how to go from this to this gonna give
you all the details right on this video
what's up guys big Mart care thank you
so much for coming back to my channel
it's great to see you guys here today
you know normally we talk about making
money online how to become an
entrepreneur how to work from home and
all that good stuff we talk about
YouTube tips how to get more views and
subscribers on YouTube but today I
wanted to show you how you can look
better on your videos just by changing a
few lights here and there and by making
a few adjustments on your camera it can
really make a huge difference okay it
can up your production value a little
bit and just make give it a little bit
more pizazz now normally I wouldn't
blight my videos like this this is a
little bit over the top okay
I added some lights in the background a
little bit of a light decoration over
there on the side and everything but I
just want to show you what is possible
and just by moving a few little simple
things and that's what we're going to
talk about on this video let's just go
ahead and get started here I want to
talk about three-point lighting which is
one of the most basic lighting setups
that you can have a lot of youtubers use
this and they also use it in movies and
different films and different things and
so let me just go ahead and let's walk
through here and tell you what this is
all about so the three standard
three-point lighting and what that is
the first thing is you're going to have
a key light now the key light is usually
the brightest light that's shining on
the subjects face okay so me being the
subject I'm looking at the key light
right now that's over here on the side
of my face alright so that's a hit me
right here and then there's also
something called a fill light which is
something that is shining on this side
of my face that way might this side of
my face is not in complete darkness you
know as you still want to see my eyes
be like ambient light which is what I
also have and or you could all you know
open up a window a little bit maybe let
a little bit of light in just to fill in
the other side of your face but the
reason why we have one side and I think
a lot of youtubers make this mistake by
placing the light directly right in
front of them and what happens is is
this creates like a to the
a flat image and so in film what they do
is in order to create like a more more
depth to videos as they use lighting to
do that right and one of the other ways
to do that is to have a backlight so you
can see right here I have a little light
on my hair and then down here on my neck
on just the back of my neck here and
then you can see a little bit of light
here rolling off my shirt here can I
have a dark shirt on but you can see it
is just kind of rolling off here and
what that does is a backlight separates
me from the background okay this is very
commonly used let me show you a couple
images right here looking at this one
just a clip from a movie and you can see
a little backlight hitting her shoulder
there and I can't see the top of her
head but you can see a little bit of
light here in the back and then you have
this uh this this key light over here
hitting here on this side but then
there's a little bit of a fill light
that way her the other side of her face
is not in complete darkness here's
another little example I went to the gym
today with my wife and I looked up at
the TV monitors in there and I saw a
soap opera and I thought oh my gosh this
would be like a perfect example
to show you guys what they do in movie
scenes and different things like that in
this case a soap opera so something
that's on TV but you can see right here
you can see the light on her head there
which normally they call a backlight can
also be called a rim light a hair light
there's lots of different little names
for it but you can see that you can see
the light there on her hair and it just
kind of comes down behind and then on
her shoulder right here and then I can
see a little bit of light over here on
this cheek which seems to be a little
bit brighter and then over here it's a
little bit darker on this side of her
face and so let's go and check out
another one
oh wait check out this dude right here
he's got the light on guys this is not a
mistake all right
these actors and actresses are
instructed to stand right in the perfect
position okay like the lighting guy will
go OK or the director will say okay
you're gonna walk and then you're gonna
stop here
you know they will direct the actors
where to stop and then the lighting will
be positioned according to that all
right so it's not a mistake like there's
like some like halogen light flying
around somewhere on the ceiling and and
wherever it lands it lands know this is
really all set up guys to give it that
drama that dramatic
in everything so this is really cool and
that's what I'm excited about today
because I'm gonna show you guys really
how all this stuff works you can see
that backlight hitting his shoulder
there look how that works that's the
first thing I want to show you guys
because this is gonna this is gonna
really make all the difference so first
let me show you what it looks like by
