5 Strategies to Get More Email Subscribers — How to Start an Email List #3

hey guys what's up Pat here from smart
passive income calm welcome to video 3
of the how to start an email it series
if you haven't checked out any of the
other videos I was actually recommend
going to start an email it's calm to see
all of them there for you plus some
giveaways and other information for you
but for now in this video I'm going to
share with you five more advanced
strategies that people are using to
really scale the list building process
so let's dive right in
alright so first up I want to talk about
the two-step opt-in process and that is
instead of directly asking for an email
address and the name on your webpage
when people land on it you first show
them a button with a call to action for
example subscribe now or register for
the webinar or download this thing or
get instant access whatever it is
instead of asking directly for the email
you first have them click a button
leadpages does this very well they're
actually the company that really made
this technique famous and it does work
there's a lot of data behind it I've
tested this myself which is why I do it
on my own site too but if you click on
for example subscribe now you'll then
see an opt-in form pop up you scroll
down here register for Wednesday's
webinar same thing even within the post
here you can click to download the
templates about this post you can click
on that and then an opt-in form pops up
now what's really interesting about this
is it adds an additional step so you
might think yourself well why does why
would this work well what happens is
when people click they only have two
options here everything else the rest of
the webpage the distractions go away I
can only either subscribe or exit and so
you're more likely to get a decision and
you just want people on your website to
make decisions to help explain this a
little bit more
I have clay collins the CEO and
co-founder of leadpages on an episode of
my podcast to help explain this even
more ok so let me click play I have it
queued up here what I've found is that
when people go to a website or web page
they make an immediate determination
about whether or not it's a giving page
or a taking page and when you have an
opt-in box immediately there from from
the second someone arrived it looks like
you have your handout and so by only up
offering people the opportunity to
opt-in after they've asked for
you you just get a dramatic increase in
an opt-in rate so of course the question
at this point might be well how do you
create a two-step opt-in if you're using
convertkit
as your email service provider as I
demonstrated in previous videos well
then it's really easy you just have to
change the form style so with any form
that you create you can go into the
settings and then click on style here
you can select modal window which is
where you get the darkened background
effect and the the window really pops in
front of you if you change it to timing
you can actually turn that into a text
link here as well and just copy paste
that into your code and then that'll
when people click on that link open up
that pop-up for you you can even through
a little bit of a quick customization or
CSS you can have it be a button as well
so that's really easy to do now most
people are using leadpages for their
advanced email building strategies and
using the two-step opt-in process
because through the hundreds of
different landing page templates that
are available for you both paid and free
after you subscribe to leadpages
well the two-step opt-in process is
typically built-in so I'm just going to
preview this one really quick to show
you what it looks like you won't see an
opt-in form with a name and email until
you were to click these buttons and
what's really cool about leadpages you
can customize as much as this as you'd
like and even when the pop-up shows that
you can customize that as well so
leadpages offers you a lot more advanced
customization and landing page and what
they call lead boxes actually you can
actually create your own lead box so not
not selecting a landing page fully but
actually just the pop-up part when
people click a button or a text link so
for example this is an old lead box but
you can see conversion rates here
between 30 and 88 percent which is crazy
so here I'm editing a lead box this is
what it would look like and you can
change the text here and have more
fields or whatever but if I were to
publish this you can see right here it's
very easy to change that into an image
so I can upload my own button I can use
a button provided by leadpages or just a
plain text link and be able to customize
whatever that text is and just copy and
paste this put
on my website you can even put on put it
on somebody else's website which is
pretty crazy and then when people click
on that text link and or image that's
going to show up and you can collect
email subscribers that way so to
conclude a 2-step opt-in process is a
great way to not only declutter your
site and not have opt-in forms show up
immediately but and very important have
a person make a quick decision based on
something that you're giving them not
something you're taking from them then
you can ask for an email address number
two unique content upgrades these are
