hey guys what's up guess what it's
December which means a couple things one
that my birthday is coming up soon so
I'm gonna be 34 this year which I'm
super stoked about but not only that it
means we're coming in close to the end
of the year now which means and
typically this is what happens for all
have a lot of big goals coming next year
some of you may have seen some mentions
of things and emails or in podcast
episodes I'll talk more about those
later on but for now I just really want
to help set myself up for success in
2017 there's a couple ways I'm doing
that one of my favorite people in the
world is Michael Hyatt over at
michaelhyatt.com he's helped me in
numerous ways in the past for one he's
helped me with and encouraged me to
actually build my team which has been
massively impactful but I also know him
very well for the way that he approaches
the upcoming year he actually has a
course called best year ever or it's
called 5 days to your best year ever
which I'm actually taking this year
myself and to help promote his course
what he did was he actually created an
e-book and it was titled achieved what
matters in 2017 8 strategies super
successful people are now using to
accomplish more next year
and this is it here it's an e-book I'll
put a link to it down below so you can
check it out
but it actually features 8 different
strategies and 30 different influencers
quotes and how they actually plan for
the next upcoming year and this I've
actually pulled a lot of great
information from this ebook already and
what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna read a
few of those things that some of these
influencers have said and I'm gonna
expand on them for you I'm also going to
share how I'm actually incorporating
those things into my own life in my own
planning for 2017 as well so let's crush
2017 together and let's set ourselves up
for success so after the intro here
we're gonna read some of this and dive
right in okay so one of the things I did
in 2016 that I did more consistently
than I had ever done before was i
journaled and i journaled in this thing
called the 5 minute journal which i
highly recommend and I like that because
you can start your day writing down what
you're thankful for is it's a really
short amount of time you can also write
down what you're going to do and then by
the end of the night you can
check in with yourself and see how you
did and also reflect on what you wish
you had done done better so I track all
my wins and all those things and this is
really important because one of the
things that Michael talked about in this
book and he discovered by asking all
these influencers and highly successful
people what they do to plan their next
year the number one thing they do is
they reflect on the past year so for
example Tony Robbins says he collects
accomplishments and magic moments
throughout the year at the end of the
year he goes and reviews them all which
is I think a very smart thing to do and
when you journal the cool thing is is
you have a device that allows you to go
back and reflect on those wins just by
journaling and there's a lot of
different journals out there now there's
the freedom journal by John Lee Dumas
and and a bunch of other ones they're
all amazing the fact is I want you to
journal so you can actually at the end
of the year go back and reflect it's
nice to on the daily go and reflect on
what you've done but on the whole year I
mean we forget all the amazing things
that we've accomplished so that's the
first thing I would recommend that you
do if you aren't doing it already which
is journal so that's something I'm gonna
continue to do every day and I would
just back up everything that has been
said already you gotta you got to
appreciate the wins that you've had
along the way and that's a great way to
set yourself up for success because I
think it was a Jeff Walker here in this
book also says it puts you in the
positive state of mind to look forward
and plan the next year and that's with
anything and anytime you're going into
something new you want to have a
positive state of mind with whatever it
is so I highly agree with Jeff there so
reflect on your wins and maybe even
pause this video right now so you can
reflect on some of the big wins that
you've had for me a big win was
launching will it fly with fly was
launched in February and became a Wall
Street Journal bestseller it's now going
international it's being translated into
different languages and it's still doing
very well the audio book was so much fun
to record and that was a massive massive
success mainly because I've seen all the
change that it's made in people's lives
and the companion course that goes along
with it I mean tens of thousands of
people in there and I'm just super
thankful for that another big success
that I've had this past year was the
redesign of smart passive income now
it's not complete it's always being
tweaked and optimized but it was a
really nice thing to go highly
customized with all different pieces of
that are on the site that also included
a Content audit which if you remember
back in episode 200 of the smart passive
income podcast was that was featuring
Todd Tresidder from financial mentor com
who came on and talked about how he had
deleted a third of his content and
actually increases traffic threefold so
you can go check it out
smartpassiveincome.com slash session 200
and that's something we implemented it
and saw a lot of success with as well
and then another more personal success
that I've had my wife and I both had is
that our daughter who is four she
started preschool and she's loving it
and that was a huge accomplishment for
us because just the kids were growing up
and they're learning and they're they're
being smarter but also we've had a
little bit more time to ourselves at
home which was huge and so we've been
able to get more done and do things
around the house that we wouldn't been
it wouldn't have been able to do
beforehand so with both kids in school
now it's awesome and that was a huge
accomplishment for the year so I'm quite
proud of that and that's putting me in a
positive state of mind for next year so
really quick reflect on what you have
done this past year that you're super
proud of think of that now and then
let's move on to the next one okay so
another important strategy here in this
book that a number of influencers have
talked about is and this is point number
four here I'm not going to share the
whole book with you you can download it
through the link that's here below or
you can go to smartpassiveincome.com
slash start - right
to download the book now again it's very
good number four which is eliminate the
excess meaning you've got to get rid of
the stuff that's not working for you and
I did a lot of this this year Jeff Goins
echoed this point he says by killing the
underperforming tasks and projects it
opens up all kinds of room to be more
creative and innovative without running
out of margin and I know Jeff is working
on his fifth book I think fifth
published book he just finished I saw
recently on Facebook he just finished
his a final final final final final
draft which if you've written a book you
know what that's like Derrick also has a
very nice picture and here Lee blow this
up for you but he goes I try to quit
things I love that aren't delivering the
results I want that's a huge piece of
advice and when you do that you take a
sort of you know essentialism approach