just having a backlight all right so let
me go and change the image and I'll be
right back ooh spooky
all right so this is just the backlight
by itself you could see it you know my
hair is a little lit up there and then
it's just running down the side of my
face and you can see like the back of my
neck here and then now you can see it on
my shoulder here and that's separating
me from the background okay it's just a
now I've seen movies where they just use
a backlight only they don't have a key
light or anything like that now what
we're gonna do here what I want to show
you guys is the very first thing you
should do before you do any type of
lighting in your room in your office in
your in your studio or wherever you are
and that is is to block out all the
lighting all the external lighting all
the windows and everything just go ahead
and turn the blinds and put something
over the windows and get the room as
dark as possible
okay so all the natural light needs to
be covered up all right it sounds a
little weird and it almost looks like
this is nighttime right now but it's not
this is like in the middle of the day
it's like 3:30 p.m. right now and so so
that's what I'm going to do I'm going to
turn off all the lights here we go okay
now now it's really spooky I this almost
pitch-black I can't see anything so this
is how it should look when you guys
first get started okay and so then at
this point what you want to do is
introduce light into the scene okay so I
can start over here by reaching over and
turning on this light over here and
let's see how that looks okay and then I
can tilt that a little bit and I am
introducing light into the scene just
like that I'm creating my own image it's
a little bit blurry and because there's
not enough light in here for the camera
to focus properly but I just want to
show you that so what I'm gonna do first
is we're gonna start from scratch from
complete scratch and we're gonna start
with the key light okay
so let me
just go ahead and turn on the key light
real quick I'll be right back all right
so here's just the key light alone now
it's almost like overly dramatic right
they do this in movies all the time it's
kind of like a new are kind of look and
I use it sometimes I've used it on
different videos and stuff and I used to
do like little films and stuff back in
the day but for YouTube man I don't know
probably not going to fit every single
video unless you have like a camera or
video channel where you talk about
filmmaking and stuff it may not apply
for everything but it's a start it's the
very first light so looking over on the
slide here a little image that I have
this is where we are right now so we can
see that I have the key light here which
is right up here okay and here's the
camera so here's me and the cameras you
know pointing in this direction and so
this is approximately where the key
light is now the key light is like off
to the side but it's it's up a little
bit so it's kind of like shining down
like this it's not quite right on the
side of my face or at this angle or at
this height it's up a little bit more
and the light is very soft and what
normally they call like a softbox and
I'm gonna show you exactly what light to
get for this but so that's the key light
right there now that's one and so now we
will must do is have some type of
ambient light or a fill light now for
the fill light I have a little lamp over
here on on my desk here so I'm gonna go
ahead and turn that on and that's going
to create some type of fill for this
side of my face
you see it light up a little bit now I
don't want my fill light to bright
because I want to have a casting shadow
on this side of my face you see how that
my nose here it's casting a little bit
of shadow here so this is what you want
this is creating depth three-dimensional
okay this is what I talked about earlier
a lot of guys just have all that
brightness right in front of them and it
creates a flat two-dimensional image all
right so we're creating depth here
that's the whole point of this this
three-point lighting and what they do on
the soap operas and the movies and stuff
okay so now that we have that but you
can see that I just kind of fade off
into the background you see that like
Mike
it's a pretty dark shirt it's like a
like a dark purple or something like
that but there needs to be some type of
separation from me and the background to
create more debt all right and then so
what do we do well we introduced the
backlight which is down here and or you
can just call it the rim light some
people call it the hair light so let me
go ahead and turn that on all right so
there's the backlight and you can see
now I have that backlight a little bit
high up kind of behind me a little bit
shining down on my back so it gets my
neck here a little bit which is really
good because then that shows the edge
hence why they call it the rim but you
can see it shows the the edge or the rim
of my shirt there of my shoulder a
little bit and what I'm gonna do also is
add some more ambient light you guys can
do this if needed because sometimes it
gets super super dark but let me go
ahead and I'll be right back all right
there we go so if you find your room
