what's up guys Pat Flynn here this is
episode 30 of SPI TV thank you so much
for joining me today today I want to
talk about something really important
especially for those of you who are
podcasters who are conducting interviews
I've conducted hundreds of interviews in
the past and I've learned a few things
so I'd love to share with you my top
tips for what to do when preparing for
an awesome interview here we go
interviews are fantastic because if you
have a podcast it's a great way to have
other people share their expertise with
you and your audience and a lot of
people who conduct interviews think well
it's easy because I just have to let the
other person talk that's not exactly
true yes you're letting the other person
talk and that's actually a very
important tip you you need to let the
however you need to ask the right
questions and even before the interview
starts there's a number of different
things you can do to help prepare
yourself and the person you're
interviewing so that you can have an
awesome and an amazing podcast so here
is just a round-robin whole list of tips
and tricks that you can use to conduct
an awesome interview so the first tip I
have for you is is obviously to just
prepare I mean you need to prepare ahead
of time for the interview and by prepare
I mean first of all you have to know who
you're speaking to but more importantly
you have to know why you're speaking to
them so what is it that they can as a
guest on your show bring to the table
for you and your audience and that's
really important to know because too
many people you know they reach out to
these a-listers and just have them on
the show and it's kind of just a random
sounding thing and as great as it is to
listen to those episodes if there's a
specific purpose for having them on your
show you can help them help you and your
audience you can understand what
questions to ask and you can actually
stay on track and I think that's what
will separate you from a lot of the
other people out there who are
interviewing the same people so as recap
preparing very important and by prepare
I mean understand why you're bringing
this person on the show in the first
place now the second tip related to that
is to not over prepare you can over
prepare for an interview what I mean by
that is I've listened to a number of
interviews where I feel like the person
that is interviewing the guest knows
more than I do
they're already referencing things that
are way above and beyond where I'm at as
a listener and because of that I feel
left out my job as a podcaster is
to ask the questions that I feel my
audience would want to know about - so
what I do is I prepare ahead of time
like I said earlier by understanding
what the transformation I want my
audience to go through with the help of
this person coming on board on my show
but I actually don't go into incredible
depth I don't spend hours reading these
people's books and researching
everything that they've ever done in the
past because I want to know when
extracted information as if I was
somebody who was just like the person
listening on the other end just like you
so my advice for you would be to yes
prepare but also just allow yourself and
trust yourself to be able to ask the
right questions to extract those amazing
stories that amazing data those facts
from those people to be able to
contribute in the way that you want them
to now of course when you're scheduling
an interview you need to know the
schedule and I think it's important that
you and the person that you're speaking
with or will have on as a guest or you
and the person who represents that
person because a lot of times the guest
won't actually be the one talking to you
it'll be a PR person or a Human
Resources person or an assistant make
sure you're on the same page as far as
when the interview is happening the
specific day and a specific date but
more importantly the specific time I've
missed interviews before because I've
been on the error end of the you know
eastern side or western side of the
United States in terms of understanding
when those times are supposed to align
so make sure you're all in same page
double check it's okay before the
interview happens just to double-check
the day before or even hours earlier
before on skype for example just to make
sure that yes you're both in the lineman
and you're both ready and that way if
anything comes up you can understand
that ahead of time instead of just when
you're waiting there on skype for them
to show up and they're not showing up so
again plan ahead by actually making sure
you're all on the same page in terms of
schedule and how you you're actually
going to communicate whether it's Skype
or telephone how is this person actually
going to go on to your show and so make
sure you give them all the instructions
necessary in the simplest manner concise
to the point on how to connect with you
so that you can record the episode now
leading into when the call happens you
want to make sure that your systems your
computers your microphones everything's
all in check so make sure always test I
always do this and it's a big lesson
that I learned way back in the day when
I had recorded actually 20 minutes of an
episode with somebody who I truly admire
I discovered that my microphone was not
in the setting that it shouldn't been it
was recording but it was actually
recording off of my what was it my
webcam microphone instead of my
podcasting microphone so I actually had
to ask this person to rerecord the
episode with me and luckily he was very
kind and understood the situation but
don't let that happen to you just make
sure the mic that you want connected is
the one that's connected make sure that
your skype is up and running if you want
to take the necessary precautions just
to make sure everything's good restart
your computer completely and if possible
be hardwired into that's not always
possible but being hardwired make sure
that any sort of downtime from wireless
you know errors doesn't happen so again
just make sure all your systems your
computers your microphones all your
equipment is in check and ready to go
next make sure that you are rid of all
distractions silence your phones or
better yet turn them off on your desktop
computer turn off your notifications -
because we all get the eye messages and
the slack notifications and the Skype
messages from other people turn Skype
off or don't turn type off if you're
using Skype but put it on do not disturb
so that other people won't disturb you
or even if they do it won't disturb your
show if there's other people around in
the house let them know that you're
about to do an interview and that you
would much like it if they would just
stay quiet for a little bit or at least
stay in the other room I have to do that
because I have two kids and so I let my
wife and my kids know that I have an
interview coming up if they are there in
the house with me and that I'm going to
be sort of recording with somebody for
the next hour so in that that way they
can just you know read quietly in the
bedroom together or whatever but you
know communication with the people
around you who may affect your recording
is very important because you don't want