to life in your business which is you do
the things that matter
and it's hard because sometimes you
don't even know what matters but a lot
of things can help you along the way
my mastermind group has been really
helpful for sharing with me the things
that I should and shouldn't be doing
looking at your analytics - that could
be a great place to start in terms of
well what's working and what's not so
you can do more of what is and less of
what's not or none of what's not so I
would highly recommend you you you do
that and again just try to try say no to
things you know maybe for 2017 what you
can do is make a no list what are the
things that you're gonna say no - I know
a few people who last year said notice
speaking that's not something I'm doing
this coming year because I enjoy it and
there's a lot of presentations that
happen here in San Diego so I'm able to
kind of do it in my hometown which is
nice let's see what am I gonna say no to
- 2017 for me personally it's gonna be
an interesting one because there's a lot
of big projects that are happening I am
coming out or actually working on book
number two I don't know if it'll come
out by the end of the year it's actually
gonna be put out traditionally hopefully
or at least I'm gonna start that process
to see what it's like see if the numbers
make sense and just experiment to see
what that's like so that's definitely
something I'm saying yes - I'm also
saying yes to courses which are coming
out I've already launched one of my
courses - a founding group of students
who are in there now taking it enjoying
it leaving positive feedback so it can
be relaunched in February and then I'm
also working on a physical product which
I'm working on which is a lot of fun
exciting that's going to be sort of the
2017 experiment that I'm going to be
giving you the older over-the-shoulder
look on and just kind of revealing that
entire process to you but I feel like
there's a lot of things I'm going to say
no - as well one of those things is
going to be I have to say no to more
podcast interviews even though I I want
to do them and I love them I love being
featured on other shows you know when
you think about it it's hours and hours
every single week that I'm dedicating
for other people's content and with
these big projects that I have going on
that's one thing I need to say no -
doesn't mean I'm gonna say no to
everybody but I have to be very
selective with where I spend my time
next year and that's one of the things
that a bet that's been taking up a lot
of time I've found in 2016 so that's
going to be one of the excess thing
another thing that I got rid of this
past year was actually a lot of the work
that I did in and around the podcast so
it's now at a point now where it's very
automated so that's actually one thing
that you might be able to consider you
know cutting the excess from and that's
you know if you do any publications or
podcasting of any kind you can hand off
a lot of that work to somebody else that
you can spend more time doing the things
that you should be spending time on okay
and the final thing I want to talk about
is point number seven that's made here
that a number of influencers have talked
about and that is scheduling the year
it's very difficult to do that I found I
even have a calendar that I have on the
wall here that it was hardly ever used
because it was just not you know the
right size and there were certain
elements I didn't like about it but
anyway there's Marie Forleo says I block
out calendar time for my most important
outcomes vacations fun and time off and
major businesses and creative projects
those stakes in the ground ensure that
what's most important happens now you
probably have a lot that's happening in
2017 and one of the first exercises and
things that you can do to make you make
you succeed next year is actually right
now put a stake in the ground on those
specific dates on when you want things
to happen you may want to launch a
course you may want to release a book
but unless you put that stake in the
ground or actually mark that date on the
calendar it's likely not going to happen
because what's gonna happen is you're
gonna keep pushing it back and I found
that to be the case when I launched will
it fly too it wasn't until we said okay
February is when we're launching that
all the things beforehand finally kind
of fell into place that that's what I
had majorly worked on in 2015 was
debriding that book so it could come out
in 2017 um so with all the projects that
I have that I mentioned earlier those
there are specific dates for those which
is great Amy Porterfield
here says seeing the big picture in
advance allows me to work with more
purpose throughout the year that last
part is really important because you're
gonna find that as you go into the year
and time starts to pass there's gonna be
things that come up and try to get in
the way you're gonna want to do other
things you're gonna have entrepreneur
britelite syndrome or squirrel squirrel
squirrel right like we want to do all
these different projects but when you
have these things on your calendar
already
then you'll be able to actually as
you're going through the year make room
for those things that should be really
important and that's why setting up a
calendar is really important in getting
that bird's eye perspective on what's
happening is gonna be absolutely key
so if I've done that already for myself
and I think you should do that for
yourself as well that's something that I
could have done a little bit better in
2016 that's for sure I only had one
major thing on the calendar and that was
the book launch so then after February
well it was kind of well let's see what
I'm interested in and do that and
because of that no major projects were
released only only the course which
finally came out in October and I'd
mention of course a couple times for
those of you who are like where can I
get access to that you can check out the
sales page and get on the wait list for
it it'll be relaunched in February of
this coming year I'm sensing a pattern
here for SPI launches you can check that
out at smart from scratch com of course
that's specifically for people who are
literally starting from scratch who
don't know what to do want to get their
hand held through the process of
validating a business idea who want to
get their first customer that's that's
what the the course allows you to do so
if you've read will it fly you want a
little bit more smart from scratch comm
is where you go and check that out so
that's on the calendar for next year as
well and hopefully you can start to put
stuff on your calendar - alright so uh
that's it for this episode of SPI TV I
hope you enjoyed it and thank you again
to Michael Hyatt for his guide and and
if you want to check that out you can
again go to smart passive income comm
slash start - right so you can start
right come 2017 thank you so much I look
forward to working with you next year
and to sharing all these cool projects
with you and in the comments section
below if you wanted to leave one or two
of your big items for next year that you
want to accomplish put them down
maybe it'll hold you accountable as well
and also it would be kind of fun to see
what all the rest of the community is up
to look forward to seeing it thank you
again so much please subscribe to SPI TV
if you have yet to do so and again thank
you so much and here's to you and a safe
happy healthy end of the year Cheers