even after the three-point lighting
technique if you find that your room is
still a little bit too dark you can add
a little bit of ambient light by you
know opening the blinds a little bit on
the window or have a light pointing
directly up at the ceiling and what that
will do is spread the light evenly
throughout around the room all right so
there's one thing missing before we
continue and this is going to be what
they call a practical light because
you're looking at the video of me right
now you know behind me you can see the
room and the bookshelf and everything
but there's no lights in the room and so
for the viewer to actually look at this
and go well I see this dude he's all lit
up and everything but where's the light
coming from so we have to create some
type of practical light and they use
this in movies and in interviews all the
time as a matter of fact in most cases
you might see Gus some dude sitting down
on a couch and there could be like a
lamp next to him and really that lamp is
not putting out much light and the light
source is coming from somewhere else
totally different and so that's like a
little secret there when it comes to
movies and stuff but so what I'm gonna
do is actually go on and turn on my
practical lights boom there we go all
right so I've got a little lamp up here
on top of the bookshelf and that used to
be on my other table in the office but I
just went ahead and position that above
the book
for this video and and then I have this
little this little light lighting
branches type of thing I'm going to show
you guys where to get these basically it
just looks like like some plant branches
and then there's little tiny lights that
are stuck on to it all over the place
and it really it's kind of trendy a lot
of youtubers use it other people use
those fiber-optic lights and different
things in the background but it really
makes a big difference it it really adds
a lot of pizazz and it just ups the
production value a little bit with your
videos so it doesn't look so boring back
there with just a bunch of blackness
okay so just a few like I said guys just
a couple little different things can
really make a huge difference in your
videos next I want to talk about the
camera that I use and the different
settings that I have so you guys can get
a similar look just like this okay you
know when I started my youtube channel I
used a webcam and the thing about the
webcam is that it doesn't give you all
those controls that you would normally
get with a professional camera or like a
DSLR or something like that so with the
webcam I couldn't control the exposure
properly the speed the frame rate the
ISO and all that stuff and so what I
would have was this like completely
blown out picture you know if I set up a
key light shining on my face it would be
totally like overexposed and I really
had like minimal control on how I wanted
that to look so I started using my DSLR
which is what you're looking at right
now and the one I'm using is the Canon
80 D and I really like this one because
it has a little LCD flip out and I can
actually see myself like I'm looking
over here at the LCD right now but if I
turn my face now I'm looking directly at
you guys at the lens and that's really
cool because with the LCD I can see
exactly where I'm positioned on the
screen so it's very very helpful now
when it comes to the DSLR what I would
recommend is to set it on manual which
is just a little on a dial there it says
em and that's going to give you full
manual controls with the ISO the shutter
speed and the aperture okay which are
very very important and also I want to
let you guys know if you want more of a
cinematic
then I would recommend to change the
frame rate on your camera to 24 frames
per second okay and so it might look
like 23.9 or it might say 24 P a lot of
people will just buy the camera take it
out of the box and put it on a tripod
and start recording and that's cool and
everything but a lot of times it's set
somewhere around you know 30 frames per
second 50 or 60 frames per second so to
really get that cinematic look and to
have the same frame rate like real film
cameras do in the movies then you'll
want to adjust that and turn it down to
24 frames per second the next setting
you guys are gonna want to change is the
shutter speed now to really get that
nice creamy cinematic look you're gonna
want to set your shutter speed to 150th
of a second okay so 1/5 zero and so what
it is it's basically your frame rate
times to the closest shutter speed to
that and usually normally a lot of
people just do one fiftieth of a second
some people do like one sixtieth but I
like 150 I just feel like it gives a
nice smoother look now after that you
guys are gonna want to have the widest
aperture possible and so the aperture is
that little number there it'll sometimes
have a little F next to it and so the
higher the number the smaller the
aperture so what you want to do is you
want to get that aperture number down as
as much as possible and what that's
going to do is create a more shallow
depth of field so if you're wondering
how they get the background to blur out
on movies and photography and stuff well
