academia.edu sharing its webserver with multiple other websites. For smaller websites this is quite normal. They do not need all the computer power and internet bandwidth all the time. In this way the can share the costs of the infrastructure with multiple other sites.

Academia is a rip off
Academia is a rip off. I made the mistake and signed up only to cancel 30 minutes later after realizing their service was not going to help me in any way. They refused to reimburse me my money. Unethical folks (Hannah). Please whatever you do, do not sign up. Very little value. I signed up with Course Hero - night and day difference. Value add and ethical. After opening a free account in order to find articles for my studies, I started getting emails from Academia.edu claiming that there has been new research published that contains my name or references my publications. It's been entirely random and very obviously fake information (e.g. foreign universities, publications in other languages, areas of research that have nothing to do with me, but first and foremost because I have no publications online that could be referenced by other researchers). Of course, they won't let me see any details without signing up for a paid account. This is such an obvious and blatant lie to lure people in to pay money, it meets the legal definition of a fraud. This service has no right to operate in the .edu domain and should be shut down as scammers they are.Accounts flagged for no reason
I used to have a free account with them through my main Google account. I deleted it after being spammed with hundreds of emails from academia saying I was referenced countless times, which was impossible as I haven't published anything yet!
I made the mistake to re-open an account with them when I decided to continue my academic career, using my university email account. Well my account got flagged for suspicious activity WITH AN OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY EMAIL ACCOUNT. I was never flagged for any activity with a normal gmail account in 4 years!!
Academia edu should close down for good as it has not only encountered several copyright issues but it clearly makes actual researchers' life difficult. I was shocked to find out that Academia.edu posts copyright material on Google Scholar with no permission from the authors. This is illegal. Even afer one delets the academia account they still continue their illegal activity. They need to be stopped!This outfit makes it impossible to cancel within the 30 day trial period.

Academia said my study focusing on a health issue was being read by their subscribers. I have never provided Academia with this or any other report. I believe that when I have sent this report on pdf to various recipients using various email providers, it was hijacked (stolen) and then maybe sold to Academia. I had a very bad experience with Academia.edu which insulted my personality, violated my human rights, and harmed my reputation.
I logged in my account last Sunday to reply to a message I received from a member. Then, I realized that I had difficulties to log in. After some attempts and using my social media login, I saw a message on my dashboard that my account was frozen because it had been flagged as suspicious.
It looked very odd but I followed the instructions and submitted all required information.
Unfortunately, it was Sunday and obviously, a manual review could not be done quickly,
Next, I tried to see my profile-website because I was and I had paid a premium subscription and I saw that I was unable to download even my own documents.
My problem with this situation is as follows:
1. In democracies, we are all innocents until someone or an authority proves that we guilty. They froze my account without giving any explanation and without giving me the opportunity to support myself. They just adopted a flag and froze my account until I prove my innocence!
2. Freezing my account, I had no access to my document and my high rating was not visible.
3. A flagged account as suspicious harmed my personality and my reputation as well as my human rights.
4. Once they examine or believe that I my account is suspicious, why do they accept my money for the premium subscription?
I wrote all of the above to Academia.edu but I have not received a response yet. Actually, I was so sorry for this development and the fact that they like my money but they are not sure about my credibility, and I decided to delete my account on Sunday night or Monday. I left a message with the above also.
The account deleted but no response yet.
They do not care!
And one more thing: I respect their policy and I support all measures aiming at securing reliability and safety. But their policy is just ridiculous. Why? Anyone can flag an account as suspicious. Imagine a member to flag the half accounts. Then, the half academia.edu will be frozen (?)
I think that this not an intelligent, secure, efficient and proactive policy.
It is rather an anti-democratic practice that shows the lack of modern security systems and policies.
Also, I wrote to Academia.edu that I have provided all required information for their check and the fact that I am an MBA student and a research manager in London and Zurich.
Note that I was in the top 0.5% of the researchers at academia.edu.
Lastly, another sign of their culture is that there is not an obvious link (menu) to contact them. I believe that it is the minimum for transparency and credibility of a website. Instead, they have a support menu. You have to enter a question such as "contact". Then you receive some answers and one links to a page where you can send a message.
If I am not blind, a contact form or link is not visible on their website.
I will send a link to this review and wonder if they pay any attention.

As others, I too have received emails stating that I am mentioned in so and so many publications. Indeed, when I check my account with Academia.edu, it is claimed that I am mentioned in 88 publications(!)
Truth be told, I have published nothing worth quoting, nor is there any reason that I should be mentioned in any academic context. Of course, to see those 88 "mentions", I would have to pay.
I've tried to contact Academia.edu. Twice. The first time I received a non-answer, the second time no answer at all. I asked to have just a couple of examples of mentions, so I can verify that it is correct. And if that would be the case, I would have purchased a subscription. But of course, when there are no mentions, no examples can be given.
Academia seems to be willing to use lies in order to make people pay.