anything to kind of distract you with
this precious time that you have with
your guests all right now right before
the call happens just do a mental check
make sure you remember who you're
speaking to what you're going to ask
them you don't need to know all the
questions but I think again
understanding what the goals are what
transformation you want your uh needs to
go through after listening to this
person that's really what's going to
guide you you can write things down have
notes always have a notepad available
that's something that I've learned over
time that is very helpful because a lot
of times you're gonna ask a question and
you're gonna have a great guest on who
just loves to chat I think that's the
golden guest the one that just loves to
chat but the problem with that is
sometimes you don't get an opportunity
to ask
all up questions on things that they
talked about because they've already
moved on to the next thing one of the
most important things when you're
conducting an interview is to like I
said earlier let that person continue to
talk but you also as an interviewer you
have a responsibility for you and your
audience to ask questions deeper into
what they've started so what I mean by
that is well why did you do this or what
how did that make you feel don't just
ask a question hear the answer and move
on to the next question go deeper and
oftentimes five or six levels deep after
an initial seed question is truly where
the golden information comes and that's
what's going to help you stand out and
be different from all the other people
who are actually conducting interviews
with that same person too so that's part
of your mental checklist just going
through those things in your head are
you ready to do this I know some people
I think Michael Hyatt actually jumps on
the trampoline before he conducts
interviews just to get the energy going
you know I like to do push-ups
beforehand gets the blood rushing gets
me energized I also love to stand when I
conduct my interviews too so I actually
put my mic up to to this height so that
I can stand and talk and it just I found
that that's actually a lot more
energetic and even the listeners have
picked that up they don't know that I'm
standing but when I made the switch from
sitting down and recording an episode to
standing a few people actually reached
out to me and said Pat I don't know what
it was but for whatever reason you just
seem to have a lot more energy in this
episode and I knew that it was because I
stood up so get that ready and I think
that will help you stay mentally focused
too because you're just boom ready to
get started at that time when that
interview is going to happen and then
you get connected on skype or what have
you and then you're on now one thing I
love to do when I start a conversation
with somebody who is going to be against
my shows I initially tell them obviously
thank you for coming on I'm not
recording right now that's very
important because a lot of people get
freaked out especially people who aren't
used to doing this if you start out by
saying well I'm not recording this right
now it makes them feel a lot more
comfortable they're getting into an
environment that they've never been into
before so let them know that they're in
a safe place make them feel like well
okay well Pat's going to tell me when
I'm going to be recording and so I can
prepare myself that's really important
another thing I like to say is well you
know this is going to be a real casual
conversation just imagine that we're in
a coffee shop together and the audience
they're just a fly on a wall listening
so
worried about them that always makes
people feel more comfortable too and
I've been able to extract some amazing
stories and content from people because
of the fact that I know that I've made
these people feel more comfortable and
make them feel like they're a place
they're in a place that you know they
can they can trust me and they're we're
just like friends in a coffee shop so go
ahead and use those tips yes I'm not
recording right now I'll let you know
and also hey we're on a coffee shop
together we're just having a chat now
one of the toughest things to do when
conducting a podcast is to actually
listen to the other person and it might
sound crazy because obviously you have
them in your headphones or your earbuds
and you're listening to them and you're
talking just like we would in a normal
conversation but for whatever reason
when we're conducting a podcast we feel
like we have to be on the ball with what
questions we're going to ask next and
how we're going to engage with this
person afterwards so much sometimes that
we forget what this person is saying or
we actually don't listen because we're
so worried about what's going to happen
next try really hard just to listen and
this is something that I have to remind
myself over and over and over again
because sometimes questions pop up that
I want to ask but the person is
continuing to talk this is why having a
notepad in front of you is very
important so you can just jot down
really quick one or two words of things
that you want to go back to and then
again just make sure you breathe and
relax because it can it can it can feel
overwhelming sometimes it's not going to
be great right when you start but just
keep practicing and you're going to get
better but again most importantly just
listen and if a question pops in your
head because you want to know more about
it again you're representing your
audience here ask away even if it's not
related to whatever it is that that goal
is well that's how a normal conversation
goes it's very casual that's what
happens in real life bring that to your
show people going to be more connected
they're going to know that you're human
they're going to know that you are in
their heads and that's the best thing
that can happen all right and finally
when you finish up obviously make sure
that you tell this person thank you you
closed the recording window but keep
this person up there and just say hey
thank you again so much I'll let you
know when this episode goes live I'll
send you a link that way you're sort of
priming and prepping them for an email
that's coming out with that link so that
perhaps they'll share it
don't mention like hey I want you to
share it right now I mean that's that's
not why you're there they just get they
just given you so much time and great
information you just want to make sure
that they are thanked for that and that
that they're appreciated so say that and
let them go and then just breathe
because you've just done something
awesome you've extracted this amazing
information that you can then put into
your sequence events your workflow to
turn into a podcast that can be out
there in the world so that's awesome I
hope all those tips have helped you
those are sort of like a condensed
version of all the things that I've
learned related to conducting an
interview over time that has helped me
I've shared this with other people
before it's been really helpful for them
too and I know it's going to help you so
keep pushing forward keep doing those
interviews you're doing amazing and for
those of you who are just starting out
