only going to be limited
but if you start to look at platforms
like YouTube which you can leverage and
you can spend an hour you could either
spend that hour at going to speak and
give a talk at a seminar or you could
spend an hour creating a YouTube video
and that YouTube video is up there
forever and can reach maybe thousands or
millions of people versus you just
trading that one hour you're only gonna
be able to reach a hundred people in the
room or a certain amount I'll give you a
perfect example just yesterday
right I got a Python message from a
organizer he's doing the event sometime
later this year and he wants me to speak
he was asking me hey Dan what was your
speaking fee
how would that work and is ready to
write a check for a pretty big check for
me to speak and I look at look at the
amount like yeah I could speak but it
would actually cost me more money to go
there because when you go there it's not
it's not just a one-hour speech right
you got a pack you got to be ready you
may be checked leg right if you go there
yeah it's a couple you lose a couple of
days back and forth right so I'm like no
it's okay no thank you yeah and I said I
know respectfully I decline and he was
oh he was a bit shocked
right and I'm like no it's not shocked I
mean I'll give you a perfect example
let's say actually me let me show
something Rico let me show the link um
this is an app that I have right which
is this is the YouTube one of the
creators app yeah none of you can see
this this numbers here now I'll show you
something really really cool you think
about in terms of speaking time or
expose your influence right now this is
in the last 28 days last 28 days you can
see this is 29 million yeah 29 million
minutes or what I can tell ya we're
watched in about 28 games that's a lot
about it oh yeah they think about
average movies like two hours to an hour
this is two hours 29 million minutes you
just think about that yeah can you do
that with speaking no I don't think so
can you do that with Direct Mail I don't
think so
right can you do with an ad with that
like like a preen I don't think so can
you even do that with a podcast perhaps
perhaps if you get a lot of downloads
but this is working this is because the
content I created yes one year ago and
these are videos that you spent the time
creating it what one okay and we'll talk
a little bit about the content creation
process but once and those videos
continuously get you views that's right
day after day month after month year
after year and that's how you really
leverage and scale and same thing and I
have millions of minutes wash too and
right now as we're doing this video
people are watching or
someone somewhere young winner some
we're essentially duplicating yourself
right you're duplicating there's like
you know yourself over and over and over
again and you're having an incredible
impact because of that so and you have
to understand the culture that way in
that when because of Amazon because of
Netflix we remember back then with TV
was it a TiVo
yeah right when people wanted to skip
infomercial they will record it
certainly shows and they will watch it
again we are at we are at this now this
digital age where that's not good enough
anymore people want something they want
it now they want to consume content when
they want it where they want it and
whatever device that they want it right
now people don't like to wait
everything's on demand I want to watch
that movie on Netflix I'm watching it I
want to binge watch this entire season
in one night I'm doing I'm waiting for
yeah you have to understand that's
how people think even Amazon right
before shipping is like yeah I can wait
two weeks two weeks are you kidding me I
want my stuff like two days is too long
yeah right because people now were
conditioned to think about that that's
how we view time
that's the instant gratification and
YouTube is the perfect content provider
for that because hey I can watch
whenever I want I can save it I can
watch it again
I can create a playlist for myself it's
a lot of this the these things that I
can control that can create my own
schedule so the way I view YouTube from
our perspective from a an entrepreneur
perspective from a market perspective
from a promoter perspective I don't look
at them as I make these videos no that's
not how the way I look at it I look at
each video it's like a virtual piece of
a virtual real estate a piece of real
estate that if I can have that video
right and I can show exactly this
particular video that video generated
you know $20,000 for me this video
generated $30,000 for me now if you
think about that to generate example
beginning of a name a video that you
created
that has brought him like a lot of
revenue is this anybody that came to
mind yeah it was actually me
interviewing Tatiana on how she built
her business on Amazon got millions of
views 4-minute over 4 million views in
that one video brought in seven figures
so seven Biggers now imagine this that
that's seven figure video one deal to
generate seven figure in cash flow yeah
in real state yeah how much money you
need to put down yeah to have a positive
cash flow seven figuring sense just
think about that yeah you need to buy a
pretty damn big piece of commercial real
estate with a lot of down payment
do you have seven figure pauses cash
flow coming in just think about that
tens of millions of dollars yeah but yet
how long how how much it costs you to
create that video is hardly anything you
can create as many as you want hundred
thousands of them yes that it's almost
like each video is you buying a new
property that brings in a positive cash
flow for you and the good thing is not
everybody not everybody can cream either
like not every video would would do that
well or some video would produce nothing
but to choose this it didn't cost you
anything that's right right it cost you
lived at a time even though it didn't
bring in revenue but it brought in
something else yes
goodwill yes maybe it builds your
audience maybe it's another piece of
content whatever it is and that's okay
that's no loose
yes right yes then I remember when I
first started my career I was dating and
life coach and I put on little seminars
here in Vancouver and it was such a
hassle to get because there is such a
barrier as you know from them they don't
know that's on the street to get people
out of their house to come to an event
you know there's barriers around that
but you know I'd have these small groups
that come up we'd have to promote and
market it every two weeks to get people
to show up and then at you know I'd give
them great content at the end of that I
would make a pitch for a boot camp
program that I had and sometimes some
days I'd put in that time and I'd get
zero sales zero zero but now I realize
the power of YouTube I can create all
these videos some of them do amazing
others do okay or not as good but
each of those videos can produce that
cash flow for me correct and I can have
as many as I want
and the my have videos right now and you