lead magnets that you create not for
your entire site but you offer them on
specific posts or podcast episodes or
videos that you create what this does is
it increases your opt-in rate because
that offer is related to that piece of
content that they're already consuming
and in my opinion nobody does this
better than Amy Porterfield from Amy
Porterfield comm I actually remember
when she started using this strategy and
I started to notice that in her podcast
episode she was talking about these
specific downloads that were again
directly related to her podcast episode
I remember talking to her and she said
that this was working so well that she
was going to do it a lot more often and
she has she doesn't do it in every
episode and you shouldn't do it in every
piece of content that you come out with
either but the ones that makes sense you
can create a lead magnet like we talked
about in the last video that relates
that to that content and so for example
here which is a post related to content
and launch
she has a three-stage content marketing
launch plan on this particular podcast
episode here which is about your
promotional calendar she has a giveaway
for a quick guide for that which is
really easy you can do things like
checklists - here's one which is about
ad spend on Facebook and the bonus here
is a calculator or a worksheet here is
one related to getting your content
house in order and here's a Content
platform play-by-play this one which is
about creating bonuses for your content
when you offer a course here you can
click to get a must-have steps for
creating extraordinary bonuses so as you
can see these are directly related to
the particular episodes that she's
coming out with so three final things
about the content upgrade I want to
share with you one in order to deliver
them you can do them
we convert hit using the incentive email
you can actually upload that particular
file here and then have people click a
button on the first email they get after
subscribe to actually download it
obviously you can use things like
leadpages which is what amy porterfield
was using to deliver her content
upgrades so that's the first thing on
delivering secondly don't make it too
hard on yourself you don't have to make
these things quite large or big a single
page PDF a worksheet a checklist
whatever be creative but also don't make
it too hard on yourself in terms of what
the content upgrades are and then
finally pick the top one or two posts or
pages on your website and just start
with that that's how you know what to do
first so go into your Google Analytics
determine which posts are most popular
work on creating a Content upgrade for
that one first and then you can start
expanding and getting to sort of having
what like Amy Porterfield has on
multiple episodes multiple blog posts
okay so next step we're going to visit
the whiteboard here and talk about
strategy number three which a lot of
people are using and that is webinars so
please excuse my bad handwriting here
but I wanted to show you some of the
workflows that people are using now
webinar is a live training sometimes
it's pre-recorded but it's usually live
now it differs from things like Facebook
live or periscope because people are
registering to get access to these at a
later date so whether it's you on camera
or maybe a desktop sharing of some kind
and usually these things come with chat
as well usually what happens is you
drive traffic to a landing page that has
you know maybe a video describing what
this thing is and some text as well but
then of course you collect a name and an
email and that's where people can then
subscribe after clicking on a button
well then what happens is people then
get a series of emails leading up to
that event and it could be however many
days in advance but typically you'd want
to do at least a week in advance to get
people to sign up and then get the
webinar longer than that sometimes
people forget about it so these emails
are going to be really important but
what happens is then they'll get access
to the page that has this on it and then
you deliver your presentation or you
answer questions or whatever it is and
no matter
what happened you've already collected
that email address over here so even if
people don't purchase if you are doing a
promo of some kind you still have their
email address and many people have said
that webinars are the number one way
that people have been growing their
email lists so you can do for example on
the webinar you could present and do a
promotion of some kind which is usually
like 45 minutes of content and then 15
minutes of promo and then you can also
do just simply providing value maybe not
even asking for anything - simply
providing value a presentation that
helps your audience in some way shape or
form again getting them excited enough
to start to subscribe to your email us
here then finally you could do what I
often do which is a Q&A which is very
simple because you just answer people's
questions you don't necessarily have to
prepare anything but of course the more
people who are on the webinar the better
because you'll have more questions to
answer and that can go quite long
depending on how much chatter you have
in there now the question might be well
how do you get traffic here well there's