that's because they're using a very wide
aperture all right so they don't have to
have as much light to take the shot and
so for this one I'm using a four I'm
using a stop or f4 and so that's about
as low as I can go with this particular
lens that I have on this camera right
now they have cameras they have lenses
that go down to like 1.2 you know it
just really depends that the smaller the
wider the aperture lenses you buy
they're more expensive they are you can
just use the regular kit lens that comes
with your camera that's completely fine
I don't have to go crazy but and then
what you guys want to do is you want to
adjust your ISO because for this
particular shot I
inside of a bedroom I'm not outside in
the daylight where I could really get
away with a much lower ISO see if I'm
here now I'm gonna go ahead and just
adjust my ISO if I turn up my ISO right
now to 3200 that's gonna kind of blow
the whole shot right it's totally blown
out and it's overexposed or even if it
was just down a little bit lower maybe
somewhere let me go ahead and see if I
can change this even if I lower it just
a little bit it still might not give me
that cinematic look that I'm looking for
and the higher the ISO that you use the
more grain and noise that's going to be
in your videos so just keep that in mind
so what I'm gonna do is just lower that
ISO down a little bit where I had it and
that was ISO 200 normally this a DD
really it does it's a little bit grainy
at the higher ISO levels so luckily I'm
pretty happy that I can have a decent
image down here at ISO 200 so that's a
little bit of the techy stuff I don't
want to get too much into that on this
video but let's just go over and let me
show you exactly the kind of lighting
that I'm using so the softbox that I use
what this is the key light that you're
looking at that's shining down on this
side of my face right here this is a
full the tech or Vava tech I think you
call it it's a it's a twenty by twenty
eight softbox and I'll show you what
this looks like and basically it's just
this big fabric box that has this white
covering over it and then there's a
light inside the box that that shines
through the box and then out and it
creates this much softer light and this
is the one that I've used right here
this is actually pretty cheap I've been
using it for months and it only cost me
like 70 bucks you can get two for around
140 bucks it's totally worth it guys I'm
using the same bulbs that I have inside
mine I've been using them for I don't
know like nine months now and they work
just fine so this is the fava Tech one
by twenty by twenty eight it comes with
the light with the stand with the
softbox and everything that you need to
get started okay I don't even have
affiliate links for this stuff but I'll
I'll put links down below in the
description of this video let's look at
another one here so what you're looking
at right here and I think they call
these
call is like a branch lighting or
lighted branches or whatever and that's
what I'm using for right back here as
you can see I got a little bit of a
light coming in from the window let me
go ahead and turn that off all right so
I closed the blinds on that window just
to make a little bit darker in here I'm
telling you that natural light can
sometimes be a pain because the thing
about natural light is you can't control
it so turning the blinds down now you
can see those little accent lights start
to light up there in the background and
so this is what I'm using right here and
you can also use like multicolored LED
fiber optics I've seen a lot of
youtubers use this as well
what else do we got here string lights I
think they call it you can get it you
know you can go you can buy this stuff
at Walmart
these little branch lights here you can
get at like Michael's you can go to
Walmart and get em or like Target you
know if you live in the US you can find
this stuff and basically you just go buy
a separate vase and then you stick those
branches in there and then just plug
them in or most of the time it just
takes a battery and it's really really
easy to use and set up and I've seen a
lot of youtubers do this where they will
put the string lights in their bookshelf
in the back just to kind of give it a
little bit of extra Flair kind of
creates a little bit of a romantic
cinematic look very pleasant on the eyes
and so what else do we got here and then
just a simple lamp that you can use I
actually have two lamps in my room I
have one over here and if I turn that
away you can see that now this side of
my face is probably a little bit too
dark for my taste so I'm gonna go ahead
and turn that back to use it as a fill
just to brighten up this side of my face
a little bit but I also have one up
there as a practical light okay and so
there you go guys that's really what
it's all about it it's really that
simple three-point lighting it's been
around for years okay so if you guys
have any questions about any of this
stuff what kind of equipment that I use
you know maybe the type of lens I use or
the microphone or whatever leave me a
comment below this video and I'll be
sure to get back to you right away with
an answer okay so hope you guys enjoy