do as well that I published four years
ago yes they are consistently bringing
in income and that's again that's how
you scale and put aside like to forget
this seventh figure video or six-figure
video imagine if you have just one video
just one video that brings you an
additional hundred dollars a month just
hundred dollars a month right twelve
hundred dollars a year one thousand and
two hundred bucks its how would how
would that affect your life just one now
imagine if you have that one video and
now you say you know what if I have one
video whatever have two you can create
one you can create two and you've got
just maybe a dozen of these videos out
there we're now talking about like have
hundreds of thousand subscribers even
like a million subscribers we're talking
very small Channel couple of these
videos that are working for you yeah get
multiple multiple streams of income that
there is not a difficult thing to create
to make enough money to replace the
income that you have with your job which
you're trading hours for dollars yes
even maybe just to to supplement to help
yeah
right to create some additional income
in your spare time that's very very
powerful and all you need it's just and
you don't even even need fancy camera
equipment like this you can do selfie
video you can do webcam video you can do
whatever videos you want and the funny
thing is you can even just share the
different things that you like you like
the movies pokemon movies you like
shopping talk about shopping you like
makeup talk about makeup yeah right you
can talk about we like business so we
talk about business we talk about self
growth we talk about motivation yes we
can talk about whatever topics because
there's so many people out there there's
such a huge audience you will find some
people that relate to them and it's fun
to people don't realize this for me it's
the most fun part of my business I've
been involved and you have to do a many
different business models for me this is
not just the most fun it doesn't feel
like work it feels like I always say
it's a hobby that I get paid for and
it's something that I would do anyways
if I need no money from it because the
benefits I get but you're making an
impact you're making a difference
and you're able to make an impact in in
ways that you can never make just by you
alone going on the road I mean back in
the day a Tony Robbins would have to go
on the road 300 days a year
yeah but now you don't have to you don't
like that just doesn't make sense why
someone would do that when you can
leverage YouTube in this platform to put
out those videos have more of an impact
have fun and enjoy it and like you said
you don't need a lot of expensive
equipment just your iPhone the cameras
on that are way better than the cameras
they're getting better and better and I
said and that's why I'm such a big
believe in such a big proponent of it
because from a YouTube took me from a
successful entrepreneur to a global
brand it's very very simple from before
my students my customers majority of
them in certain countries me 2/3 and
then majority in North America to now I
have students in over now a hundred and
thirty countries I want you to think
about that a hundred and thirty
countries because of YouTube awesome so
I want to ask you a little bit about
your content creation process how are
you efficiently spending your time to
create videos so that you can have the
biggest reach yes now I on my channel
I'll be doing every single day and
believe me I'm not creating a video
every single day right as I still have
in all my companies to run what I do is
I would actually put them all together
in batches meaning that I would block
out they say a certain date for filming
and from that day we would create a
bunch of videos it could be five six
seven videos enough videos for the whole
week or for for more than ten days
that's all I do so I'm not actually
filming every day I shouldn't leave him
few days a month that's being efficient
I'm sure you do the same thing s so then
maybe you can we can put in a suit we do
a suit change right from there with film
we plan ahead at a time would you I have
a process that I do this your
efficiently and from there you just
create content so is you're not it's not
like I'm filming all the time no as much
as I love this we don't want to be
filming all the time yeah yeah right
there are times with downtime but if you
block it out that way in invest that's
the world
invest your time couple days a month
create some videos and that's because I
am way more aggressive when it comes to
to creating content we're uploading a
video every day you don't need to upload
video every day
right how often y'all believe we don't
know I do three a week yeah three I used
to do that at one point too but I do
about 150 videos a year that's right 150
videos if you're getting started maybe
it's like one video we I'd say that's
the bare minimum one week one video a
week or maybe if you're a little bit
more ambitious maybe two videos a week
well that's like one full day of filming
that gives you enough to use for the
whole month right yeah that's why
working at I'm the exact same way
although sometimes if I'm out and about
some are traveling on yourself my phone
and share an idea that I might have had
but the key word I think is being
efficient at that time and what I found
is that if you try to do it every day
it's harder because you lose that flow
like you know right now when you set
everything up and once you do one video
it's so much easier to do the second the
third the fourth because you get
momentum you're out of your head you're
more comfortable you're more relaxed
you've already kind of set everything up
and it becomes a lot easier and then
another thing that I do and I know you
do this as well is that once you create
the video you can repurpose it so you
can put it on YouTube which is always
the number one thing I do but you can
take that and put it on Facebook you
could take that turn into a podcast and
use the audio from that yeah you could
take clips from it put it on your
Instagram or your Facebook you can
repurpose that we even transcribe it
create turn into an article so we have
it on our blog and we do all the
different ways of marketing to a track
but it's discontent what that one video
it always starts with that one video
yeah that you'd create everything else
from so now you're working a lot smarter
in that one video is producing five to
ten pieces of content so you don't
always have to create something new for
your Instagram or for your Facebook
whatever you take that one video and now
you've got ten different pieces of
content and this and this a very precise
process how we do that right the content
flow how did it go from video to article
to podcast to to Instagram post to
everything else so it feels like
omnipresence right we are everywhere but
the truth is everything comes from the
videos it's from the video there's
goes through all these and that's how
you build that huge personal brain yes
so so Dan I know you've created a new