a number of different ways to do that
you can use social media you can use
what a lot of people are using which is
Facebook Ads
and you might have noticed a lot of
these already in your Facebook feed or
you can actually have others so joint
venture partnerships
now what joint venture partnerships mean
is that there's some sort of deal and
this typically happens when there's a
promotion involved so a JV a person that
you've connected with a relationship
that you had that you have online maybe
you've helped them out before and this
is them helping you out well the JV will
send their traffic to your landing page
knowing that their audience is going to
get either some amazing value I'm going
to have their questions answered or the
JV will know that there's going to be a
promotion in which case you might share
a commission from anybody who they bring
over that actually makes a sale so
webinar is a very powerful tool that you
can use and if you can access other
people's lists and contacts and have
them get excited to share their people
over to your to your landing page here
which allows you to then collect their
email address well you're going to be
able to grow your list pretty fast
relatively speaking in terms of what
kind of software you can use to host
set up your webinar you have plenty of
options out there and the one that I
typically recommend if you're going to
be serious about doing webinars on a
regular basis is webinar ninja Co
because they've taken all the crazy hard
to understand tech out of the setup
process and so it's very easy to set up
and also very economical related to a
lot of other options that you have out
there so if you want to check out
webinar ninja Co you can go through my
affiliate link if you'd like at
smartpassiveincome.com slash webinar
ninja now traditionally most online
marketers have been using GoToWebinar
and that was simply because they were
the only ones with the capability to
offer a webinar that people could
register for but now like I said there's
many other options but people still use
GoToWebinar because it is one of the
most reliable and most supported webinar
platforms out there like I said it does
come with a higher price point which is
sort of a negative but it is very easy
to use and very easy for your viewers to
kind of have a great webinar experience
on the other end now if you'd like to go
the free route you can totally do that
many people have built their empires and
have sold millions of dollars of
products on live webinars using free
software for example John Lee Dumas he's
done this very well with his products it
used to be Google Hangouts on air that
was the mechanism by which he would
share these webinars and this
information for free however recently
got changed to youtube live same thing
it's still called Google Hangouts on air
it just happens to be initiated now on
YouTube live instead of through your
Google profile so when YouTube go to
your profile and then go to your creator
studio under live streaming click on
events to do this all you have to do is
click on new live event and set it up
from there and that gives you an embed
code that embed code is what you would
then put on your website where you would
then host that video and show it to
people and you would give people access
to that page after they register now
there's many ways to do this but the
easiest way to do this is of course
using leadpages it says this is what
they're set up for they actually have
standard templates specifically for
webinars for the registration portion
and also the viewing portion so you can
actually have a lead page you don't even
need your own website to do this but you
can have your own lead page that then
hosts the video where people can go and
watch you live and
also take action on whatever calls to
actions you include using the buttons
that are there sometimes like I said
they have a chat room in there to makes
it really really simple you just take
the embed code from your YouTube live
video place it onto that lead page and
you share that page and then you're off
to the races
now while we're here at leadpages I want
to drop an advanced tip or strategy
number four and that is using text
messages to collect email subscribers
this is really cool because if you are
for example doing a presentation or even
a video or podcast episode at the end of
it you can offer a little word that
people can text to a specific set of
numbers in exchange for a free gift and
you will get their email address of a
cent at the same time I will show you
the workflow in just a sec I've done
this before and it works very very well
it's using a tool called lead digits
here at leadpages there are a lot of
other pieces of software that can do
this for you but since it's within
leadpages if you have it it's just very
easy to setup because it all connects
together so create new lead digit here
and actually you can see the workflow on
the right-hand side here as I work
through this so you select a number
that's what people will have to text to
they will text the actual identifier
here so let's just say have a ice so
people will text patty ice 2 3 3 4 4 4
and you can actually see the
conversation here if people do that
they'll get an immediate text back
saying hello please reply with a text
containing only your email address so we
