Hey guys, Pat here, thanks for watching this because this is truly a special series of
videos that's coming up here in season two of SPI TV. You know my life, I feel like so
many amazing things have happened over the course of the last few years that I wanted
to give back. I've always been trying to give back. A lot of you who've been a part of the
Every time I've done that, it's always come back to me in incredible ways. One of those
ways is I got to interview a man named Adam Braun the founder of pencilsofpromise.org,
an organization that helps provide education to children around the world who don't have
the same opportunities we do. After that interview, episode 106 of the SPI
podcast, my outlook on why I do what I do has changed. Obviously I'm doing what I do
for my family, I'm doing what I do for you, but now I wanted to go even bigger. I decided
for my birthday last year that instead of wanting gifts and things like that, I wanted
to give even more. I got a lot of you involved in the campaign that I was doing to build
a couple of schools in Ghana. We had a goal to raise at least $25,000 through the SPI
community, and I said if we did that, I would match it. We totally crossed it, and together
you and I we were able to raise over $50,000 to build two schools.
Earlier this year, I discovered that I was going to have the opportunity to go to Ghana
and visit some of the schools that were build and existing schools, and communities there
that were really benefiting from the Pencils of Promise program. It was a truly life changing
experience, so I'm very thankful. I got to bring my videographer Caleb Wojcik with me
to share this experience with you. Here we go, let's go to Ghana.
Even before landing, I knew that this was a trip that's going to be different than anything
I've experienced before. People coming together to help those who don't have opportunities
like us. And to think of everyone involved from this amazing organization to everyone
who contributed to this campaign, and here we are, to experience it all firsthand.
We have the country director of POP, Pencil of Promise here, I'd like to invite him to
introduce the guest to us. Pat, and I'm from California also.
We have felt in Ghana, let's clap for them. You have done more than enough, and we need
to say a big thank you. I was a little overwhelmed from everything
I was seeing, not in a bad way, just I didn't expect to get such a huge welcome and to see
the festivities, but then I realized this was a big deal because, this is celebrating
education and of course education is about a better future.
We're here on day one of the trip to Ghana and we went to a school site. You can look
over there and actually see what the schools used to look like, and then behind me, you
can see what they look like now. It's such an incredible upgrade, thanks to previous
donors to the Pencils of promise campaigns that has been done in the past. We were greeted
with such a warm welcome from the students, they did a lot of dancing for us. We went
and actually sat in on one of the classes, it was a sixth grade science class where they're
actually using tablets. Pencils of Promise is actually rolling out
a little program where they're using tablets to help the kids teach. They're rolling that
out slowly to kind of test it, and they're going to test to see how well they do and
excel. It's a test to see if it's something they're going to roll out to all the other
schools that they have. It's just incredible how much care and thought that has been put
into the programs. They're working directly with teachers to make sure they're on the
right curriculum. Just to see where they came from, to where they are at now as a result
of this really, really generous people like you guys who have helped donate to the campaign.
Super cool to see the impact that you can have with people that you don't even know
exist, who are amazing. I'm just so happy to be here and it's really puts things into
perspective. The people of Toklokpo are so friendly, so
friendly in fact that they invited me to dance with them. Everyone here is smiling, having
fun and it put a lot of things into perspective for me. It made me think about the things that
I was stressing out about and that they didn't really matter when it came down to it. Already
this trip was having a huge impact on me. Then we got back into the bus, and visited
a second site, to see a school that was not yet occupied, but was rather being built by
the community. It was really cool to see it all in progress. Since the new schools were
not finished yet, we got to see a true account of what the older schools look like.
I couldn't imagine being in those conditions especially in extreme weather but here everybody
was, still learning. To see the villagers, men and women, all working together to build
the school, and then you realize how we all came together, you and I, and Pencils of Promise,
to make all of this happen too. Great things happen when people come together, and this
was only the first day. Join me next week when we go into our second day in Ghana, when
we witness the opening of a brand new school.