can send you everything we promised you
do that and then they get a text message
back immediately and this is again all
automated it says thank you for opting
in please reply with stop at any time to
unsubscribe you can customize that
message here if you'd like and I'm going
to hit continue and then here it again
confirms that when people send the text
patty ice to number 3 3 4 4 4 you're
going to get their email address and
you'll receive a notification to your
main email address you can actually
select what should happen after people
opt in using this process so you can get
a notification if you'd like you can add
the customers email right to your
emailing list you can register them for
a GoToWebinar event leadpages integrates
with GoToWebinar quite well or and you
can deliver a lead magnet to that
customer so if you're at a presentation
and you say hey if you want to get the
slides text this to that you can click
here and you can
upload your file there it's all
automated it's so cool how and easy this
is to use like I said I've done this
before I was speaking in front of a
group of about 250 people 56 people
opted in to get my slide tips and it
worked out really well I got 56 opt-ins
it was really cool okay and finally I
want to talk about a strategy that's
worked out really well for me and many
other people and that is number five
contests or giveaways these are great
because they get people excited and of
course if you use the right tools and
mechanisms the contest can have a viral
aspect meaning you can get a lot of new
exposure and growth because people want
to share to get more entries for example
so I'm using a tool here called King
sumo it's a wordpress plugin so if you
have a WordPress website this would be
my tool of choice for you and here you
can actually win all of my favorite
books from 2016 now this contest has
already ended but I selected five
winners and the tool selects all those
winners for you it does it all
automatically but what's really cool is
that when people sign up for the contest
to gain an entry they can gain even more
entries by sharing it on different
social media platforms so what was
really cool as I saw that well there
were 5,000 284 contestants for this
particular book club giveaway however
look at how many entries there are six
thousand nine hundred and fifty-five
almost seven thousand entries meaning
there were a lot of meaning there were a
lot of people who enter the contest who
then shared it and that's where actually
most of the brand-new email subscribers
came with from people who were already
on my list sharing it to gain more
entries which is really cool like I said
this tool is at King sumo dot-com this
is by the creators of appSumo and also
sumo me which are two really popular
sites and tools out there that you can
use but again this is if you have a
wordpress website if you don't have a
WordPress website I would recommend
using something like Rafflecopter which
I've heard many great things about I
haven't personally used it myself
but I also know that it works really
well and it's one of the major contest
apps and applications out there that you
can use to run your contests no matter
what kind of website that you have
alright great job everybody we're here
at the end of the video and a recap for
you these five strategies for you really
quick before we move on to the next one
number one the 2-step opt-in process
remember getting people to click a
button
or a link first before you then ask for
the name and/or email address number two
the unique content upgrades so depending
on a blog post or podcast episode you
come out with actually creating a small
little upgrade some additional checklist
or QuickStart guide or something
calculator that people can use to then
enhance that post well have people
subscribe for that you're going to get a
lot more email addresses number three
webinars driving traffic to a landing
page to collect an email and then
offering a webinar a live video that you
can use to help train people to promote
things but whatever the case may be
you're collecting email addresses even
before it happens so set up a webinar
you'll get more emails number for
subscriptions via text message remember
we were using lead digits through
leadpages to make that happen if you'd
like to check out the affiliate link for
leadpages because probably tell it's a
really awesome you can go to my
affiliate link which is
smartpassiveincome.com flash lead pages
and then finally number five contests or
giveaways using King sumo or
Rafflecopter or something
to really excite people to want to get
them to even share that contest even
more so you can get more exposure
alright in the next video I'm going to
share with you how to set up your
autoresponder series this is where
automation starts to take place and
where the real power behind email
service providers lie I'll see you there
hey guys thanks so much for watching
video 3 here if you want to check out
the next video and how to start an email
list series you can click on the video
up here to get the next one and if you
want to check out the entire lot I click
over here so you can get all the
information and all the other videos
plus and giveaways too for you video
video 3 this is the place to be in its
video for just open that door that was
so bad
